Lots of crazy conservatives and just a general sense that the lunatics are running the asylum.
Is it like Florida in that it's a place where many people go to start life over?

First, Arizona doesn't have a coastline, so it isn't West Coast. Second, like Florida, AZ gets a lot of retirees from further inland, many of whom bring their conservative values to the state. They and their progeny then run for office, get elected, and pass bills and ordinances that align with their crazy beliefs, impose them upon others, and make it harder for those with opposing beliefs to get elected.

What's really weird is how nuts Arizona's people are while new Mexico's populace is so much chiller and sane.

Lots of wealthy retirees, lots of poor white trash, lots of conservative Latinos.

There is one common link between Florida and Arizona: "SNOWBIRD" retirees.
In Florida, they're from the Northeast.
In Arizona, they're from the Midwest and the Northeast.
Generally conservative voters.
And their numbers are growing.

As the angry old white Christian men retire, they want to live somewhere it's warm enough their lazy asses don't constantly ache, so they move south bringing with them their crazy white simpleton wives and spawn. It doesn't bother me that they've taken Florida; it was already America's toilet. But Arizona is a shame. It once belonged to the crazy polygamist Mormons, but no more. Arixona's growth won't last much longer, however; they're out of water and due to the extensive negotiations and laws surrounding the Colorado River, they won't have access to any more (but I'm sure they'll blame Democrats for their stupidity even though all the contracts and negotiations were done decades ago when conservatives ran the West).
