Ted Kennedy ordered friends to keep quiet to police after Chappaquiddick to 'cover up' drowning death of Mary Jo Kopechne

I heard they got a great positive quote from Gloria Steinheim

by Anonymousreply 1October 26, 2022 2:00 AM

Well, DUH.

Did the DM previously think that Ted had, instead, asked his friends to find a bullhorn with which to impart the news that he drunkenly drove a car off a bridge and then climbed out leaving his ladyfriend passenger to die trapped in the water below?

by Anonymousreply 2October 26, 2022 2:06 AM

R2- Yes, we read all about his frantic efforts to summon help for his friend. 🙄

by Anonymousreply 3October 26, 2022 2:09 AM

So topical!

by Anonymousreply 4October 26, 2022 2:13 AM

Murdering kennedys

by Anonymousreply 5October 26, 2022 2:21 AM

Mary Jo did not drown. She suffocated in the car's air pocket while Ted skulked past homes close to the bridge from where he could have called rescue personnel.

Driving off the bridge was an accident. Allowing her to die breath by breath while he consulted his attorney and advisors turned it into murder. Had I been one of Mary Jo's parents there is no check the Kennedys could have written nor threat they could have made that would have silenced me.

by Anonymousreply 6October 26, 2022 2:25 AM

And did y'all hear?! Lincoln got shot by an actor!

by Anonymousreply 7October 26, 2022 2:28 AM

R7- Well I hope his friends responded better than Kennedy!

by Anonymousreply 8October 26, 2022 2:29 AM

Back in 2018, People magazine released a podcast about Chappaquiddick called Cover-Up. The journalist did look into different theories. One theory that has gone around for years is that Mary Jo's fellow Boiler Room girl Rosemary Keough was in the front seat with Ted and Mary Jo was drunk in the backseat.

by Anonymousreply 9October 26, 2022 2:45 AM

R9: How far did TK swim that night to get back to his hotel? Honestly, anything is possible because of the amount of time that passed before the accident was reported. There was also a rumor that Mary- Jo was pregnant.

by Anonymousreply 10October 26, 2022 2:48 AM

Breaking! Charles Manson had people killed!

by Anonymousreply 11October 26, 2022 2:52 AM

Its sad this girl died for her family, but the real losers in all this was not only Ted, but the American people, as it cost us the chance to have him as our President and he would have been a great President! Just like he was a great Senator, since the people of Mass had enough sense to re-elect him for the rest of his life!

by Anonymousreply 12October 26, 2022 3:11 AM

R6- She suffered an agonizing, slow, terof luge rifying death. TK swam/walked back to his hotel, went down for breakfast that morning all while this poor women slowly suffocated. He should have been charged with negligent homicide. If that had been my daughter I would have spent the remainder of my life making his life hell.

by Anonymousreply 13October 26, 2022 3:16 AM

This is the information that will finally get inflation under control!

by Anonymousreply 14October 26, 2022 3:20 AM

[quote] but the real losers in all this was not only Ted, but the American people, as it cost us the chance to have him as our President

Kennedys are like Samurai. They are entitled to kill peasants.

by Anonymousreply 15October 26, 2022 3:22 AM

Wow! Bet he won't run in 2024!

by Anonymousreply 16October 26, 2022 3:28 AM

What about that Lindbergh baby?

by Anonymousreply 17October 26, 2022 3:29 AM

Ripped from the headlines!!!!

by Anonymousreply 18October 26, 2022 3:31 AM

Just some Kennedy history. Amazing what they got away with.

by Anonymousreply 19October 26, 2022 3:35 AM

I fomented a deadly insurrection using my fellow constituents, Senators, Congressmen and my followers and tried to get the Vice President of The United States murdered on the steps of the Capitol and stole Top Secret Weapons Documents and I'm still free to golf and bang whores!

by Anonymousreply 20October 26, 2022 3:46 AM

[quote] Its sad this girl died for her family, but the real losers in all this was not only Ted, but the American people, as it cost us the chance to have him as our President and he would have been a great President!

Really? If you died in a submerged car, how would your parents feel? Oh, well, huge loss for us, but bigger loss for Ted. Geez.

by Anonymousreply 21October 26, 2022 3:51 AM

Link or it didn’t happen R7.

by Anonymousreply 22October 26, 2022 3:52 AM

R21, I call it as I see it and look at the big picture. Ted Kennedy should have been President and the fact that he wasn't was a loss for the country. Yes, that girl dying was sad, but only to her parents or people that knew her. Not really a big deal in the overall.

by Anonymousreply 23October 26, 2022 6:27 AM

Stop talking to yourself.

by Anonymousreply 24October 26, 2022 6:28 AM

R23 Yes, it was a big deal. What’s wrong with you?

by Anonymousreply 25October 26, 2022 6:49 AM

'Its sad this girl died for her family, but the real losers in all this was not only Ted, but the American people, as it cost us the chance to have him as our President and he would have been a great President!"

I have no words for this.

by Anonymousreply 26October 26, 2022 6:50 AM

I got chatting to a tour guide on Martha's Vineyard in 2019. Apparently the local scuttlebutt was Ted had been having an affair with a senator's wife and they had snuck off for some sexy time, Meanwhile, unknown to Ted, Mary Jo was sleeping drunk on the backseat. When the accident happened Ted and the Senator's wife got out and then he concentrated on getting her out of the picture, to avoid a scandal.

By the time anyone realised Mary Jo was in the car, she'd been long dead and there was no way Kennedy could explain what had happened.

I can't say if the rumour was true, but it kinda made sense.

by Anonymousreply 27October 26, 2022 6:55 AM

SO RELEVANT AS DEMOCRACY IS DYING

by Anonymousreply 28October 26, 2022 6:59 AM

I can't wait until Trump and Republican Christofascists take over!

Behavior like this will surely be corrected with complete personal and political transparency, and absolute compassion and selflessness!

by Anonymousreply 29October 26, 2022 7:01 AM

R29- What in the world does what happened decades ago have to do with the fascist republican party today?

by Anonymousreply 30October 26, 2022 7:12 AM

I can’t stand the Kennedys. White trash through and through.

by Anonymousreply 31October 26, 2022 7:15 AM

You can also thank Ted for Reagan after his Carter stunt.

by Anonymousreply 32October 26, 2022 7:16 AM

Ted Kennedy was a drunk and a whore.

by Anonymousreply 33October 26, 2022 7:19 AM

Scumbag.

by Anonymousreply 34October 26, 2022 7:21 AM

Ted Kennedy was the Archangel Michael compared to Donald Trump.

by Anonymousreply 35October 26, 2022 7:22 AM

R35- Who isn't?

by Anonymousreply 36October 26, 2022 7:25 AM

And in other breaking news, Rock Hudson is rumored to be “light in the loafers”, per Confidential Magazine….

by Anonymousreply 37October 26, 2022 7:27 AM

But his emails...

by Anonymousreply 38October 26, 2022 7:36 AM

Whenever I see Ted Kennedy's name, hear about the Kennedy's - meaning JFK, RFK, that whole "Camelot" period, I think of my mother.

She hated Ted - she believed he was responsible for Mary Jo's death and that he wasn't arrested, tried, convicted of her death because he was a Kennedy. She believed he was an abuser and Joan was the victim.

Of course, this was back in the 70s and her feelings were not common - much of the MSM were still bemoaning the death of JFK and RFK and repeating the mantra that America had lost so much because of the two assassinations.

Man, she was adamant that Ted was just an awful person and that the Kennedy's were routinely given a pass for their bad behavior by the media.

by Anonymousreply 39October 26, 2022 9:39 AM

always nice to hear from 1969

by Anonymousreply 40October 26, 2022 2:26 PM

The Kennedys were America's royal family and we should of had 3 successive Kennedy Presidencies. R39, your mother was senile!

by Anonymousreply 41October 26, 2022 2:27 PM

R27 that was the rumor that was going around at the time......Mary Jo K got sick at the party and went to lie down in the back of Ted's car......he didn't know she was there.....drove off the bridge and went back home......

And of course there was the joke that always got laughs......you don't like someone? Take them to a party and let Ted Kennedy drive them home!

by Anonymousreply 42October 26, 2022 3:20 PM

He panicked. It plagued his whole political career and prevented him from becoming president. He's dead now.

Not sure this has any relevance any more.

by Anonymousreply 43October 26, 2022 3:26 PM

Ted has an amazing Civil Rights legacy in the Senate.

by Anonymousreply 44October 26, 2022 3:27 PM

R41, God you're an idiot. Yes, my mother was senile, but not until the early 2000s. Mom knew how corrupt Joe Sr. was... that he had been withdrawn from England as ambassador because of his leanings toward Hitler. How JFK really did not accomplish much as president... that as a US senator from NY, RFK was a carpetbagger and he was not a nice man. As for Ted, well, I already explained and let's not forget his antics at the Democratic convention where he made a play for the nomination over Carter.

by Anonymousreply 45October 26, 2022 4:11 PM

I've been hearing about this 'air pocket' for decades. Is there any proof it existed? That the car didn't immediately fill with water? If there was an air pocket, why didn't Mary Jo swim out of the car instead of waiting for Ted to return?

by Anonymousreply 46October 26, 2022 4:29 PM

[QUOTE]Well, DUH.

The exact words I came to post.

by Anonymousreply 47October 26, 2022 4:38 PM

Let's be honest here, Kopechne was a nobody, the fact that she died is sad, but really only relevant to her family.

by Anonymousreply 48October 26, 2022 4:54 PM

[quote] let's not forget his antics at the Democratic convention where he made a play for the nomination over Carter.

Ted brushing off poor Jimmy around the speakers platform to end the party nominating convention with their clasped hands was one of the most public slaps a president ever publicly received from one of his own party.

𝑰𝒕'𝒔 𝒒𝒖𝒊𝒕𝒆 𝒐𝒅𝒅 𝒊𝒕 𝒅𝒐𝒆𝒔𝒏'𝒕 𝒔𝒆𝒆𝒎 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒐𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒖𝒃𝒆.

Strauss announced Kennedy’s name, and the hall drowned out all else with its roar. Kennedy walked into the hall “like an engine coming up the ramp,” ABC anchor Sam Donaldson said. He made his way through the crush of bodies around the stage, and up the three or four stairs onto the podium. Carter awaited him at the top. It was almost like he was a state official standing at the bottom of the stairs outside Air Force One, waiting for the president to come down and shake his hand. Kennedy’s mouth was taut, his eyes were dead, and his brow was slightly furrowed.

After Kennedy shook hands with others on the stage—Rosalynn, Amy and Vice President Walter Mondale—Carter made his move. He took a few steps toward center stage in front of the microphone. It was a clear attempt to bring Kennedy with him and to pose for the cameras, the two of them, hands together and aloft: a long-awaited, badly needed moment of victory for Carter.

Kennedy could not, would not do it. He realized what Carter was doing, and stayed where he was, a few paces away from the podium. He waved to the crowd, nodding his head in a rhythmic way in acknowledgment of them. Carter reached the microphone, apparently thinking or hoping that Kennedy was right behind him. He realized that Kennedy had not come with him, and looked over his left shoulder. He turned back, took a step back and to his left, and extended a hand to Kennedy for a handshake, but he did so with his hand almost at shoulder level. It was a clear invitation to take his hand and raise it high.

The announcers expected Kennedy to give the president what he wanted. “There it is, there’s the moment,” Reynolds said. “Let’s see if we—there it is.” Kennedy stepped forward and shook Carter’s hand, but he did not raise it, and his expression remained an almost somber one. His mouth remained closed, he let go of Carter’s hand, and then he raised his hand again to the crowd. “What we are still lacking,” Koppel said, “is that classical political photograph of the two men arm in arm, holding their hands up together.”

Kennedy shook Carter’s hand again, then he moved past him like he was at a rally and the president was just another nobody on the rope line waiting to shake his hand. He shook hands with Joan Mondale and a few other people behind Carter. The president continued applauding, and then turned back to the microphone, standing at the podium alone. He mouthed the words to the song being sung in the hall. He was by himself.

Kennedy should have been the nominee in 1980. Carter was trounced by Reagan and deserved it!

by Anonymousreply 50October 26, 2022 5:57 PM

If he was a drunk and a whore he would have fit in here. He would have just needed a caftan and a pint of Ben and Jerrys

by Anonymousreply 51October 26, 2022 6:24 PM

Joe Sr. was not pro-Hitler. He was a staunch isolationist. He resigned the ambassador’s post to leave England ahead of what he thought was a likely defeat. Good for us the FDR had better ideas.

by Anonymousreply 52October 26, 2022 6:42 PM

[quote] How far did TK swim that night to get back to his hotel? Honestly, anything is possible because of the amount of time that passed before the accident was reported. There was also a rumor that Mary- Jo was pregnant.

IIRC, it was about a mile. In the podcast, it's mentioned that Mary Jo wasn't a huge a Ted Kennedy, she had worked on Bobby's campaign and liked Bobby a lot. In the podcast, it was mentioned that after Bobby's death, Ethel Kennedy offered Mary Jo a job to be a governess for her 11 kids. Mary Jo had no interest in it and turned her down. Mary Jo also was dating some guy in the military around the time of her death. Below is a link to the podcast, I might have gotten some details wrong as it's been a few years since I listened to it. I think I'll probably do a re-listen soon because I work from home and mostly listen to podcasts or audiobooks if I'm not in meetings. I liked the podcast, but the one thing I didn't like was there a bit too much focus on Leo Damore who wrote the book Senatorial Privilege. Damore relied heavily on info from Joe Gargan. I always got the sense that Gargan probably didn't reveal everything to Damore.

Mary Jo Kopechne was a baby eating child molester! And John John will be Vice Pres with Trump!

by Anonymousreply 54October 26, 2022 8:09 PM

Mary Jo Kopechne's name comes up quite a bit in some JFK assassination conspiracy theories because she was tenant of Bobby Baker who was a political advisor to LBJ.

by Anonymousreply 55October 26, 2022 8:37 PM

I really don't care, do u?

Still vote Democrat, no matter what!

by Anonymousreply 56October 26, 2022 8:40 PM

I read that Teddy asked his cousin Joe Gargan to take the rap. Gargan obviously refused.

by Anonymousreply 57October 26, 2022 9:13 PM

And yet Trump could shoot someone on 5th Ave...

by Anonymousreply 58October 26, 2022 9:21 PM

I read that Trump asked the Secretary of State of Georgia to "Find11,780 votes, which is one more than we need".

by Anonymousreply 59October 26, 2022 9:22 PM

Start your own Trump thread for fuck’s sake, R58.

by Anonymousreply 60October 26, 2022 9:33 PM

I still haven't talked to anyone about it

by Anonymousreply 61October 26, 2022 10:56 PM

Ted was a great Senator, one of the giants in the Senate. Thanks to the people of Massachusetts, who had enough sense to look past Chappaquiddick. Too bad the American people as a whole didn't have the same sense on 1980.

by Anonymousreply 62October 27, 2022 2:19 AM

It's kind of amazing that Joan (and Ethel) are still around and kicking, although probably just barely.

by Anonymousreply 63October 27, 2022 2:59 AM

JHC r6, r13, that's horrifying. I had no idea.

by Anonymousreply 64October 27, 2022 3:09 AM

John Farrar, the fire rescue captain who retrieved the body on July 19, testified he believed that Kopechne stayed alive for up to half an hour in an air pocket, and ultimately suffocated in the submerged vehicle. A petition to exhume the body for autopsy was denied by a Pennsylvania court.

The same day we landed on the moon. How's that for timing.

I believe Ted Kennedy was a psychopath I also think Newt Gingrich, Roger Stone and John McCain are and were psychopaths as well. It's so bizarre that the politicos the media love the most were generally the most awful as people.

by Anonymousreply 66October 27, 2022 10:57 AM

This news is half a century old.

by Anonymousreply 67October 27, 2022 11:42 AM

It's not even news. "Scandal plagued public figured asks friends to keep quiet" ranks with "water is wet" for news worthiness. The fact that it's 5 decades old and about a person who died 14 years ago is completely inane. This article is a joke. What prompted them to run this?

by Anonymousreply 68October 27, 2022 12:22 PM

How many dead horses are you going to beat at one time, OP?

A car accident in 1969?

The driver has been dead for 13 years, he died in 2009.

Let it go.
