Don’t they think of these things when they design them?
Brooklyn now dominated by the Tower of Sauron

Well, pardon me, Dorothy, but we can't all come from places as socially acceptable as…Brooklyn.

Is there a giant eye? No.
Does it look anything like the tower in LOTR? No.
Does OP look at two guys and declare them twins because they have the same hair colour. Probably.

One Hanson Place used to be the tallest building in Brooklyn. Ughhh.. the memories.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | October 23, 2022 3:32 PM |
Are you sure you don't mean the tower of Isengard?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | October 23, 2022 4:09 PM |
Imagine all the grift that had to go down for the zoning changes to make this allowable. It's like the horrible pencil buildings that have gone up in Manhattan in recent years. It's bad aesthetically, functionally and it provides no economic benefit to the surrounding neighborhood.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | October 23, 2022 4:09 PM |
There are a lot of ugly buildings in NYC, what's one more?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 23, 2022 4:11 PM |
r5, is right. Your real beef is in the zoning boards that are on the take to allow these ridiculous buildings to be built. What's going on there?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | October 23, 2022 4:14 PM |
While real estate is all about money, of course, I firmly believe that these developers take perverted joy in making something as ugly and fuck-you as possible. It's the same pleasure they'd probably take in letting their dog shit on a neighbor's yard, or fucking a rival's wife, or pissing into an enemy's air conditioner duct. They're just aggressively marking territory like a tomcat spraying.
Bear in mind that the most famous NYC real estate developer is Donald Trump, and that gives you an idea of the wanton aggression and resentment that fuels these defectives.

Obviously. Skyscrapers are phallic symbols and developers and architects compete for the longest erection. 🤣

^ Pencil dicks are NOT impressive. Give me a short fatty with style any day 😛
by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 23, 2022 4:31 PM |
R9, sure, but it used to be considered more prestigious to create a beautiful and elegant building than an ugly one. Witness the Woolworth Building (at one time the tallest building in the world), or the Empire State Building, or the Chrysler Building.
Now, the more hideous, the better.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 23, 2022 4:34 PM |
The dark color is a bad choice. Sombre and menacing. I agree with OP.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | October 23, 2022 4:37 PM |
Complaining about tall buildings being built in freaking New York City is silly to me. Build baby build I'd say. Now York has actually been slow in adding housing. Part of the reasons why rents are so high, not enough has been built for the demand.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | October 23, 2022 4:40 PM |
R13 = idiot who thinks these buildings help housing costs go down

[quote]Give me a short fatty with style any day
Why thank you r10! I heartily return the compliment!
by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 23, 2022 4:43 PM |
^ This is what I'm talking about, classic phallic, length, girth, straight with sturdy purpose. Dominant to everything around it... Is it getting warm in here? 😜

Skyscrapers with a taper are just more pleasing to the eye as this photo from Chicago shows
One of the reasons the Twin Towers were so controversial was because they did not taper
by Anonymous | reply 17 | October 23, 2022 4:57 PM |
R13 that isn’t how it works at all. There are over 50k lower income apartments vacant in all of NYC now because landlords don’t wanna rent them out because those people lower the value of the property and then the area as well.
Rents are sky-high because landlords are keeping them that way.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | October 23, 2022 5:03 PM |
@r17, Those are great pics of Chicago. Are you Barry?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 23, 2022 5:10 PM |
These ultratall buildings also have remarkably low structural lives... 100 years max. I don't know why anyone is parking investment money in them.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 23, 2022 5:11 PM |
The builders get their money back when the units are sold, if its an apartment tower. AND the buyers get their money laundered. Nobody much cares about this shit 20 years from construction, let alone 100.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 23, 2022 5:13 PM |
R21- Agree. I mostly meant overseas buyers who park money in condos and never move in.

Buildings in Brooklyn were kept shorter than Manhattan with reason. Anytime there has been an earthquake in NY, it is always strongest under Brooklyn, moreso than Manhattan. If we ever have another earthquake than isnt just a light shake, those new skyscrapers aren’t standing.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | October 23, 2022 5:18 PM |
R22 yes. And oversea buyers shouldn’t be allowed to buy the way they are. There should be a limit. A LOT of these new buildings are owned by people from China.

It won't be the last. Look at London.

Tall buildings in NYC had to be approved to be within the zoning laws and comply with the environmental impact standards. Both the zoning requirements and the environmental impact have been obliterated thanks to corrupted NYC boards and commissions. For decades tall buildings had to have the taller floors scaled back in order to provide sunlight in the direct and adjacent streets below . Also, you could not build a building above a certain height unless the prospective building was on multiple adjoining properties. Today they are building these monstrosities on one or two lots. Basically none of the previous standards apply anymore. Despite the population congestion NYC's skyline was always aesthetically pleasant, now it's turned to shit.

And the new transplants think this is beautiful. Wtf. They really destroyed this city.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 23, 2022 6:17 PM |
There's no beauty in skyscrapers, only hideousness. Buildings taller than 7 floors are monstrocity.
