I was in love with the character who I thought was a closeted gay actor before they hooked him up with Tigra in the mid-80s. Now not so much.
His best run was around Avengers #158 & the West Coast Avengers limited series in '84 (a knockoff idea of DC's Teen Titans West from 1977 from "The House Of Ideas").
The guy looks nothing like him. Bad casting all around He'll confuse part-time fans with Power Man who has similar powers =

The recent trend of “black washing” fictional characters who were originally white has really gotten out of control.
It’s just more woke virtue signaling and the type mainstream anti-whiteness that has proliferated in Hollywood and the media since 2020.
What’s so wrong with keeping white fictional characters white? Or how about change them to Asian or Hispanic for a change? As small as this may seem to some, it’s an example of what’s driving many white moderates AND Hispanics (who get only a fraction of representation as blacks despite being a larger percentage of the US population) to the right.

They made Namor (marvel's evil aquaman) Latino for the movies R7. He's being played by actor Tenoch Huerta who is a Mexican national.
BTW, it's way easier to change a characters "race" for a movie than it is to create a whole new character, make it successful within the existing comics world, then put it in a movie. Option 2 is nonsense when you've got hordes of characters just laying around already established... who for-no-real-reasaon are white.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | November 2, 2022 11:05 AM |
In the comics, the brain patterns of Simon Williams (Wonder Man) were used to create the Vision, and Simon carried a torch for Wanda (the Scarlet Witch) after he reformed. I think they even dated. We'll see if they use any of that in the movie.
For all his power, Simon had a bit of a self-esteem problem. He had a bromance with the X-Men's Beast, back when the Beast was a much lighter character. (He's been a right bastard for the last 10 years or so.)
Yahya doesn't seem like good casting for that character, but I'm sure the movie Simon will have a different template. Tenoch Huerta doesn't match my conception of Namor at all, but they seem to have remodeled the character enough that he might be just fine for the movies.

The racist thing is the fact that all of Marvel and DC's characters were white up until about the eighties except for black panther in Luke cage and a few others.
And if you want a black character who wasn't a sidekick or some street level guy you shit out a lot because Marvel and DC didn't make Superman type characters who will Black.
Even the black panther had to drink a magic potion to become as strong as a highly trained Olympic athlete, give me a fucking break. You need a magic potion to become something the average White guy can become just by working out.
So now in the 2020s people are realizing why should we be boxed in by the racist bullshit from 50 or 60 or 70 years ago.

Wonder Man was a low-self-esteem character with a tricky history - took credit for his brother's achievements, duped/pressured into villainhood, overcompensated for a while through egotism, difficult and negative role in the Vision/Scarlet Witch arc and headed up a disenchanted anti-Avengers team for a while. If they keep all or any of this, fine, but they won't: blackwashed characters usually end up incredibly noble and bland. The classic version of this is in the Supergirl series, where entertaining/irritating sidekick Jimmy Olsen becomes noble, award-winning photojournalist James Olsen who everyone has to say is wonderful at least once per episode. Meanwhile, they had to then create another entertaining/irritating sidekick (Winn) to actually take the Jimmy Olsen role.
Well of course. And why not? All of those characters were created by white men. It is their creation.
It is more to do with how they were marketing these "products" than who created them. A superhero from another planet is just an idea. If you are selling that idea to a majority culture that wants to see themselves then your hero will be white. Likewise, if you are selling to a majority culture that would be fearful of, or indifferent to, a hero who is not white, then your hero will be white. Now that we live in a "post-racial" culture the owners of these heroes have license to make them any race (or gender) they chose, and certainly no one should object since white people aren't racist anymore.
They were white men of European heritage who created these characters. They wrote about their world. They would never made Superman a black man anymore than a Japanese author would have made lead protagonist black.
Superheroes are fiction. The writers were not depicting "their world." These characters were aspirational and completely untethered to reality. However, they were white so as to be palatable to their intended audience, not because only white people lived on Krypton. If writers had written about "their world" then it would have reflected their own racism as well as the racism of the intended audience and the times. Note that there were no racist superheroes, only villains. Racism is always wrong and reprehensible in these fictional worlds but would have been completely socially acceptable in the world of the writer. So in these fictional, idealized worlds, in 2022, Wonder Man (and Captain America) can be Black without offending the design or intent of their creators. But as we've seen, the "intended" audience is not as evolved or open-minded.
I think it is hilarious that those alt-right MAGAts think they should have anything in common with a superhero.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | November 3, 2022 3:56 AM |

As I understand it, they are focusing on Wonder Man's Hollywood period, where in the comics he was a sort of second-tier Schwarzenegger/Lundgren type. Fair enough if he's now The Rock as a superhero, but it's whether they keep the rest of his borderline-loser persona. Usually when the MCU change the history it is still broadly in line with the original version - Ant-Man was an ex-con, Captain Marvel was in the military, as was War Machine etc. Probably the main exception is Falcon, in the comics a social worker with a petty criminal background, who becomes instead a noble war hero.

For all of your people who actually know who Wonder Man is, did you get laid in high school? College? Everyone knows the main DC people and the XMen and Spiderman and Hulk. Possibly the Fantastic Four. But these obscure superheroes are strictly for the nerds and unpopular. If you actually give a fuck that an obscure superhero that no one else knows gets a gender or race change, then you really are racist. I'll give you a pass if Superman is cast as a black guy, but not some 4th/5th tier superhero.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | November 3, 2022 1:32 PM |
I have never heard of Wonder Man at all. How obscure.
Just something for people to chew on: I don't understand why these studio decisions about race or gender bending are so difficult to grasp. Studios like money. This is just the market in action. They assess what will hit maximum viewer saturation and make decisions accordingly. You may not like it, but studios are clearly making the calculation that the potential loss of your business is worth reaching 5, 10 or even 20 others.
It's just good business.

Wonder Man will work fine as a black character. I have no problem with that at all.
I am glad they are bringing him into the DC Universe, because he can be a new romantic interest after the Vision for Wanda/The Scarlet Witch as he was in the comics.
Fun fact: Marvel only brought him back after he died in his first appearance (thought to be a one-time appearance) in the 1960s because they were so annoyed DC created a heroine called "Power Girl," which they thought infringed on their copyright for Luke Cage/Power Man. They wanted to irritate DC (who owned Wonder Woman) by having an ongoing character called Wonder Man. They actually made him a very interesting character, especially during Kurt Busiek's run as the writer for Avengers.

Hispanics should be doing the same. Gays should be doing the same. Asians should be doing the same. Everybody's in this pool.
R80 The Hispanic majority will NEVER be in power--at least in our lifetime. Not since they CONTINUE to vote against their best interests (Hello, DeSantis).

Dominqiue Thorne plays Ironheart in Wakanda Forever and an upcoming streaming series. In the comics, the character built her own version of Tony Stark's Iron Man suit, and took over the Iron Man comic for a short while.

I’m sure another racewashing series will do just fabulously. I mean people are just in love with:
- Black Captain America (I do like Mackie)
- Black Human Torch with his white adopted sister Sue
- Girl Hawkeye
- She Hulk (more direction than anything)
and I’m sure Black Woman Iron Man (Ironheart) will enthrall hundreds.
So why not bring on a middling Avengers castaway and make him black? That’ll be a smash success.

Everything on your list, except for black Human Torch, was pulled from the comics.
I don’t get what your problem with She-Hulk is, unless you’re a conservative asswipe. It was pretty comic accurate, the way she was portrayed was just like how she is in the comics.
I think Sam Wilson, Kate Bishop and Riri Williams have more than earned their marks already and have proven to be legit original characters.

There was a female Capt America in the what if stories on Disney+ She was also in Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.
by Anonymous | reply 111 | November 4, 2022 2:15 PM |
Also: one more race swap that actually pissed me off: Black Valkyrie, now Queen of Asgard.
Yes R110 many of these were “pulled from the comics” but the comics themselves simply did female ciphers of men, or race-bent ciphers of established names, and none were ever as popular as the originals. Similarly, their MCU properties are not popular (except Danvers).
Ms. Marvel (both Danvers and Kahn), Spider-Woman, She Hulk, Iron Heart, Hawkeye (Bishop)… while I love the bronze aged Jessie Drew and Jen Walters, they’re all cash-ins on existing properties.
Ironheart will bomb like Ms. Marvel did. Whether they’re in the comics or not. People don’t care for those properties because they want to see Iron Man and Capt. Marvel.
They need to work on their existing female properties and do them well. They could do Dazzler, Tigra, Hellcat, Kazar/Shanna.
But they aren’t. Namor, Sersi, Amadeus Cho (if you’re complaining about Riri) for example.
I am a huge critic of race-swapping (mostly blackwashing), but the new take on Namor looks very cool. But that's because the Namor in Black Panther 2 has a specific design, flavor, and context in mind with the [italic]Mayan[/italic] aesthetic. It also helps to contrast the Atlanteans of Marvel (Namor) with the Atlanteans of DC (Aquaman).
When you plop in a black Human Torch, or a black Wonder Man, or what-have-you, the intent is obvious: reduce white characters' presence. Nick Fury was carried entirely by Sam Jackson's presence, and is nearly 20 years old. In those 20 years, most audience members have become exhausted by this, and it's only become ferociously obvious now that the original Avengers arc is concluded, with Black Queen Valkyrie, Black Female Iron Man, Female Hawkeye, Black Captain America... and all at once, mind you. The only character from the main Avengers cast that has NOT been gender or race swapped yet is... Black Window (Florence Pugh/Yelena), who was already the only woman.
And as far as the Eternals, that was a complete attempt at a United Colors of Benneton cast, which... whatever. It was not well-received and was pretty much blunt with its intent.

Yes but why would the poster take issue with it if they don't know the character? Folks who don't know about comic book characters don't have their "head in the sand" they probably just have other interests. The outrage about the race change of a largely unknown character is racism -- i.e. all superheroes should remain white since they were created that way 50 years ago.

by Anonymous | reply 149 | November 5, 2022 1:53 AM |
Thank you R149. It's called show BUSINESS, not show diversity. Hollywood does not make a move that is going to cost them money. In American markets, right now, diversity sells. Then they can just recut and airbrush the posters for foreign markets to downplay the diversity.
If you care about the color of obscure comic characters from the 70s and 80s, you are not the demographic they're trying to reach. In America, companies care about reaching white people 13-35. They aren't blackwashing characters for black people. Diversity, equity and inclusion is not about black people and if you've convinced yourself that any of this is about black people or that black people are pushing this, then you're dead wrong. It's not about bowing down to a minority population, it's about money and who spends money in this country and desirable demographics - and that remains young white people.
