Contrarian thoughts about famous voices

There's no accounting for taste, and different people react differently to different kinds of music and different sounds.

With that, I'm curious what others think about various artists who are celebrated for their voices. Here are some thoughts of mine...

Stevie Nicks: So many people LOVE her voice and I do find it distinctive and full of curious textures, but overall she sounds like a singing bumblebee to me. I like Courtney Love's voice better. But that's not to say I don't like Stevie's music. I love a lot of it. I just don't get the connection with her voice so many have.

Christina Aguilera: Her voice is powerful but she's got no honking self-control *at all* when left to her own devices and I find her borderline unlistenable.

Amy Winehouse: I like her voice but it seems overrated to me. People seem to LOOOOOOVE her voice and it just doesn't sound *that* special to me.

Barbra Streisand: Technically pretty like a flute or something but I don't want to listen to a cold emotionless flute very often. I don't connect with her voice at all at all at all.

Rob Thomas: Male voices usually do nothing for me but I love something about his. I feel like he should be more celebrated for his vocal performances.

Fiona Apple: I LOVE her voice and I really wish she would sing more and go back to making more melodious music because her *interesting* music is inteteresting but I feel like she squanders her amazing instrument in favor of drums and clanging pots and pans and hiccups these days.

Björk: I *appreciate* her voice and how she uses it but I find her difficult to listen to because I think her voice is overall quite unpleasant sounding.

Madonna: Her voice can be thin/weak and her pitch isn't great, but part of her range sounds so warm and delicious to me, and I think it's really beautiful and has been overlooked. And even when her voice isn't really delivering, I find her voice more pleasant to listen to than many other popular artists.

Those are just a few who come to mind.

I'm the Tori troll who loves both Tori Amos and Kate Bush and so I won't even get into them.

Madonna's voice hasn't been listenable since Confessions.

Kim Carnes and Rod Stewart sound alike.

I remember reading someone's opinion that Lisa Stansfield sings under the note. I never thought about it again until hearing this song, the belted parts especially.

Stevie had a tight vibrato and a smokey voice. I don't think her range was great, but she had power and an instantly recognizable voice.

Jennifer Hudson is screechy and shouty.

I agree about Fiona Apple. She was born in the wrong time. She was meant to be a smoky jazz vocalist.

Adele is really a very limited vocalist. She is very expressive but she has a tiny range and not much variation.

Ariana Grande sounds like a teenager when she sings. Sure, she hits high notes but that's it. There's no depth to her voice. She sounds the sing on just about every song.

Whitney had an amazing voice but it's laughable that some of her fans think she would have been able to sing rock songs.

OP, I prefer Tori's cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit to the original. I like that I can actually understand the words coming out of her mouth.

I find Mark Knopfler hard to understand when he sings. He's a master class in why phrasing matters. He has none.

by Anonymousreply 11December 30, 2022 8:23 PM

That's not phrasing, R11, that's diction or enunciation.

I don't agree about Ariana Grande having no depth, but what she does lack is the ability to pronounce consonants. Of any kind. She makes Kurt Cobain sound like a diction protégé.

Thanks, r12. I wasn't sure what the right word was. I knew someone would correct me if I got it wrong. We learn so much here.

No problem! You're spot on about Mark Knopfler.

Whitney LOVED rock.

Whitney kills it on that Higher Love cover she did.

R14 I listened to Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms this morning. When CDs first came out, it was often mentioned as one of the better-sounding silver discs, so I bought a copy. I hardly listened to it. It never moved me.

Then someone here started a thread about the "faggot" song, and I put the album on a couple of times.

For the life of me, I can't figure why anyone thought this is a good-sounding recording. I can't understand a thing he says. He mutters, and his voice is rather far back in the mix. Back on the shelf for this one for another thirty years. And back to Mahler (No. 2, Bruno Walter).
