Anybody remember them?
Of course. Takes me way back.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | November 5, 2022 5:47 PM |
In the 70s, I saw them on a talk show. Madame said, "Joan Crawford's dead and deserves every minute of it." As a young gayling, I thought that was hilarious.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | November 5, 2022 5:48 PM |
They had a syndicated TV show on that co-starred a Landers sister. Madame had a music segment on Solid Gold for a while. She appeared in her own recording studio booth. I remember there being a record flat of Sheena Easton’s Best Kept Secret behind her on the wall.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | November 5, 2022 5:49 PM |
I saw them in "concert" in Atlanta circa 1982
How Madame was able to predict the clown face stars of today I'll never know
by Anonymous | reply 4 | November 5, 2022 5:54 PM |
Remember them?! My sense of humor was profoundly influenced by Madame! Much to my parents' chagrin.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | November 5, 2022 5:55 PM |
Madame was always so rude. that is what I liked best.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | November 5, 2022 5:56 PM |
Raja did her on All Stars - All winners edition on Drag Race.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | November 5, 2022 5:58 PM |
Every Gay man has at least one grisly old dame friend like Madame. It's like they assigned you one. Kind of like Lesbians and their toasters
by Anonymous | reply 9 | November 5, 2022 6:05 PM |
Wayland was cute. As a gay performer he was a trailblazer and pioneer.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | November 5, 2022 6:07 PM |

Did you like Lady Elaine Fairchild, too, R6?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | November 5, 2022 6:20 PM |
She was a mean drunk, that "Lady" Elaine.

Oh dear. "Young gayling" is redundant.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | November 5, 2022 7:49 PM |
I lived in Las Vegas in the early 80s and Wayland walked into a gay bar. He seemed to be drawn to me and walked directly over, leaned down and magically said,"Can my friend sit there?"
Oh, well...

Madame in blackface and Wayland using woman voice to portray her anger me as a citizen of the 21st century.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | November 6, 2022 1:09 AM |
Wayland's pianist Gary was also his life partner. I met Wayland way back in his early days in Atlanta. He did a show at The Sweet Gum Head show bar. This was before he'd made it in Hollywood. In real life he was a pretty sexy looking guy. Hairy chested, good body, and a sweet man. He had one thing on his mind and that was to become as big a star as humanly possible. He was making a good run of it until that bitch AIDS took him.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | November 6, 2022 2:10 AM |
Madame has had 4 people operate her after Wayland passed. I know 2 of them, There are some stories about Marlene who "inherited" Madame as a property from Wayland.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | November 6, 2022 2:40 AM |
@r31, " The Sweet Gum Head show bar."
Sweet Gum Head!?... Gurl, you go back in Atlanta farther than Miss Scarlett herself. I saw Waylon and Madame at the Woodruff Arts Center. Do you remember Ru Paul pedaling his ass around Midtown on his bicycle? Before they were famous, huh? 😂
by Anonymous | reply 33 | November 6, 2022 3:37 AM |
That's Jiffy in R25 not Madame in blackface. No need to get your bloomers in a twist r30

R31, Yes, I've been around for a long time, and I definitely remember Ru before fame hit her. She also did a few shows at the SGH. That was back when Ru was working at his cousin's auto garage as a day gig.

^ And I thought I was the oldest living Gay guy from Atlanta. When I first moved to Atlanta right out of College the Armorettes became my best friends. I hung with them at the softball games the whole first year I lived there

The club act sure was stale. They carted the same routine and jokes for 5 years or more
by Anonymous | reply 38 | November 6, 2022 5:13 PM |
I saw Wayland 5 days in a row at the Casbar Theater in the Sahara in the 80s. He did a different show each night. The culmination of the Friday show was the appearance of Miss Jiffy. Wayland was a treasure. Oh, and he performed barefoot.

The theme song for Madame's Place had the line "And at Madame's Place, she's a primetime queen!" ...
... which likely went over the head of every straight viewer. Of which there were few.

With her latest round of cosmetic improvements, Jane Fonda is starting to look "Madamesque." There should be a live-action movie about Madame, starring La Fonda.

A Madame movie starring M G or J would be good!
by Anonymous | reply 63 | November 7, 2022 3:28 AM |
I'm fascinated by these country-specific cultural icons that for whatever reason never went further than within their own country - when Raja did this on All Stars 7, everyone seemed to know who it was but British people were mystified - probably similar to when in the current Drag Race UK season a couple of the queens did a Mr Blobby tribute - all Brits would know who that was but I'm sure Americans or any other country would probably have never heard of it.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | November 7, 2022 10:41 AM |
Wayland had a uniquely Southern Gay charm about him that played well in the South, but like Jeff Foxworthy and his redneck bit, it probably would fall flat outside the US
by Anonymous | reply 65 | November 7, 2022 10:48 AM |
Jeff Foxworthy doesn't have ounce the charm Wayland Flowers had.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | November 7, 2022 10:50 AM |
^ Jeff appealed to a different southerner than Wayland 🙄
by Anonymous | reply 67 | November 7, 2022 10:57 AM |
Larry appealed to an even more "basic" southerner
by Anonymous | reply 68 | November 7, 2022 11:00 AM |
Before rednecks became political thanks to Trump they were funny, now they're just assholes 😠
by Anonymous | reply 69 | November 7, 2022 11:28 AM |
Larry The Cable Guy (does he even still have a career) may have appealed to rednecks, but he was neither a Southerner or a redneck. He was born and raised in the Great Plains state of Nebraska, in a prosperous middle class family. His act (especially his accent) is/was a complete sham.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | November 7, 2022 12:02 PM |
^ Most comedians are actors in a sense. Jeff Foxworthy was from a middle class Atlanta family. Hardly a redneck, but he understood them
by Anonymous | reply 71 | November 7, 2022 12:13 PM |
Jeff was hot, back in the day.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | November 7, 2022 12:23 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 73 | November 7, 2022 12:39 PM |
I remember him appearing on British TV a couple of times in the late 1970s, early 1980s. He was good.
Pretty sure it was the Des O'Connor show, which had massive ratings at the time (we only had 3 or 4 TV channels back then). Probably the UK equivalent of Jonny Carson.

Real question: were Waylon Flowers and Madame ever involved with The Muppets?
It seems logical she might have been a guest on The Muppet Show as they were both in the public eye around the same time.
I can’t find any evidence online, but I suspect Madame didn’t want anyone hogging the spotlight.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | November 7, 2022 1:19 PM |
^ I think Madame may have been a little too adult for the Muppets
by Anonymous | reply 76 | November 7, 2022 1:24 PM |
IMDB says he was an uncredited puppeteer on The Muppet Movie released in 1979.

My brother was part of a contingent of Las Vegas gay guys who all had HIV and AIDS and was good friends with Wayland who was one of the most helpful and supportive people when he first got his diagnosis. He spoke very highly of him. My brother outlived him by about three years.

My next door neighbor who worked at the publishing house that released this book when I was about 10 gave this to me as gift . I wish I still had it. It’s so funny I was just thinking about Flowers and Madame recently. Madonna looks like she went to the same surgeon as Madame by the way.
