Cost of new water heater?

My hot water went out the other day. I need a new 40 gallon tank plus installation. The quote seemed really high. The cheapest one I found is for $1900. I’m in Southern California. Do you guys think this is a super high price or is this about normal?

by Anonymousreply 44October 28, 2022 3:03 AM

I replaced mine last yr, Metro NYC area, 40 gals, $1300. I used the firm that checks my heat, so he gave me a discount.

by Anonymousreply 1October 26, 2022 6:19 PM

Get an on-demand water heater.

by Anonymousreply 2October 26, 2022 6:22 PM

I paid $1300 for a 40-gal. unit last year. And that was without installation, because my brother hooked it up for me.

by Anonymousreply 3October 26, 2022 6:25 PM

OP, I had to pay $4300 (Brooklyn) last year.

by Anonymousreply 4October 26, 2022 6:25 PM

So you guys think $1900 is a fair price? I understand the price could vary depending on how difficult it is to install.

by Anonymousreply 5October 26, 2022 6:26 PM

My dad paid $1800 last year with install.

by Anonymousreply 6October 26, 2022 6:28 PM

Op just looked online. 40 gal water heater at a home improvement store is between $400 - $500. Order one and have a plumber install it. If a plumber is charging you $100/hr the maximum amount of time to install it is 4 hrs. For $1900 unless your water heater is some weirdly installed unit rather than a normal installation means you’re getting fucked….and not in a good way.

by Anonymousreply 7October 26, 2022 6:34 PM

OP, do you know which water heater you're getting? You should get the name, look at the price and then see how much they're charging for labor/installation

by Anonymousreply 8October 26, 2022 7:15 PM

Not sure R8.

Thank you all for the responses. After researching I’m going with a plumber that my neighbor recommends. They even said the price could be less depending on how long installation takes. Wish me luck!

by Anonymousreply 9October 26, 2022 7:54 PM

The best thing is when you have a recommendation from someone who has already used them, so that's good, OP

by Anonymousreply 10October 26, 2022 7:56 PM

I replaced mine 5 years ago and I think it was 1350.

I'm in SoCal too.

If you sign into yelp, you can put a bidding war out for your area and you'll get a bunch of offers and then you pick the plumber with the best rating/lowest price. I did that for carpet cleaning. Saved me alot of time.

by Anonymousreply 11October 26, 2022 7:59 PM

I bought mine from Home Depot and then paid them $250 more for installation.

The local plumber HD used was top notch. My WH is in my attic and the two-man crew was in and out in 30 minutes.

by Anonymousreply 12October 26, 2022 8:00 PM

[quote]and the two-man crew was in and out in 30 minutes.

Whore!

by Anonymousreply 13October 26, 2022 8:15 PM

I recently bought a 40 gallon water heater from Contractors' Warehouse in NoHo for $750. Installed it myself with BIL's help.

by Anonymousreply 14October 26, 2022 8:22 PM

OP, I know a good plumber who is fair and who would install it for you if you are near the Valley.

by Anonymousreply 15October 26, 2022 8:23 PM

I rent my hot water heater. It costs me in rent about not quite $60 every 3 months. My first hot water heater broke and they come to my house and gave me a new hot water heater completely free. Renting it works for me especially when you are paying so much money out for a new one all at one. Look into this and see if you can do this. I live in Canada if it makes any difference with this issue.

by Anonymousreply 16October 26, 2022 8:34 PM

R16 Renting it works for me especially when you are paying so much money out for a new one all at once.

by Anonymousreply 17October 26, 2022 8:36 PM

OP, sometimes the estimate is high because the old water heater is in an awkward spot and difficult to remove. My water heaters have been large ones and they live in a very narrow utility closet (made by a former owner) which also houses the furnace and an air cleaner. A big part of the expense was moving the old water heater out and the new one in. (I think it cost me over 2000, but of course, it also broke down during Christmas week!, Holiday repairs are sort of the equivalent of overtime charges). If that is the situation in your place, I'd grab the $1900 quote and run with it. If, on the other hand, the water heater is relatively small and in a place easy to get to and remove the old one from, maybe you can get a lower quote.

by Anonymousreply 18October 27, 2022 12:54 AM

I bought my 40 gallon online for $449 from Home Depot as a pick up in store. I found a plumber on thumbtack who picked it up for me and installed it for $550

by Anonymousreply 19October 27, 2022 7:33 AM

Installed by a licensed plumber in LA County, it was about $1600 on average last year. Given inflation, that price is not completely outside the box, OP.

by Anonymousreply 20October 27, 2022 7:39 AM

^^ I say "on average" because a bunch of units in my building replaced their water heaters last year due to age and the fact we had several floods from old ones that leaked. The on-site property manager researched prices and quoted that average in the newsletter. If you go cheap and have some dumbass install it and it leaks you will be sorry if it floods out 3 or floors below you.

by Anonymousreply 21October 27, 2022 7:46 AM

I know someone who did not replace their water heater since it broke/leaked/went kaput 3 years ago. How could they stand not to have hot water? They'd rather go without than let someone in to replace it and seem quite cheerful about it.

by Anonymousreply 22October 27, 2022 10:16 AM

I write these up here is an example:

40 gallon Bradford White Gas water heater

2 ¾ inch cold and hot flex lines

1 ½ inch gas valve and 2 foot water flex line

1 ½ inch gas tee, 4 inch nipple and cap for a drip leg

1 ¾ expansion tank installed at the cold water supply feed

1 expansion tank strap

1 24-inch smitty pan to terminate outside

My cost on above items is $926.57

Labor includes getting the water heater, draining old one, install, get trash and old heater take it back

4 hours, my price also includes your water heater will pass inspection and permitting per 2022 code requirements. $1625.

I’m in San Diego

[quote]My WH is in my attic

Is that normal?

by Anonymousreply 24October 27, 2022 12:28 PM

Paid about $1200 for a new Rheem 12-year 40-gallon WH including installation and misc. parts.

by Anonymousreply 25October 27, 2022 1:13 PM

[quote]Saved me alot of time.

Use that time to brush up on your grammar.

by Anonymousreply 26October 27, 2022 1:18 PM

I, too, r22, know someone who didn’t replace their water heater. But then they died.

by Anonymousreply 27October 27, 2022 1:19 PM

[quote]I rent my hot water heater. It costs me in rent about not quite $60 every 3 months. My first hot water heater broke and they come to my house and gave me a new hot water heater completely free.

They’re screwing you. Why would hot water need to be heated?

by Anonymousreply 28October 27, 2022 1:20 PM

Back in the early '70s, the local electric company and local gas company here were in a competition for the hot water market.

One offered a program (quickly matched by the other) where for a $1 a month surcharge on their regular monthly bill, a customer could call before noon and get a water heater installed the same day.

I always thought it was like the competing gas stations gas wars of the same era.

by Anonymousreply 29October 27, 2022 1:26 PM

I live outside of Philly - had a new heater put in about 10 years ago. 40 gallon heater for about $600, then $300 to install the new one and haul out the old one.

by Anonymousreply 30October 27, 2022 1:55 PM

I'm in CT and replaced my 30 gallon gas water heater a couple of months ago for $2400 installed. The tank leaked and flooded two of the floors below me. A friend had the same thing happen a few years ago and it cost them about $2000 to replace.

by Anonymousreply 31October 27, 2022 2:05 PM

Depending on the city, you might need a city permit to install a new hot water heater. When I lived in Long Beach, I installed a new one I bought at Lowe's myself. Then I was fined for not having filed a permit.

The home improvement warehouse hot water heaters are not the same quality as ones that professional plumbers use. Also, if you have natural gas, you should consider a tankless one.

by Anonymousreply 32October 27, 2022 2:12 PM

$1300 last year, gas, 40 gallon, Boston area, ten year guarantee. Which is bullshit, because the tank’s not going to break but the electronics that control the flame probably will and that’s only guaranteed for a year. And costs about $650 to replace which is why we have a new water heater.

by Anonymousreply 33October 27, 2022 2:14 PM

Just use the hot water at the gym.

Oh yeah.

HA HA HA HA

by Anonymousreply 34October 27, 2022 2:57 PM

Why not go tankless??

Less energy spent trying to keep forty gallons hot all the time.

Plus endless hot water.

by Anonymousreply 35October 27, 2022 3:16 PM

[quote]Just use the hot water at the gym. Oh yeah. HA HA HA HA

You ain’t right.

I mean, you ARE right, but you ain’t right. Lol.

by Anonymousreply 36October 27, 2022 3:47 PM

R35 Because some of us live in condos with electric water heaters, and converting to electric tankless is not an option due to the high electrical load. Many HOAs prohibit them.

by Anonymousreply 37October 27, 2022 7:20 PM

Wow, really, R37??

Another reason to loathe HOAs.

by Anonymousreply 38October 28, 2022 12:47 AM

Still don't get the water heater in the attic thing bs being in the basement where it normally goes.

by Anonymousreply 39October 28, 2022 2:31 AM

bs -> vs

by Anonymousreply 40October 28, 2022 2:31 AM

My electric one was less than 800 dollars installed, though I live in Texas in a smaller town

by Anonymousreply 41October 28, 2022 2:35 AM

Op, where in southern California are you?

by Anonymousreply 42October 28, 2022 2:35 AM

Hello!!

by Anonymousreply 43October 28, 2022 2:43 AM

You are getting ripped off op !
