That conversation with Matt and others is a weird one. Shay probably makes the best points - acknowledging that they’re clearly close friends but unlikely to be best friends. Matt is the one that is always asking random people if Kit and Joe were together so he’s clearly a shipper and is therefore biased in that sense. Either way, having this public conversation (mentioning their names so they could come across it) analysing relationships that you don’t know is a tad weird.

Maybe it's because I'm not a teenaged frau, but I haven't given a shit about anointing a "best friend" since high school. I have close friends, good friends, work friends, etc.

That whole thread, in summary: People talking past each other, making assumptions, and feeling threatened by different dynamics/relationships for no valid reason. Thank God I’m not involved in the fandom beyond commenting on these threads.

Found this tweet so they did read bash’s interview about ben before the show and no one actually hate him or try to twist his words back then. I just realized that he also said “ben’s change in season one is very small, but you get the sense that maybe he’s starting to head in a new direction because of it” maybe he got better (but charlie doesn’t need to witness/forgive him) like alice said?

By all accounts the online fandom was a much more rational and nicer place before the series release. They seem to have had a good rapport with the cast, a lot of love for Bash and accepted his relationship with Joe as just part of the scenery.

It makes sense that once the influx of new fans came in without that prior relationship and a fixation on Joe and Kit they were shocked to see the ‘bad guy’ front and centre of fan engagement and in the way of their fantasy. What then happened was a pretty relentless campaign of harassment against Bash based on blurring the lines between him and his character, and many of the existing fans got sucked into the idea he was ‘problematic’ because online herd dynamics are a very real thing and they just didn’t have the self awareness to understand where the toxicity was coming from.

It was pretty grim watching that come to a head a few weeks back and see how completely they had lost touch with reality and were prepared to attack him and Joe over nothing. At the same time any adult analysis of Ben’s character, or even tolerance of his continued presence in the story, is now so taboo you’re immediately denounced as an abuse supporter.

It’s basically good old fashioned mass hysteria triggered by a months long toxic campaign by sad bullies who having had no previous knowledge of the cast were completely unable to separate the characters from the actors or let go of their Joe Kit fantasy

Rhea’s already wrapped filming season 2 (same as bash I guess) maybe this is why they posted those paris pics.

I'm assuming everyone is done but the main four. This might be their last week or maybe next.

I would guess so as well I think it was always slated to wrap by the beginning if December.

I do wonder though if they’ll have a last day or two filming near the end of an ensemble scene for a get together a bit like they did with the Sports Day filming in series one.

I’ve thought a logical place to end this series (unless they add a lot of extra storylines) would be the New Year party after Charlie comes home from hospital. There was a scene from the online comics that sticks in my mind of the the three central couples kissing with a backdrop of fireworks, and it would fit the bill for a Heartstopper style uplifting ending as well as bringing everyone back on set before the final wrap.

R51 that’s a nice thought for end of an episode S3 or end of season; I think Charlie isn’t hospitalized until volumes that are getting adapted for S3. My guess is they end a relatively “sadder” season 2 (Charlie’s mental health and self harm issues) with the I love you scene for an uplifting note.

My guess is bash and Rhea wrapped last week, thus his (likely) staying with his sister for a few days; Kizzy, Cori, Leila, and Tobie are either wrapped or wrapping this week thus the nostalgic posts, and Yaz and Will will finish up shortly before Joe and Kit.

R47 That person doesn't seem heavy into the fandom. Also after S1 aired a lot of people became unable to separate the actors from the characters. Things only really started to get bad with the Bash hate this summer for whatever reason. Not too surprised they now go after Bash any chance they get now, espeically since Ben came back when a lot convinced themselves he was done.

Kit was also basically a ghost online pre show; it was a fan joke that they had never seen him without sunglasses and bash posted once with the caption “proof kit was there”. Fans were more attached to Bash and Joe who were/are prettt clearly dating and were chattier and more engaged online. When the show came out and Kit did interviews etc, they transferred a lot of character love onto him (I like kit a lot and think he seems lovely but also obviously a bit snarky and sensitive, but they’re obsessed with the idea that he’s as sweet and mild mannered as Nick) and started getting annoyed bash got “too much attention” - especially the fans who weren’t around pre show and didn’t understand why bash had so much popularity

One of the issues is that Alice created an unrealistically perfect boyfriend character that doesn't actually exist - no teenager is going to be like that in real life, with zero flaws, so it must be a bit weird for Kit when people project and assume he's exactly like Nick. Although with the snark thing, I find that hard to work out because we only seem to see that side of him online, and multiple people that know him have said that he's gentle and a softy. So I think it's a combination of how he comes across online (limited emojis, few words) and also that he's usually tweeting in response to something that's upset him a bit.

The idea that Ben would be finished after Series One was always ridiculous. New characters were already introduced and more would be coming why take out an important if unlikeable pre existing one? The material from the comics would barely have stretched to three episodes.

It also ignores how important Bash is to the cast dynamic, even ignoring his relationship with Joe. Any group, especially for a creative project, works off of the alchemy of it’s members and they always have that one person who is the social glue that holds it all together. When a project works as well as Heartstopper did it’s a big risk to the magic created to just pull out a key part because the character he plays is a dick.

I wouldn’t expect these very young fans to really understand that or why he was always going to be kept on board.

And Ben’s character is important in his own right. Many older queer people, especially gay men, relate to him because we’ve all known a Ben or even been a Ben ourselves. Telling his story in a well rounded way was vital, being allowed to talk about the toxic effects of internalised homophobia and self hatred is vital.

These supposedly enlightened teenagers very illiberal stance that a very damaged 16 year old queer child is irredeemably evil and with no possibility of redemption or even space for conversation is both brutal and very damaging for everyone. And the belief that eternally punishing him for the damage he did to a fictional character in a story is somehow virtuous even when it involves the bullying and harassment of real queer teen actors who have done nothing wrong.

The whole thing has been bizarre and depressing to witness

How do you know it’s only 6 episodes? Why would they change the format? I assumed the faster schedule was due to having to work around other cast work commitments and all the main cast now being over18 so less working time restrictions and enforced rest days.

Shooting for season 1 started on April 5 and most cast wrapped around June 16. Season 2 started shooting on Sep. 13, so I don't see a big difference.

In many ways bash and to an extent Joe have the best of both worlds; the social media following and name recognition that comes with being a popular member of a popular show without feeling as beholden to the truly deranged minor contingent of HS fans who hold kit up as a holy grail who can do no wrong and are themselves unpleasant and annoying. I think Kit is actually way more interesting and funnier than they would like him / make him out to be and enjoy his snark, but they simplify him to “pure wholesome golden retriever” and I worry it’ll backfire on him in s way Joe and Bash are free from, even while it sucks that they get fandom hate.

Fans really do think the cast is their friends. Then the article about Bash saying he was bullied and hated his legs came out and they were real quiet. Fans constantly overstep. Probably because of the cast being young so they think they are peers. I think with Bash it's probably even worse since he's so kind and will have conversations with them.

Not even so. Will is carving out a niche in music; he seems to like fashion and acting well enough but it’s pretty clear neither is his primary passion. Bash clearly loves and thinks a lot about fashion; he developed a connection with Harry Lambert over the course of a year that’s now paying off. If their favourites don’t want to or can’t sell themselves and make connections it’s not Bash’s fault he has social skills. I say this liking Will, btw.

I mean to be fair there’s a middle ground. I think she was invited solo as well and has every right to post and enjoy her solo shots but I do think her presence was predicated on two castmates winning MOTY. Even if it wasn’t she was seated at their table. Is she obliged to hype them or a huge arsehole for not doing so? I don’t think so. Can people still point out it is optically nicer and bash comes off as a sweeter and more caring person for hyping Joe and Kit? Sure. I like Yaz fine and don’t think she’s a bad person for not posting about them, but I’m not going to be as big a fan as I am of the cast who hype one another and seem genuinely thrilled for one another’s success. Also for what it’s worth; her posting her costar from another project who was also just a guest seems to be what pushed a lot of people into annoyance. Throwing in one random “me with some of my favourite boys” about the pic of her with Joe, Kit, and Ncuti would’ve come across a bit better.

The comparison with Will would make more sense if he had posted pictures of himself with like, James McAvoy or something and not posted anything about Joe and Kit. Will also said that it was "really exciting to be here with the boys" in the article you mentioned. This isn't about Yaz owing Joe and Kit or anything like, it's that she sometimes acts a little strangely as a friend. It's a bit baffling to me.

Half that shit is just people trolling, don't think anyone was that bothered even if he could have picked a picture that wasn't the back of Joe's head. Though didn't seem like Joe cared since he was making out in the VIP area with him and then holding hands watching Adele hours later

R234 I will say as someone who is pretty active on DL about them it is a little funny because there is a tendency that I have also sometimes done to have real thinkpieces about how they must feel etc. after particular things - that Pride upset Joe as Bash maintained a distance from him and didn’t post pics; that the Olivia thing was a purposeful PR stunt from Bash; that Joe is hiding Bash and never takes him anywhere as a plus one. Meanwhile every time, it turns out later they’re extremely fine, from the clips and pics of them at Pride that came out later and the VIP tent and Adele stuff, to them turning up at the music festival together and being all over each other 2 days after Olivia, to Joe bringing him to the GQ event yesterday.

I think they’re way more secure in themselves and the relationship than we give them credit for, probably because if they’re this blatantly obsessed with one another while trying to be private (Joe beating bash to the punch in posting about his film, Bash following every Marvel related account when Joe was cast) they must be truly hilariously over the top in private. The only thing that does seem to have thrown them was the DM article; even then they seemed more pissed about the media speculating on them while they’re teenagers as they’ve now gone back to linking arms all over the place and cuddling and being affectionate at Disney etc. don’t think they’re in a rush to confirm or draw that attention but they seem quite laidback about it
