Questions about Beto's future viability

You know I love him but he's now lost 3 races. I'm not sure we should keep pouring money into his campaigns if he can't win.

by Anonymousreply 182November 17, 2022 6:23 PM

I cannot imagine he’ll ever run for anything again. He never should’ve left the House. I would have thought he’d go much further — I supported his presidential campaign in 2019 or 2018 or whenever he started it — but I guess Texas is too stupid for him, and his lack of experience (?) is really a deal breaker for people nationwide. Or something.

by Anonymousreply 1November 9, 2022 7:53 PM

Beto's toast, he is over& he knows it too.

Keep all the millions of campaign monies, he can pretend to run again.

Stacy Abrams is done too (been running for Governor for 4 yrs against Kemp). It's over for her too.

by Anonymousreply 2November 9, 2022 7:54 PM

Beto lost Texas by a larger margin than Hillary and Biden who didn't bother campaigning there.

It says more about shithhole Texans who don't really turn out to vote ever. I hope they outlaw abortion right away and they can all freeze to death when the electric grid collapses again.

I assume most of the few young people who bothered to vote voted GOP. FUCK 'EM!

by Anonymousreply 3November 9, 2022 8:10 PM

But, I thought he was "born for this". Arrogant straight white male is not a good look...ever.

by Anonymousreply 4November 9, 2022 8:15 PM

Time to cut shithole Florida, Texas, and Ohio loose, they are a lost cause.

And there is always an OnlyFans for everyone.

by Anonymousreply 5November 9, 2022 8:16 PM

But he has BDE! He should get what he wants just because of that.

by Anonymousreply 6November 9, 2022 8:17 PM

Democrats need to start campaigning on issues and not cultural values.

by Anonymousreply 7November 9, 2022 8:17 PM

Yeah, I’m a huge fan of Beto, but I can’t see him running again for statewide office in Texas. If he served in the Cabinet for a few years and moved — the way Hillary did — to another more favorable state he would likely have a much better chance of getting elected.

Same thing with Stacy. She was likely quite correct that Kemp engaged in shady, underhanded, and nefarious activities when he oversaw his own election four years ago. But that grievance — accurate though it may have been — was not enough to unseat a relatively popular (or at least not scandal-ridden) governor.

by Anonymousreply 8November 9, 2022 8:18 PM

[quote]If he served in the Cabinet for a few years

As what? Secretary of Cheerleading and Losing?

by Anonymousreply 9November 9, 2022 8:20 PM

Also, his supporters are horrifying and off-putting. Democrats need to ban gore and ghoulish melodrama from all future campaigns.

by Anonymousreply 10November 9, 2022 8:21 PM

R8 The solution to that issue is to advocate for tighter security in elections, which she has never done.

by Anonymousreply 11November 9, 2022 8:22 PM

Texas became majority Latino last year. It will take another 10 years for the Baby Boomers to start dying off, but once they do, the Gen Z & X Latinos will take over in the state. They are majority Democrat. It will take a charismatic Latino to finally end the Republican reign in Texas.

by Anonymousreply 12November 9, 2022 8:22 PM

I meant millennials, not Gen X.

by Anonymousreply 13November 9, 2022 8:23 PM

^How are we back to spewing that after the past few years?

Also, sooner or later Dems are going to realize that openly spewing prejudice against white people and eagerly anticipating their deaths looks bad.

by Anonymousreply 14November 9, 2022 8:26 PM

Beto's needs to move to Southern California where all the wealthy bottoms will make sure he rightfully wins as Senator.

Come to California Beto! Our holes will be prelubed to welcome you !!!!

by Anonymousreply 15November 9, 2022 8:26 PM

Beto*

by Anonymousreply 16November 9, 2022 8:27 PM

[quote]Democrats need to start campaigning on issues and not cultural values.

Did you not notice that Beto was an "all issues all the time" campaign?

Texans like guns, death and misery, and they've found all of that in Greg Abbott!

by Anonymousreply 17November 9, 2022 8:27 PM

I'd support his OnlyFans.

by Anonymousreply 18November 9, 2022 8:29 PM

Beto can't win in Texas unless he goes back to the House for one of the districts on the Mexican border.

Charlie Crist is another one that should stop running .

by Anonymousreply 19November 9, 2022 8:29 PM

Beto needs to run a non-profit or an organization that raises money for Democrats

Stacy needs to run a voting rights group

In both cases, the fact that they had a national following made them less viable at home as people thought this was just a stepping stone for a national career.

by Anonymousreply 20November 9, 2022 8:29 PM

I think if Beto ever got into the Senate, he'd be wishy-washy and work with Repugs too much. He seems like a big talker who caves when push comes to shove. Dummy should have stayed in the House for a few more terms but he was too special for something as simple as that.

by Anonymousreply 21November 9, 2022 8:29 PM

R3 You're actually fairly accurate about that. Texas is the capital of the conservative youth subculture. I'd guess about half of young people here are at least moderate Republicans. I'm including Tejanos and Hispanic in that, by the way.

Think Black Rifle Coffee, gun YouTubers, Steven Crowder, Joe Rogan, Elon Musk, the Babylon Bee, etc.

by Anonymousreply 22November 9, 2022 8:30 PM

R17 His campaign was holier-than-thou snottiness mixed with disturbing, creepy gore.

by Anonymousreply 23November 9, 2022 8:31 PM

I’ve stated before how incredibly foolish it is to donate to candidates who can’t possibly win. There was never, ever, at any point, even a remote possibility that Beto could actually win. On the other hand, people that are that stupid to hand him money to burn are like someone who would trade a cow for a handful of magic beans and who would only waste the money on something else if not on this.

There were plenty of real tossup races that people could have donated to instead.

by Anonymousreply 24November 9, 2022 8:31 PM

[quote]Texas became majority Latino last year.

Latinos in Texas are the most hardcore non-voters in America.

Nothing has ever gotten them to participate in elections. Screw 'em.

by Anonymousreply 25November 9, 2022 8:31 PM

Democrats should just write off Texas, Florida, and Ohio, and stop wasting money on statewide races in those states. Focus instead on races that are actually winnable.

by Anonymousreply 26November 9, 2022 8:31 PM

R17 I guess you could say he chose a Pentecostal fire and brimstone style of campaigning, where the wages of sin are death.

Didn't go over well!

by Anonymousreply 27November 9, 2022 8:33 PM

Stacy should run the DNC

by Anonymousreply 28November 9, 2022 8:33 PM

[QUOTE] Texas became majority Latino last year. It will take another 10 years for the Baby Boomers to start dying off, but once they do, the Gen Z & X Latinos will take over in the state. They are majority Democrat. It will take a charismatic Latino to finally end the Republican reign in Texas.

Well they said that about Florida too and Desantis just won Dade County. 70% Hispanic.

by Anonymousreply 29November 9, 2022 8:34 PM

[quote] I’ve stated before how incredibly foolish it is to donate to candidates who can’t possibly win.

Thank you R24!!

I have posted about that too on DL and many Eldergays don't seem to get it.

MTG's opponent raised $15MM - more than any challenger in the country--and she still won with over 70% of the vote.

by Anonymousreply 30November 9, 2022 8:38 PM

R30 Her race was called in under a minute after the polls closed.

by Anonymousreply 31November 9, 2022 8:41 PM

Here in Texas, we got hundreds of millions of dollars of GOP attack ads against Beto, Mike Collier and the AG nominee every 5 minutes on TV. Just blatant lies: lie after lie after lie. Collier at least tried to sue to stop the ads but naturally you can libel anybody you want in this country as long as you're a Republican.

The border was never an issue here till Trump made it one. But Biden and Mayorkas have been totally incompetent about managing it. The massive influx of Haitians 6 months ago - not fleeing Haiti but moving on from Brazil where the economy was in the shitter - always looked coordinated to me. Bigwigs from the Texas GOP met with Bolsanaro a couple of months before a sudden wave of Haitians arrived in Del Rio - not a usual crossing point. Then the massive influx of Venezuelans. Problem is in Texas, we're used to Mexicans crossing the border - they've been doing it for 200 years. But Haitians and Venezuelans? WTF? I suspect the Venezuelan influx is also inspired and funded by the GOP Dirty Tricks squad. If Venezuelans are fleeing their country out of fear, why didn't they stop in Colombia, in Panama, in any Central American country they crossed through? At least they could speak the language.

Beto ran a positive campaign - another goodie-two-shoes Dem while fighting against fascist thugs. Truly, there is no hope for Texas. The massive arrival of people from California always scared me shitless: the ones I met in Austin were rightwingers from Orange County or techie autistics from Silicon Valley.

by Anonymousreply 32November 9, 2022 8:42 PM

R26 Democrats didn't give Tim Ryan a dime. They invested millions in Fetterman. The DNC is run by cronies and they hated Tim Ryan. Jaime Harrison is an idiot.

by Anonymousreply 33November 9, 2022 8:47 PM

Beto, Stacy and Charlie Crist are opening up a Waffle House soon.

Is Ron DeSantis the only person to beat two closet-cases back to back?

by Anonymousreply 34November 9, 2022 8:49 PM

R32

[Quote]The border was never an issue here till Trump made it one. But Biden and Mayorkas have been totally incompetent about managing it.

Bush campaigned on it in the 90s, and when he was running for president both times. Remember the "a day without a Mexican" protests?

by Anonymousreply 35November 9, 2022 8:51 PM

The real crime was Cheri Beasley.

She could have beaten Todd with more money

by Anonymousreply 36November 9, 2022 8:51 PM

R25 true - Tejanos are the people in Texas who don't vote. Beto still won the ones who bothered to vote easily, but the majority don't bother. And it isn't a Great Tejano hero who's gonna win either. Tejanos are used to Tejanos who get elected using their office to enrich themselves and their families (Henry Cisneros. Cuellar, Reyes, etc.) so there's no Great Latino Hope in the wings.

by Anonymousreply 37November 9, 2022 8:52 PM

R32

[Quote]Beto ran a positive campaign - another goodie-two-shoes Dem while fighting against fascist thugs.

I kept seeing billboards about children being murdered and cartoons of little girls having their uteruses ripped out. Our local Democrats' slogan was "You better vote Democrat." Wtf.

by Anonymousreply 38November 9, 2022 8:54 PM

R35 both Dubya and Rick Perry were pro-immigration when they were Governors. They enacted in-state tuition for illegal immigrant students in Texas. Dubya tried to enact immigration reform during his Presidency but bitching about the border is too important an issue for the GOP to exploit.

by Anonymousreply 39November 9, 2022 8:55 PM

R38 you don't live in Texas obviously. Election's over you can go back to sucking Elon Musk's dick on Twitter.

by Anonymousreply 40November 9, 2022 8:56 PM

Beto still has staying power........!!!

by Anonymousreply 41November 9, 2022 8:57 PM

R40 Umm... I do? You never saw those billboards?

by Anonymousreply 42November 9, 2022 8:59 PM

And delusional Democrat strategists are still deluding themselves with those illusive Latino votes? Latinos will always end up voting for the Repugs. Can't you understand their mindset?

by Anonymousreply 43November 9, 2022 9:00 PM

There are also questions about Stacey Abrams' future viability. Yet one more defeat. She has worn out coasting along on the Race Card.

by Anonymousreply 44November 9, 2022 9:00 PM

R39 they were exchanging those things for tighter immigration controls. Dubya campaigned on the border, which is an absolute shithole of a mess and has been for twenty years.

by Anonymousreply 45November 9, 2022 9:01 PM

R44 She seems to be better suited to party organization.

by Anonymousreply 46November 9, 2022 9:27 PM

I always thought Beto was either naieve or shady because of this photo. Probably the latter. But he's still a zillion times better than Governor Hot Wheels.

by Anonymousreply 48November 9, 2022 9:33 PM

You'll be thrilled to hear that it's a seemingly impossible mix of both.

by Anonymousreply 49November 9, 2022 9:33 PM

Beto is a loser.

He needs to go be a realtor or car dealer.

by Anonymousreply 50November 9, 2022 9:34 PM

R42 no, you must have dreamed that while sucking Elon Musk's dick. One good thing: the nutjob QAnon Mexican woman who won a House seat in the Valley after a retirement, lost to a Dem.

Immigration is totally fucked. People who can sneak in, can sit around for 4 years waiting for their asylum case to come up to a hearing. Which is ridiculous. They can't work (though of course they do, providing necessary labor for bosses willing to turn a blind eye). Meanwhile try applying to immigrate from Europe. A former colleague is married to a Brit. They've been married for 30 years and decided to retire to the US though he'd never lived here. Took them 18 months to get Green Card approval. Also cost them $10,000. There is NO path for poor people to immigrate. There is no right of abode for the spouses of US citizens to move here. It's totally fucked up.

by Anonymousreply 51November 9, 2022 9:34 PM

You can't holler for a 50-state solution and then flip and demand people don't donate to candidates with longer odds!

Hillary is STILL being roasted for not running in areas where she wasn't going to win!

I say support ANY candidate you believe in and work like hell, or at very least keep these filthy GOP assholes on their toes.

I can tell you the numbers will tell us next week that the vast majority of 18-30s stayed home and that 40% of women voted GOP. You can't win like that.

by Anonymousreply 52November 9, 2022 9:36 PM

I can only speak as a Texas Democrat. The DNC refuses to give any support to a Texas Dem. They use us as their ATM. And it's all cronies. Jaime Harrison fundraised more than any Democrat in history and lost by double digits. So naturally he gets appointed head of the DNC. The moron Hinojosa who once again got reelected head of the Texas Dem Party despite the fact he's done jack shit to ever get a Dem elected, too busy getting jobs for his daughters with the DNC.

by Anonymousreply 53November 9, 2022 9:40 PM

The big money is in running for office not being elected to it. Who in the hell wants to be a public servant for little money when you can raise $50 million campaigning?

by Anonymousreply 54November 9, 2022 9:41 PM

Having lived in Europe for years, the amount of money wasted on political campaigns is obscene. It should all be illegal. TV stations in Europe can't carry ads for politicians. They can't carry ads for pharmaceuticals either. American TV stations and their greed is what has destroyed this country.

by Anonymousreply 55November 9, 2022 9:43 PM

R51 I'm assuming you must live in Austin. Those billboards were all up and down 35 and 75.

by Anonymousreply 56November 9, 2022 9:45 PM

[quote] The big money is in running for office not being elected to it. Who in the hell wants to be a public servant for little money when you can raise $50 million campaigning?

What are you talking about? Politicians can’t use that money for personal expenses.

[quote] Candidates are not allowed to use any remaining funds for personal use after all campaign-related debts are settled. Personal use is defined as “a commitment, obligation or expense of any person that would exist irrespective of the candidate’s campaign or responsibilities as a federal officeholder.”

by Anonymousreply 61November 9, 2022 10:09 PM

R59 How beautiful do you think Abbot and Ted Cruz are?

by Anonymousreply 62November 9, 2022 10:44 PM

No one could figure out "what he was" based on his name. It shouldn't matter, but it might.

by Anonymousreply 63November 9, 2022 10:52 PM

R63 Democrats were trying to court Hispanics and whites of Irish descent (ethnic majority in Texas) at the same time. Also trying to capitalize on nostalgia for the Kennedys, back when the party felt more welcoming and hopeful.

Ted Cruz is half Hispanic, half Irish-American.

by Anonymousreply 64November 9, 2022 10:56 PM

R47 Beto, Schock the Downton Abbey Admirer, Tulsi were all together in the freshman Dem class. Also in it were Eric Swalwell, Sean Patrick Maloney, Seth Moulton, Tim Ryan.

by Anonymousreply 65November 9, 2022 11:02 PM

Abbott's 10 million TV ads were either lies about Beto or Poor Crippled Greg! He's in a wheelchair! Pathetic.

by Anonymousreply 66November 9, 2022 11:05 PM

Boris thread.

by Anonymousreply 67November 9, 2022 11:15 PM

It was his many moles that done him in.

by Anonymousreply 68November 10, 2022 5:17 AM

Forget it, Jake. It’s Texas.

by Anonymousreply 69November 10, 2022 5:27 AM

It's clear that there haven't been enough transplants to Texas for an anti-gun Democrat who makes being anti-gun the primary focus of his campaign to win statewide office. I have no idea why Beto and his supporters were so delusional to think he could win, especially after he failed to win against Ted Cruz of all people.

He should have made way for a moderate, pro-gun (or at least gun-neutral) Democrat. A candidate like that would have had a real possibility to win against Abbott.

by Anonymousreply 70November 10, 2022 6:53 AM

Meh. I like Beto and I find his politics more interesting than most candidates.

I'm always happy to make a substantial donation to whatever he wants to do and I will continue to do that. It would be great if he won but I don't have that as a requirement. It's my money, I like spending it, what's it to you?

by Anonymousreply 71November 10, 2022 7:05 AM

Now that he will stop running for election, he can use his real name instead of "Beto."

by Anonymousreply 72November 10, 2022 7:17 AM

Oh, and you're not going to win Texas being a gun control advocate. They love their guns in Texas.

by Anonymousreply 73November 10, 2022 7:19 AM

It was clear from the day he announced, that Beto had ZERO chance of winning this election. Progressive Democrats are a fantasy-based breed, and the Beto fantasy factor just lingers and lingers.

by Anonymousreply 74November 10, 2022 7:24 AM

I can't understand why he ran again in the first place. And worse, why anyone supported or voted for him after his last disastrous, embarrassing run...

And yeah, 'Beto' is Irish-American.

by Anonymousreply 76November 10, 2022 8:55 AM

He should’ve run against Cornyn for Senate when he had a chance. He shot his wad with this race it appears.

by Anonymousreply 77November 10, 2022 9:25 AM

Abrams has a big future if she can deliver Warnock again like she did two years ago, especially if she swallows her loss and quickly gets to work. She can’t win her own elections unless she carpet bags, but she does know how to win others. Give her the DNC.

I don’t know what happens to Beto.

by Anonymousreply 78November 10, 2022 10:51 AM

The last time they "gave" the DNC to someone -- Deb Wasserman Schultz -- it was a disaster.

The DNC should never just be handed to some person as a political spoil.

by Anonymousreply 79November 10, 2022 4:27 PM

I do think Abrams has great on-the-ground and behind the scenes organizational capabilities though. Whether that qualifies her for DNC chair, I don't know. But, her talents shouldn't be wasted.

by Anonymousreply 80November 10, 2022 4:43 PM

I think she's a corrupt hack who's great political talent is organizing fraud with absentee ballots.

So Abrams is perfect for DNC chair 👍

by Anonymousreply 81November 10, 2022 4:56 PM

by Anonymousreply 82November 10, 2022 5:00 PM

Beto ran a phenomenal campaign will little national support. He lost by a few hundred thousand votes, yes, but I think his campaign and passion after Uvalde should be highly respected. Texans just suck and are stupid and dumb.

by Anonymousreply 83November 10, 2022 5:00 PM

They are both bright and idealistic and that's good. They're young and they have name rec. They should take five years and really do something and go quiet. They need track records beyond what they've got, obviously.

R83 He's an international celebrity who had endorsements from Harry Styles and Katy Perry. He had a war chest of $80 million. Austin isn't Texas, it's an enclave with a unique culture that doesn't translate outside of Travis County.

I think he was ghoulish and crass with how he tried to capitalize on Uvalde. He seriously offended the parents of the children killed, and personally grossed me out. His gun control policies are widely unpopular in the state, and he seemed unaware of what most people in Texas think causes mass shootings and what would prevent them.

by Anonymousreply 87November 10, 2022 5:12 PM

by Anonymousreply 88November 10, 2022 5:13 PM

by Anonymousreply 89November 10, 2022 5:14 PM

by Anonymousreply 90November 10, 2022 5:18 PM

Biden can — and should — appoint Beto to something.

Like a border-interest officer, who would have some jurisdiction over the release of the BORTAC records pertaining to Uvalde.....

Beto knows Texas better than ANY other democrat.

Beto did an EXCELLENT job campaigning.

Especially at Texas colleges — who did turn out to vote.

by Anonymousreply 91November 10, 2022 5:34 PM

Harris County and Fort Bend County (Houston), Bexar (San Antonio), Travis (Austin), El Paso County, the majority of counties in the Rio Grande Valley and Dallas County all voted massively Democratic. They need to secede from Texas and let Abbott run fucking Midland, the Panhandle and the Piney Woods.

by Anonymousreply 92November 10, 2022 6:46 PM

by Anonymousreply 98November 10, 2022 8:44 PM

I think they both hurt themselves in part by falling for their own hype. Beto's I was born for this, Stacey's superwoman cover. Some people would wonder who they were doing it for.

by Anonymousreply 108November 11, 2022 10:18 AM

Beto would do well in Oregon, but I think he and Stacey should work for the DNC.

by Anonymousreply 110November 11, 2022 10:52 AM

He told Texans he was coming for their guns.

On several occasions he said we should revoke tax exceptions for anti-gay churches.

Whatever you think of these positions why would he say that in gun loving, deeply religious, Texas? He is a mystery to me.

Abbott’s recipe: strong message, ground game He’s ‘hardest-working person’ in politics, aide to governor says By ROBERT T. GARRETT Austin Bureau rtgarrett@dallasnews.com McALLEN — How did Greg Abbott win another term as Texas governor? Abbott escapes the “bubble” around the state’s top office by chatting up Texans in selfie lines. The habit helps him know voters’ concerns, aides say. Oh, and did they mention he’s the most relentless workaholic in American politics? On Wednesday, three Abbott campaign aides spoke at a news conference about factors crucial to his resounding victory over Democratic opponent Beto O’Rourke in the midterm election. The governor talked in his campaign about voters’ top concerns and spearheaded a successful push to recruit down-ballot Republicans in Democratic strongholds, according to Abbott strategist Dave Carney, campaign chairman Gardner Pate and spokesman Mark Miner. In southern Texas, Abbott stumped 97 times after announcing for reelection in January. In mid-August, Abbott’s campaign started airing the first of an eventual 10 to 12 widely seen TV commercials. They “told a story” that Abbott will keep the state prosperous and safe, Carney recalled. Late last month, the fabled Abbott ground game began. In the race’s final 15 days, the governor was a blur, rushing to 34 get-out-the-vote events across Texas to stir social-media “mavens” in his camp to get busy at the right time, Carney said. Big payoff On Tuesday, the carefully planned Abbott effort paid dividends: He thumped O’Rourke by 11 percentage points, or nearly 900,000 votes out of just more than 8 million cast. That was shy of Abbott’s victory margins in 2014 and 2018, though in those cycles he didn’t face as well-funded an opponent as O’Rourke. Republicans flipped congressional and legislative seats in South Texas — not as many as the party had hoped, but to Abbott aides, a promising sign for the future. Though Abbott repeatedly claimed he would win a majority of Hispanics’ votes this year, it’s not yet known if he achieved or fell short of that goal, Carney said. TV network exit polls “show us getting more than 40%” of Latinos’ votes, he said.

R108,

Just wait until the movie version of Uvalde comes out.

And wait until the beginning of 2023 — when DPS promises to release the reports.

Beto will rise again! As a hero!

by Anonymousreply 113November 11, 2022 11:34 AM

R111 There are lot of coastal liberals who are so desperate to gain control of the electoral votes Texas brings that they don't pause to think critically about a candidate's viability before they start dumping money into a race.

An electable Democrat in Texas would closely resemble Joe Manchin or Kristen Sinema, people these donors hate with a passion and would never give a dime to.

by Anonymousreply 114November 11, 2022 11:51 AM

Beto can't win elections in this climate. He has the ability, persona and even the looks of an old-fashioned American politician. If he was running 25 years ago, he'd have gone much further. These days the country is either regressive or progressive, depending on location, and he doesn't fit into either camp.

If he really wants to stay in politics, he needs to stay in some kind of unelected role for several years, and also move to another state. He shouldn't run again until 2028 at the earliest, and then for local office.

Stacey is a genius when it comes to getting the vote out and we need her in the DNC.

by Anonymousreply 115November 11, 2022 11:57 AM

Y'all need to understand.

Ever since Karl Rove usurped Ann Richards and installed Dubya, something rotten has been festering in the State of Texas.

Beto was a winner.

Texas is insurmountably huge.

Even if LBJ was resurrected, LBJ couldn't win as Governor.

In 2018, Lupe Valdez struggled to raise $1million.

Yet 3.5 million voted for Lupe.

Beto raised almost $80 million

And still only got 3.5 million votes.....

He can’t really move to another state because TX is such a part of his brand. It will come across as try hard and even a bit carpetbagger of him. Hillary was able to do it because she wasn’t tied down to one location as first lady. Pete can probably do it as well, although he should probably stick to the midwest. But Beto and his brand are tied to Texas. He could run again for Congress but he won’t because its bad for his ego.

I don’t blame him for running for Gov. He knew he wouldn’t win, but he did it to help down ballot Dems. But he was wrong and stupid to run for President in 2020 when he would have had a better chance in the Senate.

by Anonymousreply 117November 11, 2022 12:02 PM

The great thing about Abbott being re-elected is that he's now — ENTIRELY — solved the border crisis.

Problem solved.

He has NO ONE else to blame but himself!

[quote] but I think he and Stacey should work for the DNC.

Absolutely!! A pair that will definitely attract voters to the Dems!

by Anonymousreply 122November 11, 2022 1:06 PM

What he should have done is run for a seat in the House from a relatively liberal district in Texas (like they claim the Austin area is) and held the seat to bide his time until either the tides shifted in Texas or other opportunities presented themselves on the national stage, like a cabinet seat.

He's a relatively young man at 50 years old. But, he was never going to win a statewide office in Texas as it currently is. The last Texas governor who was a Dem was Ann Richards in 1991-1995, 30 years ago.

Losing so many elections has pretty much ended his political career.

by Anonymousreply 123November 11, 2022 1:15 PM

What’s his real name? Robert?

Robert o’rourke has some of the most jacked teeth I’ve seen on a middle class person.

He looks absolutely ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 124November 11, 2022 1:16 PM

I think he could relocate in the country but he'd have to actually have a purpose other than running for re-election. Both he and Abrams (who did great work on the ground) are too branded as into their own PR (though I'd argue Beto is in worse shape than Abrams, oddly, as she couldn't jump up on a counter if you paid her.) OK, that's snarky and I get why they took the PR opportunities when they came but both of them lacked a kind of humility about their rising star that I think backfired. When you're announcing I'm going to be this, I'm going to be that it is very tricky to pull off.

by Anonymousreply 125November 11, 2022 3:02 PM

Beto would be so viable in my mouth.

by Anonymousreply 137November 13, 2022 9:36 PM

Beto, IMO, just seems dumb. Seems like a navel-gazer.

by Anonymousreply 138November 13, 2022 9:37 PM

I think in Beto's case Texas is just a lot more conservative than we realize or predicted. I think people have taken for granted conservative or republican culture just like liberal culture permeates around big cities and their populated suburbs. People think the dynasty that is Houston predicts what minorities in other parts of the state behave and react to. Chicanos in Houston might be democratic but as a whole other Mexican Americans see more of their culture in conservative white people. This even permeates to black Americans outside of the big cities. Someone should do a real deep analysis on my theory.

by Anonymousreply 139November 14, 2022 2:28 AM

I still want to know why so many people's votes in Texas seemed to have not been counted when they checked online. Remember in the Beto/Cruz election people actually filmed their votes flipping in real-time from Beto to Cruz. Nothing came of that either.

by Anonymousreply 140November 14, 2022 4:48 AM

Despite three defeats, Beto O'Rourke not likely done in Texas politics

Beto O’Rourke isn’t done.

Even after three big defeats and Republicans declaring it the end of the road for the El Paso native, Democratic leaders and O’Rourke himself are far from closing the door on his continued role in Texas politics, or even another run for office someday.

“I don’t know what my role or yours will be going forward, but I’m in this fight for life,” O’Rourke said Tuesday as he conceded his loss to Gov. Greg Abbott. “Who knows what’s next for any of us, right?”

In the short term, O’Rourke made it clear that he is going home. Not only do he and his wife Amy O’Rourke have three children ranging from middle school to high school, but O’Rourke's mother was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer months ago and has been in an out of Houston for treatments while he was campaigning.

“We’re all on your campaign now against this cancer,” O’Rourke, 50, told her from the podium Tuesday in El Paso.

Texas Democratic Party chairman Gilberto Hinojosa said everyone needs to give O’Rourke some space. But he said there’s no doubt in his mind that the party is going to need him in the future.

“Don’t write the guy off,” Hinojosa said.

Obviously, the election didn’t turn out how O’Rourke or the Democrats would have liked, but Hinojosa said it is important to consider what O’Rourke just did.

No other Texas candidate can energize the Democratic base and raise the kind of money O’Rourke does, Hinojosa said. And more importantly, the O’Rourke campaign built an infrastructure that will make Democrats more competitive in future elections. 'He can choose the role'

Before O'Rourke got into the governor's race, Hinojosa said the party talked to several potential candidates who had no interest in taking on a Republican incumbent with $40 million in his campaign account in a midterm election cycle expected to be bad for the party that has the White House.

Beating an incumbent governor is rare. Before Tuesday, there have been 206 governors in the United States who ran for re-election since 1992, with 176 winning another term. That is an 85 percent success rate.

Still, O’Rourke agreed to the uphill battle.

Gov. Greg Abbott won Tuesday by 11 percentage points, according to unofficial results.

But O’Rourke still pulled in 44 percent of the vote, the highest percentage for a Democratic candidate since the late Ann Richards won 46 percent in losing to former Gov. George W. Bush in 1994.

Hinojosa calls it a competitive contest that forced Abbott to spend more than $139 million to win a third term.

Former San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro said even in defeat, O’Rourke has moved the party forward by investing in infrastructure and building a network of donors and volunteers through his campaigns that no Democrat in Texas can match.

“He still has a bright future,” Castro said. “He can choose the role he wants to play here in Texas. If he wants to run again in the future, then he has the talent, the ability to fundraise and the name ID to make another run in the years to come.”

Political science experts from around the state say another run for office would be hard for O’Rourke because of his previous losses. He lost the 2018 U.S. Senate race to Republican Ted Cruz by 2.6 percentage points and dropped out of the 2020 Democratic presidential primary before the first votes in Iowa were cast as Joe Biden surged to the top of the polls.

The next U.S. Senate race in Texas will be in 2024, when Cruz is up for re-election again, but he’s also eyeing another run at the White House.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, a Republican, has previously said he won’t seek re-election again, and if Abbott doesn't seek a record 4th term as governor, his departure could leave two big statewide races without an incumbent in the next statewide midterms in 2026.

Republicans and even a few Democrats wasted little time in writing off O'Rourke this week after his double-digit defeat. Updated voter info is key

by Anonymousreply 141November 14, 2022 12:42 PM

Beto didn't lose the race for the Dem nomination for President. He dropped out well before. The only Dems who presented themselves at the primaries were Biden, Bernie, Warren, Buttigieg and Bloomberg. They lost.

I've been very leery of the 2 million Californians who moved to Texas in the past couple of years. The ones I've encountered are rightwingers or autistic techies who think they're libertarians because they don't want to pay taxes. I'm assuming in 2024 they will have figured out that Republicans have turned Texas into a Banana Republic and revolt.

by Anonymousreply 142November 14, 2022 8:54 PM

[Quote]No other Texas candidate can energize the Democratic base and raise the kind of money O’Rourke does, Hinojosa said.

I'll never stop running until I win, vow Beto O'Rourke's skin tags!

by Anonymousreply 144November 14, 2022 9:22 PM

I think this biggest problem for Dems in Texas is the stark cultural divide between urban liberal areas and the rest of the state.

A candidate who appeals to urban liberals won't appeal to possible Democratic voters in rural areas, and vice versa.

We're talking about two separate cultures that barely interact with each other.

Beto owns a web services company in El Paso which he started 20 years ago. A nice little earner. He was also teaching Texas politics at the LBJ School at UT Austin. The Texas Democratic Party is run by an elderly idiot called Gilberto Hinojosa. He's useless and corrupt and spends his time sucking up to the DNC and doing nothing for Texas Dems. He was just reelected head of the party by the clique of dumb cronies who run the Texas Dems and don't like Beto and never have. Beto has built up a massive base of campaign workers, volunteers and donors. I hope he takes over the party and stops all the crony shit which has forced lousy candidates on us for 20 years. Hinojosa has 2 daughters, one works for the DNC and one is a state rep. He's no doubt hoping when he finally drops dead, one of his daughters will carry on the proud family tradition of losing.

by Anonymousreply 166November 16, 2022 4:22 PM

R167 did you use Google Translate to make your comment?

Hot Wheels is such a joke. The fucker got $10 million off a lawsuit by suing the tree limb that fell on him. He went jogging in River Oaks - the Beverly Hills of Houston. He didn't live there. He was broke. He no doubt went jogging there in the hopes of bumping into rich people to suck up to. Sucking up to rich people has been Hot Wheels' life's work. He went jogging in a storm. If what happened to him happened to anybody else he would have said 'fucker should have looked where he was going'. Actually he did: when he became AG through the patronage of Dubya, he enacted tort reform to prevent any other Texan from getting a generous award like he did. The parents who sued Alex Jones in Austin will only get max. $750K.

by Anonymousreply 180November 16, 2022 9:20 PM

Everyone keeps saying that the grassroots Democratic organizations in Florida and Texas are horrendous. Why don't they work on improving that shit and getting the ground game up to par in those states instead of just dumping endless amount of money into the same losing candidates year after year??

by Anonymousreply 181November 16, 2022 10:21 PM

R181 Texas is more important to the DNC as an ATM: frustrated Texas Dems fill their coffers. The DNC has done nothing to help a Texas Democrat get elected in 25 years. And the head of the Texas Dems is a minion of the DNC. In 2018 three weeks before early voting started, Beto got attacked in the NY Times and on MSNBC and CNN by Democratic toadies who wanted him to give his fundraising donations to Claire McCaskill, Heidi Heitkamp and Joe Donnelly because - according to them - Beto was too long a shot and the other three could easily get reelected. Beto lost by 2.5%, McCaskill by 6%, Heitkamp by 11% and Donnelly by 6%. Clairvoyant, they ain't.
