I know I missed quite a few but there were only ten spots, and these are the ones I like.
Who is your favorite female alternative rock singer?

Courtney, no question. There are few women rock singers who match her ferociousness. Kat Bjelland of Babes in Toyland does, but her style is a lot different—Kat is pure hellfire and brimstone, while Courtney has a tangible softness to her that is buried underneath all that piss and vinegar. KatieJane Garside of Daisy Chainsaw/Queen Adreena is also an honorable mention—she is unhinged but brilliant. As much as I love Fiona Apple and Kate Bush, they don't belong in this category. And don't even get me started on Tori Amos.

r2 I know virtually any band still performing or got their start in the 90s is labeled as "alternative" now. . . alternative had a distinctive sound and was merely a subgenre of rock, to which a few those fall into separate subgenres... subgenres which also had their own subcultures and cliques. Like kids today can't even tell the difference between dreampop and shoegaze. Just as their were east coast / west coast wars in rap, there were these battles in everything else... and yes, even some subgenres centered on styles associated within the demographics of a certain region, some even specific cities, based on a certain time period. - funny, how now to young people everything is alternative, the same way one's grandparents would have trouble understanding it then. I suppose it's all quite irrelevant. It's all been reduced to store and elevator muzak.

Despite achieving widespread popularity, the Eurythmics and Annie Lenox are still alternative. She's an icon.

I have been a huge Kate Bush fan since Wuthering Heights. She is a total original.

Annie Lennox, sorry.

Katiejane Garside is an incredible vocalist, oscillating from childish whispers to throat-crushing screaming. Utterly crazy, and I love her.

I have just this morning learned about a group called Low that emerged in the Midwest in the 90s. The singer/drummer, Mimi Parker, just died, only 55. Apparently the band's been going for 30 years and though they never had a hit single, were at least somewhat influential to other grunge bands, some who went on to greater success. Anyone else heard of Mimi/Low? The descriptions of her singing and their music intrigued me, so I'm off to check out their oeuvre.

R11 yes, I saw them live once as an opening act. Very minimalist rock music, often gloomy, slow-moving, and repetitive. Mimi was the drummer/singer. They were an interesting band and pretty influential. A lot of music nerds know who they are, but they were not really known by the general public.

Kate Bush, though I wouldn't call her alternative rock.
