[quote]If that's the case, if Blue Sky ends up creating something that competes with Twitter, then what would stop Twitter from dismantling it?
R84, The only real defense he has is that
1. The protocol was meant to work with Twitter and any social platform, it just happens to have its own BlueSky server as well.
2. Elon knew about it because Jack discussed it with him and tweeted about it prior to Elon buying Twitter.
Jack started the project in response to having to boot Trump off of Twitter. He didn't feel like that should have been "Twitter's" decision. He made it with Twitter initially to use the protocol to tap into Twitter's userbase and ... nefariously ... to eliminate moderation of Twitter by Twitter and government interference. He also (correctly) doesn't believe Twitter should be able to mine and own your data to pass on to advertisers. So the only way to do that is to make everyone responsible for own content.
What will likely happen is:
Your username will be something like TheVulture@bluesky, and everything involving your profile will be attached to it.
There will be a main server you can connect to at BlueSky. You can use the app to connect to other services like Twitter, Facebook, Insta, etc. under that username if they use the AT Protocol.
Then TV networks, businesses, colleges, individuals, etc. can all have their own servers you can connect to.
Those servers are responsible for their own content & you are responsible for your own profile because it's yours.
The dude created email again. (Honestly.)
[quote]Have any social media platforms been dethroned after the fall of MySpace? ... It seems like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, Reddit and now TikTok all own their main function [...], it doesn't change the dominance of the original platform.
TikTok is a replacement for Vine which happened post Myspace. The creator of Vine tried to create Vine 2.0 but he waited too long. TikTok took over. I'd also add Twitch to that list. It has a unique function for streamers. Also, BeReal which is something like a Instagram/Snapchat with the gimmick of it telling you when it wants you to post.
All of those services stay on top by mirroring each other. Youtube is pushing "Shorts" which is their answer to TikTok. All the other services have something like TikTok built in now. Also early on in those services they did often work together. Instagram shut off Twitter years ago. Instagram can do destructible messages like Snapchat.
