Miss America 2023–it’s a Motley Crew

Last sad days for Miss America. The pageant photographer should be sent back to Sears’ Portrait Studio.

Looks more like Miss China 🇨🇳

by Anonymousreply 1November 20, 2022 2:33 PM

Oh.

Well, at least they don't call it a beauty pageant anymore. Are they trading "swimsuit" for "college loan debt" competition?

by Anonymousreply 2November 20, 2022 2:47 PM

It needs to stop now.

by Anonymousreply 3November 20, 2022 3:03 PM

At last! Or is some tranny gonna buy the organization and make it an even greater mockery of itself?

by Anonymousreply 6November 24, 2022 10:06 AM

If this is the “Miss” category, I’m scared of what the Fraus look like.

Miss KY looks like Rachel Dratch and Miss ME…bitch! I thought R5 was joking but she actually said that.

Miss ND didn’t have access to a portable steamer or properly sized bra; her “dress” looks tacked on.

by Anonymousreply 7November 24, 2022 10:25 AM

Woof!

The only one who's even close to attractive is (gulp) Miss Wyoming.

by Anonymousreply 8November 24, 2022 10:27 AM

Yikes

by Anonymousreply 9November 24, 2022 10:41 AM

Miss Maryland isn't bad.

by Anonymousreply 10November 24, 2022 10:48 AM

R1 is right.

There's a whole lot of ugly here.

Just wait until Miss Greater Derry gets in next year.

Then it'll be a TOTAL joke.

If anything, either Arizona, Michigan, or Nebraska should win on looks alone.

by Anonymousreply 11November 24, 2022 11:06 AM

Never been the same since they kicked off Bert Parks. "There he goes, . . ."

by Anonymousreply 12November 24, 2022 11:32 AM

Ms. Connecticut has bodies buried in her backyard. And not in the fun way.

by Anonymousreply 13November 24, 2022 11:36 AM

I thought Hawaii looked decent.

Found an interview on youtube, and apparently she was Miss Teen USA Hawaii in 2017.

Her older sister also went to the Miss America pageant that same year.

She seems to have a lot of pageant experience, and that usually works in a contestant's favor.

Miss Executive Secretary (Montana), Miss Aging Prematurely (Kentucky), Miss I Graduated With Honors While High on Crack/ Miss I Was A Dog in High School (Maine)…

by Anonymousreply 18November 24, 2022 12:10 PM

I love Savanna Cabanna. Hope she wins.

by Anonymousreply 19November 24, 2022 12:11 PM

Miss New York is a big boned gal. Or, a tranny.

by Anonymousreply 20November 24, 2022 12:25 PM

Miss Texas does NOT have big hair. How is that possible?

by Anonymousreply 21November 24, 2022 12:30 PM

I have a good friend who was Miss Teen Kentucky years ago. Part of her prize was a lifetime supply of Aquanet. Her closet was full of bottles and she finally had to tell they to stop sending it.

by Anonymousreply 22November 24, 2022 12:32 PM

Has the pageant been over ran by "Non-Binary" / "Stunning And Brave" activists yet?

by Anonymousreply 23November 24, 2022 12:37 PM

What’s with the blazers? Some of them look like they just left the lab.

by Anonymousreply 24November 24, 2022 12:39 PM

Well, Suzanne Sugarbaker's been proven wrong - Miss Mississippi is kind of homely (albeit far from the worst of the bunch.

by Anonymousreply 25November 24, 2022 12:41 PM

We're a bunch of cheap sluts in Missouri, our gurlie is a fine representative.

by Anonymousreply 26November 24, 2022 12:48 PM

Miss North Dakota wearing what appears to be an outfit she made in sewing class, needs a haircut and a bra.

by Anonymousreply 27November 24, 2022 12:54 PM

by Anonymousreply 28November 24, 2022 1:24 PM

Miss Maine for the win! That gal can party!

by Anonymousreply 29November 24, 2022 1:28 PM

Maine looks like Rachel Dratch in a party city wig.

by Anonymousreply 30November 24, 2022 1:54 PM

Geez, those women are not attractive.

Remember when the contestants from the southern states like Alabama, Texas, Missouri, Georgia were gorgeous. You'd think that the least those maga redneck states could do is produce attractive women for Miss America since they contribute nothing else to the country.

by Anonymousreply 31November 24, 2022 1:58 PM

Most of them look like entry-level headshots that a talent agency receives and discards by the truckload.

by Anonymousreply 32November 24, 2022 2:03 PM

That talent act is what won her the crown. God told her she would win and she did.

by Anonymousreply 49November 24, 2022 4:01 PM

Yes, R46, it’s shameful they no longer crown physically attractive contestants.

If the deaf and gimpy-legged can figure out how to properly present themselves, I’m trying to understand how some of these women are even here.

Who told Miss CA to pose like that? Of all the features to draw our attention to, THAT is not the one.

Miss ID has skunk bangs…maybe she’s been coasting on having nice tits because I don’t see it. Just read she wants to teach on overseas military bases and it’s starting to make sense.

Less than 10 photogenic women in a grouping of 51 and these women represent the best from their states. This is sad.

by Anonymousreply 50November 24, 2022 4:03 PM

Take a look at the areas of studies for these women.

Communications and Marketing.

No education majors, veterinarians, dentists or doctors.

Communications and Marketing.

And the next time you watch a TV news broadcast with a breathless newscaster reading the news or presentation without any understanding, you'll recall those people who are reading the news.

Are reading the news.

by Anonymousreply 51November 24, 2022 4:12 PM

I spoke too soon, Miss Idaho is an Education major?

by Anonymousreply 52November 24, 2022 4:13 PM

Im guessing these contestants did their own hair and makeup for this photoshoot.

Professional makeup artist adjust for different lighting scenarios. Black and white photography requires a different type of makeup to photograph well.

I think I see tracks in the hairlines of some of these contestants, this is a flaw that should be edited out.

by Anonymousreply 53November 24, 2022 4:17 PM

FWIW R46, Miss South Carolina is a rape survivor.

by Anonymousreply 54November 24, 2022 4:19 PM

I didn't notice Miss Idahos skunk bangs, her jawline was the only thing I noticed.

She has a long, square jaw with a pointed tip.

Genetics are a bitch.

A good photo editor can adjust for genetic .........disappointment.

And, know your angles when you get your photograph taken.

The pageant has been in trouble for some time and might not survive another few years. They have no tv/streaming contract and they have gone from having it in convention hall in Atlantic City to a smaller event center at the Mohegan sun next month.

Ohio’s mother and 2 aunts competed at Miss America. They are all classical pianists.

A few years ago a former Miss America was going to auction off her crown for charity, and it didn’t get one bid.

by Anonymousreply 79November 25, 2022 3:03 PM

South Carolina looks tranny as hell.

Miss America is the WORST.

by Anonymousreply 80November 25, 2022 3:30 PM

I agree, OP. The photographer really fouled this one up. These look like photos of realtors and bank loan brokers in a Midwestern city.

by Anonymousreply 81November 25, 2022 4:20 PM

OP here—I thought you guys might rag on the photo quality a bit more…my high school homecoming Queen got better photo treatment in our senior yearbook!

That said, based on these pages, I would say the likely winner is from OHIO, Hawaii or New York…at least under the “old system.” Ultimately, who cares—except to note that Miss America was the OG reality show. It ruled American tv ratings for two decades.

by Anonymousreply 82November 25, 2022 5:30 PM

When I first started looking at these beauties I knew exactly what miss MA was going to look like. Ugh

by Anonymousreply 83November 25, 2022 6:10 PM

R83, if I recall correctly, even back in the good old days, the New England Misses were rarely very pretty.

It's funny to remember how excited little gay me would get at the age of 8 or 9 to watch the Miss America pageant at my grandparents' house. Grandma was ruthlessly critical and a talented mimic - she'd fit right in at the DL! - and would mock the contestants whom she deemed unworthy of such an exalted event. The pageant was right up there with the Oscars as far as I was concerned as a annual ritual that generated nervous excitement for days ahead of time.

by Anonymousreply 84November 25, 2022 8:18 PM

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 87November 25, 2022 8:41 PM

R87, thank you for that. September 7, 1968. There's no doubt I was watching. I almost teared up when Bert started singing "There She Is". We mock it now, but winning Miss America was a big deal for these women. The tearful thrill (theirs, not mine) was real. All that and Bess Myerson, too!

The winner, Judith Ford, Miss Illinois, was very pretty in a typical Miss America wholesome way. She's still alive at 72 and seems to have aged well as of 2015.

It being 1968, there were feminists protesting outside the Convention Center. Apparently, they threw bras and other feminine products (I don't know if that included FDS) into a trash can. A newspaper headline conflated that act with draft-card burning, and the famous "Women's Lib" bra-burning legend was born. (Well, it was famous at the time.)

Jane Jayroe, Miss America 1966–67, conducted the pageant orchestra, and she knew it was a lame, stupid talent. She never expected to place, much less win, and she had never done pageants before her sorority sisters talked her into entering her school's preliminary. She even considered quitting during her reign because she thought she wasn't doing a good job. She went on to become a well-known local news anchor in Oklahoma City and Dallas.

r89, Miss Oklahoma looks to be about 42. Who the fuck took these photos? The lighting is wrong (you can see every shadow, pore, and glug of makeup on the girl's faces).

by Anonymousreply 93November 26, 2022 8:06 AM

The photos themselves suck. They all look washed out, it doesn't even look like a professional took them. A lot of them look like they're wearing Century 21 Realtor jackets, too. The blondes look the worst. Dry hair, dry skin, overly expressive expressions, ( some not enough though). A 16 yr old kid could have taken better photos. Just pretty damned bad for Miss America.

Miss USA pageant or Miss FAS pageant ?!? Damn that is a kennel chock full of mutts ! A couple are marginally pretty, but not one is truly beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 110November 27, 2022 12:40 AM

The photos were unannounced prior to a meeting with all the contestants. The photos were taken when the meeting was over. They had no time to change outfits or adjust makeup and hair. I guess the organization feels you should be prepared for anything during your reign.

Over two-thirds of the final score is based on talent and private interviews. They are looking for ambitious women, not those who look good in a swimsuit or hide behind makeup and hair.

I think the organization moved to change too quickly and suddenly. Supporters and sponsors were not prepared for the changes. Some former Miss Americas refuse to have anything to do with the new program, solely because they were not kept in the loop. Only about 25 former Miss Americas showed up for the 100th anniversary pageant.

It's snowballing fast. It was a pop-cultural entity that has run its course.

by Anonymousreply 111November 27, 2022 12:54 AM

R111, its course would still be alive, if controversial (and thus more interesting), if they had maintained emphasis on being a beauty pageant. Miss America always pretended the other stuff mattered - and it did at the margins - but first and foremost it was about being physically attractive. They should have stuck with that and damn what the feminists thought. By trying to appease "modern sensibilities" they killed the goose that laid the golden egg. If they were still proudly and openly about beautiful women who were also talented and poised, they could do quite well.

by Anonymousreply 112November 27, 2022 1:03 AM

The evening gown competition was must see tv in our house. Mother and I were glued to the set. "I cant believe how low cut her dress is Mother" ! "I know, are they allowing loose women now?" Good times !

by Anonymousreply 113November 27, 2022 1:08 AM

Was there some big reckoning with the Miss America pageant? When did it happen? Because these women are distinctly average looking if not homely. I remember the pageants when I was a kid and the women all had the same kind of look, even features, thick glossy hair, lots of white teeth and the same smile, like a rectangle shape. It used to fascinate me because I couldn’t get my lips to make that shape. They looked like they were created in the same factory. These girls look like they work in the factory.

If you're a Miss America nerd, PageantsHayDay on YouTube is a gold mine. It's interesting to see how the pageant subtly evolved over the years—for example, for 1969–1970 they dropped Bess Myerson as co-host to be more "hip" and "with it."

Many proponents of the return of swimsuits express one prevailing thought in mind.

"You won't be successful in your life unless you are thin and pretty."

The elephant in the room....

My college's library had the first Miss America tell-all book, sportswriter Frank Deford's [italic]There She Is: The Life and Times of Miss America.[/italic] It was published in 1971 but was a pretty dishy read for the time. Yolande Betbeze Fox, Miss America 1951, told the author that most of the other contestants were huge bitches to her and posted a sign in her backstage dressing area reading HAIRY SITS HERE (a reference to her thick Liz Taylor–ish eyebrows).

by Anonymousreply 134November 28, 2022 1:16 AM

I enjoyed The Miss America, Miss USA & Miss USA pageants as a baby gayling in the 80s and 90s. But admittedly in the hellish atmosphere we call today's world, it all seems so irrelevant and passe.

Do you think The Miss America Organization will give in to the "Stunning And Brave" misfits and let Trannys, DragRacers, Non-Binaries, Lizzo 400 Pounders, Handicaps, Dwarfs, Tattoo/Piercing Circus Freaks, etc) compete?

Or will they just say "Fuck It" and let the whole organization become defunct?

There is no Miss America for 1950. The winner of the pageant the season after 1949 was crowned Miss America 1951 so that most of her reign would be in the current year.

The pageant was held in September, 1950.

The Pageant is a history lesson in pop culture.

Look at how the contestants dressed for the parade of states. All jet-setting by flying in an airplane. Most of them are beautiful by today's standards.

It used to be everybody dressed in their best to travel by air. Here in 1968. The good old days I remember....

Heather Whitestone danced en pointe for her talent. Because she was deaf, she could not hear the music, but she counted steps and felt the vibrations of the notes.

Here is Shirley Cothrans Miss America 1975 playing the flute. This was one of my favorite Miss America pageants.

Miss America 2002 was held literally DAYS after 9/11, in New Jersey.

They were going back and forth about whether or not to cancel the pageant, but they went ahead with it.

For me, it helped get my mind off the 9/11 attacks, and it stirred up a bit of national pride, to be honest.

It was a nice little bright light, after such darkness.

She was also dumpy looking and has zero talent r188 which is why it was a shock when she won. A similar thing happened a few years later when tawny Godin won. Tawny is considered one of the biggest cunts to deal with as far as former Miss Americas go.

Sam Haskell the ceo who had to resign aftera series of emails that were released that disparaged a number of former winners among other things wrote that a lot of them were a pain in the ass and were bitter that they didn’t make it in show biz. One of his lackeys called them former Miss cunts.

They threw out Sam and brought in Gretchen Carlson who was worse and ran the program into the ground and caused a huge rift between former winners.

by Anonymousreply 191December 11, 2022 8:46 PM

The Pageant has gone downhill since Gretchen Carlson took over its administration. She was replaced with people who were even more clueless about making it relevant to the public.

Last year it was streamed on Peacock. This year you need to pay a website called PageantsLive to see the live streaming of the pageant for a $33 dollar a month membership. After the first month, you can cancel the membership.

The finals at this Thursday, December 15th at 8:00pm at the Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut. I doubt more than 100,000 people will watch it.

It's really sad what's happened here.
