My millennial niece told me, who's not on FB, Twitter, TikTok or Instagram, that I was the only one she knew who was not on social media. Begging the question, is DL considered social media?
Is DL part of the social media universe?
by Anonymous | reply 40 | November 8, 2022 10:06 AM |
DL is not social media. We are anonymous. The point of SM is to go viral and become an influencer. Can you imagine the catfight here if a post went viral?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | November 6, 2022 4:24 PM |
Of course it's social media.
On wikipedia DL is specifically called an "internet forum" while wikipedia also calls internet forums "an element of social media technologies."
by Anonymous | reply 2 | November 7, 2022 10:44 AM |
Yes but it's the type of social media that was came before it needed the title. Social media usually describes the toxic mainstream types of social websites.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | November 7, 2022 10:49 AM |
No, Datalouge is a message board.
Message boards predate social media platforms. They arised with Usenet, in the 1980s, and now are in decay.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | November 7, 2022 10:53 AM |
Sure, it's media in which you socialize
by Anonymous | reply 5 | November 7, 2022 10:54 AM |
I’d say it’s not social media, although obviously it depends on how you define it. For me social media necessitates a profile with settings, photos, etc and “putting yourself out there”. Social media is about making yourself visible. DL is anonymous so it’s not very social. It’s just a cacophony of voices being bitchy!

Well if there's one thing I associate with DL, it's decay.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | November 7, 2022 11:01 AM |
It’s antisocial media.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | November 7, 2022 11:04 AM |
A forum that you can only get to via web browser is NOT social media. This is a forum or a message board. It's not social media.
Since DL is not only not even close to Web 2.0 and doesn't have profiles or an ability for users to contact each other, it doesn't meet the definition of social media at all.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | November 7, 2022 11:14 AM |
So, yes and no
by Anonymous | reply 10 | November 7, 2022 11:22 AM |
Two things OP: 1) Datalounge is not social media, for the reasons described above and 2 I don’t think you used “begging the question” correctly. Or maybe completely? You’d have to have referenced a circular statement like Datalounge is social media because it is a media, and it is social. Then you’d be begging the question. I think. (This is why I don’t use this phrase.)
Where are the DL grammar nerds to derail this thread with me and give an explanation?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | November 7, 2022 11:26 AM |
Does it matter?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | November 7, 2022 11:57 AM |
It’s anti-social for sure.

It always feels like1995 on here but that's what I like about DL lol. Other sites like LPSG are run by PC CUNTS who give you a warning for a " mean" comment but will allow you to post full nudes and porn and even post incest fantasies 🤮 total fucking loser site but I hang on for the pictures. I hate LSA for the same reasons but those bitches are incredibly homophobic. They have good gossip but it can be very uncomfortable over there if you are BMSM. I always hated Facebook and Twitter and never bothered to make accounts. The only thing I don't like is you can't ever edit your comments and get "oh deared" to death haha. A little outdated but it's tolerable. I just feel amongst friends here even if I can't see your faces, you guys make me laugh and give the best snarky advice and more help than you'll ever know.

It’s a blog / bulletin board. More like a niche news site that allows comments…although our topics are user generated. These categories (blog or bulletin board) fall under the umbrella of social media. DL doesn’t have bells and whistles (tools to share, an app) but it has a free option and anonymity is optional…although its version of public would merely be some text in the”posted by” field. Incidentally, our slutty cousin LPSG is more social media than DL in that it has user profiles
by Anonymous | reply 15 | November 7, 2022 12:47 PM |
DL is not a blog.
I cannot believe that someone in 2022 would still think DL was a blog. It's not a blog. It wasn't a blog back in 2003 when all the elderloungers were calling it a "blog" and it's not a blog now.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | November 7, 2022 12:52 PM |
Don't listen to r15, good lord. Blogs, message boards, bulletin boards, forums etc. do NOT "fall under the umbrella of social media."
Those terms are also not interchangeable. A blog is a website with regular posts, like 538 or Talking Points Memo. A board or a forum is like DL or LPSG or Metafilter. They're not the same.

Oh, dear.
No, it doesn't.

DL is social media. DL is google. DL is the internet.
Everything else just followed suit way, way after The DataLounge was born.

The DL taught the internet how to be a raving bitch

R9 You're socializing. It's media. You share. It's social media.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | November 7, 2022 9:08 PM |
It is not social media. And you should be proud of the fact that you aren’t on it anywhere.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | November 7, 2022 9:26 PM |
If it’s not social media, why all the Borises posting here?!
by Anonymous | reply 25 | November 8, 2022 6:33 AM |
I think most of the political trolls on here are just assholes who are terminally online, and not paid trolls. Our trolls tend to go on and on, when a paid troll would just post and run, because their job is to smear shit all over the internet, not just irritate a handful of eldergays.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | November 8, 2022 6:43 AM |
It's social limbo.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | November 8, 2022 6:51 AM |
DL is more equivalentt to a Usenet group like alt.showbiz.gossip than a real social media platform. Some users sign their posts and develop a following, but the majority remain anonymous.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | November 8, 2022 7:01 AM |
I don't care what it is. I just want it to never go away.
Muriel, don't you ever quit us.

Datalounge is not a blog but in the past it used to look sorta blogish with a calendar of events, a culture section, news section, sex surveys and even had a chance for some lucky Datalounger to win a prize.

DARKGEMINILORD just started a thread about joining Twitter because DL censors him for his Trans BS and it got cancelled by DL. 😂

Googling "is a message board considered social media" the internet seems to think it is, though the general feeling is it is a grey area.
Message boards, as many upthread have noted, predate social media, but are definitely the forerunners of social media, and there are even successful newer message boards like NextDoor.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | November 8, 2022 9:12 AM |
Forums/message boards are used to socialize so I think they are.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | November 8, 2022 9:24 AM |
You know, OP, I wondered this myself this morning listening to the wireless. ABC Melbourne host, Sammy J, was asking listeners their preferred social media platform. I don't tweet, barely open Instagram and use Facebook as little as possible. Occasionally, I enjoy leaving slightly scandalous remarks on the Daily Fail site. But overall, the DL is my favourite place on the internet. Whatever we are, I appreciate having this space.

[quote]It is not social media. And you should be proud of the fact that you aren’t on it anywhere.
There it is. I noticed in this thread that people are going past just trying to be accurate and are adamantly saying this is not social media, clearly wanting it not to be. As this person stated, for whatever reason, they don't want to have to admit they use social media. Well, you are using it. DL is social media.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | November 8, 2022 9:45 AM |
There's nothing wrong with using social media, it's the abuse of social media that's become the problem. Smaller sites like DL still have their share of issues, but on a far more manageable scale
by Anonymous | reply 38 | November 8, 2022 9:52 AM |
Yes, DL is a social media forum if you're a registered user since people can look you up and say hello and check on your well-being. Bit for anonymous incels, it's like a shitter where you can dump your shit on it.
