His voice is horrendous and his lyrics sound like schizo rants. Why is he so vaunted?
Bob Dylan fucking sucks

You know what you look like to me, with your good observations and your cheap projections? You look like a rube. A well scrubbed, hustling rube with a little taste. Good nutrition has given you some length of bone, but you're not more than one generation from poor white trash, are you, R9 ? And that accent you've tried so desperately to shed? Pure West Virginia. What's your father, dear? Is he a coal miner? Does he stink of the lamp? You know how quickly the boys found you... all those tedious sticky fumblings in the back seats of cars... while you could only dream of getting out... getting anywhere... getting all the way to the DATALOUNGE.

Dylan seems to be divisive. Back in the early days of the internet I frequented a forum where a couple of straight men would constantly post Dylan lyrics. In full. Over and over again. It got fucking annoying. There was no commentary either. So it seemed like Dylan was expressing their feelings or something? And they wanted the forum to know. But they couldn't articulate it for themselves.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | October 23, 2022 5:50 PM |
Reminder here that Bob Dylan got the Nobel prize for literature. The only songwriter to do so..
by Anonymous | reply 24 | October 23, 2022 6:00 PM |
For decades now, I've said that Dylan should have been forced to write songs for other people, and not allowed to perform in public.
He really is a fantastic songwriter, or was, but he's the worst singer ever
by Anonymous | reply 25 | October 23, 2022 6:13 PM |
OP is worse than Hitler.
But seriously, Dylan just may be my favorite musical act of all time. Yes, his voice is not pretty or dynamic like many others singers, but it suits his music. You don't have to care about his singing or even his style, but Dylan by no means sucks. There are several popular singers I dislike, but I'll be damned if I'm going to waste time and energy starting a thread about them.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 23, 2022 7:39 PM |
Dylan challenged our ideas---of society, of authority, of love, of Folk music.
There are Pop singers of pure voice (e.g , Celine, Mariah, Whitney, ); there are Pop singers of excellent voice (e.g., Elvis, Roy O, Gene Pitney, Michael, Dusty); there are Pop singers of smooth voice (e.g., Johnny Mathis, Dino, Gerry Marsden, Buble'); there are Pop singers of Pop-Rock "gritty" vocals (e.g., Lennon, Mike Smith, Manfred Mann, Melissa Etheridge, Ray); and there are those Pop singers whose voices challenge us to really listen (e.g., Neil Young, Joe Cocker, Janis).
And then there are the geniuses.

r10 Go to YT and listen to "Moonshiner". Then listen to any of the 500 covers. Cat Power did a good one. Bob Dylan can't sing. He won a freaking Nobel Prize for POETRY. Listen to the lyrics. It's not Harry Styles or some shit.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 24, 2022 2:44 AM |
Also OP, you started this thread to dunk on pretentious hipsters with the list of hipster accouterments, I live in Albuquerque, so I can only get a little fancy, but I do have some tube amplifiers and I do listen to vinyl. You didn't mention that on your list dummie. Also Philistinism is a curable disease. You don't have to jump right into Proust. The Russians are good, and you can't go wrong with Saramago. Halldor Laxness, or the postmodernists if you are allergic to old dusky stuff like Dylan.

[Quote]So it seemed like Dylan was expressing their feelings or something?
There's a Let's Be thread idea: artist types that a certain kind of straight guy likes to project himself into: Dylan, Bukowski, David Foster Wallace...it's Live Laugh Love for het dudes and usually about as deep.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | October 24, 2022 4:55 AM |
OP, don’t you understand musical lineage? Dylan is a huge deal because he’s a direct descendant of the great legend Woody Guthrie.
Guthrie’s writing formula is considered the most prolific folk/Americana singer ever, based on the size of his catalogue and how clever his songwriting was, even in its pared down simplicity. In addition, Guthrie was the American godfather of punk rock, Bob understood this and carried that torch forward too.
Dylan is also legendary because his star rose when he was sooooooo young, imagine a male folk singer rising to that level now. But folk was more edgy back then, it was about making social statements and leading people toward a new vision of the future — man do we need that right about now.
To close, I agree his voice is quite ugly, but I oddly still enjoy it because while the tone may be rough, his ability to emote and express the story of the song transcends everything else. Make no mistake, I suspect he’s a horrible human being….he still has no relationship with his son and grandchildren (if memory serves?), many women have commented on overwhelming halitosis. He is also truly fucking weird.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | October 24, 2022 5:32 AM |
The best example of Dylan as angry punk rocker is this story (though there are dozens of insane stories about him). But this is one of my favs….
The “folkies” were furious at Dylan for switching to electric guitar, and like a woke mob, they taunted him during a life performance. He responded. He knew he was evolving as an artist and that these shitheads were trying to ruin that because they were “purists”. Dylan was only a purist to Guthrie.

This performance at Sinatra's 80th birthday celebration epitomizes to me what an exceptional and truly great singer Dylan is. Sure his voice is thin and nasal by conventional standards, but no one else could have delivered such a truly awesome rendition of the song. Evidenced by the dumbstruck audience.

[quote]he still has no relationship with his son and grandchildren (if memory serves?)
Your memory serves you wrong. Bob's kids all live close to him and each other, he has a "World's Greatest Grandpa" bumper sticker on his SUV, he sang at one of the grandkid's preschool in Calabasas, and has been described in interviews as "loving," "wise," "a hero to me for all the right reasons," and "my best friend" by 3 of his 6 children (Jesse, Jakob, and Desiree). Some of his grandkids (Levi, Pablo) also spoke highly of him in interviews, as has his son in law, Peter Himmelman.
It might all be bullshit to deflect us from their private lives and Jakob has said they're dysfunctional like any other family, but he also said nobody was beaten or molested, so Bob's greatest crime against them was probably neglect (he's always on the road) and being a poor role model by slapping their mom in front of them.
