Standing ovations used to be relatively rare and reserved for the truly deserving ones. Now they're handed out like candy with all four acting winners at the oscars getting standing ovations. Emma Stone really? Which ones stick out in your mind?
Undeserved Standing Ovations

It's really bad in the theater. I've been to community theatre and high school productions where the most untalented people I've ever seen get standing ovations for, I guess, getting through the scene/song.

And yes, she's got something to say about audiences: "Every single thing, there's a standing ovation. There is over-enthusiasm on the part of the audience, you know, who has absolutely no way to judge the thing to begin with.
"I went to the ballet, maybe now 10 years ago, and I was shocked by the audience. So, the second the first dancer put their foot on the stage, the audience erupted in cheers. I was shocked by this, OK? It used to be, if Baryshnikov managed to hang in the air for maybe, say, a full 15 minutes, there'd be like [mimics polite "golf clap" applause].

Totally agree. I've only given about 5 out of the (say) 1,000 men I've had sex with.

R2 and yet, she probably gets undeserved standing ovations too.

Unoriginal, cliched and contrived screenplay that ultimately makes little sense

A WOMAN SHOULD BE ABLE TO OVATE IN ANY POSITION SHE WANTS.
I remember when before the change I would need to hang upside down to get the pain down. And, and....
What?
Never mind.

Octavia Spencer winning an Oscar for THE HELP.
Her first nomination, too.
And at that point, she had only had bit roles in films/TV shows.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | November 4, 2022 1:42 AM |
I'm not saying her win was undeserving, just the standing O was a bit much.

“Hero” gets bandied about all too often these days too.

R12: You know it's the law that every black winner gets a standing ovation.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | November 4, 2022 1:49 AM |
actually, R14 the Academy is applauding itself for awarding a person of color

About 15 years ago, I went to hear the Chicago Symphony perform Mahler 2. It was an excellent performance, but nothing outside of their scope or competency. Orchestra Hall erupted in cheers and a standing ovation, I chose to remain seated while clapping. On my way out a woman approached me and told me that I was rude and disrespectful to the orchestra for remaining seated. I blinked and kept on walking right out to the sidewalk on Michigan Avenue.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | November 4, 2022 2:01 AM |
R16 why did you blink? Did she attempt to slug you?

I can understand high school and community theater standing ovations; the audience is primarily composed of family members and friends.
I went to " King Kong, the Musical" on Christmas Eve, so you know the audience was almost 100% tourist. At curtain call, there was tepid applause for the entire cast, including the leads. However, when the Kong puppet entered with the cadre of puppeteers, the audience erupted in cheers and a well-deserved standing ovation. The lead thought that the ovation was for he, as she took another deep bow. But, her character was so unlikeable, people would never have stood for her. It restored my faith in the discerning audience.

I can understand the one given for Julianne Moore when she won the Best Actress Oscar. We knew the film was not that good but she had given so many great performances in the past that she deserved to be honored by the Academy.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | November 4, 2022 2:21 AM |
In my experience standing ovations have unfortunately become the norm. A string quartet plays in a local concert series, they get a standing ovation. I've given up resisting because it makes me look churlish: the value of applause is debased.

Sort of on the same subject, isn't everyone a GOAT these days?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | November 4, 2022 2:36 AM |
She got a standing ovation because she's Black.

I had no problem with Anthony Hopkins winning the oscar and getting an ovation for playing Hannibal Lecter.

Julianne Moore, seriously

Anyone who participated in that Standing Ovation is a SHIT.

I went to a Baryshnikov performance years ago. He was in a real snit that night, I suppose some kind of artistic temper and it showed in his performance which was terrible. The people who were sitting directly in front of me were some of the only ones to give him a standing ovation but I didn’t realize what they were doing. I jumped up too so I could see over their heads. I felt pretty stupid when my friends gave me the side eye looks and I clued in.

What are they going to do on Broadway to distinguish between Great and Better than Average: cartwheels in the aisles?
Riotous, sustained standing ovations this week for both “Into The Woods” and “Kimberly Akimbo.”

At the Oscars pretty much all the actors get one nowadays. It used to be rare.
The only recent one I can think of that didn't get one was Jared Leto but that was because he was in the front row and ran to the stage so fast there wasn't time for one.
tip: if you win take your time getting to the stage--they'll stand.

Slappy Will Smith

So long as I win the most.

The worst thing in the world for actors is to have a picture of them not standing for a black actor. Career suicide.

I remember several years ago at the Oscars when John Legend performed his winning song from the MLK biopic SELMA. He received a standing ovation, of course, but the very cringey part was Chris Pine and others standing there clapping for a full minute with tears in their eyes. Please.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | November 4, 2022 2:14 PM |
and is it me or have John Legend and his insufferable wife fallen off the map?

The standing ovations got ridiculous in the 2010s
Matthew McConaughey - just because he all of a sudden became a serious actor doesn't mean he should get a standing ovation.
Sandra Bullock - see Matthew McConaughey
Patricia Arquette
Eddie Redmayne
Emma Stone - to this day I don't understand why she got an entire room to stand up for her.
Rami Malek - probably the razziest performance of the 2010s got a standing o is hilarious.
Will Smith - I don't need to say anything
Jessica Chastain - see Rami Malek
Ariana DeBose

The most senseless part of that screenplay is the climax. Because, ummm, what are we supposed to think happens next? No major repercussions for all the destruction?

It’s one of the reasons I never watch award shows. So much clap for so much pap.
