Covers and re-imaginings of songs that you like!

I ran across the symphonic version of a-ha's 'Take On Me' performed by the original singer. I find it a beautiful and stirring remake.

Bridgerton popularized them, but I've really enjoyed string quartet versions of various songs. 2 Cellos also does some good versions of songs.

I can imagine a couple dancing their first dance at a wedding to this.

Jackie De Shannon’s pairing of Little Anthony and the Imperials’ Hurt So Bad in a medley with the Supremes’ You Keep Me Hangin’ On, turning the latter from bouncy to outright tormented, far more in line with the lyrics.

Tori Amos reimagined several of her songs with a string octet in 2012 (ten frigging years ago! How?), and "Hey Jupiter" is my favourite. I remember listening to this on repeat on my way home from work.

I have 2 "reimagined" faves, the U2 version of "Night and Day" from 1990...back when U2 was still excellent...haunting, sexy cover

And David Bowie and Angelo Badlamenti's absolutely beautiful retelling of "A Foggy Day in London Town"...Bowie sings beautifully and that orchestration...always makes me tear up in the end

Chrissie Hynde’s lo-fi album of Bob Dylan covers is exquisite. She focuses more on forgotten gems from lesser-known periods like his much-maligned Christian record rather than doing a zillionth version of the usual classics.

Yes, R8, the entire 'Red, Hot + Blue' AIDS fundraiser record is very fun. I bought it as a twink, on cassette! But have since bought digital versions.

Speaking of fundraisers; not very different than the original, but a fave:

I always thought Peter Gabriel’s version of Bowie’s Heroes was far superior. It has a sadness to it that’s not captured by Bowie or the Wallflowers.

Any versions of songs made upbeat and dynamic would be good.

I’m tired of cover versions made low-fi and downbeat.

Devo's version of "Satisfaction" by The Rolling Stones (approved by Mick Jagger).

Quoting the top comment at youtube:

[quote] Unless you saw this live in 1978 you can't possibly know just how mind bending this moment was. Nobody had ever heard or seen anything like this on national TV and it left viewers as stunned as it left them hungry for more. DEVO was so far ahead of their time that in 2078 they'll STILL be ahead of their time. 'Epic' doesn't cover this performance.

Siouxsie & the Banshees The Thorn EP

from the wikipedia page:

[quote] The purpose of the EP was three-fold: Siouxsie stated that she wanted to induct new guitarist John Valentine Carruthers into the Banshees, to try out some string arrangements, and to simply re-record tracks that had evolved on tour.[1]

[quote] The Thorn features four of the band's tracks recorded with orchestral instrumentation: "Overground" originally appeared on the Banshees' debut album The Scream; "Placebo Effect" was a song from their second album Join Hands, while "Voices" and "Red Over White" were previously released as B-sides from the singles "Hong Kong Garden" and "Israel", respectively.

The re-imagining of Blondie's "Heart of Glass" by Philip Glass (Crabtree Remix). It uses Debbie's vocals but the tempo is slowed and it's basically strings.
