MSNBC host Joy Reid claims Americans had NEVER heard the word 'inflation' until the GOP 'taught it to them'

[quote]Speaking with her network colleague Nicole Wallace, Reid said the 'only people I've ever heard use the word inflation are journalists and economists.'

This is just embarrassing.

by Anonymousreply 1November 4, 2022 8:25 PM

Anyone with a high school education should know the term.

by Anonymousreply 2November 4, 2022 8:35 PM

How did this dumb bitch get to be on TV?

by Anonymousreply 3November 7, 2022 5:58 AM

What a hysterically stupid person.

By the way she looks like a sad Patti Labelle impersonator.

by Anonymousreply 4November 7, 2022 6:03 AM

What a retard.

by Anonymousreply 5November 7, 2022 6:04 AM

Amazing no one on her staff or the network tried to stop her from making a fool of herself.

by Anonymousreply 6November 7, 2022 6:06 AM

That tells a lot about the quality of her staff. And perhaps the network is allowing her to make an ass of herself so they can get rid of her.

by Anonymousreply 7November 7, 2022 6:08 AM

To be fair it probably is new word to her

Joy Reid has the intelligence of a stool sample.

by Anonymousreply 14November 7, 2022 7:10 AM

I'm sorry. I must admit I'm not at all familiar with the term.

Joyless Greed and MSDNC are attempting to do more gaslighting on their audience.

This Tuesday, the election results will show that The People understand…and that is why Democrats will lose their majorities with both the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate.

Given all this…it is wise to laugh at Joyless Greed.

It is even wiser to not tune in MSDNC and Joyless Greed.

by Anonymousreply 18November 7, 2022 9:07 AM

😂😂 R18.

by Anonymousreply 19November 7, 2022 9:12 AM

I think she is actually correct. Most Americans have heard of "higher prices", but not inflation. Those that have associate it with 1920s Germany and photos of people with wheelbarrows full of money- something that happened to someone else. The vast majority of Americans are complete ignorant of economics.

by Anonymousreply 20November 7, 2022 9:15 AM

That's idiotic, R20. I promise you Americans have heard of inflation (especially if they were around in the late1970s). Nobody associates it with Weimar Germany!

by Anonymousreply 21November 7, 2022 9:23 AM

watch her space to see if she gets reprimanded for seething about tiffany cross’ firing.

by Anonymousreply 22November 7, 2022 9:45 AM

Weird. She's two years older than me, and I remember it from the '70s. I remember Nixon's WIN (Whip Inflation Now.) This is a terrible take.

All this said, it was the policies of both the Trump and Biden administration that brought this current bout of it about, and Biden's been doing something about it.

I'd vote Blue a million times in aid of saving democracy, rather tan voting for scrmbags.

by Anonymousreply 23November 7, 2022 9:54 AM

R21, I am 64. I barely remember the inflation of the 1970s. My parents did not talk about it. I remember the "energy crisis". The people who really remember the " inflation" of the 1970s are in their 70s and 80s. The inflation of the 1970s is not taught in schools, the inflation during Weimar Germany is taught in schools. You may disagree with me about the 1970s, but the notion that *nobody* associates it with Weimar Germany! is just hyperbole.

by Anonymousreply 24November 7, 2022 9:54 AM

How does this 'phobe still have a program? She and her goiter ought to go over to The View, she'd do better there.

It's on video, R26.

by Anonymousreply 27November 7, 2022 10:07 AM

👆Joy Reid apologist @ R24. You really need to stop. It's embarrassing. Anyone with an IQ over 70 knows what inflation is.

by Anonymousreply 28November 7, 2022 10:07 AM

I think people just give her a pass, because she says stupid things every day on her show. It’s just expected.

by Anonymousreply 29November 7, 2022 10:08 AM

Why did she steal Nene's wig?

by Anonymousreply 30November 7, 2022 10:08 AM

R20, bless your heart. Did you stay in mother's basement? I am... substantially younger than you... but old enough to remember canned goods at the grocery stores having two or three price stickers if they took more than a few weeks to move from stock to out-the-door in the 70s.

by Anonymousreply 31November 7, 2022 10:13 AM

[quote]I think she is actually correct. Most Americans have heard of "higher prices", but not inflation.

You're as stupid as Joy Reid is.

Isn't it the Biden administration that recently enacted the "INFLATION Reduction Act "?

by Anonymousreply 32November 7, 2022 10:21 AM

[quote]but old enough to remember canned goods at the grocery stores having two or three price stickers .

Yes, but did you know it as inflation or just higher prices?

[quote] Anyone with an IQ over 70 knows what inflation is.

Since we are talking about the majority of Americans, do you have a point?

[quote] Isn't it the Biden administration that recently enacted the "INFLATION Reduction Act "?

That is irrelevant. The GOP has been screaming about inflation since stimulus payment were first discussed.

As much as dislike Joy Reid, think this is a misplaced case of playing gottcha. Her argument as in the article:

[quote]that the word 'inflation' is not a standard part of the 'normal lexicon' of Americans, and that most people using it learned it from political operatives during this midterm cycle.

is correct. It is not part of the normal lexicon. We have not had major inflation in 40 years. It is like saying that Polio has not been part of the normal lexicon when discussing the reemergence of Polio. It doesn't mean that nobody has heard the word. It means that the word has been an abstract idea not a reality.

by Anonymousreply 33November 7, 2022 10:39 AM

^Okay, Joy 🙄

by Anonymousreply 34November 7, 2022 10:48 AM

Some of yall are really playing thick if you think inflation was not a "thing" until this election cycle. I have heard it from as far back as my teens circa 2004. Though I do have a better understanding of it now. I guess Roy Reid is no longer a journalist but a media personality, which is nothing wrong with that. But she is no longer a journalist if she's going to be this one sided and basically behave like a democratic publicist.

There are no more Dan Rathers, Tom Brokaws, Barbara Walter's of the world because people have picked political parties over their fkin job.

by Anonymousreply 35November 7, 2022 10:49 AM

Joy Reid**

by Anonymousreply 36November 7, 2022 10:49 AM

R26 I almost wanted to believe that too but it actually did happen. She said those things. Maybe she doesn't care about integrity or respect anymore.

by Anonymousreply 38November 7, 2022 10:58 AM

by Anonymousreply 39November 7, 2022 11:03 AM

Growing up in the 70's, I heard that term a lot. You couldn't get away from it. The evening news were always reporting about " inflation".

by Anonymousreply 40November 7, 2022 11:08 AM

R33 "Inflation" is an entirely normal word. It's not more outlandish than "religion" or "assume". I'm not a native speaker and my vocabulary is limited in comparison to many of my friends but his is absolutely ridiculous. Plus, everyone should know what terms like inflation or deflation or embargo etc. mean. It's the baseline for being able to participate in political discourse.

by Anonymousreply 41November 7, 2022 11:11 AM

Some might speculate that Reid is possibly trying to present an 'authentic' black perspective. . . "authentic" as in a racist caricature. There is persuasive reason to do so in black entertainment and media to give such a minstrel performance. . . it buys social credibility. It's something one might note of a number of performers of the last 20 or so years that come from reasonably educated, middle class or higher, suburban backgrounds that try to pump up the blackitude. . . and try to force themselves into a role outside of their experience.

It not only sells better to black audiences but also more likely to receive more opportunities from crackers than if they were reserved and well spoken. The only latitude given for this is either being foreign born/raised or gay.

by Anonymousreply 45November 7, 2022 12:21 PM

She's a moron if she said that.

Inflation has been a significant part of the American lexicon since the 1970s when interest rates were so comically high that it would boggle the minds of most people today. Fixed interest rate mortgages were over 11% in 1979.

She fundamentally lacks any historical perspective if she doesn't recognize that the discussion around inflation occurs virtually every day. Now, if she's claiming Americans are financially illiterate, that's a different topic.

by Anonymousreply 46November 7, 2022 12:49 PM

[quote]This Tuesday, the election results will show that The People understand…and that is why Democrats will lose their majorities with both the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate.

by Anonymousreply 47November 7, 2022 1:03 PM

[quote]I promise you Americans have heard of inflation (especially if they were around in the late1970s).

Anyone old enough to remember inflation in the 1970s is well into their 50s and older. Inflation was almost constant from 1969 to 1982, but I'd say you had to be about 10 years old in 1982 or older to really remember it and know what it is. That's being generous. Recent news articles about her viewership numbers show she doesn't have a lot of viewers in the 50 and over range, so she wasn't talking to you 60-somethings in the first place.

Mostly, though, the complaints about this mistake are driven by the usual rightwing nutjob suspects, which is why this thread is full of comments like "she's just playing dumb to be authentically black, since most blacks are stupid" and "this is why Republicans will win."

by Anonymousreply 48November 7, 2022 2:39 PM

I think her comments were about the generally ill-informed nature of most Americans. When I bring up things that Trump did when President or even things that happened a year ago, I get blank stares. There's an entire generation of under 50s that don't know of inflation because they didn't experience it directly. But then you all probably knew that, you just want to rag on the black lady.

Why is this crazy bitch still on tv? Who could watch her knowing she thinks we are as fucking stupid ad she is???

by Anonymousreply 51November 7, 2022 3:20 PM

I know some of you pretend to not like Joy Reid because of her "homophobic" remarks, but let us all not pretend that the media doesn't play the buzzword game when democrats are in power. Words like the deficit, the debt ceiling, inflation, always get trotted out when a democrat is in the White House. For some reason none of that stuff seems to ever matter when republicans are in charge. So we keep playing that tax and spend democrat /fiscally conservative republican game - which is outdated and really doesn't apply to either party any longer.

by Anonymousreply 52November 7, 2022 3:28 PM

Worth noting that this Tory shitrag never bothers to link the video with what she actually said. And you're fucking crazy if you think I'm going to trust their misguided paraphrasing.

by Anonymousreply 53November 7, 2022 3:43 PM

Does anyone notice that she can’t pronounce ANYONE’s name? Like she literally gets several names wrong each episode. I think she’s honestly just stupid.

by Anonymousreply 54November 7, 2022 5:46 PM

Speaking of cultural appropriation, Joy's blonde hair. I guess that term only goes one way, eh Joy?

by Anonymousreply 55November 7, 2022 7:15 PM

by Anonymousreply 57November 7, 2022 8:48 PM

Lol she basically said the things you bitches say about Ann Coulter and Lindsay Graham on the regular. But in her position she should know better. She must have some serious clout at msnbc because I just knew the gay mafia would have her permanently canceled.

R24 I'm 64, also. I remember the inflation of the 1970s very well. I was 16 during Ford's WIN (Whip Inflation Now) nonsense. I don't remember what my parents talked about. I watched the news.

[quote]Ford had taken office in August 1974 amidst one of the worst economic crises in US history, marked by high unemployment and inflation rising to 12.3% that year following the 1973 oil crisis.

Inflation continued under Carter, who was the first president I voted for.
