Mormon Church comes out in support of same-sex marriage law

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said Tuesday it would back proposed federal legislation to safeguard same-sex marriages, marking the latest show of support for the measure from conservative-leaning groups.

The nearly 17-million member, Utah-based faith said in a statement that church doctrine would continue to consider same-sex relationships to be against God's commandments. Yet it said it would support rights for same-sex couples as long as they didn't infringe upon religious groups' right to believe as they choose.

“We believe this approach is the way forward. As we work together to preserve the principles and practices of religious freedom together with the rights of LGBTQ individuals much can be accomplished to heal relationships and foster greater understanding,” the church said in a statement posted on its website.

Support for the Respect for Marriage Act under consideration in Congress is the church's latest step to stake out a more welcoming stance toward the LGBTQ community while holding firm to its belief that same-sex relationships are sinful. Still, its stance toward LGBTQ people — including those who grow up in the church — remains painful for many.

So So So many gay mormons. And I'm not sure if it has something to do with the nature of the religion or the fact that there are so many mormons. Mormons do make very loyal and reliable employees, from what I've heard.

by Anonymousreply 1November 16, 2022 1:08 AM

While I was sleeping, the Mormon church was shifting?

by Anonymousreply 2November 16, 2022 1:13 AM

what? what? what?

by Anonymousreply 3November 16, 2022 1:16 AM

They had no choice when time after time Mormon men were coming or being forced out of the closet, exposing the church's rank hypocrisy. The number of Mormon men who PING to heaven is laughable.

by Anonymousreply 4November 16, 2022 1:18 AM

R1 And even so so so so many more mormon-themed gay porn sites.

by Anonymousreply 5November 16, 2022 1:19 AM

Wouldn't this law make gay marriage a state issue?

by Anonymousreply 6November 16, 2022 1:20 AM

That’s what I am thinking, R6. So it’s not what it sounds like.

by Anonymousreply 7November 16, 2022 1:26 AM

Have the Mama Dragons commented?

by Anonymousreply 8November 16, 2022 1:29 AM

R6/R7. It's sort of a states issue but not quite. You won't necessarily be able to get married in every state but if you get married in a state that allows it, the Federal government and all states must recognize it.

It's OK but it's definitely not as good as Obergefell though. I'm guessing because it's bipartisan the Republicans involved have pushed their agenda.

I can see why the Mormons want it. Performing same-sex marriage will be banned in Utah for sure. I don't see how the law protects "religious freedoms" but that excuse is wearing pretty thing nowadays anyway.

by Anonymousreply 9November 16, 2022 1:36 AM

I think if Congress passed the DOMA repeal, SCOTUS won't ever take up a case against Obergefell.

by Anonymousreply 10November 16, 2022 1:39 AM

^^ Actually, never mind about Utah. Apparently I was unaware of how pro-gay they are. Same-sex marriage is apparently really popular there.

No idea what the Mormons are thinking here. It's funny because apparently the law defines marriage as between two people. Maybe that's why the Mormon Church is for it - to quell the more fundamentalist polygamy groups?

by Anonymousreply 11November 16, 2022 1:40 AM

This just in

hell froze over!

by Anonymousreply 12November 16, 2022 1:42 AM

If Mitt Romney, who did everything short of trip couples walking down the aisle to prevent marriage equality when he was Governor of Massachusetts, votes for this, I will no longer recognize this timeline.

by Anonymousreply 13November 16, 2022 1:44 AM

Can I now watch gay Mormon porn with a clear conscience?

by Anonymousreply 14November 16, 2022 1:47 AM

The ball's now in your court Pope Francis!

by Anonymousreply 15November 16, 2022 1:53 AM

This, after pumping their cult millions into Prop 8?

Fuck 'em and their funny underpants.

by Anonymousreply 16November 16, 2022 1:56 AM

this is especially hilarious given the Mormons' role in passing prop 8 in California

by Anonymousreply 17November 16, 2022 1:56 AM

So the Mormans' are sitting on the fence really. Splinters in their arse and 2 bob each way.

by Anonymousreply 18November 16, 2022 2:06 AM

How many Brother-Husbands can I marry?

by Anonymousreply 19November 16, 2022 2:16 AM

[quote]So the Mormans' are sitting on the fence really.

This way they can keep their morals while moving forward.

by Anonymousreply 20November 16, 2022 2:19 AM

Has Dustin Lance Black commented yet?

by Anonymousreply 21November 16, 2022 2:22 AM

Well, they are polygamists.

by Anonymousreply 22November 16, 2022 2:23 AM

No Christmas movies for them!

by Anonymousreply 23November 16, 2022 2:31 AM

Lots of gay porn stars were raised Mormon. I guess when they rebel they really go for it.

by Anonymousreply 24November 16, 2022 2:37 AM

Ex-Mormon here, anyone that thinks this statement is anything more than blowing smoke up the public's asses is naive.

The church crafted this bullshit PR stunt to cover up the latest line in sexual abuse allegations lodged against them. Their numbers are dropping, one of their most vocal and public celebrities was just on TV saying he left due to their homophobia, and they can't get new members that aren't balding 60 year olds.

They support this law alright: it gives religious freedom exemptions so they don't have to recognize gay marriage in their temples. Let's be real, this is a nothingburger. But secular media loves a good comeback story, so here we go.

[R24] David Archuleta was just spotted at a gay bar this weekend and hanging with an OnlyFans gay couple. It's only a matter of time before he gets his garments rustled in a MormonBoyz special.

by Anonymousreply 26November 16, 2022 2:43 AM

I'm surprised.

But Mormons are practical / pragmatic. They don't believe in gambling, but apparently run a lot of things in Las Vegas.

Also, maybe they see that the Catholic church has painted itself into a corner on stupid issues like this.

By stupid, I mean, who should really care about who marries whom. If you want to be heterosexual, go ahead. But don't stop others from having the same rights you have.

by Anonymousreply 27November 16, 2022 2:56 AM

They are elevating Bishop Angus to lead the church into the future.

It's so if the Republicans win big in 2024, they can totally outlaw abortion by short circuiting the argument that other human rights would be on the chopping block.
