Democrats Maintain Control Of The Senate

Sen. Cortez Masto's campaign reacts to her Nevada win: "She proved everyone wrong again"

Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto’s (D-Nev.) win over Republican Adam Laxalt in Nevada clinched the 50th vote for Democrats after days of uncertainty over thousands of mail-in ballots. Georgia’s Senate race, whose impact may be felt more strongly in 2024, will be determined by a Dec. 6 runoff election.

Bye evil MAGA/Q.

by Anonymousreply 2November 13, 2022 2:15 AM

Preliminary exit polls showed that fewer than a third of voters saw inflation as the defining issue of the election, with the survival of democracy and abortion rights weighing just as heavily in their minds. Attacking Democrats over crime also didn’t appear to be the winning strategy that Republicans had envisioned.

by Anonymousreply 3November 13, 2022 2:16 AM

It was rigged, and we stole it!!

by Anonymousreply 4November 13, 2022 2:18 AM

Yes! Yes!

Now to win Georgia so Manchin and Sinema won't matter.

Democrats keep control of the Senate, a major victory for Biden's agenda

Several elections in battleground states were deemed toss-ups ahead of the midterms, but Democrats were able to hold on to key seats, including Arizona and Nevada.

Federal judges can be approved without McConnell having the ability to block anyone.

Now if only Biden could appoint a justice to the Supreme Court.

by Anonymousreply 8November 13, 2022 2:24 AM

R7, DUH.

by Anonymousreply 9November 13, 2022 2:24 AM

If Warnock wins Georgia, only half of Manchin/Sinema duo will be negated. But if the Repugs win the House, not a lot will get to the Senate anyway that isn't bipartisan.

by Anonymousreply 10November 13, 2022 2:25 AM

We did it, Joe!

Nice warm news on a cold night.

by Anonymousreply 12November 13, 2022 2:27 AM

With this victory of Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto in Nevada, the Dems currently have 50 senators. If Raphael Warnock can beat that idiot Herschel Walker in the Dec 6 runoff, we will have 51.

by Anonymousreply 15November 13, 2022 2:38 AM

Can we also get a new Senate majority leader that will actually take advantage of having the majority?

With a Republican House, R16, the only thing the Senate Dems can do is confirm judges & executive branch appointments. And block House legislation.

Thank Cher for what?

I thank Women, especially young women of color and Gen Z who pushed the Dems over the edge.

by Anonymousreply 22November 13, 2022 2:44 AM

I phoned my Senators and Congressman, and told them to have the Jan. 6th committee's notes and papers forwarded to the Democratic Senate and let the Senate take over the investigation, in case Repubs take over the House in January. But there are still a lot of competitive races for Dems to win. Phone/e-mail your elected officials as well. Repubs would try to shut it down, but why can't they just move all the stuff they have to the other side of the building now that Dems control the Senate (if they need to)?

by Anonymousreply 23November 13, 2022 2:45 AM

That means Biden can get his judges approved by the Senate and McConnell can just suck it.

by Anonymousreply 24November 13, 2022 2:46 AM

This is major just from the judicial point of view. Even if the Rethugs get the house, it won't be by a big enough margin that there won't be hysterics, threats, blood, sweat and tears.

It's a hard stop on Republican insanity.

by Anonymousreply 25November 13, 2022 2:47 AM

Good News.

I know we will be on a deadlock and not get anything passed next year and that's why Biden pushed all those Bills this year like a maniac- Infrastructure, American Rescue Act, etc.

No doubt, R21, especially if a High Court vacancy occurs, but let’s not delude ourselves into thinking that any agenda items are going to be passed by the new Congress.

by Anonymousreply 29November 13, 2022 2:53 AM

Trump can stand only so much disappointment. Repeatedly, he's reminded how his second daughter, Tiffany, is not so hot. And then, this.

by Anonymousreply 30November 13, 2022 3:00 AM

When will we know which party controls the House? Which results are we waiting to come in for that?

by Anonymousreply 31November 13, 2022 3:01 AM

It might take a week or two, possibly more. There are like 19 races, 10 out of California alone, that are still being counted.

by Anonymousreply 32November 13, 2022 3:03 AM

R28,. If they don't, it would give the Dems a good justification to vote against GOP. The voters will be younger and more energized about Democracy in 2024

I became clinically depressed in the early hours of Tuesday evening. Yes, Trump lost in 2020, but if you look at the numbers it was by a very small number of votes in the electoral college.

Since 2020, Steve Bannon's been systemically dismantling all the safeguards that kept Trump from stealing the election. He was targeting the Brad Raffenspergers- the SoSs and state legislatures would be ready to hand electors over to Trump in 2024, when they refused to do so in 2020.

This was how I was looking at everything- how it would impact the election of 2024. At about 11pm (PST) the tide stated to turn, and the news has been getting better and better. The AZ and MI SoS and AG stays blue, and many state legislatures have flipped blue. The people made it much much harder for Trump to try to steal the election in 2024, instead of much easier as I'd feared.

For me, DEMOCRACY won this election cycle. And Steve Bannon and Donald Trump LOST big time! I'm giddy about it.

by Anonymousreply 49November 13, 2022 9:59 AM

48, 48 and 2. The world is whole again!

by Anonymousreply 50November 13, 2022 10:05 AM

Are we out of the woods on Trumpism, and the grave threat to democracy? Too early to say for sure. Obviously, Trump's loss in 2020 was a significant setback for them. I think this 2022 loss is even more significant. Though Trump still has the numbers to be the nominee, he's disgusted enough independents and sensible Republicans that I think winning in the general election would be very hard for him.

I think we come out of 2020 in SO much better shape. And hopefully Garland takes this opportunity to nail the fucking scumshit to the wall.

by Anonymousreply 51November 13, 2022 10:06 AM

R50 fu-k off. You LOST. You can do you're "la dee da they're all the same so nit doesn't matter" shtick all you want- doesn't change the fact that you're a fuckig lowlife Trump supporter. And, again, YOU LOST!

"the only thing the Senate Dems can do is confirm judges"

The ONLY thing. Fuck outta here, MAGAt R19. Cunt.

"If Warnock wins Georgia, only half of Manchin/Sinema duo will be negated."

Works for me, R10.

MAGAts trying to pretend this doesn't matter.

by Anonymousreply 53November 13, 2022 10:41 AM

Guarantee you that the next senator from WVa will be a Republican. Machin either doesn’t run, is defeated or switches parties in the next race there.

by Anonymousreply 54November 13, 2022 10:46 AM

The "Democrats have to do better" troll at R44 seems to forget this was a midterms election. The fact that the Democrats have so far prevented the House from having a majority (and that's not over yet) AND kept control of the Senate is unheard of in a midterm election when it ALWAYS goes to the other party, especially with inflation and a president that has low approval ratings.

Yet "Democrats have to do better." 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

by Anonymousreply 55November 13, 2022 10:49 AM

Further if Warnock wins, his 6-yr term serves as slight buffer for Dem Senate to retain control in '24, because >1/3rd of states will be re-electing their senators

by Anonymousreply 56November 13, 2022 10:50 AM

[quote]Democrats have to do better.

by Anonymousreply 57November 13, 2022 10:56 AM

R53. Yeah, trolls are all over DL trying to pretend these results aren't great and a good sign for Democrats.

"Not good enough" is their mantra and it's so transparent that it's intended to demoralize and divide us.

by Anonymousreply 58November 13, 2022 11:18 AM

DL MAGAt trolls are so pathetic. LOSERS.

by Anonymousreply 59November 13, 2022 11:24 AM

It’s hardly being a troll &/or a MAGAt to try to inject some reality into the conversation. Winning the Senate IS delicious. It ensures the confirmation of federal judges, &, hopefully, a new Supreme Court judge if a right-wing justice retires or dies. But as long as the Republicans flip (???) the House, they, alone, can stop any other part of the Democratic agenda from being advanced. Even in our great, unexpected, joy, can anyone seriously doubt that?!

by Anonymousreply 60November 13, 2022 12:05 PM

R60, the House hasn't been flipped, yet, anyway, and as it stands the Republicans need 218 to have a majority. That's the current reality, in a midterm election that was supposed to be a red wave. And it's not over yet.

by Anonymousreply 61November 13, 2022 12:09 PM

Hallelujah! Hallelujah....Hallelujan....H A L L E L U J A H! Even if the House flips, I'm so happy the Democrats kept the Senate. :)

by Anonymousreply 65November 13, 2022 2:18 PM

Michael Beschloss, the noted historian, on MSNBC said that this was the best, most historic result for a sitting President's party at midterms in 90 years! Michael seems like a really nice guy, too.

by Anonymousreply 66November 13, 2022 3:18 PM

Don't let trolls fool you. This was an ASTOUNDING victory for Democrats, and for democracy itself. In off year elections, the party in the White House loses a MASSIVE number of seats. In 1994, Slick Willie lost 50 seats. Obama lost 63 in 2010. Scumfuck lost 40 in 2018.

The average is a 37 seat LOSS. And, let's face it, inflation, gas prices, and Biden's low approval ratings set the stage for a loss on the higher end, far exceeding 37.

Losing 37 seats for the Democrats would've been the historical expectation. Considering inflation, and gas prices, and Gerrymandering, again, it should've been MORE than 37.

That the loss will be 4 or 5 seats is REMARKABLE. That is a seismic shift in the behavior of the electorate. Who or what do we credit? I think SCOTUS' horrible abortion decision, which came down at the worst possible time for the GOP, is certainly a contributing factor. As is the fact that Trump's plans, and willingness, to subvert, and discard democracy became crystal clear- moreso than they were going into 2020. Which goes hand in hand with the unprecedented number of young people who voted. Something motivated them to vote- maybe Hobbs, maybe how awful Trump was, maybe climate change or gun violence. Whatever the case, I welcome them aboard.

Lastly, something I've been reluctant to say out loud- I know that if you lived in a red state, and you refused the vaccination, and you were over 62, you were much more likely to die. I think many older MAGA Americans simply weren't around to vote anymore.

Anyway, don't look at it as us having a thin majority in Congress. Look at it as us having WON 37 seats we should've lost. Huge victory going forward.

by Anonymousreply 67November 14, 2022 5:41 AM

I'm going to be Debbie Downer and say this should have been a massive blue tsunami. Deplorables don't vote midterm, and this was a year of abortion rights, Trump scandals, student loan struggles, voter intimidation... Democrats barely squeaked by, as usual.

They say the U.S. is essentially a liberal country. So where are we?

by Anonymousreply 68November 14, 2022 2:45 PM

Deplorables dont vote in midterms? Republicans famously show up more at midterms than Democrats, right?

by Anonymousreply 69November 14, 2022 2:56 PM

[quote] They say the U.S. is essentially a liberal country.

Who says this?

by Anonymousreply 70November 14, 2022 3:02 PM

Everything R68 says is bullshit:

Republicans are, in fact, major voters in midterms. They were just saying that on NBC this morning.

The U.S. is NOT an overall liberal country (that was particularly amusing to me, that one)

This was a midterm in which inflation, a president's historically low approval rating, and high prices for utilities were all on the ballot. It was also a midterm in which the opposing party, the one not in the WH, ALWAYS pounds the other party. Instead, it was the best midterm result for a sitting administration since Kennedy was predsident.

So, Debbie Downer at R68, you're all kinds of wrong.

But keep fucking that chicken that this midterms election wasn't a HUGE boost to Democrats.

by Anonymousreply 71November 14, 2022 3:14 PM

[quote]this should have been a massive blue tsunami.

In my mind, it should have been a wave election, too... and then I recall that women vote against their self interests with a passion; that poor people vote against their self interests with a passion; that rural folks vote against their self interests with a passion; that immigrants vote against their self interests with a passion...

by Anonymousreply 72November 15, 2022 4:12 PM

Fraud. FRAUD. I no longer have patience for the Democrats and I'm side-eyeing anyone who does. This is appalling.

by Anonymousreply 73November 15, 2022 4:15 PM

Oh, piss off, Debbie Downer.

This election was a huge victory for the Democrats. Deal with it.

by Anonymousreply 74November 15, 2022 4:19 PM

Hey, R73--EAT SHIT! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

by Anonymousreply 75November 15, 2022 6:53 PM

LOL - Rick Scott is going to mount a challenge to McConnell for Senate minority leader.

I can't decide whether my desire to watch McConnell to reap what he sowed is greater than my concern that Scott would be even less willing to negotiate than McConnell whose decades in office (seven terms since 1985) make him a throwback to an earlier time when negotiation was a real thing.

by Anonymousreply 76November 15, 2022 8:01 PM

R76, while it's fun to watch McConnell get a flick on his nuts from a member of his own party, the rest of Senate Repugs will be firmly behind the turtle, not the MAGAt.
