Your Go-To-Remedies Against a Cold

Well?

I came down with a strong head cold: Clogged sinuses, sore throat, bit of coughing. No covid, still have a good appetite and can taste everything, no headaches.

What are your go-to remedies against the common cold? I just gargled with diluted vinegar.

Chicken noodle soup.

by Anonymousreply 8October 23, 2022 6:08 PM

According to Consumer Reports the best thing for a cold is not chicken soup but fruits and vegetables because they contain a lot of beneficial compounds including antioxidants that can boost immune strength which can lessen the severity of the cold.

My chicken noodle soup is so healthy, it really helps. I put so many veggies, use chicken bones and don't peel anything. I can barely get the lid on. Then take out all the cooked veggies and chicken and put in pruified water, celery, carrots and shreaded chicken and noodles. Delish!!!

Zicam rapid melts. Take one within a couple of hours of very first symptoms (worth keeping in car, purse, etc.) Make sure you allow it to dissolve in mouth. Do not eat or drink anything for fifteen minutes after use. Repeat every two hours.

Alka Seltzer has always stopped an incoming cold in its tracks

by Anonymousreply 12October 23, 2022 6:38 PM

R11 Yes, I’ve stopped many incipient colds with zinc gluconate losenges (a component of Zicam and Cold-Eze losenges). Zinc stimulates Natural Killer cells in the immune system that can kill virus-infected cells (although it is not known if that capability is the mechanism of protection by the losenges).

Plenty of water, sleep, exercise, daily vitamins. I also use zinc, as some have mentioned above. I make a batch of fire cider every year, too. It probably isn't necessary with the zinc & vitamins I'm using, but I keep it on hand anyway.

Vitamin D, C and Zinc. A nurse told me this.

by Anonymousreply 21October 24, 2022 2:19 AM

Elderberry tincture under the tongue (no alcohol) and yin chao tablets as soon as you feel something coming on. I hadn’t had a cold for several years thanks to that regimen. I did just get over a terrible cold recently, and by the time I realized it was more than a scratchy throat from lots of A/C and talking too much it was too late.

by Anonymousreply 22October 24, 2022 4:09 AM

May I add: Sucking on (clean!) ice cubes. Numbs the throat a bit, keeps you hydrated, gives me a little of energy.

Do whatever your Dutch granny would've recommended, much if it already mentioned here.

In Germany, they have some over-the-counter things (e.g., Meditonsin) that work like magic when you feel something coming on, but once it's there it's just rest, fluids, menthol oils at night to help breathing.

Emergen-C works for me.

by Anonymousreply 25October 24, 2022 7:11 AM

R10 the moment you heat it, at least the vitamin C is gone. (I don't know whether other Vitamins are heat resistant.) I bet it tastes great though and makes you feel better, so the goal is accomplished.
