Overboard (1987)

I watched Overboard last night for the first time in years! What a fun comedy. Let's discuss.

After a rich bitch falls overboard, a poor carpenter claims she is his wife and the mother of their kids.

Directed by Gary Marshall

Written by Leslie Dixon

Music by Randy Newman and Alan Silvestri

Starring Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell, Edward Herrmann, Katherine Helmond, Michael Hagerty, and Roddy McDowall as Andrew

I love Grant's partying scenes.

by Anonymousreply 1November 12, 2022 2:51 PM

Saw this a few years ago and it's so good. Goldie Hawn is hilarious in it. Not knowing her career, I got why she had one from seeing this.

by Anonymousreply 2November 12, 2022 2:52 PM

The hillbilly nature of his town and house in Oregon is spot on.

by Anonymousreply 3November 12, 2022 2:54 PM

R1 Wasn't John Edwards' baby mama in one of those scenes?

by Anonymousreply 4November 12, 2022 2:54 PM

I love this movie. It's one of the few movies I can watch over and over again.

by Anonymousreply 5November 12, 2022 2:54 PM

Kurt was GORGEOUS in that.

by Anonymousreply 8November 12, 2022 3:04 PM

Father Time has beaten the life out of both of them, badly!

by Anonymousreply 9November 12, 2022 3:08 PM

How's Kurt looking these days? He sure was cute back in '87!

by Anonymousreply 10November 12, 2022 3:11 PM

As much I love Anna Faris, there was no need to make a gender and racially swapped remake.

Katherine Helmond looked ridiculous in this

Gaslighting? That's the whole premise of the movie! What a twat

by Anonymousreply 13November 12, 2022 3:34 PM

It's a fun movie

by Anonymousreply 14November 12, 2022 4:19 PM

What is that Twittertwat at R12 bitching about? What is wrong with younger people? They can't take a movie for what it is? A fun comedy.

by Anonymousreply 15November 12, 2022 4:22 PM

"She has no tits, but a great ass"

by Anonymousreply 16November 12, 2022 4:27 PM

I jerked off to this bit recently. Kurt is delicious man-ness of the highest order here. Like Bruce Willis in Color of Night and some other movies, and Jason Patric in After Dark, My Sweet, his body here is ever so slightly close to not being fit. Juicy and luscious.

Could they re-make this movie, perhaps with a holiday theme?

Oh wait....

No one was brought up Roddy McDowall as Andrew, the butler

by Anonymousreply 19November 12, 2022 4:36 PM

R17 - 100% yes. Peak Kurt.

by Anonymousreply 20November 12, 2022 4:38 PM

I always thought it was a softer lighter version of Lina Wermüller's Swept Away (1974).

by Anonymousreply 21November 12, 2022 4:39 PM

I'm more into Edward Herrmann than Kurt Russell

by Anonymousreply 22November 12, 2022 4:40 PM

Goldie was very good in this. That's why, in the DL First Wives' Club thread, I thought she was paid the most as an actress.

by Anonymousreply 23November 12, 2022 4:41 PM

I hate almost having to wait too.

by Anonymousreply 24November 12, 2022 4:46 PM

[quote]his body here is ever so slightly close to not being fit. Juicy and luscious

Datalounge is so obsessed with guys being SUPER FIT, that we can't even express our admiration for sexy guys without first "acknowledging" that they're not 100% perfectly fit and trim.

by Anonymousreply 25November 12, 2022 4:48 PM

Love it but I'm surprised it hasn't been cancelled considering the gaslighting and what would many now consider rape.

But I love it. Goldie Hawn will forever be one of the most underrated comedic actresses of all time

by Anonymousreply 26November 12, 2022 4:49 PM

R26 no they did not have sex until she was ready, which was after their anniversary date.

by Anonymousreply 27November 12, 2022 4:51 PM

R21 LOVE that film. Probably my favorite directed by a woman. This would be a much better "remake" of sorts than that shit Madonna remake.

by Anonymousreply 28November 12, 2022 4:51 PM

R27 she didnt know who she was though, or who he really was..you could argue she could not give informed concerned (don't shoot the messengerI think its beyond stupid but alot of rabid SJW feminists would say that now).

by Anonymousreply 29November 12, 2022 4:54 PM

R29*informed consent

by Anonymousreply 30November 12, 2022 4:54 PM

If you have a baby, you won't be the baby anymore.

by Anonymousreply 31November 12, 2022 4:55 PM

I thought it was good satire of the 1980's. Joanna and Grant definitely voted for Ronald Reagan.

by Anonymousreply 32November 12, 2022 4:58 PM

R28, I think, even in the days, the film wouldn't have been accepted if it had been made by a man.

For me, Overboard is the funny remake/adaptation. As you say, not the lousy Madonna vehicule.

Now, who do we prefere : 1987 Kurt Russell or 1974 Giancarlo Giannini ?

by Anonymousreply 33November 12, 2022 4:59 PM

Goldie made some great movies. Private Benjamin and the oft neglected Protocol are my favorites.

by Anonymousreply 34November 12, 2022 4:59 PM

Has there ever been a gay pron parody of this movie?

by Anonymousreply 35November 12, 2022 5:00 PM

I do like how Goldie Hawn adopts the Mid-Atlantic accent in the beginning of the movie.

Edward Herrmann, Katherine Helmond, and Roddy McDowall have always had it.

by Anonymousreply 36November 12, 2022 5:01 PM

R33 Definitely Giannini (or his son, who is the only decent thing in the 2002 version) but I wouldn't kick Kurt out of my bed either.

Yeah Swept Away says everything Overboard doesnt (though it hints) about politics and male/female power dynamics. It's such an intelligent film, though show it to any millenial/Z-er and they'd have a stroke.

by Anonymousreply 37November 12, 2022 5:06 PM

I love a good kidnapping, rape, conspiracy, and forced slavery rom-com.

by Anonymousreply 38November 12, 2022 5:09 PM

by Anonymousreply 39November 12, 2022 5:15 PM

by Anonymousreply 41November 12, 2022 5:32 PM

Goldie Hawn as an Ice Queen Bitch From Hell - already I’m sold. She’s so damn likable that seeing her do nasty is just…. It’s why I go to the movies.

Oh, and Kurt, dear lord. No wonder it’s a classic.

by Anonymousreply 42November 12, 2022 5:39 PM

"What is that odor?" I love when that bitchy pre amnesia Goldie Hawn asks that. That's just the primal Kurt Russell smell. Hawt!

And I love that reaction when she responds to the closet with all the different compartments for her shoes.

Seriously i, I haven't seen this movie in 20 years but I still remember it! I guess that's what a good film does.

by Anonymousreply 43November 12, 2022 5:50 PM

I just...ATE A BUG!

🪲

by Anonymousreply 44November 12, 2022 6:15 PM

Incredible sweet, sexual chemistry between these two always.

They should have made more movies together. They could've just dusted off some old scripts from the 30s and 40s and had Carrie Fisher slightly modernize the dialogue and improve it where possible.

by Anonymousreply 45November 12, 2022 6:47 PM

R45 They always seemed happy together

by Anonymousreply 46November 12, 2022 7:45 PM

I don't think they're that happy anymore, at least not Goldie. Goldie has posted videos on her Instagram and when she's not putting on a giggling schoolgirl performance, she has a very brittle demeanor. I also remember Kurt talking in an interview about how they've both threatened to leave each other over the years.

I think they stay together for their family and the public image.

by Anonymousreply 47November 12, 2022 9:23 PM

They were papped on a yacht and were canoodling. I doubt at their age they need to fake it and I think it's rumored they have an open marriage.

by Anonymousreply 48November 12, 2022 9:36 PM

Of course, celebrities never know when they're being papped!

by Anonymousreply 49November 12, 2022 9:38 PM

They're still not married tho

by Anonymousreply 50November 12, 2022 9:38 PM

Of course celebs know R49. My point is I think these two don't give a shit and they are not doing a pr relationships like Cavill or Taylor Swift.

by Anonymousreply 51November 12, 2022 9:52 PM

They have been together since 1983. 40 years. Any couple that has been together for 40 years has most likely threatened to leave, divorce, etc.

At 40 years together and in your mid-70's, what is the point of starting over?

by Anonymousreply 52November 12, 2022 9:53 PM

That's basically what Kurt said in the interview, what's the point of leaving? But I don't think there's a lot of love there

by Anonymousreply 53November 13, 2022 12:18 AM

I never realized this movie wasn’t a hit. It’s funny how certain films just find a second life on TV or video and become “classics.”

It was MGM's big Christmas release that year and bombed, so they switched their backing to Moonstruck.

by Anonymousreply 63November 13, 2022 3:26 AM

The movie was reissued on Blu-Ray last year. It still holds up. A really fun comedy that is both funny and romantic. Goldie was a great star and she and Kurt were great together.

The film has enough plot holes but somehow they don't matter because the script and the chemistry between Hawn and Russell is so strong.

You don't shove the food down Shitake's throat. You place it on her tongue. Don't they have dogs in Sweden?

by Anonymousreply 68November 13, 2022 4:32 AM

This was based on Wertmuller's Swept Away. It wasn't bad but it was tons better than Madonna's abortion of a remake.

by Anonymousreply 69November 13, 2022 4:40 AM

Well! I almost had to wait.

by Anonymousreply 70November 13, 2022 5:02 AM

They did do a nice job of making the movie palatable in spite of it being about gaslighting, they made him emphasize over and over that he wasn't going to do anything worse to her than make her work off the money she owed him. That made him seem decent and honest, and rather than abusive.

And that's the difference between a family comedy, and a realistic movie...
