Was that a saying that they then made into a song and movie or did the song originate it?
I Never Promised You a Rose Garden

no - the expression existed before the song.

Schizophrenia
Split Personality

The saying came before the book though right? I think the song came before the book.

I love that song. The book was okay. I think I was too young to read it and that's why I can't appreciate it much.

The novel was one reason I became a mental health nurse.

maybe the expression was a variation of bed of roses which was first found in Christopher Marlowe's The Passionate Shepherd To His Love published in 1599.

R3 Schizophrenia is not “split personality” … (Dissociative Identity Disorder)

That was my grandma's favorite country song.

Roses are a lot of work. Hilling for winter, black spot in the growing season. Some promise.

Eve said it to Adam after she took a bite of the apple.

It's in the Bible.
In many, many places.

The song was one reason I became a mental health patient.

Watch what you promise! Global warming may reduce the number of rose gardens!

The movie was OK too. Good role Kathleen Quinlan did well in.
I often tell myself, "No one promised me a rose garden, which is good because that ain't what I've got."

R5 Me, too. I was 15 when I read it. I should try it again. Never saw the movie but remember the song.

Who is the person making the statement? Who is the "I" -- a parent? a friend?

Thank you, R16, I haven't laughed so hard in months.

That makes me feel GREAT, r21. It really does. You’ve now made my day.

The film is quite good even if the portrayals of the mental patients are over the top and or campy particularly Susan Tyrell and Martine Bartlett. Quinlan is excellent. I never read the book.

I never promised you a rose garden! Saturday, 24th week in ordinary time – Luke 8:4-15
sounds more like something Eve would have said to Adam
