He is a cutie and much more exciting than Yale boy. I like his self-proclaimed "Quadgod" swagger.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | October 23, 2022 11:22 PM |
LOL the coverage was all about Gracie Gold. The only NAME skater in the event. NBC completely rearranged coverage to show het short program.

When is Nathan Chen coming out?...He is peddling Dental now...Fem Dental.....LoL....I love how nobody ever asks the closet cases about a "girlfriend"...
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 24, 2022 12:45 AM |
Male skaters get no respect in America…did Chen get any endorsements?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 24, 2022 1:59 AM |
He did hit the trifecta of breakfast cereal endorsements for Fruit Loops, Fruity Pebbles and Fruit Brute.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 24, 2022 2:09 AM |
I actually think Ilia could have a chance if marketed properly, now that Yuzuru has retired and there's an opening for a new star. Nathan just isn't very charismatic and he seems too focused on his studies to pursue fame.
But it is still early in Ilia's career and it's probably not wise to build him up too much before he proves himself to be somewhat consistent.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | October 24, 2022 2:10 AM |
R10 = He hawked Jurassic World in a commercial...He got a Coke Commercial four years ago. Too bad he didn't come out he could have gotten all kinds of endorsements. Shame is expensive.

Nathan Chen. Skater. Studied Ballet....99.4% gay.....VIDEO. Lisping it up with Adam Rippon in an old interview.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 24, 2022 2:28 AM |
You guys are horrible. Not every skater is gay.

by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 24, 2022 12:51 PM |
I think Nathan is straight and boring as hell. His ugly as shit costumes should be a big clue. There are enough queens in US figure skating...he isn't one of them.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 24, 2022 1:10 PM |
Go back to Russia, Ilia!
by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 24, 2022 1:27 PM |

goes too far with makeup on performances, looks like a young caitlyn jenner in early transition.

^ every shot of the kid with an open mouth. I suppose it might be a smile. He looks way too "special" - only a candid shot paused in an interview where he looks normal seems to be floating around.. the rest of the time he has afs face

Bitch stole my look!
by Anonymous | reply 31 | October 24, 2022 6:11 PM |
I don't know if figure skating can make a comeback in the US. Japan for singles; Russia for women and pairs; I guess US is doing ok for ice dance but it's just a different world. There was a time when many people watched the Wide World of Sports on the weekend and they'd cycle figure skating in and out, so the ordinary person watched it.
But it has too much competition now - gaming, Facebook, other Internet, Netflix type streaming. I mean, the one streaming service for figure skating - NBC Peacock, won't even let you rewatch - or even take a bathroom break and come back to pick up where you left off. Nobody gives a shit about it. And in MAGA America, half the country thinks it's too stupid a sport, and women are watching youtube influencers or whatever the hell they do - there's a hardcore group of fans but it's nothing like what it was. They struggle to sell tickets for the few ice shows they still have.
Sad.

After Sandhu, Joubert, Lambiel and Kevin Van Der Perren retired, I lost interest in the sport. The women were somewhat interesting. But for me, the boy skaters were both eye candy and the better athletes. And they had personalities. As much as Johnny Weir got on my nerves, he wasn’t dull.

R34 What about that Asian one?
by Anonymous | reply 36 | October 24, 2022 8:06 PM |
Early days in the season, I know, but that was a LOT of shite skating at Skate America. And good-looking men were few and far between. Nice to see Tenley Albright is still with us, though.
I could only find the mens and pairs events on USA Network; I thought Peacock might have dance and women's, but if they're there they're hidden. I haaaate that the Olympic Channel is now gone. Figure skating and curling were always there; now I have to scrounge around to find them.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | October 24, 2022 8:24 PM |
I am an Insider and 85% of the men are gay, including coaches, judges, officials, journalists.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | October 24, 2022 9:01 PM |
R20, no, Lambiel didn’t choreograph Ilia’s programs. Juris Razgulajevs for the short and Shae Lynn Bourne for the free. He and Jeff Buttle choreographed Koshiro Shimada’s programs though. And Jason Brown choreographed Daniel Grassl.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | October 24, 2022 9:51 PM |
I think Peacock only allows you to watch the events live. And after that, they're gone. It's ridiculous. How much could it cost to score the most recent competition on there? People pay for that streaming service. And we're talking Skate America out of Boston just last weekend!
by Anonymous | reply 40 | October 24, 2022 10:00 PM |
* STORE the most recent competition
by Anonymous | reply 41 | October 24, 2022 10:00 PM |
The new kid Malinin hunches, just like Nathan Chen. I guess the men's event should be called Jumping now instead of Skating.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | October 24, 2022 10:02 PM |
When ABC did skating, it was quality stuff. The they had some sort of issues with ISU didn’t they?
by Anonymous | reply 43 | October 24, 2022 10:43 PM |
I'm not sure Ilia Malinin is sexy enough to break through (to fame). He's 17 so maybe there's still time but going by his face, I'd guess he was 12.
And his legs are so so SO long - I read that his dad's like that, so I'm not sure the rest of him will stretch up to balance him out. He's just 5'6" at the moment (same height as Nathan Chen but I think Chen is better looking - more grown up and manly - Ilia's not femme but he's childlike)
Fabulous jumper though so he'll probably rack up the trophies until some part(s) of his skeleton wears out. I read landing a quad axel for him is 800 lbs of force hitting the ice - somewhere around that. And my god, he's so spindly! Though maybe being extremely light will help - wonder if he's over 100 lbs.

At minute 1:35 in R46, is that a true Bielmann? Or can you only hold onto your foot above your head?

I'm just happy that I can cheer on a white kid for Team USA.
First time in over a decade.

He looks “special”.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | October 25, 2022 7:47 AM |
R44 I find Ilia more likeable and genuine than Yuzuru, who still acts like he is a Toddlers and Tiaras contestant. He's growing into his looks and has potential to build a decent fanbase, imo. Chen was too boring (and his shoulders are too narrow).
by Anonymous | reply 51 | October 25, 2022 11:14 AM |
Peacock stores Premier League soccer/football matches for at least a couple of weeks, I think. Of course, the PL has a far bigger audience, even in the US, than figure skating, but it would be nice for Peacock to keep ISU events around for at least that amount of time. Who can be bothered trying to figure out when a skating event is on live (never mind where you can find it) when you're in a different time zone than the event?
by Anonymous | reply 52 | October 25, 2022 6:18 PM |
I like Nathan, and most of his outfits. He looks good just skating in black pants and a T shirt. Hot ass.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | October 25, 2022 6:23 PM |
Were they holding Skate America in a school hockey rink or something? A few rows of bleachers. Remember when skating would sell out 25,000 seat auditoriums? Someone needs a knee whacking.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | October 25, 2022 6:26 PM |
How are skaters going to make a living if the ice shows don’t sell?

R55 Prostitution
by Anonymous | reply 56 | October 25, 2022 6:39 PM |
According to Wikipedia, Nathan has 11 endorsement deals. One is Toyota - you always see him driving a new car.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | October 25, 2022 6:39 PM |
R55, the luckiest ones get skating shows in Japan in the off season. There are dozens of the things and they sell out.
But basically, figure skating looks doomed in the US. Or will be a niche sport, like gymnastics, for rich parents to spoil their little darlings with. It costs a fortune for rink time, coaching, costumes, travel. And there's not much future in it, but then, that's true for other sports that toddle on.

That's what happens when you have over a decade of no white kids in "Skate America."
No one's interested any more.
Maybe this kid might get butts back in the seats.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | October 25, 2022 7:09 PM |
I simply can't get excited about skating anymore.
