Wayland Flowers & Madame

Anybody remember them?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 102November 10, 2022 1:54 AM

Of course. Takes me way back.

by Anonymousreply 1November 5, 2022 5:47 PM

In the 70s, I saw them on a talk show. Madame said, "Joan Crawford's dead and deserves every minute of it." As a young gayling, I thought that was hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 2November 5, 2022 5:48 PM

They had a syndicated TV show on that co-starred a Landers sister. Madame had a music segment on Solid Gold for a while. She appeared in her own recording studio booth. I remember there being a record flat of Sheena Easton’s Best Kept Secret behind her on the wall.

by Anonymousreply 3November 5, 2022 5:49 PM

I saw them in "concert" in Atlanta circa 1982

How Madame was able to predict the clown face stars of today I'll never know

Remember them?! My sense of humor was profoundly influenced by Madame! Much to my parents' chagrin.

by Anonymousreply 5November 5, 2022 5:55 PM

Madame was always so rude. that is what I liked best.

Raja did her on All Stars - All winners edition on Drag Race.

Every Gay man has at least one grisly old dame friend like Madame. It's like they assigned you one. Kind of like Lesbians and their toasters

by Anonymousreply 9November 5, 2022 6:05 PM

Wayland was cute. As a gay performer he was a trailblazer and pioneer.

by Anonymousreply 10November 5, 2022 6:07 PM

^ Nice guy too. I've met him

by Anonymousreply 11November 5, 2022 6:15 PM

Did you like Lady Elaine Fairchild, too, R6?

by Anonymousreply 12November 5, 2022 6:20 PM

She was a mean drunk, that "Lady" Elaine.

by Anonymousreply 13November 5, 2022 6:20 PM

Madame gave Corey Feldman work

by Anonymousreply 14November 5, 2022 7:43 PM

R2

In the 70s, I saw them on a talk show. Madame said, "Joan Crawford's dead and deserves every minute of it." As a young gayling, I thought that was hilarious.

Oh dear. "Young gayling" is redundant.

by Anonymousreply 15November 5, 2022 7:49 PM

I lived in Las Vegas in the early 80s and Wayland walked into a gay bar. He seemed to be drawn to me and walked directly over, leaned down and magically said,"Can my friend sit there?"

Oh, well...

by Anonymousreply 16November 5, 2022 7:53 PM

@r15, There's a word we use for people like you, but it's not polite to use it outside of a kennel 😏

by Anonymousreply 17November 5, 2022 7:55 PM

R17 Go ahead and use it, if you think you can use it correctly.

by Anonymousreply 18November 5, 2022 8:46 PM

^^ "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious"

by Anonymousreply 19November 5, 2022 9:32 PM

I wish, Wayland Flowers was still alive and completely healthy.

by Anonymousreply 20November 5, 2022 11:37 PM

[quote]Wayland was cute.

He was - did he ever find a nice girl to marry?

by Anonymousreply 21November 5, 2022 11:39 PM

^ He was a confirmed bachelor married to his work

by Anonymousreply 22November 5, 2022 11:44 PM

Madam was in complete control of that relationship.

by Anonymousreply 23November 6, 2022 12:28 AM

OP, who is that man with Kellyanne Conway?

by Anonymousreply 24November 6, 2022 12:31 AM

Don't forget me!

Her outrageous charm fills this funny farm that we call Madame's Plaaaace ...

by Anonymousreply 26November 6, 2022 12:35 AM

AIDS is fuck.

by Anonymousreply 27November 6, 2022 12:38 AM

I danced with them one night at Studio One.

by Anonymousreply 28November 6, 2022 12:53 AM

I remember her interviewing Wendy O. Williams of the Plasmatics on Solid Gold with a rhino horn on her head. Wendy looked like she would rather be anyplace else.

by Anonymousreply 29November 6, 2022 1:02 AM

Madame in blackface and Wayland using woman voice to portray her anger me as a citizen of the 21st century.

by Anonymousreply 30November 6, 2022 1:09 AM

Wayland's pianist Gary was also his life partner. I met Wayland way back in his early days in Atlanta. He did a show at The Sweet Gum Head show bar. This was before he'd made it in Hollywood. In real life he was a pretty sexy looking guy. Hairy chested, good body, and a sweet man. He had one thing on his mind and that was to become as big a star as humanly possible. He was making a good run of it until that bitch AIDS took him.

by Anonymousreply 31November 6, 2022 2:10 AM

Madame has had 4 people operate her after Wayland passed. I know 2 of them, There are some stories about Marlene who "inherited" Madame as a property from Wayland.

by Anonymousreply 32November 6, 2022 2:40 AM

@r31, " The Sweet Gum Head show bar."

Sweet Gum Head!?... Gurl, you go back in Atlanta farther than Miss Scarlett herself. I saw Waylon and Madame at the Woodruff Arts Center. Do you remember Ru Paul pedaling his ass around Midtown on his bicycle? Before they were famous, huh? 😂

That's Jiffy in R25 not Madame in blackface. No need to get your bloomers in a twist r30

by Anonymousreply 34November 6, 2022 5:07 AM

[quote] "Did you like Lady Elaine Fairchild, too..."

R12 There's only one Lady Elaine Fairchilde, and the name is spelled with an E at the end, toots! "F-a-i-r-c-h-i-l-d-e". ...And don't forget it!

R31, Yes, I've been around for a long time, and I definitely remember Ru before fame hit her. She also did a few shows at the SGH. That was back when Ru was working at his cousin's auto garage as a day gig.

by Anonymousreply 36November 6, 2022 12:47 PM

^ And I thought I was the oldest living Gay guy from Atlanta. When I first moved to Atlanta right out of College the Armorettes became my best friends. I hung with them at the softball games the whole first year I lived there

by Anonymousreply 37November 6, 2022 1:15 PM

The club act sure was stale. They carted the same routine and jokes for 5 years or more

by Anonymousreply 38November 6, 2022 5:13 PM

I saw Wayland 5 days in a row at the Casbar Theater in the Sahara in the 80s. He did a different show each night. The culmination of the Friday show was the appearance of Miss Jiffy. Wayland was a treasure. Oh, and he performed barefoot.

by Anonymousreply 39November 6, 2022 5:58 PM

R39 you were probably paying any attention

by Anonymousreply 40November 6, 2022 6:34 PM

"My friend Maude isn't very bright. I bought her a vibrator for Christmas and she knocked out four teeth the first day."

by Anonymousreply 41November 6, 2022 7:06 PM

R41 that was in every single club act Westland did

by Anonymousreply 42November 6, 2022 7:15 PM

Wayland

by Anonymousreply 43November 6, 2022 7:15 PM

After so many years, so many haters.

by Anonymousreply 44November 6, 2022 7:19 PM

^ What haters? Are you on the right thread?

by Anonymousreply 45November 6, 2022 7:21 PM

^ Oh, wait, I have some people blocked, probably for good reason 😏

by Anonymousreply 46November 6, 2022 7:23 PM

I liked Madame on tv

by Anonymousreply 50November 6, 2022 7:57 PM

The theme song for Madame's Place had the line "And at Madame's Place, she's a primetime queen!" ...

... which likely went over the head of every straight viewer. Of which there were few.

by Anonymousreply 51November 6, 2022 8:13 PM

Are there recordings of Wayland's acts somewhere online?

by Anonymousreply 52November 6, 2022 8:45 PM

^ You tube is loaded with them

by Anonymousreply 53November 6, 2022 8:47 PM

The stage shows or just the sitcom appearances?

by Anonymousreply 54November 6, 2022 8:53 PM

Wayland would be 83 now.

by Anonymousreply 55November 6, 2022 8:53 PM

I bet Madame would be making jokes about what a geezer he was too.

by Anonymousreply 56November 6, 2022 8:56 PM

@r54, Is your puter broke? ☹️ (look for yourself)

by Anonymousreply 57November 6, 2022 8:58 PM

R57 Is your boyfriend's dick broke? (Go fuck yourself)

by Anonymousreply 58November 6, 2022 9:13 PM

^ What the fuck is wrong with you that you can't google "Wayland Flowers & Madame"?

Oh, wait, you're stupid, aren't you?

by Anonymousreply 59November 6, 2022 9:33 PM

Last summer Madame was giving performances in P-town

by Anonymousreply 60November 6, 2022 9:34 PM

Mean People Alert!!!

by Anonymousreply 61November 6, 2022 9:56 PM

With her latest round of cosmetic improvements, Jane Fonda is starting to look "Madamesque." There should be a live-action movie about Madame, starring La Fonda.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 62November 7, 2022 1:09 AM

A Madame movie starring M G or J would be good!

by Anonymousreply 63November 7, 2022 3:28 AM

I'm fascinated by these country-specific cultural icons that for whatever reason never went further than within their own country - when Raja did this on All Stars 7, everyone seemed to know who it was but British people were mystified - probably similar to when in the current Drag Race UK season a couple of the queens did a Mr Blobby tribute - all Brits would know who that was but I'm sure Americans or any other country would probably have never heard of it.

by Anonymousreply 64November 7, 2022 10:41 AM

Wayland had a uniquely Southern Gay charm about him that played well in the South, but like Jeff Foxworthy and his redneck bit, it probably would fall flat outside the US

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 65November 7, 2022 10:48 AM

Jeff Foxworthy doesn't have ounce the charm Wayland Flowers had.

by Anonymousreply 66November 7, 2022 10:50 AM

^ Jeff appealed to a different southerner than Wayland 🙄

by Anonymousreply 67November 7, 2022 10:57 AM

Larry appealed to an even more "basic" southerner

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 68November 7, 2022 11:00 AM

Before rednecks became political thanks to Trump they were funny, now they're just assholes 😠

by Anonymousreply 69November 7, 2022 11:28 AM

Larry The Cable Guy (does he even still have a career) may have appealed to rednecks, but he was neither a Southerner or a redneck. He was born and raised in the Great Plains state of Nebraska, in a prosperous middle class family. His act (especially his accent) is/was a complete sham.

by Anonymousreply 70November 7, 2022 12:02 PM

^ Most comedians are actors in a sense. Jeff Foxworthy was from a middle class Atlanta family. Hardly a redneck, but he understood them

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 71November 7, 2022 12:13 PM

Jeff was hot, back in the day.

by Anonymousreply 72November 7, 2022 12:23 PM

^ Yeah, I'm from Atlanta and always had a bit of a crush on him 😍

by Anonymousreply 73November 7, 2022 12:39 PM

I remember him appearing on British TV a couple of times in the late 1970s, early 1980s. He was good.

Pretty sure it was the Des O'Connor show, which had massive ratings at the time (we only had 3 or 4 TV channels back then). Probably the UK equivalent of Jonny Carson.

by Anonymousreply 74November 7, 2022 1:10 PM

Real question: were Waylon Flowers and Madame ever involved with The Muppets?

It seems logical she might have been a guest on The Muppet Show as they were both in the public eye around the same time.

I can’t find any evidence online, but I suspect Madame didn’t want anyone hogging the spotlight.

by Anonymousreply 75November 7, 2022 1:19 PM

^ I think Madame may have been a little too adult for the Muppets

by Anonymousreply 76November 7, 2022 1:24 PM

IMDB says he was an uncredited puppeteer on The Muppet Movie released in 1979.

by Anonymousreply 77November 7, 2022 2:11 PM

You mean Madame and Miss Piggy didn't sing a duet of "Class" in the 1976 season of The Muppet Show?

by Anonymousreply 78November 7, 2022 2:20 PM

My brother was part of a contingent of Las Vegas gay guys who all had HIV and AIDS and was good friends with Wayland who was one of the most helpful and supportive people when he first got his diagnosis. He spoke very highly of him. My brother outlived him by about three years.

by Anonymousreply 79November 7, 2022 2:38 PM

He couldn't even be bothered to be a ventriloquist. Lazy

by Anonymousreply 80November 8, 2022 5:46 PM

"Wayland isn't a ventriloquist — and I'm no fuckin' dummy!" — Madame

I loved them as a kid. Born in 74. I remember them from Solid Gold, Hollywood Squares and various talk shows. I always associate them with this chair.

by Anonymousreply 85November 9, 2022 1:53 AM

Currently, in the Joan Didion auction, her chair has already doubled the high range of the estimate. It may end up as the most expensive peacock chair ever!

by Anonymousreply 87November 9, 2022 2:25 AM

I loved Wayland and Madame. Good memories of watching them on tv when I was a kid, but looking back, I probably missed a lot of the jokes. Will check out YouTube.

by Anonymousreply 88November 9, 2022 3:24 AM

Loved them too, miss them so much!

by Anonymousreply 89November 9, 2022 3:28 AM

Wayland Flowers. What a wonderful name! How can one not be gay with a name like that? 💕💐🌹🥀🌻🏳️‍🌈

by Anonymousreply 90November 9, 2022 3:30 AM

My next door neighbor who worked at the publishing house that released this book when I was about 10 gave this to me as gift . I wish I still had it. It’s so funny I was just thinking about Flowers and Madame recently. Madonna looks like she went to the same surgeon as Madame by the way.

R22 That should be BEARKING! What a coincidence that she would die while we are discussing Madame.

by Anonymousreply 93November 9, 2022 2:21 PM

A thread on Waylon Flowers & Madame veering off into a discussion about peacock wicker chairs is the magic I come to DataLounge for.

by Anonymousreply 94November 9, 2022 2:57 PM

R62 thank you for posting an article about Jane Fonda from 2021 and snarking on her look. BEFORE HER CURRENT CANCER DIAGNOSIS. Of which you remain oblivious in November 2022.

by Anonymousreply 95November 9, 2022 3:01 PM

Aw, R87 Having a rough morning?

by Anonymousreply 96November 9, 2022 4:47 PM

Waylon Smithers was named in honour of Wayland Flowers.

by Anonymousreply 97November 9, 2022 4:54 PM

@r96, Not as rough as that face of yours. I've heard of "resting bitch face", but you have "resting idiot face" 😬

by Anonymousreply 98November 9, 2022 5:24 PM

Children, children! Stop it right now.

by Anonymousreply 99November 9, 2022 8:06 PM

R96, You stop that fresh talk right this minute.

by Anonymousreply 100November 10, 2022 1:02 AM

Why is the syphilitic cunt at R59 going from thread to thread screeching at people for not using Google, does she or one of her crotch fruit own stock in the company?

by Anonymousreply 101November 10, 2022 1:29 AM
