When Was Homosexuality Originally Outlawed In The United States?

I can’t find anything online not pertaining to LGBTQI bullshit. When was homosexuality originally officially banned? Anyone know?

by Anonymousreply 39November 4, 2022 1:19 PM

Homosexual intercourse -sodomy- was criminal during the earliest colonial time. Puritans and all that... There are documented executions for it as far back as 1624, and the Massachusetts Bay General Court outlawed sodomy in 1631. In 1714 Sodomy laws were established across the early colonies and in the colonial militia, and those laws were not abolished until 1925. The first state to decriminalize sodomy was Illinois, in 1962, but it wasn't until 2003 that the SCOTUS ruling in Lawrence vs. Texas lifted sodomy bans in all 50 states.

Next time, try Wikipedia, OP...

by Anonymousreply 1October 30, 2022 4:11 AM

do you mean outllawed/banned or the legal discriminated against? Many states still still have discriminatory language allowing landlords/employers to not hire or rent to gays and lesbians regardless of court rulings (state vs federal regulations)

by Anonymousreply 2October 30, 2022 4:18 AM

Nobody believes anything on Wikipedia, Snopes or Google any more. If they do they're fools.

by Anonymousreply 3October 30, 2022 4:29 AM

And in killing gay marriage, I’m sure the SCOTUS judges will go back and talk about how sodomy used to be outlawed early in our history and thus, that’s how it should stay—just like they did with the abortion ruling

by Anonymousreply 4October 30, 2022 4:30 AM

Only fools believe they can generalize so sweepingly about a massive information site like Wikipedia, R3.

Also, Google is a search engine, not an information source. It directs you TO information sources.

by Anonymousreply 5October 30, 2022 4:38 AM

In 1492.

by Anonymousreply 6October 30, 2022 5:01 AM

Others have talked about when it was "originally" outlawed but I'll also point out it is still technically outlawed in a number of states, in contravention to the Supreme Court's Lawrence v. Texas ruling.

So is your neighborhood coffee klatch your definitive source for all information?

by Anonymousreply 8October 30, 2022 5:14 AM

It was a tranny judge who overturned the sodomy laws in 2003.

by Anonymousreply 9October 30, 2022 5:19 AM

So Wikipedia and Snopes are no-gos for you, but asking random anonymous posters on DL is better?

by Anonymousreply 10October 30, 2022 5:20 AM

No, it was not banned in all the states I think until the twentieth century. Repeals started in 1961 with Illinois.

by Anonymousreply 11October 30, 2022 5:41 AM

This is a huge topic. First of all, the legal definition of sodomy is anal or oral copulation. Is there anything in that legal definition that limits it to homosexual activity? No. Typically, these sorts of activities were kept between the participants. Only in times of social or political upheaval were these issues (as in the present) used to focus attention on people, usually for different reasons than their sexual activities., and those witch hunts were nearly always directed against male-male sexual partners. Anal and oral copulation are nearly as common in heterosexual relations as in gay relations, but enforcement of sodomy laws against heterosexuals has always been rare. . Homosexuality is a relatively recent term - it wasn't even invented until the late 1800s - so it could not have been enshrined in common law, which is much older. Lots of homosexuals, both past and present, have limited their activity to mutual masturbation, frottage, and so forth. Technically, they have not been engaging in sodomy. If Alito and other judges were to bring up sodomy as the basis of anti-homosexual legislation, I would hope that any lawyers worth their salt arguing against that point of view in a supreme court hearing would leap all over that.

Hello, QAnon Troll.

by Anonymousreply 14October 30, 2022 9:08 AM

The bible states that homosexuality is evil and all early Christian societies conformed to that, so it wasn't as if it was merrily flourishing and then suddenly got made illegal at some specific time.

by Anonymousreply 15October 30, 2022 9:10 AM

No the BIble doesn't R15. That's a lie. There are literally hundreds of counterexamples and the claims that it is evil have been deliberately mistranslated. Nobody reading the bible from cover to cover would EVER come to the conclusion that homosexuality is forbidden or even an issue to it.

by Anonymousreply 16October 30, 2022 9:19 AM

Poor naive little R16 thinks he can be gay AND a Christian and it will all be okay!

Leviticus chapter 20, verse 13 reads: “If a man has intercourse with a man as with a woman, both commit an abomination. They must be put to death.”

So the Bible's stance is not just to bash homosexuals but to murder them. Fuck you, R16.

by Anonymousreply 17October 30, 2022 9:25 AM

False. That's a mistranslation. There are entire books about that passage and what it says and does not say: and what's more no Christians have ever used the whole list which includes things like mixing fabrics and cursing your parents or having sex during the menstraul cycle as death penalty traits. It is conspicuously left off the same list in Deuteronomy. Indeed, in Leviticus 18 the punishment for a man having sex wiht a man as a woman would (NOT as he would with a woman) is to be cut off from the people, not death. The death part comes in Leviticus 20 and it is a list which has never been used as the basis for law in any nation because the list is nonsense. And indeed, Jesus' relationship with beloved John is indicated to be sexual, and Daniel serves himself to Nebuchadnezzar to save Israel in captivity, and Jacob has sex with an angel and that's how Israel gets its name. You are completely out of your depth and mind in your ignorant and unethical reading of the bible.

by Anonymousreply 18October 30, 2022 9:36 AM

R18 Who gives a fuck your moron? It’s a work of fiction, and if you believe that it’s actually real, then you’re dumber than a Trump supporter.

by Anonymousreply 19October 30, 2022 9:40 AM

THOSE WERE THE DAYS

by Anonymousreply 20October 30, 2022 9:52 AM

That's not the point. We all care because they are using it against us even though it's a lie. It shouldn't matter: we should have religious freedom to do what we want. But we don't because courts have made a false and invidious distinction between religon and behavior in sex and not other areas. So if you evict a tenant because they are Catholic and eat f ish on Friday and you hate the smell of fish, you get sued for religious discrimination. But if someone tells you he's gay and that violates your religoius belief, then you can evict him even though it's prima facie discrimination. That's the world we live in thanks to these lies about the bible. The bible has literally HUNDREDS of e xamples of homosexuality presented as good that these preachers knowingly ignore and lie about depending on the ignorance of their followers to maintain their facade. There is not one who does not lie or use double standards in constructing their anti-gay theology. SO IT FUCKING MATTERS

by Anonymousreply 21October 30, 2022 10:12 AM

R21 The invisible purple monster that lives under my bed says that it’s okay to be gay. The fact that I’m pulling this story out of my ass is irrelevant as long as you like the story, right?

by Anonymousreply 22October 30, 2022 10:20 AM

R18, can you recommend a book or website that goes through all the biblical falsities?

by Anonymousreply 23October 30, 2022 1:37 PM

R18 Thank you.19 is just shifting the goalpost. He says "The Bible says" and only ever made it to curated passages of Leviticus. You point out other passages that paint a much richer picture; a meltdown ensues. Never mind. It seems that he's the one taking the bible too seriously. You can appreciate the Bible without believing in it. It's a fascinating, layered work of authors and editors over millennia.

by Anonymousreply 24October 30, 2022 1:53 PM

What do you mean we’re going back to change all the laws to how it used to be?

by Anonymousreply 25October 30, 2022 2:02 PM

R21 Bravo.

It’s all true.

Hell has been mistranslated as well. The idea of an underworld on fire where a red monster sets every sinner on fire isn’t in the Bible. It’s not mentioned once in the Bible.

The devil isn’t mentioned either.

I’m sure you can find some hillbilly American Bible that talks about Satan and hell and homos but it’s not based in anything legit.

by Anonymousreply 26October 30, 2022 2:35 PM

The MAGA states will probably start adopting and enforcing these laws (but not for heterosexuals) when Lawrence gets overturned by the radical Supreme Court. They can start charging us and rounding us up for the camps. They’ll get people they can’t catch with sodomy by accusing us of being child molesters, imprison us, and keep us there for years. Keep voting Republican folks.

by Anonymousreply 27October 30, 2022 2:36 PM

I would guess the laws against sodomy were made to target straight couples who were engaging in sexual activity that didn't lead to pregnancy.

If they ban oral and anal sex, they will have to ban 99.9 percent of straight porn.

Homosexuality was and is disliked because it disrupts the patriarchal family structure and is seen as unproductive because procreation was the most important thing when humans didn't live past 40. Also gays are a minority, so easy to scapegoat and use punishment to "make an example." Young boys and girls had more leeway to sexually experiment but once they reached adulthood they were expected to get married and have children and monogamy was to ensure a stable home and inheritance. Men especially rich landowner had more freedom to have extramarital lovers that could also include younger men or male slaves. Sodomy laws mostly affected commoners. This is all heavily seen in agricultural societies in The Middle East, Europe and Asia even before their major religions. And Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Confucianism and Buddhism didn't see homosexuality as noble behavior but rather a sign of indulgence, rebelling against one's biological function and evading social responsibility.

by Anonymousreply 31October 30, 2022 3:32 PM

Nice rationalizing but only if true. I fear you are using Victorian morality and applying it to ancient societies which were into livestock breeding and didn't need human procreation so much.

by Anonymousreply 32October 30, 2022 4:35 PM

R3 gets his info from Truth Social.

by Anonymousreply 33October 30, 2022 4:42 PM

People aren’t homophobic because of the Bible. People are naturally looking for smaller “other” groups to hate and use the Bible as the reasoning.

by Anonymousreply 34October 30, 2022 4:47 PM

I wonder if that defense ever worked r12. For one thing, jurisdictions often had vague "crimes against nature" categories, which would be applied to any gay activity, even too much affection. Other cute little laws were created. People at Stonewall were arrested under a New York criminal statute that authorized the arrest of anyone not wearing at least three articles of gender-appropriate clothing. That law seems particularly crazy and completely unconstitutional on the face of it, but maybe it all falls under "obscenity," that other really vague category that puritans always find so useful.

A woman for pleasure.

A boy for joy.

A goat for ecstasy.

- Ancient Greek proverb

by Anonymousreply 36November 4, 2022 7:13 AM

Obese, incel slobs, like OP, have nothing to worry about, though.

by Anonymousreply 37November 4, 2022 7:25 AM

I don't know. The last goat who sold me ecstacy ripped me off, man.

I switched to squirrels but they're all about nuts and I said I don't swing that way. I mean, I would but their teeth, jeez!

by Anonymousreply 38November 4, 2022 7:25 AM

I’ve heard it as “a melon for ecstasy”. I guess you make a hole and use it like a Fleshjack.
