Too gay? Good singer, shitty actor?
Why didn't John Lloyd Young's career ever take off

His last credit was in 2014. Jersey Boys. That's should tell you quite a lot about hs acting ability

Ummm, he won a Tony.
Saw him in concert several times. Fantastic singer and very charming.

Lea Michele took his balls clean off, he’s a shell of a man now…

Judging by the picture, he's got really bad posture.

Love his cleft chin. Sexy.

I seem to remember that he had an aggressive female "manager/publicist" that showed up immediately in chat boards ( I'm fuzzy on this aspect, but Datalounge may have even been one of them) she would often infight and try to SHUT. SHIT. DOWN. whenever something was posted that she didn't like (gay rumors, gossip).

Of course he can sing. But he seemed like a casino-level talent that happened to be at the right place/time and rode Jersey Boys to its heights.
Haven't seen any evidence of any dazzling star power or anything that would take him beyond how well the role of Frankie Valli fit him. I'm sure he's doing fine with shows, etc. and can carve out a living in that lane.

He looks like K.D. Lang in that pic R3.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | October 8, 2025 2:41 PM |
He didn't have "it."

No talent. Zilch. None.

[quote]Why didn't John Lloyd Young's career ever take off
Certainly not for lack of aggression on his part. He was, and continues to be, a real brown-noser when it comes to interviewers and any other people who were in a position to help his career or help promote it. But to answer your question, I would say his career didn't take off due to limited talent. Also, if the JERSEY BOYS film had been a hit (and had been any good), that might have propelled him to a bigger career. But it wasn't.

And, I may be remembering incorrectly, but wasn't he romantically involved with that manager/publicist, at least for a while?

Does Jonathan Groff need a standby in Just in Time? I could see JLY in that role.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | October 8, 2025 2:54 PM |
JLY is 50.

He'd make a great game show host and do dinner theatre on hiatus. I think Jersey Boys, as directed by Clint Eastwood, was a disaster. The other guy Eric did pretty well for a minute. He was a Sondheim disciple. Part of the group of Gay guys Theatre guys who were part of the social circle around Stephen. Helped coordinate the Broadway memorial to SS.

Original cast. I predicted he and Christian Hoff would have the Tonys before the show opened.

Well, the special technique he acquired to negotiate the high-flying music of jERSEY BOYS didn't last super-long -- both live (when he returned to the part a few seasons later) and even on the film soundtrack, it's obvious that the crazy-high stuff isn't working for him as once it did.
I saw his 54 Below show a few years ago, and it was VERY frau-oriented, both as pitched by him and as received by the frau-heavy crowd. He was still handsome but didn't have much special to offer as a song stylist or just in purely vocal terms. A wasted evening.

Does anyone know how Christian Hoff is doing? Last I heard he was battling cancer.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | October 8, 2025 3:44 PM |
R20, that looks like something from a Saturday Night Live parody
by Anonymous | reply 25 | October 8, 2025 3:48 PM |
Hoff interview from earlier this year I believe

He hasn't updated his site with news since 2020.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 8, 2025 5:15 PM |
Maybe he's been in a coma for the last 5 years

Dona R. Miller is the manager of Tony Award-winner John Lloyd Young, who is known for his role as Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys and for his singing and acting career. Miller also served as the executive producer for Young's debut album My Turn....

A string of cheesy musicals as credits and you ask that question.
(And, yes, ALL musicals are cheesy and not the stuff that launches any star except for more cheesy musicals)
