I agree. Winona’s personality is appealing and there’s something about her I can’t put my finger on that makes her seem to stand out. I’ve always thought Jennifer Connolly looked like an average pretty girl with no spark.

Winona was pretty but not beautiful with a unique personality. Jennifer (before the eating disorder and nose job) was the most beautiful actress of the post-Hollywood era. It’s such a shame she ruined her looks.

Winona was very pretty but even at her most famous, it wasn't so much about her looks as it was a certain quality she possessed. While not a trained actress, she had a natural magnetism- a combo of coolly disaffected indie girl with startling, childlike vulnerability. It was an arresting combination and at her height, the camera loved her. It's unfair to put her next to Connelly in still photos because Winona comes to life *on film*.

Connelly is like the inverse scenario. Stunning bone structure- a technical knock out. But there's something so.....*dead* about her. Joyless. The lights on but nobody's home....unless she's allowed to play a hungry depressive. Then she's decent. This anemic quality renders her- for me-really unattractive.

It's unforgivable to be *that* beautiful AND married to Paul Bettany... and still always seem like you're five minutes away from climbing into the bathtub with a toaster.

Fun fact : Connelly had a slightly softer look when she was younger but was clearly after a more editorial silhouette... so she got: 1.) A nose job and 2.) a breast reduction. I wonder if she regrets it now as *very* gaunt 50 year old?

Connelly was gorgeous back when she had more meat on her bones and before she cut her tits off. In the Rocketeer she was stunning. Wynona was always wispy.

Demi Moore was at least as beautiful as Winona, she just had more of a mainstream appeal. Despite her rough origins, young Demi could also have an East Coast preppy look like Jennifer Connelly, but she was rarely styled that way.

You seem to have a reading comprehension problem.

Connelly hasn't had a nose job but her face did slim down when she lost the baby fat. Same thing happened to me.

She also had those huge tits til she had her first child then sadly they did what many women's breasts do after pregnancy and nursing - they deflated. You can push them up somewhat in a push up bra but the lush roundness is not coming back. Nature can be cruel to those it depends upon to propagate the species. And that's just one thing pregnancy does to a body.

I read an article in the 90s and in it, this huge Hollywood producer had a huge poster of Connelly in his office as the glorification of the ideal woman. Now that is a fan. I was glad when she finally got a chance to shine in some roles and be recognized for some fine quiet work and not just her looks.

I don't buy the pregnancy making her tits smaller thing because the rest of her became emaciated as well. Her legs look like toothpicks and she has absolutely no ass anymore - she was curvy all over in prior years. There was an older thread on the DL from one of her friends (allegedly) that claimed she did have a severe eating disorder. And she absolutely had a nose job. Her nose became half as wide at some point in the early 2000s.

You're high OP. Jennifer is one of the most beautiful white woman of all time. She maintained her beauty until his middle age until very recently. Winona was very pretty and still is. Overrated is Julia Roberts and Jennifer Aniston.

R39 that clip throws into relief how much more accessible to audiences Liv Tyler is as an actress compared to both Noni & Jennifer. That's not at all to say she's more intelligent or talented--she's their same level, really, the model/It Girl beauty masquerading as a thespian--but to me she comes across onscreen with a much more human and sympathetic quality than either, for some reason. Perhaps because she smiles with her whole face & body, and is a generous open scene partner who's less aware of the camera. I care more about the fate and the goings-on of Liv's characters moreso than the other two.

I think she should have gone much further after House of Sand and Fog but then I only saw her in supporting roles like Little Children which was an excellent film if I remember correctly. Top Gun 2 is really not a great movie and her part doesn’t add much to it, typical girlfriend role- I bet Kelly McGillis didn’t lose any sleep over being snubbed in the end. Connelly really has so much potential but is sadly under used perhaps she just doesn’t need the work so much.

As a Gen x with plenty of “straight guy friends” per an earlier post that claimed straight guys loved Ryder - not a single one thought anything of Ryder at all. I don’t see it either and never did. She just appealed to some people who liked the quirky, waify, wide-eyed pixie type.

I liked Winona a lot in movies though, but to suggest she was some world class classic beauty and compared with Connelly, or even Demi for that matter, sounds so odd to me and surprising. In fact the whole idea of men swooning over Winona Ryder is a completely new one to me. I’m perplexed. Even with the pics someone else keeps posting of her to espouse her as a great beauty, I’m scratching my head over this one.

It seems unlikely that any GenXer didn't know at least a couple of guys in high school who had the hots for Winona Ryder. This idea that straight guys only like the sexy chicks and are uninterested in any other woman who is "merely pretty" or just "cool" is completely inaccurate.

Winona was definitely considered attractive to straight men. She was thin with big, expressive eyes and a pretty face and had a shy girlish quality. Why would straight men not like that? You don't need huge tits and hips and dress like a slut to attract male attention. Any type of femininity, youthfulness and physical fitness is appealing.

It's also funny when you think about it. Many glorified sex symbols aren't the most beautiful women or men but simply either charismatic or willing to sexually objectify themselves. You can tell a beautiful person is beautiful even when they lack charisma and dress conservatively. Jennifer could wear a burlap sack and still be considered beautiful.
