You know, I just saw a Pretty Woman clip
I wouldn't mind seeing a modern day sequel with Gere and Roberts showing them happily married for the past 32 years with a story centered around their son, his father's business heir, dating a young woman that Vivian doesn't approve of.
It would be interesting to see how Vivian evolved and tried to put her past behind her. It would be interesting to watch the women in her social circle be nice to her face because of who her husband is and how powerful he is, but catty behind her back, seeing the realization that after all these years, they still think of her as a hooker with a heart of gold, of course.
There are so many things a sequel could humorously address which would fit nicely into the whole DIE craze - apparently Diversity, Inclusion and Equity is the non-pejorative way to say "woke" among those who are woke.

Son's girlfriend: "Your mother's a whore, darling."

I doubt they would have lasted. You really can't change anyone who was once a prostitute. They stay promiscuous for the rest of their lives and usually continue to dabble in drugs. Not a judgement, just being realistic.

I’d rather see that than Pretty Woman being remade starring someone who isn’t necessarily a pretty woman.

I never bought the happily ever after thought for the original movie.
Why?
Because the first time it (her background) came up, Gere's character freely told Jason Alexander's character that she was a whore.
This, for me, was the truth of his feelings about her. And if he didn't choose to protect her story during this part of their association, there is no way they would live happily ever after.

R3 Well it would certainly be more realistic.. Most hookers don't look like Julia did.

Actually, today she'd be a sugarbaby advertising on some online site, not a street hooker.

Well, R2, Traci Lords has been married to the same guy for 20 years, with a kid, although she had two other husbands before that.

R2 her character didn't do drugs or enjoy prostitution.

Julia's hooking didn't go in for booze and dope.

They did, but as a series. It was called Cops. Most of the hookers were toothless and giving blowjobs in cars for $20.

I knew a guy who married a stripper 20 years ago. I liked her. She seemed sweet but not that bright and definitely not educated or sophisticated. I don’t think they planned to have a family and it didn’t work out. Roberts’ character was a street whore, so the stripper was a PhD who grew up at country clubs and debutante balls compared to her. She probably wouldn’t have been able to write a grammatically correct email to her decorator or complain about her kids’ school curriculum with the other moms. She would have been miserable.
The story would be more realistic if Gere’s character was sketchier. They made his business practices out to be “bad,” but he wasn’t doing anything illegal. I don’t recall the backstory, but he seemed like the Ivy League to Wall Street investment banking to small boutique type. He should have been mob-adjacent or the second generation owner of a boiler room operation. Or an especially crooked and flashy hedge fund guy.
It was a cute movie, but a ridiculous plot.

R12 you're 2nd paragraph was spot on. Gere was way too clean cut and almost preppy to be dating a working girl.

It wasn’t believable, but most of these movies aren’t. One of the most amusing posters on DL that I’ve read was in a Sixteen Candles thread. They kept going on about how it would never happen in real life; but these films are mainly fantasy.
Now an Officer and Gentleman... that relationship had less of a chance of lasting than the one in PW.

It was a gross movie. Men who buy women are not romantic heroes. And she was annoying as hell. Any kid they had would probably be a criminal.

I would rather watch a remake with the original script and set it in the 80s or 90s.
