Don't let trolls fool you. This was an ASTOUNDING victory for Democrats, and for democracy itself. In off year elections, the party in the White House loses a MASSIVE number of seats. In 1994, Slick Willie lost 50 seats. Obama lost 63 in 2010. Scumfuck lost 40 in 2018.
The average is a 37 seat LOSS. And, let's face it, inflation, gas prices, and Biden's low approval ratings set the stage for a loss on the higher end, far exceeding 37.
Losing 37 seats for the Democrats would've been the historical expectation. Considering inflation, and gas prices, and Gerrymandering, again, it should've been MORE than 37.
That the loss will be 4 or 5 seats is REMARKABLE. That is a seismic shift in the behavior of the electorate. Who or what do we credit? I think SCOTUS' horrible abortion decision, which came down at the worst possible time for the GOP, is certainly a contributing factor. As is the fact that Trump's plans, and willingness, to subvert, and discard democracy became crystal clear- moreso than they were going into 2020. Which goes hand in hand with the unprecedented number of young people who voted. Something motivated them to vote- maybe Hobbs, maybe how awful Trump was, maybe climate change or gun violence. Whatever the case, I welcome them aboard.
Lastly, something I've been reluctant to say out loud- I know that if you lived in a red state, and you refused the vaccination, and you were over 62, you were much more likely to die. I think many older MAGA Americans simply weren't around to vote anymore.
Anyway, don't look at it as us having a thin majority in Congress. Look at it as us having WON 37 seats we should've lost. Huge victory going forward.
