One name higher than the other billing in movies

Just started The Good Nurse and Jessica Chastain comes first on the left but Eddie Redmayne's is higher on the right.

In the Clooney/Roberts ads it is the same thing with her name being slightly higher.

Also smacks of ego to me of the person on the right.

We read right to left here so that person really has top billing.

Hun, this has been going on for decades.

by Anonymousreply 1November 14, 2022 6:00 AM

Name some other cases.

Steve McQueen started it with "The Towering Inferno". Steve insisted on first billed and Fox came up with this.

It also happens in Halloween II with Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasance.

The most creative one was Feud: Bette and Joan with the two marionettes duking it out and Susan Sarandon and Jessica Lange trade off top billing every week.

I read left to right. Always have. Top billing on the same line has always started on the left. That's why the name on the right gets elevated in these aforementioned situations.

You should go on a walk and get some fresh air, OP.

Diagonal Billing, or “Laverne & Shirley” Billing’ goes back all the way to Vaudeville.

I made a mistake r5.

Don't be such a bitch.

by Anonymousreply 7November 14, 2022 6:23 AM

TV shows have been doing this since the beginning of time.

by Anonymousreply 8November 14, 2022 6:55 AM

The Chastain/Redmayne one is odd. She's clearly the lead of the film and a bigger star.

by Anonymousreply 9November 14, 2022 7:03 AM

R9, that's why I think it just artist affect, nothing more. The same with Clooney and Roberts. It's clearly having them share equal billing if the names appear at the same time.

Artistic affect*

Aldo OP are you from Mars. I don't think there is anywhere on this planet where people read right to left.

by Anonymousreply 12November 14, 2022 7:11 AM

It is like that in the credits for MY MAN GODFREY, 1936.

by Anonymousreply 13November 14, 2022 7:20 AM

Who is Aldo r12?

See people make mistakes. You included.

by Anonymousreply 14November 14, 2022 7:28 AM

Are you on the spectrum, OP?

by Anonymousreply 15November 14, 2022 7:30 AM

No film buffs here, tale as old as time.

by Anonymousreply 16November 14, 2022 7:45 AM

Redmayne is even campaigning for Supporting Actor.

" I don't think there is anywhere on this planet where people read right to left."

Here is a list of the main languages that use right to left scripts:

Arabic.

Aramaic.

Azeri.

Dhivehi/Maldivian.

Hebrew.

Kurdish (Sorani)

Persian/Farsi.

Urdu.
