Julie Christie

Zhivago is visually beautifully, but dramatically it’s kind of a snore (and given that it’s set against the Russian Revolution, that’s a dubious feat. The characters may have more depth in the novel (never read it), but there’s not much development in the characters, including Christie’s Lara. Sharif, handsome and appealing, lacks the poet-hero qualities needed. I like Lean as a director and Bolt as a writer, and when it shows up on TCM, it passes a few winter hours amiably. But I think Christie’s win for “Darling” was a combination of her being a refreshing “New Woman,” the glamour of “Darling” as social critique-lite, and her physical Beaty. I always enjoy her and think she should have for “Away from Her,” and certainly deserved her nominations for “McCabe and Mrs. Muller” and “Afterglow,” and should have been recognized for “Return of the Soldier” and others.

Straight guys went batshit for her in the 60s, my brother included. I always found her coarse looking.

Are both the Julies gay or just the one?

She was fun in "Billy Liar" a couple of years before "Zhivago." I love many things about "Zhivago," but her performance isn't one of them.

She has a 2-minute cameo as Brad Pitt's mother Thetis in "Troy".

Julie was best friends with actress Sharon Tate. Julie gave friend Sharon Tate a copy of Thomas Hardy's novel "Tess of the d'Urbervilles" with the inscription "For my Hardy heroine" (Julie had recently become a Thomas Hardy heroine in Far from the Madding Crowd (1967)).

Christie was also great in Darling.

Loved her in “Don’t Look Now”, one of my favorite films of all time—she gave an understated but nervy performance in that film that, to me, is unforgettable.

Enjoyed her in The Go-Between, too

Loved her in DARLING

Darling is a superior film to Dr Zhivago. Julie is always wonderful so it doesn't matter which film she wins awards for.
