Why are Midwesterners considered "nice?"

I’m a Canadian and have always found southerners and midwesterners to be the kindest Americans. They have good manners and I like them more than Canadians.

No matter what their geographic location, I believe that people (unless clinically deranged) will instinctively behave well towards others who exhibit politeness and kindness. It goes both ways.

Being blunt or impatient like east coasters are far lesser evils than wanting a fanatically religious or Klan-modelled state government like middle America.

They're not. Actually in Iowa they are actually really nice, but the upper Midwest is filled with passive aggressive losers from both parties.

"Midwestern nice" specifically refers to politeness and surface-level helpfulness in public. It was never intended to mean that Midwesterners were nice behind closed doors.

A lot of the Midwest is purple rather than red. Yes they do have some far righters. I have found them to be much nicer people generally than people in say, D.C. or Boston. I may for the most part be more politically aligned with those cities but the constant rancid, sullen sourness does get tiring sometimes. As for the so-called fakeness, I'm aware that the cashier ringing up my bottled water is not my newest best friend just because they asked me how my day was. But it beats a pointlessly nasty attitude.

Same with Canadians. The notion that they are so nice and polite is *so* far off the mark. They are also ignorant racists. I own an international travel-based company with a Canadian clientele, and I consider them among the worst.

At least on the east coast people are more direct and rude to your face which translates into knowing what they want/how they feel.

Chicagoan here. For what it's worth, I think Chicagoans are overall more pleasant but less friendly than New Yorkers if that makes sense. I think Wisconsinites are much friendlier (but more rough around the edges) than Minnesotans. To be honest, the only flat-out humiliating state in the Midwest is Indiana. Truly America's nasty armpit. If Florida didn't have Miami and it was in the Midwest, it would be Indiana. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. It's the most blood-red state in the region and it's like walking into a time warp if you visit any of the towns/cities in the state.

Southerners are the nicest by far and Midwesterner’s are second. I know on the inside most people are assholes but I’d rather deal with a person who has manners.
