Do you think she would have become a major movie star?
Her heroin addiction stole her career.

The fact that she died young was also a tad inconvenient.

Pitting a bunch of women against a dead one. Great job, Misogyny Troll!
by Anonymous | reply 3 | November 14, 2022 11:06 PM |
Nobody stole it. The Lady died. They didn't do d heroin in her system or her Husbands did they? I'd never heard that.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | November 14, 2022 11:26 PM |
She's sweet in that clip but a bit desperate for attention too. Wonder if that was shot when she was in New York making Sidewalks of New York.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | November 14, 2022 11:56 PM |
None. She was distinctly different in vibe, energy and persona from the ladies listed. They weren't competing for the same parts. Brittany was very talented and probably would have some quirky hit Netflix series and an indie film career by now had she lived.
I'm still confused by why her immune system was so weakened, it was almost full blown aids territory.

Anorexia/bulimia/pills/laxatives/tape worms? She was a little Irish-Italian spark plug who ground herself down into a blonde wasp, she wasn't a happy girl.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | November 15, 2022 1:28 AM |
She died because of her psychopath grifter husband. If she had lived she would have stopped trying to be the blonde leading lady (those parts were beginning to dry up) and be a great character actress. I think she could have won an Oscar, and should have been nominated for Girl, Interrupted, she gave the most memorable performance in that movie.

Dakota Johnson wasn't even acting when Murphy was getting roles OP.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | November 15, 2022 1:32 AM |
Compare her in the above clip to her last interview. I believe she was sick on the night of the Across the Hall premiere.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | November 15, 2022 10:35 AM |
Agree that Brittany had a quirky vibe of her own. I think Natasha Lyonne is similar in terms of indie career, but not as pretty or vulnerable as Brittany Murphy and perhaps not as versatile.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | November 15, 2022 3:42 PM |
She sang in lots of her movies and was supposedly recording an album but the other tracks have not been released. And she was desperate to play Janis Joplin and sing as her.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | November 15, 2022 5:52 PM |
Black tar heroine and free will stole her career
by Anonymous | reply 14 | November 15, 2022 6:12 PM |
I dunno but Kate Beckinsale stole Jane March's career.
She was in movie with Bruce Willis' tiny 🍆
by Anonymous | reply 15 | November 15, 2022 6:19 PM |
I submit that Scarlett Johansson is a good choice for stealing Brittany's career.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | November 15, 2022 6:47 PM |
You can't blame it all on her husband (deceased). Nobody forced her to marry him. I hate to judge someone just on looks, but it's obvious that BM had low self-esteem, just looking at the husband.

I vote Mila Kunis. Brittany could’ve done her role in Black Swan. I just watched Luckiest Girl Alive and I could see Brittany in that role too. Not a MCU star like Scarlett, but a career similar to Mila’s (cartoon voices and banging Ashton Kutcher as well…)
by Anonymous | reply 18 | November 15, 2022 7:09 PM |
ScarJo except for the Marvel stuff. She’d have been perfect in something like Jojo Rabbit.
Why did she get that blonde anorexia makeover? I thought she looked adorable in Clueless and her early films. Kind of like Marisa Tomei’s baby sister. Actually, she could have had a Marisa Tomei career had she lived! Should have done more stage work.

Her mother's bad decisionmaking.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | November 15, 2022 7:17 PM |
She said becoming a blonde got her more work. She was planning to move to New York as it seemed Hollywood was done with her so presumably would have done more stage.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | November 15, 2022 8:00 PM |
^ Stage work like off-off b’way limited engagement kind of stuff? Because I find that people with personality disorders and substance abuse disorders tend to be unreliable for 8 shows a week. Perfect opportunity for a talented understudy though.

#22 = Miss Helen Lawson, currently starring in the musical "Over The Moon".
by Anonymous | reply 23 | November 15, 2022 9:11 PM |
I don't think she had a personality disorder. She did have a substance abuse problem that can probably be traced back to her mother who told her she had a heart condition. Her autopsy said her heart was normal.

R11, she would have been great in a Little Shop of Horrors revival/remake.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | November 15, 2022 9:54 PM |
I think she was a near genius. Yes, she could be described as over the top, but she just brought so much energy and vitality to the table.
She had the "life force", as people like Marilyn and, later, Dolly Parton have been described as possessing.
"If I'm too good for him, how come I'm not *with him*!?"
Can't you just hear that in your head right now?
A lot of people seemed to like her a lot in the 90s Broadway revival of A View from the Bridge. I wonder her life would have taken a different turn had she stuck to stage acting and learned the discipline it takes to become regular theater performer.
"The theory is that Brittany Murphy is trying to channel Marilyn Monroe, but as I watched "Uptown Girls," another name came to mind: Lucille Ball. Murphy has a kind of divine ineptitude that moves beyond Marilyn's helplessness into Lucy's dizzy lovability. She is like a magnet for whoops! moments.
I remember her as a presenter at the 2003 Independent Spirit Awards, where her assignment was to read the names of five nominees, open an envelope and read the winner. This she was unable to do, despite two visits by a stage manager who whispered helpful suggestions into her ear. She kept trying to read every nominee as the winner, and when she finally arrived triumphantly at the real winner, she inspired no confidence that she had it right.
Some thought she was completely clueless, or worse. I studied her timing and speculated that she knew exactly what she was doing, and that while it took no skill at all to get it right, it took a certain genius to get it so perfectly wrong. She succeeded in capturing the attention of every person in that distracted and chattering crowd, and I recalled "Lucy" shows where everyone in a restaurant would suddenly be looking at her.
"Uptown Girls" gives Murphy an opportunity to channel Lucy at feature length. She plays an improbable character in an impossible story, but of course she does. She is Molly Gunn, whose father was a rock star until both parents were killed in a plane crash, leaving her with a collection of guitars and a trust fund administered by someone named Bob. As the story opens, Bob has disappeared with all of her money and she is forced to work for the first time in her life. This does not come easy to a girl whose only skills are as a consumer."

R26 she really was a great comedic actress.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | November 15, 2022 11:27 PM |
So fucking weird that her husband succumbed to what appeared to be the same illness months later.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | November 15, 2022 11:27 PM |
Her acting style me a lot of Marilyn's performing style, actually, before her drag queen-esque serious actress schtick took over. Both Marilyn and Brittany failed to realize what they naturally had was incredible, they didn't to try to overhaul their images.

R31 REMINDS ME Of. Lord.
Amy Adams is an interesting suggestion. She was a million times more vivacious than morose Amy.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | November 15, 2022 11:44 PM |
Amy's whole schtick is " I'm a sad girl woman with a dark secret". It works sometimes but not when she does it in every single fucking film.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | November 15, 2022 11:46 PM |
I'll add that ironically the critically maligned Woman in the Window film was one of the few movies where I thought Adams sad sack energy actually worked. But the critics constant demands that we hand her an Oscar for looking downcast for 2 hours are a bit tiresome.

I saw Clueless on the big screen with my cousin and he thought Tai was played by a chubby Mexican girl.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | November 16, 2022 12:58 AM |
Maybe she was just that good of an actress, but it's hard to watch this and not feel like something quite bad happened to Brittany in her childhood.
"Have fun in Florida."

She always stood out for me. This is the only memorable scene from the movie Riding in Cars with Boys.
