Terrible. Sorry to read this.

I hope Bette coughs up enough money to keep him in caregivers. I'd say that's the least she can do.

by Anonymousreply 2November 12, 2022 12:52 AM

Open your wallet, Bette, instead of asking others for help. What a cheap bitch.

by Anonymousreply 3November 12, 2022 12:53 AM

Doesn't SAG take care of their members?

by Anonymousreply 4November 12, 2022 1:01 AM

No, R4.

by Anonymousreply 5November 12, 2022 1:11 AM

That’s what I thought r4 so she’s promoting g his Gofundme.

by Anonymousreply 6November 12, 2022 1:12 AM

I had no idea he was so old ! I agree with what R3 said. She could easily pay for his care for the rest of his life and not even notice it.Cheap bitch.

by Anonymousreply 7November 12, 2022 1:27 AM

Yeah, Midler shouldn't be asking non-multi-millionaires to contribute. Cunt could write a check the way others drop pennies.

by Anonymousreply 8November 12, 2022 1:30 AM

how much is Bette worth?

by Anonymousreply 9November 12, 2022 1:33 AM

$280 million, R9.

by Anonymousreply 10November 12, 2022 1:34 AM

Or maybe only $250 million.

If his family has set up a GOFUNDME, Bette is doing the right thing.

by Anonymousreply 13November 12, 2022 1:42 AM

And, R13, she can do the much better thing and tell the family to send the bills to her.

by Anonymousreply 14November 12, 2022 1:44 AM

I thought there was an "Old Actors' Home" somewhere in LA for indigent senior thespians.

by Anonymousreply 15November 12, 2022 1:59 AM

One, those "celebrity net worth" things are complete bullshit.

Two, why the hell should Bette Midler pay all the expenses for someone she worked with 40+ years ago? For a period of probably about 8 weeks or so.

Frederic Forrest also worked with Coppola many times. Should he pony up, too?

Also, why are you assuming she HASN'T contributed? She could very likely be that high donation of $10k.

If she crowed about how much she donated, you'd totally roast her.

by Anonymousreply 16November 12, 2022 2:00 AM

R16, she sold her apartment for $50 million ON TOP of what she's already worth. It's not complete bullshit at all to put her net worth at 9 figures.

And she didn't contribute enough, if the $60 K goal hasn't even been met. And sure, Coppola should also contribute.

Any other questions?

by Anonymousreply 17November 12, 2022 2:10 AM

He was married to Marilu Henner for three years. She said he was very generous, giving $10,000 to someone who lost all his money in Vegas and sending boxes of expensive new clothes to Indian reservations. But he had many demons, including alcohol, and she said the marriage was "the worst mistake of my life" even though they had "an incredible sex life." After endless fights and drama she said they divorced amicably in 1983 and he eventually turned his life around.

I remember some big donor solved all of Valerie Harper's caregiving needs at the end of her life. I wonder who it was. I think it might have been an anonymous Julie kavner at work.

by Anonymousreply 23November 12, 2022 2:56 AM

Well, R23, we know it wasn't Bette Midler.

by Anonymousreply 24November 12, 2022 3:01 AM

Well if she ponies up for Frederic, then she has to pony up for Ken.

by Anonymousreply 25November 12, 2022 3:05 AM

Ken?

by Anonymousreply 26November 12, 2022 3:06 AM

R23 Harper's husband mentioned two angels helping out. Speculation was that it was Mark Burnett and Roma Downey.

There was a gofundme for Dawn Wells and the organizer said she need extra money to get into one of the nursing homes affiliated with SAG. I think this was 2 or 3 years before she died.

Ernie Reyes Jr. who is a martial artist who acted in movies and TV shows had a GoFundMe years ago when he was undergoing dialysis and needed a kidney transplant.

by Anonymousreply 27November 12, 2022 3:18 AM

Fuck off, all of you! Bette donated $50 bucks.

by Anonymousreply 28November 12, 2022 3:23 AM

Anyone can qualify for Medicaid in-home care or nursing homes and the government pays for it, the trade off is they take all your assets when you die.

Johnny Depp should kick in some dough; they were on 21 Jump Street together

by Anonymousreply 32November 12, 2022 4:05 AM

I've given $50-100 to total strangers on GoFundMe. That's less than the equivalent of multi-multi-multi-millionaires giving $100k to people they;ve worked with who are in desperate need.

by Anonymousreply 33November 12, 2022 4:09 AM

Among the donors: Stacy Keach, Don Johnson and Frank Langella.

AND Carol Ann herself, Rutanya Alda.

by Anonymousreply 34November 12, 2022 4:11 AM

Elliot Gould is listed as an organizer.

Thinking perhaps he gave one of the larger donations, anonymously.

by Anonymousreply 35November 12, 2022 4:15 AM

OP’s link says Elliott Gould raised…$50?

by Anonymousreply 36November 12, 2022 4:21 AM

R36 those notations are talking about the donations of others.

I assume from that note that of all the people Elliot may have emailed about this fundraiser, so far one has contributed, and donated 50 bucks. His own donation would not count.

by Anonymousreply 37November 12, 2022 4:25 AM

R34 “Carol Ann’s” actor husband Richard Bright—who died in the street like a fucking dog, hit by a tour bus—was friends with Forest.

by Anonymousreply 41November 12, 2022 4:37 AM

Bette, you really should donate something! I did.

This is not a game. His situation is precarious. You know the money's gone.

by Anonymousreply 42November 12, 2022 4:38 AM

That was sort of the sarcastic point, r41.

by Anonymousreply 43November 12, 2022 4:38 AM

These celebrities are so fucking cheap. Imagine the good press if one of them topped it off.

by Anonymousreply 44November 12, 2022 4:39 AM

Maybe Midler believes the bullshit that she's doing just as much as donating money (if not more) by her using her star name advertising his plight.

by Anonymousreply 45November 12, 2022 4:41 AM

She'd be wrong. I looked at this hours ago when she first put it up and the amount has barely changed. Finish it off, Bette, FFS. It's barely what you spend a month on therapy bills for Sophie.

by Anonymousreply 46November 12, 2022 4:44 AM

Someone start a thread telling Bette to donate so she gets a Google alert

by Anonymousreply 47November 12, 2022 4:45 AM

Freakin' cheapskates. The GoFundMe was started TWO MONTHS AGO and they haven't even raised half the amount yet...

by Anonymousreply 48November 12, 2022 4:47 AM

Midler is one of the most privileged people on the planet. She's a disgrace for not closing this GoFundMe campaign with $ as soon as she heard about it. Yuck.

by Anonymousreply 49November 12, 2022 4:49 AM

What did he spend his money on ?

by Anonymousreply 50November 12, 2022 4:53 AM

by Anonymousreply 51November 12, 2022 4:54 AM

R50, are you saying he should be rich enough to afford round-the-clock caregiving, just because he was a movie actor?

by Anonymousreply 57November 12, 2022 5:05 AM

I'm sure he would qualify for the Actors Fund home in Woodland Hills. They get people who qualify on Medicaid and then work out the rest. He must have a small pension, plus SS plus Medicare and the union's health plan's Advantage program. I understand people want to remain in their homes, but that's not always possible.

by Anonymousreply 58November 12, 2022 5:41 AM

I'll chip in five bucks but only if he voted for ME. Both times. And I'm going to need a receipt so I can turn it into the IRS. Write off, you know. Midler is a nasty nasty woman, if you can call her that. Diddler Midler (as I like to call her) has a long reputation of being cheap and stingy, still I'd let her kind do my taxes if you know what I mean. And I'm sure you do. Be sure to donate (me, not him) and you'll be first to hear my HUGE announcement. You know you want to. Who was this wise guy again?

by Anonymousreply 59November 12, 2022 5:50 AM

Bette certainly has the resources to foot the bill for any caregiving he'd need for the rest of his life—it'd be a drop in the bucket for her, truly. I agree that it's kind of weird for her to be sharing this and asking people to donate. Maybe she offered in private and the family wouldn't take it, but who knows?

by Anonymousreply 60November 12, 2022 6:11 AM

What a strange thread.

People really are stupid.

1) She may have given money to help him. We don't know. It's not really any of our business. She used her power as a celebrity to spread the word.

2) She's under zero obligation to pay any of his medical bills. She's worked with thousands of people over the course of her career. Is she responsible for all of them?

3) Here's something worth bitching about...why we have a system in this country where people have to crowd fund to get adequate healthcare. That's the real thing to be horrified about and ashamed of.

by Anonymousreply 65November 12, 2022 7:12 AM

Movie Stars fir the most part are not billionaires. They make real money & are comfortable. But they don't have this endless pot of money the way Oprah or Spielberg does.

They're mostly upper upper middle class is how I see them, with a tone of money. But not endless $.

All the best to forrest!

[quote]Coleen Camp gave $1,000. They were in Apocalypse Now together.

They were also the hippie parents in Valley Girl.

by Anonymousreply 70November 12, 2022 10:09 AM

If he doesn’t qualify for any help under Medicare or insurance, how does anyone pay for care? I think R29 is correct, what he says is consistent with what we were told when my mother was dying.

I suspect that Forest has heirs that want to keep his estate intact (even if it’s small) and get other people to pay for the care. If it were just a matter of him being desperate to stay at home and wanting to decline funded institutional care, I’d be more sympathetic. So I don’t blame Midler for not taking care of it.

by Anonymousreply 71November 12, 2022 10:40 AM

It didn't say what kind of care he needs (part-time or round-the-clock care) but if someone needs round-the-clock care and can't afford it, he would be better off in a nursing home, especially if he's near the end of life.

In California 20 hours/week in-home care costs $2513.00/mo. If he requires 24/7 care the monthly cost would likely be north of $20 grand/month. I doubt a go-fund-me is going to raise that kind of money.

by Anonymousreply 72November 12, 2022 11:15 AM

[quote] [R34] “Carol Ann’s” actor husband Richard Bright—who died in the street like a fucking dog, hit by a tour bus—was friends with Forest.

Then she probably should have donated that whopping $25 anonymously? Just saying.

by Anonymousreply 73November 12, 2022 12:32 PM

"She may have given money to help him."

R65, the goal was a measly $60k. Yes, she should give all of that. No one here was saying she should pay for everyone she's ever worked with. But if she's making it a point to advertise his plight, then clearly he's unique to her heart or whatever, and she should do the decent thing and pony up what for her is absolutely nothing.

And yes, the American healthcare system is awful.

by Anonymousreply 74November 12, 2022 1:30 PM

R63, I agree that also makes Lahti look like a phony cunt. Best to say nothing at all on social media than just say "thoughts and prayers" especially if you have no intention of contributing to the person whose plight you're "so sorry" to hear about.

by Anonymousreply 75November 12, 2022 1:36 PM

[quote] If he requires 24/7 care the monthly cost would likely be north of $20 grand/month. I doubt a go-fund-me is going to raise that kind of money.

The GFM text says that the goal is intended to raise enough for 6-8 months of care.

Which makes me wonder if this is more of a hospice situation.

by Anonymousreply 76November 12, 2022 1:44 PM

Some points to clarify-

1- Forrest wants to be at home, and needs 24/7 care, which neither private insurance nor Medicare pays for.

2- He seems to be at the end stage of his life, which is why they are asking for $60K. That would fund 3 months of at home health care.

3- He has no children.

4- He absolutely would not get into the MPFT home in time enough. They have a large backlog.

5- Bette didn't offer any sort of monetary link in her tweet, so what was Lahti supposed to do? We only knew there was a GFM because one of us went and found it.

by Anonymousreply 77November 12, 2022 1:45 PM

R77, since Lahti was made aware, she could easily dig up that GFM for him. I'm aure she knows how to do a search.

by Anonymousreply 78November 12, 2022 1:47 PM

This thread is too depressing. All of the people who knew and worked with him.

by Anonymousreply 79November 12, 2022 1:49 PM

Obviously Bette midler realizes it would be selfish if she just paid all of his expenses and didn't allow the rest of us plebeians the opportunity to support him.

by Anonymousreply 80November 12, 2022 1:53 PM

R80, we're the wind beneath her wings, which are made of money.

by Anonymousreply 81November 12, 2022 1:54 PM

Someone tweeted the GFM link to Bette several hours before Lahti’s tweet.

In any case, her “mountains of TLC” is so Frau it’s worth our scorn alone.

by Anonymousreply 82November 12, 2022 1:55 PM

Totally agree, R82. Was Lahti cradling a mug when she uttered her sentiment?

by Anonymousreply 83November 12, 2022 1:57 PM

I’ll bet he introduced Marilu to anal.

by Anonymousreply 84November 12, 2022 2:01 PM

And she never looked back (so to speak), R84.

by Anonymousreply 85November 12, 2022 2:02 PM

R77, I feel like the GFM dances around that, instead of being upfront and presenting the way you do in (1). Which just makes it seem sketchy.

by Anonymousreply 86November 12, 2022 2:06 PM

It's hard to believe that someone who had a relatively successful acting career and made more money than most of us ever will, needs a gofundme.

I guess he never saved any money for something like this. No one stays healthy forever.

I do wish him well, though, and I'm sorry to hear he is in such poor health. I just don't understand where all that money went that he now needs to a gofundme to survive.

by Anonymousreply 87November 12, 2022 2:07 PM

I’m a cheap, selfish bastard who doesn’t know how GFM works. Can you donate a mere $1 as “Bette Midler”?

by Anonymousreply 88November 12, 2022 2:07 PM

He's a character actor who hasn't worked regularly since 2002. Why on earth would you think he has a lot of money?

by Anonymousreply 89November 12, 2022 2:08 PM

Why should it be her responsibility because we have the shitty healthcare…if you can even call it that, in the US

by Anonymousreply 90November 12, 2022 2:10 PM

R90, congratulations for missing the point completely.

by Anonymousreply 91November 12, 2022 2:11 PM

I recently saw him as one of the detectives in "The Deliberate Stranger" and thought that must've been quite a comedown. And that was almost 40 years ago. Thanks for posting this, just donated.

by Anonymousreply 92November 12, 2022 2:20 PM

[quote] It's hard to believe that someone who had a relatively successful acting career and made more money than most of us ever will, needs a gofundme.

I doubt he ever made "a lot of money."

He may have been paid well for a few of his larger films, but actors see about 20-30 percent of their total pay if they're lucky (after taxes, agent fees, etc.)

He also struggled with drugs and alcohol so I assume some of it went down his throat and/or up his nose.

But only a small percentage of actors make multi millions. There was something about Dianne Wiest not long ago - talented, busy actress, award winning, no addictions or issues, and she had either sold or was about to sell her home because her budget couldn't sustain it any more. I mean, Dianne fucking Wiest, folks.

by Anonymousreply 93November 12, 2022 2:23 PM

People think that they'll be healthy forever, never saving a little each month for when something like this happens and then they need to rely on the kindness of acquaintances and strangers to help them out financially.

Let this be a lesson to all us regular folk who never made the kind of money an actor makes and doesn't have the kind of co-workers who can drop $1000 -$5000 in a gofundme account for your end of life care.

by Anonymousreply 94November 12, 2022 2:41 PM

[quote] regular folk who never made the kind of money an actor makes

Someone has decided to dig in on a very erroneous assumption.

by Anonymousreply 95November 12, 2022 2:42 PM

No matter how much anyone squirrels away, R94, it will never be enough when it costs $10k-20k a month for a nursing home or caregivers. The system is the problem.

by Anonymousreply 96November 12, 2022 2:53 PM

Yeah, actors may sometimes pull down a nice buck when they’re working, but they have more weeks than not out of work.

by Anonymousreply 97November 12, 2022 3:00 PM

Once you deplete your assets, you get care. How hard is that to understand? He wants to choose a specific type of care - one on one, in-home care 24/7. That’s more than four full time, 40 hour salaries, hopefully for people who are paid a living wage and are able to get their OWN insurance.

by Anonymousreply 98November 12, 2022 3:08 PM

Depleting your assets is a hell of a way to get care. Yes, you have to let hem take all of your money (even your house) if you go into a nursing home. We all understand that, R98. Are you suggesting that's as it should be? The best the richest country in the world can scare up as a system for their sickest and oldest?

by Anonymousreply 99November 12, 2022 3:12 PM

Well, you can’t take it with you, so I don’t think it’s the worst system possible.

by Anonymousreply 100November 12, 2022 3:15 PM

No, R100, you can't take it with you, but you should be able to leave something to your family.

by Anonymousreply 101November 12, 2022 3:17 PM

It's a pretty shitty system in general, R100.

by Anonymousreply 102November 12, 2022 3:18 PM

[quote] The GFM text says that the goal is intended to raise enough for 6-8 months of care. Which makes me wonder if this is more of a hospice situation

No one expected to live 6-8 months would be accepted into hospice care. That kind of care is for people who are at the very edge of life.

by Anonymousreply 103November 12, 2022 3:27 PM

Was hospice care even mentioned in the GFM?

by Anonymousreply 104November 12, 2022 3:28 PM

It was not.

Which is why I said [quote] makes me wonder

by Anonymousreply 105November 12, 2022 3:32 PM

Most families of people who have to go on nursing home Medicaid plan far enough in advance so they can transfer all assets to someone else in the family. I have an old friend who died a year ago in hospice care after being in a nursing home for a few months. He had transferred everything, including the $800 thousand he'd received from the sale of large plot of land a few years before, to his son 2 years before when he became ill with cancer and was told he had no more than a year to live (which he beat by a year). His nursing home bill was $7200/mo. All the nursing home got from him was all but $50.00/mo of his monthly social security. Medicaid paid the rest. He was allowed to keep no more than $2000.00 in his checking account at any time to qualify for nursing home Medicaid.

[quote]3) Here's something worth bitching about...why we have a system in this country where people have to crowd fund to get adequate healthcare. That's the real thing to be horrified about and ashamed of.

Yep, it's a revolting problem, but clearly not to younger people! In this current election 73% of Gen Z, the majority of whom are likely still on daddy's health insurance, couldn't be bothered to show up and vote at all! I was hoping they'd vote in numbers to demand more change here.

This social media scold-monster David Hogg, the self-anointed political spokesman for the high school gun massacre in Florida is swanning around like a king maker, while Gen Z voter participation actually FELL from 2018, and his home state of Florida where the deaths took place wildly underperformed Dems nationwide! To conclude this is a real problem to younger people at least is not supported by numbers at all.

I got tired of reading the crazy posts about halfway through the thread, so maybe this has already been said. Bette Midler probably did give money, but not through the gofundme page. That page is for people who do not have the personal contact info of the guy. She does. There is no reason for her to use that page.

All the people calling her cheap for not giving are the cheap ones. They want someone else to contribute, so they don’t have to.

"We need to make sure Frederic has round-the-clock caregivers seven days a week."

Not to sound unkind but thousands of other Americans are in same position requiring similar needs. Many if not most worked hard all their lives and now find themselves near destitute and suffering from serious health issues.

Can understand people wanting to help one of their own, but many also should raise their voices loudly to force changes at federal and local government level to change things across board.

Spending down to qualify for Medicaid is not simple, in fact it's rather complicated and things vary by state.

Some states have rather favorable and generous terms (New York is one, surprise surprise), others are comparatively miserly.

Those contemplating such a move should seek out competent and experienced professional guidance.

by Anonymousreply 134November 13, 2022 12:37 AM

Even if sources are believed, Bette Midler only has a net worth of $250 million USD. That however in no way implies the woman has huge sums of money lying about spare in cash.

Net worth is total value of one's estate minus debts. Assets included in estate (aside from cash of course) are estimated values, they may or may not bring in sums given when sold. That poor bastard who ran FTX went to bed a multi billionaire and next day was flat broke taking many down that rabbit hole as well.

Better Midler is nearly 80, and it's highly likely much of her (and husband's since we're talking about a marital estate), assets have been arranged to suit rest of their lives and whatever provisions have been made for their daughter.

Could Ms. Midler peel off one million or so in aid of Frederic Forrest? Probably, but as others have noted why should or would she? The moral hazard of going down that route would leave her open to any and everyone the woman worked with professionally looking for a soft touch.

R135 I highly doubt if Bette Middle is worth $250MM that she has a 100% illiquid asset concentration in her portfolio. To compare her to the FTX dude is a poor analogy. She likely earns in interest the $60k Frederic needs while she is sleeping.

by Anonymousreply 138November 13, 2022 1:11 AM

"Or, she could discreetly pay his expenses without breathing a word to anyone about anything."

Well yes, Ms. Midler or anyone else could do that, but there are tax consequences either way.

Giving money to a charity counts as a tax deduction with generous limits. OTOH simply giving money to an individual counts under purposes of gift tax, which though currently rather generous does have limits.

Dianne who?

For gawd's sake, she lived in a high-end apartment and got press coverage when she wasn't finding roles. Within months she had a recurring role for the next four years on a television series. And has done films during this period as well.

All this despite the fact she hadn't been in a hit film in 25-30 years.

Hunty, no one thinks she's capable at this point of "the moral hazard" of being even remotely generous of parting with a mere $60,000. And she's hardly in danger of looking like a soft touch.

So what happened to all the money he made as an actor? He has no health insurance? He's penniless?

by Anonymousreply 150November 13, 2022 5:11 AM

Few to nil health insurance plans will pay for in home long term care.

There is or was Long Term Care insurance, but that market has changed over years. Companies soon realized policies written were going to take them to cleaners, so they cut back offerings, canceled plans, etc... What LTC plans that do exist often cost plenty for what coverage they do provide. Hence so many seeking to pay down assets and get Medicaid.

Frederic Forrest likely isn't destitute, at least have not seen anything saying as much. Rather like so many other Americans he cannot afford to self pay for long term/end of life care. This especially since apparently it seems Mr. Forrest wishes to live out his days at home and not in some sort of institution or facility.

[quote] I love The Rose. Great movie. I love the scene where Bette's character follows Frederic who is trying to hide in a gay male bathhouse.

That movie was so ridiculous. IT was loosely based on Janis Joplin. The very semitic looking Bette Midler, with her brassy Broadway voice, playing a Texas blues/rock singer? It was laughable. Her version of "When A Man Loves A Woman", which was released as a single, was awful. Forrest was good in the movie, though. So was Harry Dean Stanton, who played a small role as a country music singer who tells the boozy, druggie, slutty Rose he doesn't want her to do cover versions of his songs anymore.

by Anonymousreply 207November 14, 2022 3:09 AM

Unless Frederic Forrest has or had major money (we're talking excess of five or so millions), long term health issues can deplete even most solid finances.

If FF has been ill for long period of time, in and out of hospital and so forth that costs money. Insurance does not pay for everything 100%, there are out of pocket costs that must be paid somehow.

FF hasn't worked in the business since 2006. Much of his career from 1980's through 2000's was as a jobbing actor, good amount of television and some film work. Thus FF likely made a decent enough living for an actor, but we're not talking about Tom Cruise or Dwayne Johnson sort of wealth.

Those destitute enough to receive Medicaid in most states often qualify for 24/7 care if only a home help aide. This of course would vary by diagnoses and other factors.

Lucie Arnaz donating a mere $100.00 to Valerie Harper’s GFM was embarrassing.

They had a bit of a connection. Valerie was in the Broadway chorus of Wildcat with her mother and Lucy presented Valerie with her first Emmy Award.

Valerie always spoke highly of Lucy and participated in her Kennedy Center Honors segment in 1986.

[quote]Unfortunately, he doesn't qualify for any financial support from insurance or the government for this kind of care, so it's up to us, his friends, to make sure he has the care he needs in his home.

Well, it seems the people looking into getting this actor the help he needs, seem clueless.

Many wealthy and middle class people are actually eligible for at home care which is covered by Medicaid. Wealthy and middle class people can, and do, legally move their money and other assets (most wealthy people and middle class people usually own a home, a co-op or a condo) into a trust and then are easily eligible for managed at-home care.

A relative, a millionaire, has been in one these programs for about 3 years. These programs cover the home aides care and any needed supples. When I see these GoFund me pages for people who need this level of care, it seems the family and even friends of these people do not know how to navigate government help when it comes to medical issues.

In fact, when my father was briefly in a nursing home for re-hab after surgery, one of his roommates was a man who owned four apartment buildings and his own home, the man simply transferred all his assets into a trust for his three children. This man was on full Medicaid.

In fact, you don't even have to be on full Medicaid to get at-home care. If you are retired and was able to carry on your health insurance and have Medicare, Medicaid, will cover the at home program. You other insurance plans usually cover the rest, again, it depends on your plans.

If a person's SS and pension are over the ceiling monthly amount allowed for this type of care, they might have a small amount to pay for the care, say around $500 a month. This is much less than paying $4000-$5000 a WEEK and that's just for the home aides, especially if the person needs 24/7 care. At homeland term care sure beats being in a disgusting nursing home.

Eligibility for these Medicaid covered programs also depends on what state the person needing the care lives in. Many red states have not expanded Medicaid.

by Anonymousreply 243November 17, 2022 3:32 PM

At home long term care sure beats being in a disgusting nursing home.

by Anonymousreply 244November 17, 2022 3:37 PM

At home 24/7 care will certainly be much more costly than $60,000. Does Frederic need 24 hour round the clock care?

The GoFund me page doesn't explain what the target amount is supposed to cover.

This link was posted above, but am doing so again speaking to your thread.

Yes, spending down to qualify for Medicaid is possible for even those well off, but has to be done correctly.

Also states are given leeway in how such spending down rolls. If things aren't done correctly in either case state can come after heirs to recoup funds spent on Medicaid.

Seems those Medicaid reimbursement laws sure don't apply in NY state, especially for a Medicaid recipient's relative who inherits less than one million. Most of these people who put their money and assets into trusts need to hire an eldercare lawyer who helps them navigate the system. Believe me, wealthy peoples families are not reimbursing Medicaid. At least not in NY state.

The only fee a person would have to pay is they have monthly surplus. In NY state, a Medicaid recipient who has at-home care covered by Medicaid, cannot bring in more than $900 month. For a fee of about $50 a month, you must join a pooled trust. The Medicaid recipient, or their relative, will tell the pooled trust what bills they want the trust to pay. The pooled trust then takes the amount out of the person's checking account to pay the specific bill or bills. The pooled trust has nothing to do with setting up a trust which contains the person's assets, the pooled trust is completely a separate situation. This a lot to navigate and if the elderly ill person doesn't have a family member to help, things get dicey.

Do you realize how many people are on Medicaid in NYC? Not just the elderly in nursing homes and those receiving at-home care. Many of these New Yorkers on Medicaid work off the books and are walking around with $300 sneakers. Don't get me started.

One of my relative's home aides is on Medicaid herself! Not sure how she manages this, as she gets paid $20 an hour., she earns around $1000 a week, way over the ceiling amount for Medicaid coverage. I have to wonder, is the home aide agency paying this aide half on the books, half off? Lots of these home aide agencies are extremely corrupt and shady, for instance, homes aides are not allowed to work more than 40 hours week, this aide works over 40 hours. Most of the home aide salaries are covered by Medicaid. These agencies depend on Medicaid to survive.

This aide, with overtime, actually makes over $50,000 a year, has an expensive iPhone, has a few LV bags and well, she should not be getting Medicaid and food stamps, but she does.

by Anonymousreply 251November 17, 2022 5:20 PM

[quote]Yes, spending down to qualify for Medicaid is possible for even those well off, but has to be done correctly.

What I posted has nothing to do with spending down one's assets. I do know, there is now a longer look-back period for ill people who need permanent nursing home stays. It's now about 5 years. look-back on all assets. For at-home care, there was formerly only a one month look-back for at-home care programs. Not sure what is now.

Covid sure changed Medicaid laws, especially in NY state. Medicaid laws in NY became more lenient. For example, people on Medicaid, who only have Medicaid for their health insurance and are not in any kind of nursing facility or have at-home care, were automatically reinstated and didn't have to fill out their yearly renewal forms.

Personally, I don't know one person, who inherited a relative's estate, that had to reimburse Medicaid for their late relative's care.

Also, since most healthcare plans only cover up to100 days for nursing home care, smost nursing homes apply for Emergency Medicaid for their patients. These patients obviously weren't smart enough to move their assets before they needed this level of care. The nursing home social workers step in to apply for Medicaid for their patients who need to remain in these nursing homes.

Those linked Medicaid articles do not seem to apply to NY state residents.

Bezo is still a douchebag. Bezos calls his workers "lazy", doesn't allow them enough bathroom breaks, doesn't want a union, basically, he's an all around creep.

So glad Amazon was driven out of Long Island City, Queens NY. Bezos lied about "helping the community". He initially Bezos claimed he'd be offering engineer jobs "starting at $150,000" to working class members of the LIC community, he then backtracked saying he couldn't guarantee that Amazon would train young people from the surrounding projects.

Take, take, take, make more billions, accept tax abatements, instead of helping the areas of where he wants to plan his next "fulfillment center".

Of course, Bezos wanted that $45 million NYC tax abatement! Meanwhile, working stiffs property taxes go up every year in NY state.

Mr. Wonky Eyes also "needed" a helicopter port on his LIC Amazon building. Fuck that guy. I despise Amazon. Talk about ruining small businesses as well as long established businesses.

They may not give to causes that benefit charities of your choice, but wealthy do donate a bulk of such funds including setting up foundations and trusts.

This begging for money doesn't make sense. Doesn't he still have his SAG-AFTRA membership? If so, as long as he paid his yearly dues, wouldn't he still have health insurance?

I do realize health insurance doesn't cover home aides which he apparently needs. Health insurance only covers home health care for 20-30 days after surgery.

by Anonymousreply 300December 6, 2022 11:40 AM

We've done this several times in thread; more to point your second paragraph answers first.

None of know what sort of health insurance (if any) Frederic Forrest has and or state of his finances. All GFM page makes clear is the man is mortally ill and *choses* to live out his days at home. One or more of FF's friends are attempting to make that wish possible.

Florida does have a robust hospice care system, but apparently that doesn't interest Mr. Forrest either.

[quote]Doesn't he still have his SAG-AFTRA membership?

Why would he? He hasn't had any credits in decades. Kim Cattrall said she lost her SAG-AFTRA insurance after not working for about a year. Forrest hasn't had enough SAG-AFTRA credits for insurance since 2002.

by Anonymousreply 302December 7, 2022 10:00 AM

by Anonymousreply 303December 7, 2022 10:38 AM

SAG-Aftra does offer health insurance.

Years ago, a friend joined because he was hired to be in a few TV commercials. A friend scouted him due to his looks and personality. My friend was not an actor, he was a fashion illustrator. He kept up his SAG-Aftra dues in order to keep his health insurance. After he secured a staff job as an illustrator, he stopped paying his SAG-AFTRA dues. He had decent health insurance through his job, he knew he had no desire to act, so he dropped his membership.

Here's info on SAG-Aftra health plans.

Let me get this straight, because Forrest wants to deal with his illness on his own terms, he's begging strangers for money? Surely all these rich celebrities can cough up whatever cash he needs? These wealthy celebrities could easily give him $500,000 and it wouldn't make a dent in any of their assets. Elon Musk can give him a million.

Asking non-wealthy people for help is ridiculous. Workers in the US have their own healthcare needs to deal with.

by Anonymousreply 307December 8, 2022 4:32 AM

R305

It isn't clear FF asked anyone to do anything. Helen, Barry and Elliot acted on their own it seems on behalf of their "friend" Frederic Forrest.

As stated many times in this thread we none of us know entire backstory.

In many cases a hospital will not discharge someone who is ill (especially terminally) who cannot live on their own. Nurses, social workers and physicians will make that call. If someone cannot be sent home most likely two options are being sent to a skilled nursing/rehab facility or kept in hospital (long term border).

Mr. Forrest is unmarried and childless. Without family or friends willing to provide 24/7 care he needs to live out his days at home, it likely won't happen unless people are hired. Hence the GFM page.

R304

Whether or not SAG/AFTRA offers health insurance wasn't the question, we all know it does. In regard to FF query was does the man still qualify for benefits having not worked since 2008 (film "All The King's Men").

At age 85, Mr. Forrest would likely fall under "Retirees (Including Senior Performers". See link provided in your post on how that works.

Like nearly everything else involving healthcare benefits it isn't very straightforward, but much of it comes down to whether or not said senior/retiree has enough qualifying Eligibility Threshold (currently $25,950) in Covered Earnings during their Base Earnings Period.

As others have stated in this thread SAG/AFTRA benefits are largely tied to amount of work a performer does within a given period. No work and if that goes on long enough, no or low benefits.

Recent Covid pandemic and various federal/local laws regarding vaccinations have put performers out of work. If vaccination is required to work on a production and performer doesn't want or have, they cannot work. No work - no bennies.

I remember Fereric Forrest from "The Rose. He was good in that; he always seemed to me to be a competent, if ordinary, actor. His career never really took off, though he and Teri Garr starred in a bloated production by Fances Ford Coppola called "One From The Heart." They played an unappealing couple named Hank and Frannie and the movie is about their failng relatitionship and aimless lives. Coppola was gvien free rein to do what he wanted and he raised the budget from $15 million to $23 million. As a result the movie is very "stylized" but has no depth or substance. The movie was originally supposed to be a romcom, but what the hell did Coppola know about romcoms, so it became a more "ambitious" project. Anyway, the movie was a colossal critical and financial flop. and it did absoulutely nothing for the careers of Forrest and Teri Garr. They wer miscast anyway; both of them were much better supporting players than leads.

GFM is racket. It ought to be shut down, policed or something.

R332, in what way is GFM a "racket"? Seems you should be blaming those racketeers who set up GFM campaigns for various nefarious reasons, like Georgie Santos.

Can you take money out of GoFundMe Before goal is reached?

Even if you don't reach your goal, you can withdraw every cent, minus the transaction fees. This is unlike other donation platforms that take an all-or-nothing approach, meaning you can only receive the donations if you reach your target.

I hate GoFundMe. Remember the sob story about the homeless man who gave a couple his last $20 so they could buy gas? It netted over $400,000, ostensibly for the dear homeless man. But it was a rackett; ; the couple and the supposedly homeless man made the whole thing up. I woould never give a dime to any GoFundMe account. But there are always stupid people willing to give their money away.

I’ve forgotten what this thread is about.

Good lawd, is this still going on?

End the thing and just give Mr. Forrest the $50k and be done with things. Dragging it out for drips and drabs donations is just too bad.

SEVEN months later and they still haven't reached the goal.

The $$$ they spend looking for me can go to this Forrest chap.

Someone finally made another substantial donation ($6000). Total is $56,670 raised of $60,000 goal.

For love of God let's hope the remaining $3,300 quickly and end this sad charity drive.

What's the movie where he was playing someone "slow" and he went to pay for something with a large bill. The cashier asked him if he had anything smaller. He took his cash out of his wallet and laid the bills next to each other and replied "No, they are all the same size."

I'm going to hell for laughing at that scene.
