I have been thinking about this lately and I think there's a good chance a millennial will make to the White House before a Gen Xer.
Will there ever be a Gen X president?

Obama was gen x, right?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | November 21, 2022 4:16 AM |
Obama is a Boomer.

Obama was a Boomer. Born 1961.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | November 21, 2022 4:17 AM |
I don't think there ever will be.
People born in the 1930's were completely passed over for the Presidency.
Same for the 1950's.
I think that people born in the 1970's will also be passed over.
Obama was born in 1961, and I think the next President will have been born in the 1980's, as they are in their 40's.
Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Donald Trump were all born in the 1940's.
I think that there will be a big group of future Presidents who were born in the 1980's.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | November 21, 2022 4:17 AM |
Yeah Obama can be classified as one under Strauss and Howe, who draw the line much more accurately, at 1961, rather than the government and the research institutes, who have it (absurdly imo) at 1965.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | November 21, 2022 4:19 AM |
I'm an Xer born in '76 and I have hardly anything in common with someone born in '61.

Harris, DeSantis, Newsom, Whitmer, Warnock, Haley, Sununu = all Gen X Which Millennials could be next? Mayor Pete is not going to happen. AOC? Sadly also no. So unless Biden or Trump wins again and then someone currently unknown emerges....
by Anonymous | reply 7 | November 21, 2022 4:36 AM |
Biden is the only President from the Silent Generation so you never know, maybe an Xer will win in 2052.

Out of that group you mentioned I truly hope DeSantis never becomes president. He would be worse than Trump imo.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | November 21, 2022 4:45 AM |
First of all, r6, that doesn’t really matter. Do you think someone born in 1982 (40) has that much in common with someone born in 1995 (27)? Both are Millennials. There are cadres within generations.
But second of all you have more in common with the 61 person than you think. You both watched music videos on mtv, you both grew up with PCs or had them in early adulthood, you weee both likely latchkey kids, etc.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | November 21, 2022 4:45 AM |
R6 - 1961 is a Boomer.
Gen X is 1965 - 1980.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | November 21, 2022 4:48 AM |
I had so much hope for Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) born in 1973.
Same for Beto O'Rourke born in 1972.
Neither of them were able to pull off a win, though.
Nikki Haley was born in 1972, but her star is fading.
Paul Ryan was probably the best shot at a Gen X-er becoming President, but he fell off the map. Completely.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | November 21, 2022 4:53 AM |
GenX has one more good shot at the Presidency.
That would be Gavin Newsom, born in 1967.
If he can't win, then people born in the 1960's and 1970's will have lost their chance.
If Biden wins another term, he will serve until 2029.
By then, people born in 1980 and later will be next in line.

r10 I can honestly tell you that I have little in common with a person born in '61 as I was born in '76 but thanks for trying to tell me my own fucking life story. JFC.

by Anonymous | reply 16 | November 21, 2022 12:56 PM |
Harris might be as close as we get. but still, considering that we now have an eighty year old president if Newsom, as an example turns eighty and is elected president that could be as far off as 2047
by Anonymous | reply 17 | November 21, 2022 1:24 PM |
Generationally, I don't think there are enough Gen-X'ers to elect one of their own.
The reason there were so many Boomer presidents, is because there were/are so many fucking Boomers.
The number of Gen X-er's was far less than the previous generation.
Then the number of Millennials shot up, after Gen X, which is why a Millennial will probably be the next President.
Generations trust their own.
From Bill Clinton in 1992 through Trump in 2020, Boomers voted for their own. That's a 28 year span.
And yes, Obama is included as a Boomer.

"geenration jones" is the formalized name of his and michelle's micro-generation. everyone had a TV and no one was going to be drafted - in contrast to earlier boomers
by Anonymous | reply 19 | November 21, 2022 1:46 PM |
R11 just keeps reiterating one set of ideas as the only set of ideas.
Not much can be done with people like that. People born in the 60s are absolutely not boomers.

[quote] but thanks for trying to tell me my own fucking life story. JFC.
And thank you for telling us that your personal feelings about people born in a year = the absolute truth about generational divides.
Strauss and Howe wrote the book on generational divides (literally), and they start Gen x at 1961.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | November 21, 2022 4:30 PM |
Clinton was a Boomer that could appeal to Gen X while his big deal is winning over enough of his fellow Boomers. Obama was a Boomer that presented as and was close enough to be considered a Gen X, that could also appeal to Millennials. Neither were NOT boomers, but when we have the quibbles, that's where 'Generation Jones' comes in. Obama won though enough Boomers not being against him (Recession and War consequences for Republicans), and otherwise Gen X and older Millennials popping up (Democrats 'falling in love'). Then 2012 Boomers softened support and Gen X/Millennials were not as enthused and active, but it was still enough to squeeze through.
If it makes you feel better, call Obama a Gen Xer, but there's really a rather big difference between him and today's 40somethings. Remember he was a man who kept his hair black and a youthful appearance and cadence, but he wasn't really what he made himself appear as in 2008. People today do not generally consider anyone 60+ to be a Gen Xer, and Obama is 61. If he's Gen X, its in the sort of 'cusp' way, instead of clearly.
If a Gen X wins the presidency in 2024 or 2028, it will be through getting Boomers to back off (Silent won't even matter much anymore), and for the first time, a swell of Millennial support and active voting, with Gen Z participation. Otherwise it will be Boomers then skipping to Millennials. The better hope is that a left-enough Democratic president is the next Obama for elections, something a part of the party has been trying to recreate for a while now. The worst fear is that world events and cultural trends swing a long of younger voters to the right or further right so a fresh faced Gen X Republican fascist (unlikely to be moderate or even conservative) is the Successful Trump. The latter seems less likely to me though, since while generations most often become more conservative with age, its really that they move rightward to some degree, not actually necessarily become conservatives. And I do not see Millennials enjoying today's crop of fresher right wing faces. A section of straight white men or close combos do, but everyone else is already sick and tired of them.
So we'll have a 40-60 something Gen Xer that makes trusted-enough appeals to Millennials who by that point have become regular enough voters to trust they can get out their vote. Or there may be nothing.

[quote]And thank you for telling us that your personal feelings about people born in a year = the absolute truth about generational divides.
I'm speaking from experience. People born in the early 60s had a totally different experience than people born in the mid/late 70s.

[quote]But second of all you have more in common with the 61 person than you think. You both watched music videos on mtv, you both grew up with PCs or had them in early adulthood, you weee both likely latchkey kids, etc.
A person who was born in 1961 was already a grown-ass adult when I was starting kindergarten. Two totally different generations. Everybody and their mother watched MTV in the 80s and had a PC, that's totally superficial.

by Anonymous | reply 28 | November 22, 2022 12:48 AM |
But culturally and socially a person born in the early 60s had a totally different experience than a person born in the late 70s r28. And being European, you should really stay out of this. Generational lines are much stricter in the US.

It’s really something that, although the peak of the baby boom, the 1950s - like the 1930s - could be shut-out having birthed a president. Before the 1930s, the only decade not so represented since the days of George Washington (born in the 1730s) had been the 1810s.

People who were born in 1961 did not grow up with PCs. It wasn't until the mid-80s that PCs became somewhat common, and even then most people didn't have one in their homes.

Gavin Newsom doesn't have a chance in hell of being elected president. He is the embodiment of an effete "coastal elite" that Middle America despises.
And it's too bad, because personally I think he would be a good president. Unfortunately we just have too many idiot rednecks in this country.

R6, I was born in 1980. Like you, I so don't feel like Gen X. Or Millennial. I prefer to be called what we were called as kids: Gen Y. (Remember that?)
I think 1976-1983 is a micro generation. We are a little analog, a little digital.

DeSantis, Cruz, Rubio, Hawley, Cotton, Nikki, Noem, Kari Lake, Large Marge, the North Dakota guy - all Xers, all disappointments, all atypical - and Newsom or Beshar are probably our D best shots BUT don't rule out the Hail Mary move of 44 as VP, because I've seen that touted in two separate unrelated pieces this week, which would deny The Xers a POTUS more than likely.
