The New York Ripper (1982)- what a bizarre, sleazy film
I am aware it’s a Giallo film, but still. It was so odd and creepy yet frustrating. Why are women almost always so stupid in all these movies??
It’s a film set in NYC but it’s an Italian production. I love when foreign films are set in the states. They’re always so bizarre.
The murderer had the creepiest face but what a body!!!

Haven't seen this, op. Stabby films are a fetish, one I can't understand or relate to.

This film was a controversy in the UK, and banned.
“After the film was rejected for a UK cinema certificate in 1984 chief censor James Ferman ordered the original print to be re-exported back to the rights holder in Italy. This was to avoid any possible prosecution of either the UK distributor or the BBFC itself.
After many years of being banned in Britain the rights were purchased by UK company Vipco who issued the film originally as an export-only VHS version under close censor & police supervision. When censorship laws were relaxed in the UK it was submitted to the BBFC for a certificate in 2002 and received 22 secs of cuts to the razor-blade murder, as well as a strict guideline that the film could only be released with minimal publicity. The film was then issued on VHS by Vipco but a DVD release was canceled after some UK DVD distributors refused to stock it. Consequently it was never available on UK DVD until 2007 when the movie was released by Shameless Films, and this version contained similar cuts but reduced to 19 secs via a different edit.“

Fulci was the King of Splatter, a poor man's Dario Argento. No restraint when showing people being sliced open, ripped apart or vomiting their guts, usually women. His movies are completely sleazy and hard to watch because his storytelling is so poor, so you're only in for the shock effects and they are disturbing.

R5 agreed but this one actually has an interesting story. But hard to watch. Very dark and gritty in a disturbing way.

All I remember is that horny lady in the diner putting her foot in a stranger's crotch whilst biting her lip.

I watched the trailer in disgust,op and I would never sit through this film.
Psycho is a stabby fetish movie but is a masterpiece of film making and storytelling beautifully filmed in black and white.
The fetish of seeing a beautiful blond stabbed to death seems incidental in Psycho because of the skill of the filmmaker, it isn't.
The murder scene could be the primary reason that film was made, its fap material. Intentionally.

The dubbing artists in these movies were so talented at making the most agonizing screams. I remember a movie now where a sound dubbing guy was trying to find a woman with the perfect scream. Was it DePalma's Blowout?

Is this the one where one of the victims gets stabbed in the cunt?
I remember Nightmare City where one of the victims gets her tits cut off.
No wonder the 80s was rife with serial killers.

I loved that they dubbed even when the dialogue was originally spoken in English.

r13 that was standard practice in Italy back then. Even if some actors were speaking English they may have had a heavy accent so I guess they found it easier to just dub everything wholesale. Jessica Harper recalled when filming Suspiria there would be sounds of crew constructing sets while she was trying to do her scene.

Anyone living in NYC today would be horrified by this film.

Well r15, the weak asses living in NYC today crying about crime 24/7 would never survive a day in the 80s NYC. That was true rampant crime. This shit now is nothing.

I love them too. There was a bunch of cheap German films set in the US in the 70s and early 80s. Very existentialist. What America stands for for these filmmakers is fascinating
Come to think of it, other countries must feel the same about Hollywood films set over there. Bizarro for them probably.

Italian films were almost always totally post-dubbed, even in Italian, as R13 pointed out. That’s part of the reason Fellini movies have such an otherworldly quality. In the multi-national cast pictures that were common there in the 60s each actor just spoke his own language. Asian cinema is also usually completely post-dubbed. Recording clean dialogue on set is a lot of work - you can get scenrs shot much faster if you’re only recording guide-track.

The schlock director Doris Wishman did the same thing for budget reasons and didn't have time/money for good dubbing, so she would film the LISTENER in a conversation or let the camera roam around the room like a restless eye, taking in random objects while someone spoke. It became her "style" in a sense.

This must be the only slasher film ever made in which the serial killer quacks like a duck.

Paris France is a lovely city.
Hollywood makes every city seem overly glamorized. Especially NYC.

I love 70s and 80s NYC set films. NYC was dark and gritty and violent but mysterious and exciting. It’s so boring now.

I can usually handle a lot of sleaze, but something about this movie made me sick to my stomach. There's hardly any plot and it's just an excuse to rip women's tops off and then stick them with sharp objects in tight close ups. I can't find much redeemable in this one besides the glimpse it gives into 70's/80's NYC and the makeup effects. Maniac is a similar NYC set slasher from around the same time, but it's much more effective and frightening.
I don't care for most of Lucio Fulci's movies. Some of his films have nice cinematography, but they almost always either depress me or put me to sleep. Dario Argento and Mario Bava are much better.

The plot is literally in the title of the movie… it’s a serial killer and the police are trying to find who it is…

This movie has a lot of fans, but it's honestly one of my least-favorite of Lucio Fulci's filmography. It is a weird, sleazy, sex-thriller with gore that I just never could get into. I think "The Beyond" is his magnum opus—better than "Zombi". I also like "The House by the Cemetery" quite a bit, mainly for the atmosphere. "Don't Torture a Duckling" is also quite good, and very dark.

Most Giallo films were sleazy.
This wasn’t an American film. It was an Italian made film set in NYC.
