It was fine when I woke up today but at some point during the day it started aching.
Now I can't raise my arm over my head and it hurts to reach for anything. Driving home, I couldn't even rest my right hand on the wheel.
WTF is it?

You may have pulled a muscle. That can happen without you realizing it.

Google “Frozen shoulder”
by Anonymous | reply 7 | October 31, 2022 12:32 AM |
R7, I was just going to say that. It’s also known, even more alarmingly, as “dead arm syndrome.” You should see a doctor, who can recommend exercises for it.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 31, 2022 12:34 AM |
yeah, getting old sucks.
You get aches and pains all of a sudden.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 31, 2022 12:34 AM |
It is really what R9 mentions.
You get older, you get sudden aches and pains. It happens.
If you ever get prescribed painkillers for surgery, etc. treat those like gold and take only when necessary because you aren’t getting them again for random ailments.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 31, 2022 12:38 AM |
It happens within one hour of your 50th birthday. It happened to me last month.

by Anonymous | reply 16 | October 31, 2022 12:48 AM |
That sounds unpleasant OP. Some medical history would help.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | October 31, 2022 12:55 AM |
Shoulder pain can often suddenly occur when rotator cuff tendons become trapped under the bony area of the shoulder.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | October 31, 2022 1:00 AM |
Something happened to me like this about a year ago. I thought it was from shoveling snow, but the problem didn't start til a couple days after that. My shoulder was stiiff, sore and I could hardly lift my arm. For months. Everything I did made it hurt.
It gradually subsided, but it was so gradual I can't remember when it mostly stopped aching. I thought I'd be permanently 'sorta disabled'.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 31, 2022 1:07 AM |
I blame decades of doing push-ups in the Army for my bum shoulder. It goes on and off. Get used to these aches and catalog them for the future panic attacks of imminent death.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 31, 2022 1:14 AM |
OP, you slept on it wrong. Don't sleep on your side for a few days and it will go away.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 31, 2022 1:16 AM |
I have right shoulder issues from years of using a mouse or touchpad. It causes overextended movement and leaning to one side. And if course masturbation and using a cellphone. The best thing is to take a break.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 31, 2022 1:18 AM |
Frozen shoulder. There’s nothing you can really do other than PT exercises. It will resolve itself in a year or two. A sling can help.

by Anonymous | reply 25 | October 31, 2022 1:42 AM |
That sounds like rotator cuff issues. Weird you didn't do anything to cause it. but often if your nice to it it will get better before too long.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 31, 2022 1:43 AM |
It could be bursitis, another old man ailment.

by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 31, 2022 1:50 AM |
I was going to say bursitis, also. My grandma had it.
Also, if you go to sleep drunk, you may have slept too long in one position, causing a freeze-up. Happened to an alcoholic friend of a friend.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 31, 2022 1:55 AM |
I had it. No injury, it just came out of nowhere. It's been about a year and a half, and it's 95% back to normal range of motion until it somewhat aches/pains. I kept stretching it in positions that hurt purposely, fearing the limited range/pain might become set if I didn't.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | October 31, 2022 3:11 AM |
Sounds like it may be frozen shoulder. It can take over a year for it to go away, with or without therapy. After two years mine was gone. It often shows up around age 50. when it first showed up I could barely pull a tshirt over my head. Hard to do housework like mopping or vacuuming. The shoulder is the most complex joint in the body, so get it checked out to see what it might be
by Anonymous | reply 31 | October 31, 2022 3:55 AM |
It's an early sign of chronic heart failure and COPD, OP, sadly, your days are numbered. If you are double-boosted, then, it's a goodbye to the world.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | October 31, 2022 4:13 AM |
Get a band and do some stretches. Try the “windmill.” Dangle your arm and make slow circular movements with your arm.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | October 31, 2022 4:31 AM |
Could also be a torn rotator cuff, or a torn bicep, both of which can happen without you realizing you've done anything.

Most people do not make an obvious link between a particular activity and shoulder pain. But there was most likely SOMETHING. Maybe you twisted or caught yourself, maybe you lifted something into the closet, maybe you slept funny on your shoulder but didn't notice anything immediately upon waking the next day. I had a fall once, and landed on my front. I obviously put out my arm to brace myself, but didn't notice anything immediately. The next day, I couldn't raise my arms above waist height.
What I learned from that experience was A. if you don't maintain range of motion, often you will lose some range of motion permanently and B. lifting the arm by forcing it with muscular exertion was out of the question - the muscles wouldn't allow it. My solution was to use a surface as my guide so that other muscle groups could support the lifting of the arm. For instance, I would stand in a doorway, and run my fingers up the doorway. The support of the door itself would allow my arm to go directly over my head without clutching any muscles along the way. Since mine was obviously some sort of tear, it took about 3 or 4 weeks to heal, but during that time, I did those simple supported exercises to keep my range of motion. When I was able to lift my arm again, I started to increase the range of motion through big circles etc, but always with some sort of surface nearby to support me if I felt any pain or clutching. It was very scary at first. I couldn't even lift a container of milk out of the refrigerator.

Friend had a bad shoulder he had to ice constantly. Doc told him there's very little space, which is a bad thing (between what, I forgot. Maybe between the shoulder and arm connection). Yes, he's early 50's. Scary! Not sure how to prevent these things!
I think I have carpal tunnel myself, tryna type less on mobile devices.

I swear that certain viruses settle in a certain part of the body. You’ll feel better in a few days.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | October 31, 2022 7:29 AM |
I had a frozen shoulder as the result of a non-ergonomic computer keyboard I used constantly at work. The company paid for treatment and physical therapy, and I regained full movement in a matter of weeks. Bonus: The specialist I saw was married to Shelley Winters' daughter, and he mentioned that Shelley actually was a very good swimmer and that she taught her grandchildren how to swim.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | October 31, 2022 7:58 AM |
That is a VERY DL story, R41.
I agree it's probably frozen shoulder, but you need to see a doctor first and then a qualified physical therapist, because you need a proper diagnosis. If it's frozen shoulder you need to do very specific exercises and you need to do them consistently to keep it working as well as possible for when the problem subsides and then to get the full range of movement back. It often arrives and departs with no obvious reason, but it's usually around for a year or so.
It was explained to me that the shoulder has even more range of movement than the hip, but the ball and socket joint for the hip is much deeper and more secure than the shoulder, where the socket goes round less than half of the "ball". It is also less secure than the knee, which moves in fewer directions and yet has more ligaments to hold the moving joint in place. That's why a shoulder is such a bastard to get back to normal once it's gone wrong.

OP here.
My shoulder is still incredibly sore when I move my arm around. I'm doing some stretches and if things don't improve in the next few days I'll be making a physio appointment.
Thanks all for the tips.

My shoulder is still sore and I can't get comfortable in bed.
Is it okay to take some NyQuil and a couple of Robax to help me sleep and ease some discomfort?
by Anonymous | reply 45 | November 1, 2022 4:37 AM |
Just look up 50 year old shoulder. Mine happened at about age 53. It hurt so bad that I had to sleep slumped over in a chair for weeks. It finally was so bad early one morning I couldn't take it and went to the emergency room. They did radiology and gave me something but couldn't tell anything and nothing really helped. It eventually went away on its own.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | November 1, 2022 5:41 AM |
OP, go to a physiotherapist stat!
I had a similar issue in early summer, my whole right arm was painful and could hardly move it. Things resolved surprisingly fast when I started doing the physio exercises with a rubber band - stretch and strength exercises.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | November 1, 2022 5:47 AM |
Had similar symptoms caused by shingles. Initially VERY SORE, almost unusable left arm, two days later rash developed on left arm skin. many years ago -treated with an oral anti-viral successfully. Have been vaccinated by both vaccines since; no reoccurrences.

by Anonymous | reply 49 | November 1, 2022 4:13 PM |
Frozen shoulder. I got it twice in the space of about 6 or 7 years. It's not clearly understood why it happens and why it heals. But it dies. First time, it took a handful of physical therapy sessions over a few weeks. The second, the therapist stopped treatment after about 2 or 3 months and said there wasn't much more he could do to hasten healing. It was going to resolve itself through time. He was right, it took over a year. I was pissed about treatment being stopped though because my shoulder was nowhere close to being unfrozen.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | November 1, 2022 4:34 PM |
It's one of those things like plantar fasciitis, R50. Comes and goes for no discernible reason.
Doing the exercises stops it getting worse and will eventually take advantage of more movement as it gets better, but in the end it fixes itself when it fixes itself. There's nothing they can do. I'm not sure whether cortisone injections are an option: you could ask about that if it gets worse, OP.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | November 4, 2022 12:20 PM |
Don't wait to get it looked at. If it becomes a chronic issue getting. better will be more difficult and take longer.

Similar experience. Reached up for something and had a sudden pain. The pain came every time I pulled a t-shirt off, used a towel to dry my back, etc. It didn't improve on its own and impacted daily life more and more. My doctor referred me to an orthopedic doctor who suggested physical therapy. Six weeks later and still no relief. So I had a cortisone shot which did the trick.

I had the same last year. good luck , OP. Fortunately I found myself a very cute therapist, and saw him thrice a week for months.I don't remember what it's called, but it's painful as hell.

Well 4 months ago I woke up with not "soreness" but disabling pain in both shoulders, both hips, and both knees. The previous day everything was normal and I had walked my daily 2 miles like I had for the past 15 years.
Now I am basically CRIPPLED!
The doctor's diagnosis was ostearthritis. When I asked him if it was possible to come on with such severity in only one night, he said it was not common, but possible.
I am elderly, but appear 15 years younger than my actual age.
He prescribed Celebrex, and I took it for 2 months, and it controllled the pain, however, then the stomach pain started and I had to quit the Celebrex. Celebrex is murder on the stomach and can actually cause fatal stomach bleeding.

BTW I am elderly but look 40 years younger than my actual age, which is irrelevant, but R59 seems to think such facts are important.

Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccine Administration (SIRVA) is a well known potential consequence of any injection. But it's due to being given a shot too high in the arm. Are all your medical providers inept, by chance?

I had the same thing with my left shoulder and arm. It felt like I overworked the muscles and was sore. This was pre-covid and all the vaccines...so not vaccine related. I do some gardening, live in the Northeast....so, with some googling, I thought it might be lymes disease. I went to a lymes specialist, had extensive blood work...nothing. The doctor saw something autoimmume. I saw a Rheumatologist (sp?)...also more blood work done, and so far...nothing. Eventually, the soreness in my arm disappeared. I do have some arthritis, especially in my right index finger, and it hurts a little. Long story short...getting old sucks. You feel aches and a little pain, here and there. Sorry for misspellings.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | November 4, 2022 2:28 PM |
Check if you have an insect bite or a pimple in your chest area. I once had one under my tit - it wasn't big at all - and I couldnt lift my arm anymore for the pain it caused me. Nerves run in mysterious ways.
Option b: have you been working out?
by Anonymous | reply 65 | November 4, 2022 2:41 PM |
I had something similar. It was from sleeping in a cramped position one night. Couldn’t raise my arm above shoulder height and it “felt weak”. I read up on exercises and did those for a few weeks. Took nearly two years for pain to stop completely. I have a full range of motion now but when I rotate my arm, I can hear a crunching noise.
I’d been planning to get a cortisone shot when it first happened but by the time I could get an appointment, it was less painful. I’d also read that while one shot does wonders, a second shot is ineffective.

Gentle stretching (find out the right ones from a physio if you’re already injured like OP) gets rid of so many general aches and pains that people complain about as “getting old”. Contrary to the ageism of datalounge, late 40’s and early 50’s is way to young to be complaining as much as some people here are about this stuff.
