Then the city of San Francisco should be passing and enforcing laws to protect them from discrimination, and they should be fighting for their rights in court if they encounter discrimination (there's plenty of attorneys who will represent them pro bono). Trans people aren't helpless victims and they shouldn't be treated as though they are. Much of the criticism they get here at DL and elsewhere comes from the way they're so often demanding special favors and treatment (as opposed to rights).

This is why I believe the TRAs are wealthy straight white men who are funding this. Who else would have this much influence over the media and politics if they were truly marginalized? I've noticed the rise of dependency on pharmaceuticals and diagnosis. It's making me wonder if it's not that people are having more mental and emotional illnesses but rather our modern day hypercompetitive capitalist society where income inequality is getting worse each year is simply destroying people mentally and physically. Maybe many young kids are being raised in stressful homes where there's a lack of stable role models or authority figures to provide them structure. I can see perhaps they also may not fit within a box that society puts them and think that transitioning would make things easier. The media is absolutely powerful and even more so to young people who have little to no guidance or role models to talk to them. I can see why everyone claims mental illness, nonbinary or trans. They want to have a sense of control or find a tribe to fit into. Predatory older people in the TRA movement, who run mass media and social media networks have found a way to profit off of this.

Now, I do believe in real transgender people but they're a tiny minority, they self-identify before puberty and most mind their business and get the transition once they have the money and independence. Many actually would disagree that pushing it on small kids and normalizing it too much would be damaging. The TRAs are doing a lot of damage to the actual trans community that has existed and blended in and didn't need to make it a huge event. Yes they wanted equality and visibility but not the way that the aggressive TRAs have gone about it.

Gender is biological sex and there's only two. There has never been an intersexed person born who wasn't either male or female when it comes down to the real test - gonads - testes or ovaries. Gender does exist and yes it's based around biological sex and sociocultural roles attached to it. Many cultures throughout history have had multiple gender identities. In fact effeminate gay men and masculine lesbians were considered a separate gender. There were girls raised as boys because families wanted a male heir and considered their own thing. Intersex people had their own designation. But the difference is there was no "self-ID" these roles were given by society and served some purpose of social harmony.

Now the issue is the emphasis on gender essentialism and pushing the idea you need to change your body and genitalia because you don't fit within narrow gender binary. It's not "feeling this or that" which is why self-ID is ridiculous. The only people who should be getting hormone and reassignment surgery are those who are clinically diagnosed with gender dysmorphia and undergo years of therapy and show persistence after adulthood. Once they are 18, they can consent to the surgery.

For people who don’t know, ‘gender’ initially (and still is) a linguistic term. Non-English languages have ‘gendered’ adjectives, nouns, etc. Some more than others. At some point it was introduced as a synonym for (biological) ‘sex’ and Victorian-minded Americans used it because they didn’t want people to think they were referring to coitus when they used the word ‘sex’ (for ‘biological’ sex). That trend then spread outside the US.

Then in the 50s-60s, sexologists including John Money coined / started using the term ‘gender identity’. The problem is, it was only done in an effort to shore up the notion of having a gender identity that could be at odds with one’s sex. People don’t have ‘gender identities’ with the exception of trans-identified people. They just ARE the sex that they are. In recent years, that notion, as well as the term ‘cisgender’, has been normalized so that certain well meaning people have been led to believe that *everyone* has a gender identity (no, we don’t), and ‘cisgender’ and ‘transgender’ are the two types.

In reality, trans-identified people are either men with a paraphilia, or they’re gay men who are so effeminate and ‘identify with’ the opposite sex to the point that they’d rather be perceived by everyone as being members of the opposite sex. In other words, it’s either a fetish or a mental illness. It’s since become a social contagion, spreading to young women and girls first, and then to autistic and mentally ill people.

At worst, it’s leading to all sorts of health problems and dangers to women and children (in the children’s case, the threat is more to their minds and bodies from the ideology, not so much coming from pedophiles or sexual deviants/abusers in the women’s restroom). At best, it just reintroduces and reifies badly outdated sex stereotypes that feminists and we liberals tried to leave behind DECADES ago.
