Thirty-one Coffee Brands Ranked Worst to Best

Not surprised Maxwell House is near bottom. That dreck is one foul brew...

Made mistake of picking up a canister at Rite Aide year ago. Shelves were bare of anything else including Starbucks. It was on sale and had nothing in house to make my morning coffee.

Never again!

While normally cannot stand Starbucks coffee purchased at their shops, brewing their coffee at home or whatever from freshly ground beans is acceptable.

There are so many good local roasteries all over (that use beyond fair trade beans, even). Why not pick up a pound of beans, supporting a local business, and grind them fresh at home?

I love High Point. I drink it every day in the back of my limo, on the way to Tuesday Morning.

It's got FLAVAH!

Some of us are now on a budget. Maxwell House with milk and sweet n lo is absolutely fine.

I can't afford that 14 a lb. Kenyan blend anymore at Whole Foods. I need my 30 oz Maxwell House for $7.99 at Walgreens.

^^^ Sorry for the double post. Thankfully this place is free.

Putting in a shameless plug from my ALL TIME FAVORITE coffee purveyor. I've been purchasing this magnificent, rich, and smooth coffee for 2.5 years and they never disappoint. Harvest and roast twice a week, and ship either whole bean or ground via FedEx within two days.

You will not be sorry!

by Anonymousreply 8November 5, 2022 3:40 AM

Dunkin' is trash.

by Anonymousreply 9November 5, 2022 3:42 AM

Community Coffee is pretty good and won’t break the bank.

The coffee with chicory is good iced as well.

by Anonymousreply 10November 5, 2022 3:43 AM

A brick of that Cafe Busualdo shit was listed at number 7? You can get that at Dollar Tree for $1.25. Anyone ever try it?

by Anonymousreply 11November 5, 2022 3:43 AM

Bustelo is alright but El Pico is better in that category.

by Anonymousreply 12November 5, 2022 3:46 AM

Cafe Bustello is the only coffee I buy, unless I can't find it then I get Lavazza. I hate that Starbucks is listed highly. I hate that Green Mountain coffee roasters and new England coffee is pretty much all that is served here because I think they're both disgusting.

by Anonymousreply 13November 5, 2022 3:47 AM

Stumptown is surprisingly terrible in their stores, so I wouldn't bother with the beans.

Local roasteries, like local micro-brews often disappoint, R1.

Dunkin', Stumptown, McCafe, and Eight O'Clock are all higher in the list than they should be.

by Anonymousreply 16November 5, 2022 3:53 AM

There's got to be some kind of chemical they use in Eight O'Clock coffee. It has a different smell than just about any other coffee. It's nostalgic, but in the great span of good coffee, it doesn't hit anywhere near the mark.

I really liked Starbucks Spring Day Blend. Lovely taste, and it was wonderful with dessert.

by Anonymousreply 17November 5, 2022 3:55 AM

I like Cafe Bustelo but it doesn't last long. Even when making a pot a day, the bag goes stale about halfway through no matter what I do.

Lavazza (number 3 on that list) is my favorite. Their Perfetto dark roast and Crema e Gusto are the best. I often cut those with Lavazza Dek decaf which is fine but not great on its own.

For instant, American Nescafe is terrible, but if you can find it in an international store, Turkish or Greek Nescafe is delicious.

I also like Starbucks instant, the kind with the microgranules. I don't buy their ground except the Christmas blends.

by Anonymousreply 18November 5, 2022 3:56 AM

Am surprised Eight O'Clock Coffee ranked so low. That was my brand since college and beyond. Usually French Roast or Original. Lately tried their Italian Roast which wasn't too bad either.

by Anonymousreply 19November 5, 2022 3:56 AM

I would drink 8 o'clock before most on that list.

by Anonymousreply 20November 5, 2022 3:59 AM

Anyone else remember those huge coffee grinders at A&P supermarkets? Whenever us kids went along with Mother or someone else grocery shopping was always intrigued by how they ground coffee to order right there. Of course we kids were shooed away so couldn't get close.

Eight O'clock coffee was an A&P brand. At some point before their final disastrous bankruptcy A&P corporate sold Eight O'Clock coffee.

Also, I refuse to drink anything kpod shit. I got one when they were at the height of their popularity because my son gave it to me for mothers day. I never found one single pod I liked and got the one that you can fill yourself. I used CB and it still tasted like watery dogshit.

On the other end of the spectrum, I will drink just about ANY brand that is old school percolater-ed like my Nana had.

by Anonymousreply 22November 5, 2022 4:03 AM

Yeah baby!

Can still recall that heavenly smell of fresh ground coffee. Since was still a kid that beverage wasn't allowed for many more years. But loved the smell never the less, both from coffee being ground and when it was being made into perked coffee. You knew it was time to get up when smell of fresh brewed coffee made it's way upstairs to the bedrooms.

Or substitute nice freshly made hot donuts.

Seems like back in day in NYC and many other urban areas there were always places to find good coffee and nice fresh donuts. Just the thing when breaking the night, going into work morning, or working late...

Intelligensia dark roast!

by Anonymousreply 28November 5, 2022 4:13 AM

My old man insisted on several things home wise. One of them was fresh hot coffee first thing in AM. If that man didn't have a good cup of morning Joe his whole day was fucked, and we all paid the price....

Am like that as well. If don't have my morning coffee, and or it isn't good there is going to be Hell to pay.

I once interviewed for an editorial job about 5 years ago and I found out during the first round of interviews that the company only provided Stumptown coffee. It was one of the role’s selling points as it was brought up three times in the hour I was at their offices. “We only brew Stumptown here…”

Like Tesla cars, you can tell how much of an asshole someone is if they profess their undying loyalty to Stumptown coffee.

That said, I’ve never tried it and I never will. I’m fine with my cheap Dunkin Donuts beans from Stater Bros.

Farmer Brothers is outstanding, but sadly, only available to restaurants.

Starbucks is horrifying.

Nabbed a case of Farmer Bros coffee of eBay years ago for a very good price, it was brilliant.

Sadly haven't found stuff again at anywhere near reasonable prices, even on eBay. There's lots of Farmer Bros on that site, but prices are bit too steep.

I grew up in pretentious coffee-land Portland OR, and I am (surprisingly) not a coffee snob—either that, or it’s been beaten out of me with the absurd proliferation of indie coffee roasters in the northwest. Same with breweries. I’ve heard it all, tried a lot, and maybe I’m just jaded.

Some of the local roasters are good, and I do think Stumptown is fine, but the unimaginatively-named “Portland Coffee Roasters” has some of the worst coffee I’ve ever tasted. Horrendous. And it’s expensive as hell. Ristretto Roasters had good coffee I thought, but they closed up shop some time ago. I am willing to pay a higher price for a good flavor here and there, but I’m also willing to drink Starbucks, Cafe Bustelo, or even Folgers—I’m not that picky, and all of those are decent IMO. There might be a nostalgia factor for me with Folgers specifically because it reminds me of my grandparents, but I honestly don’t think it’s bad coffee.

by Anonymousreply 38November 5, 2022 6:34 AM

Community Coffee is the worst coffee followed by Starbucks. Many brands use the cheaper robusta beans and they are awful.

by Anonymousreply 39November 5, 2022 6:39 AM

To be honest, Folgers SMELLS the best to me when it's brewing. I wonder if that's childhood nostalgia or Folgers developed the perfect smelling coffee yet sacrificing taste.

At one time A&P brand Eight O Clock coffee ☕️ and their other varieties were considered high quality. Years ago Consumer Reports would put their coffee at the top of their ratings.

by Anonymousreply 42November 5, 2022 12:13 PM

Consumer Reports gave the nod to "8 O'Clock" before you had the proliferation of roasters that exist now. It was better than Maxwell House, Chase and Sanborn, etc.

by Anonymousreply 43November 5, 2022 12:17 PM

What’s wrong with Stumptown? It’s fine. Holler Mountain is a nice mild blend.

They give away their biases in their review of Equal Exchange by revealing their priority is on an agenda, rather than coffee quality.

Did they note their approach to the test? Articles that purport to rank things without providing at least a cursory overview of the methodology are always suspect. Somehow, I do not believe this was a blind taste test in which all the coffees were prepared identically and tasted without knowing which brand was which.

by Anonymousreply 59November 5, 2022 1:05 PM

Stumptown tastes watery--like the kind of swill that passed for restaurant and take-out coffee pre-Starbucks.

That's so sad about the decline of Yuban.

My late mother was a coffee addict who would get headaches if she didn't get her java jones; she could drink a strong cup at midnight, then fall asleep five minutes later. So Mama knew her coffee. Yuban was her favorite, but back in the day it wasn't available in south Louisiana, so in addition to the pounds of unshelled black walnuts and pecans my grandma and Mama's baby sister would always put 3 huge cans of Yuban in the care packages they regularly sent from South Carolina.

In between shipments Mama made do with Louisiana-made Community and Morning Treat coffees, along with A&P's Eight-O'Clock coffee.

Ahhhh, so many memories.

McDonald's is not good coffee, but it's not bad coffee either. It's like water in that you don't think about it either way unless there's a problem with it.

How Starbucks convinced people that over-roasted, burned coffee is "strong" good coffee is amazing to me.

by Anonymousreply 71November 5, 2022 1:30 PM

CVS Gold Emblem brand Colombian is actually pretty good. It's often on sale for $3.99. Eight O'Clock Colombian Peaks is okay. Melitta used to make one called Blanc et Noir that I liked, but I never see it anymore. New England is the weakest I've tried, and it's too expensive for what it is.

by Anonymousreply 76November 5, 2022 1:57 PM

Agree that local roasters can be best; but when buying from a store my go tos are:

1. Peet’s Ethiopian Supernatural - perfect winter coffee on a cold day;

2. Stumptown’s Holler Mountain - an anytime winner; and

3. Fresh Illy or Bustello in a little Bialetti Expresso pot for a spur of the moment shot.

My grandma goes fucking berserk when I have the audacity to ask for or use one of her Starbucks grounds filter pods. by Anonymousreply 83November 5, 2022 2:23 PM

I like Case Study coffee in Portland.

by Anonymousreply 84November 5, 2022 2:40 PM

Stumptown is about 50% more expensive than Peet's! It would have to be incredibly good to be worth it.

by Anonymousreply 85November 5, 2022 2:43 PM

I don't drink coffee, but my wife does. When I want to get her a gift, I order coffee because she's a bit of a snob. The favorite is one from Mariposa Coffee Company, called Miner 49er. Then, she likes Starbucks' Casa Cielo, which is apparently only available beginning in the fall. And, finally, Peets' Major Dickinson. I am a plebe and drink Diet Coke, but she seems to have good taste.

I will add that I also purchased the MoccaMaster (TM) coffee brewing system and it is known for super-heating the water that goes in over the beans to make the coffee better. I know I sound insane, but she doesn't ask for much and she does love her coffee.

by Anonymousreply 86November 5, 2022 2:47 PM

Counterculture Coffee is like $17 a bag now but it’s the best I’ve ever had. They have two varieties that have “fruit” tasting notes and that’s what I prefer. Not sure how far their market reach is.

Living in NYC, I have been disappointed more by local roasters (especially Brooklyn — I forget the full name) than I’ve been disappointed by, say, McDonald’s. It’s really a crapshoot.

A cheaper, good alternative to Counterculture is Equal Exchange’s African Roots or Ethiopian, in the red bags. They tend to be around $11-12, sometimes on sale.

by Anonymousreply 89November 5, 2022 3:00 PM

by Anonymousreply 105November 5, 2022 4:02 PM

It's all in making it.

I used to order German, Finnish, and Austrian coffee brands from enjoybettercoffee.com I preferred them to American brands.

On a tighter budget now. i started getting Melitta in the local supermarket and "Fair Trade" at Aldi's. The "Fair Trade" is from Germany. It comes in a 17 ounce brick, and it's like the coffee I was getting from the above site.

I brew a pot each morning. I use a Cuisinart. It's all in how you make it. Trial and error.

And I add crumbled egg shells to the grinds!

Coffee with chicory is drank throughout the South not just New Orleans but I guess is especially popular there. My relatives in border South drank it and so do I . Question - in the opening of the commerical, there's a cute guy with blond hair and ice blue eyes playing the 'barrista' . WHO IS HE ?

Then there's the guy as the romantic hero at the end with dark hair and beard who yells out "With Italian Passion!" WHO IS HE ? I think they might be the same actor - their faces kind of looked the same.

In fact, Darphur Oprhan turned up his nose at Dunkin Donuts coffee and ate dirt instead.

by Anonymousreply 120November 5, 2022 5:08 PM

R120 but what if the gardener is easily accessible and hot?

by Anonymousreply 121November 5, 2022 5:12 PM

I'm interested in finding a good dark roast that costs less than gold, so, I enjoy the discussion that Op has fostered with this post. Thanks, Op.

Unfortunately, this particular list is suspect. There was no taste-testing; no Consumer Reports-style testing, etc. It's just the [bold]'opinion' of one WRITER with no apparent expertise[/bold] other than drinking coffee (and being a waiter, I guess). He writes, "This list highlights where well known coffee brands stand, in our humble estimation."

But, he doesn't give any info on how he arrived at this ranking. Did he personally drink each of these coffees? He never states that; so I doubt if he did taste each of them, let alone drink an entire pot, or even a cup of each.

The author (Brandon Rich) seems to be making his living writing 'the best whatever' lists, which I find deceptive. (Examples of his articles in just the past month: 9 Best Sleeping Pads for Camping of 2023 {Comfy & Easy to Pack}; The Best Bear Canisters to Keep Food Safe; 9 Best Portable Space Heaters for Indoor & Outdoor Use {2023}; The Best Wool Socks That Stand Up To The Cold; The 5 Best First Aid Kits for Every Scenario; etc.) So, he's just another 'writer' making a living spouting his opinion as though he is an expert in whatever subject. (He always includes the word 'best' in his articles' headlines. It's probably done so that his articles will show up in searches, but it's misleading, in my opinion.)

Anyway, perhaps a poll of favorite coffees of Dl'ers might be interesting. (I don't want to intrude on your coffee post purview, Op.)

by Anonymousreply 122November 5, 2022 5:15 PM

R122 Yeah, good point. A lot of these lists are just bullshitting.

I would at minimum expect a blind tasting set up.

I've had a lot of the coffee that was on the list, and to paraphrase Billy Joel, the good ones weren't always good, and the bad ones aren't as bad as they seem. Peet's Major Dickason's Blend is my favorite.

by Anonymousreply 133November 5, 2022 6:03 PM

Caffeine is the only required ingredient in my black, hot, strong coffee, straight-up.

Beans ground, whole, chiseled, cheap or pricey, are merely a carrier for caffeine, my drug of choice, my eye-opener.

I'm in happy recovery from many substance addictions, but caffeine will have to be pried from my cold, dead, hand.

by Anonymousreply 134November 5, 2022 6:41 PM

I dislike Sbux's hot instore coffee.

Our Jura at home grinds whole beans to brew and while we get various dark roasts, we will usually buy a big 2 lb French roast bag of Starbucks at Costco to kind of stretch out our stock. It's OK.

[quote] A serving of regular drip coffee actually has more caffeine than a shot of espresso. According to the USDA, one 1.5-ounce shot of espresso has around 90-100 milligrams of caffeine. Your standard cup of drip coffee? That clocks in at up to 128 milligrams, making it the better wake-up call for those rough mornings.

Maybe it's the acidity of the coffee that messes up your stomach?

And if you own a Keurig and are paying for the pods, you're wasting SO much money not to mention they aren't recyclable. There are 25 pods to a box and you're paying like, $18 for it. Amazon sells reusable pods and tiny filters for them so you can get a huge bag of coffee and pack your own pods and you'll be amazed at how much money you save. But make sure the pod you get match your machine.

Unfortunately, Stella D'Oro has been shitty for years. Their greedy CEO and investors moved the operation from the Bronx, where some workers had been there over 30 years. They all lost their jobs and the cookies don't even taste the same.

Not sure what state Stella D'Oro moved to, but their cookies now taste quite awful. The packages are much smaller as are the actual cookie sizes. This product is basically not the same.

Darker roasted coffee such as French, Italian, espresso usually have lower caffeine content than lighter. Thus going for a medium or even light roast brew can actually pack more of a caffeine punch than say a cup of French roast.

Moka pot coffee (which isn't truly espresso) along with actual shots of espresso seem to pack more of jolt because they are concentrated (higher ratio of coffee to water).

One only want one or two cups of coffee ditch usual vacuum pot method and go for moka pot. With right grind and done property resulting brew will have you wide awake...

Instant coffee is almost universally made from Robusta beans. Depending upon one's preference and other factors that is either good or bad.

Robusta coffee was dominate in USA either alone or blended for years. Nearly all mass or supermarket brands are either mostly Robusta or maybe a blend.

Robusta coffee tends to be lower in acidity which is a plus. It also packs more caffiene than Arabica, which depending upon one's tastes is either good or bad.

by Anonymousreply 178November 6, 2022 12:06 PM

Maxwell House coffee once was made from a blend of robusta and arabica beans. They've since switched to arabica, but stuff still tastes like swill IMHO.

Folgers OTOH still is sticking with mostly robusta beans in their coffee.

When people complain Starbucks and other higher end or whatever coffee does a number on their insides, it is probably the acidity that comes with arabica beans causing mischief.

Many chefs, cooks, or anyone else preparing a recipe that calls for coffee or espresso used powdered instant.

Usually recipes only call for less than a cup of coffee or espresso. Why make a whole or half pot just for such small amount?

Also by using powdered instant coffee or espresso the brew is always fresh. This rather than using say stale left over coffee.

After about thirty minutes freshly brewed coffee starts to go off.

OK, DL Whiz Kid Coffee Mavens -- answer me this.

Coffee is a plant. Coffee farmers grow their coffee bushes in varying soils. Climatic conditions from year-to-year affect fruit quality and size. Various inputs are required to grow a successful crop -- water, fertilizer, pesticides, pruning, timely and constant fruit picking -- all to say the flavor of the fruit and the "beans" inside can vary from year-to-year, field-to-field, etc.

So how do coffee purveyors claim to have consistent coffee attributes (i.e., the flavor/aroma/taste) in every unit of what they sell?

Doesn't seem possible to me.

by Anonymousreply 205November 6, 2022 3:42 PM

Well, R205, Starbucks over-roasts (ie: burns) the beans and calls it "branding".

by Anonymousreply 206November 6, 2022 3:47 PM
