The only song that wasn't good ironically was "You're so Vain". As for Tapestry, Carole King sang Smackwater Jack, Way Over Yonder, Where You Lead, and Natural Woman safe safe safe and bland bland bland. The singers that covered those songs did a bang up job compared to her soulless renditions.

"Why" was not a hit-hit, it was a regional hit back when radio stations could play records they liked and their audiences liked. It got spins in urban areas. It also made it to college campuses, my guess is because when played loud it is kinda reggae-ish. Drunk college kids love reggae.

Here's "Why." It's from the 1982 movie SOUP FOR ONE. As I didn't see the movie, I didn't know the song existed until I got the CLOUDS IN MY COFFEE box set in 1995. I'm of two minds. One, it would have been nice to hear the song when it was first recorded, and two, it was nice to have some surprises on the box set.

I was never a big fan of Why.

It is one of two songs that Carly Simon has said she sang exactly as the producers asked her to, not in the way she wanted to.

The other is "So Many People to Love." She said the producer had produced Janet Jackson and wanted Carly to sing it in that same style, with a very light voice.

She was fortunate to have a stone cold classic like “That’s the Way I’ve Always Heard it Should Be” as her first single. A great introduction to the world.

One of my favorites is "Love of My Life," from the movie THIS IS MY LIFE, another one I didn't hear until CLOUDS IN MY COFFEE came out in 1995.

In this 2007 version of "Love of My Life," she replaces "Woody Allen" with "Mia Farrow" as something/someone she loves.
