I used to love autumn and winter but now I'm sensitive to the cold. And I get nothing out of fall foliage anymore.
Intolerance to cold as you age

HELL NO!! I love the cold! I went out today in 28 degree weather without a coat just to experience a normal temperature.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | November 21, 2022 12:57 AM |
I used to hike mountains in the winter but my old bones can't do that anymore.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | November 21, 2022 1:01 AM |
OP needs some of Granny’s rheumatiz medicine.

I was like you, R1, always energized by the cold, but things began to change for me perhaps three years ago. Now I often sit shivering, with a bedsheet draped over my shoulders.

I can bundle up in the winter, but in the summer I can only take so much off without everyone trying to squeeze my succulent man titties.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | November 21, 2022 1:11 AM |
I’ve read that eating less protein on a hot day cools you down, so I wonder if eating more protein in winter would help cold people keep warm.

I'm actually fine with NYC winters, except when we get that brutal near zero weather with blustery winds, then I feel like in Chicago.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | November 21, 2022 1:49 AM |
But how old are you, R1?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | November 21, 2022 2:01 AM |
Alcohol warms you up! But it’s bad when you stumble outside in your underwear and freeze to death in the gutter.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | November 21, 2022 2:01 AM |
EG (57) here. I always looked forward to cold weather but as I've gotten closer to my current age I do find I have a lower tolerance to cold than I used to. It could also be because I used to drink heavily and so probably didn't notice the cold as much.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | November 21, 2022 2:20 AM |
EG (70) here and I love autumn and winter. Summer tires me out.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | November 21, 2022 2:22 AM |
I never turned my heater on until it hit the 30s outside. Now if it falls below 65 I crank it on high. I used to loathe hot weather, and now I revel in it. God I hate getting old.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | November 21, 2022 2:22 AM |
The entire continental US has been colder than average for the past week. And the people living in the Buffalo NY area really got screwed with more than four feet of snow all at once.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | November 21, 2022 2:32 AM |
Can still have my windows open in the evening or get away with just two layers in the dead of winter, but nowadays I tend to wear gloves (sleeve/gauntlet style that cover the wrist and forearm too) and/or a hat inside the house, and often have to put on a big thick jumper or a thermal undershirt as well. Whereas in my teens and early-mid twenties I’d only wear thin t-shirts in a snowy December. If I’m this nesh in my thirties, I shall probably perish of the cold before I see sixty.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | November 21, 2022 2:58 AM |
I have the opposite: anything above 65* outside and I'm sweating. I used to plastic all the windows in winter to cut now on drafts, but now I go around in a tshirt and set it at 64*
Someone suggested I have Lupus.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | November 21, 2022 3:00 AM |
R15 lupus raises body temp? I didn't know that
by Anonymous | reply 16 | November 21, 2022 3:01 AM |
Eat. Your body needs food in cold weather to maintain body temperature. Well, I mean I'm pretty sure about that. I feel cold all day until I eat - food is energy, right?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | November 21, 2022 3:17 AM |
R9
I assume that was a joke, but alcohol does not warm you up for reasons that can be Googled.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | November 21, 2022 11:09 AM |
I’m in my 50s and I love the cold weather, it gives me life. Of course I can’t be outside in just a t-shirt like I did in my teens.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | November 21, 2022 12:13 PM |
I'm in Pennsylvania, where it's cold. I keep better.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | November 21, 2022 12:24 PM |
I’m never cold. I wish I could be cold. I feel whatever temp is outside + 20 degrees.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | November 21, 2022 12:42 PM |
I like the autumn and cooler/colder temps, but as I get older....I notice my joints ache a bit more...arthitis, expecially in my index finger.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | November 21, 2022 3:03 PM |
*arthritis^
by Anonymous | reply 23 | November 21, 2022 3:04 PM |
Keep your core warm by wearing a long sleeved t shirt or turtleneck under your layers. Eat warm food, but whatever you do, don’t cradle your mug!
by Anonymous | reply 24 | November 21, 2022 3:07 PM |
I'm 62, and I can handle the cold much better than the heat. Thank goodness for air conditioning, or I doubt I would make it through the summer.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | November 21, 2022 3:10 PM |
I've never liked extreme temperatures but I prefer cold to heat. Getting older definitely changes our perceptions and how we process sensory information.
If you're not "getting anything" from fall foliage, that's not related to cold sensitivity. Sounds like depression setting in.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | November 21, 2022 3:13 PM |
I'm increasingly entertaining fantasies of becoming a snowbird. My winter vacations are getting longer every year. I used to be OK with winter till the end of February. Now I'm jonesing for the sun and heat by January 15th.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | November 21, 2022 3:30 PM |
Cradling your mug is a must in cold weather...
by Anonymous | reply 28 | November 21, 2022 6:02 PM |
Soups! ^^
by Anonymous | reply 29 | November 21, 2022 6:03 PM |
There’s a romance to warm sweaters, scarves and socks… sitting under a blanket or by a fire. I love it.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | November 21, 2022 6:05 PM |
As my mom aged she got to the point where she was never warm enough. In her apartment, she’d have the normal heat on, plus space heaters, and she’d be wearing multiple layers of clothing. It was hard for me to tolerate. But that was nothing compared to being in the car with her. Hot air on full blast. I would feel like I was suffocating.
I’m older now (65) but seem to tolerate weather extremes pretty well. If I’m dressed for it, I don’t mind being outside on a cold winter day. This morning it was in the low thirties but it wasn’t unpleasant. Didn’t even feel the need to zip up my coat.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | November 21, 2022 7:44 PM |
^^women tend to feel the cold more, it seems. Dunno whether that's to do with hormones, muscle mass/power, or body fat distribution or something.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | November 21, 2022 7:47 PM |
Prefer heat to cold. Have always been this way.
Freezing cold is no way to live for weeks on end in dreary Northern latitudes. Ugh!
by Anonymous | reply 33 | November 22, 2022 9:38 AM |
I am the exact opposite.
When I was young I was very sensitive to cold.
I’m almost 60 and now I am very sensitive to heat.
In the winter time I let my bedroom get as cold as 48°F
