CARLY SIMON appreciation thread

Let's send dear Carly some much needed light and love right now. She has received only intermittent plaudits at Datalounge, and disgracefully, has only won two 2 Grammys. That's the same voting body that has awarded Taylor Swift 11 Grammys. Even so, Carly has -- graciously -- never kicked Taylor Swift in the vagina bone, proving she is a far better Christian that Datalounge deserves.

Yet she has all the ingredients of a Datalounge icon: she's from a wealthy, East Coast elite family, she lied about her age almost all her life (she's 79 but everyone tells her she looks 75), she obscured her spit of Afro-Cuban heritage until it was chic to be mixed race, she stole James Taylor from Joni Mitchell and rode his enormous hog for a decade, later she married a closeted gay man as penance, and she was a famously good friend to Jackie On Assistance.

In the midst of the drama, she wrote fantastic songs and made incredible music that enchanted our lives. I was born in 1968 and I know I am not the only Datalounger for whom Carly's music provided the soundtrack of our lives of love, joy, discovery, exuberance, romance, longing, lust, carousing, sex, shenanigans, hedonism, camaraderie, betrayal, danger, envy, fear, enmity, depression, anxiety, rage, loss, sadness, acceptance, resignation, reconciliation, inebriation and serenity.

Let's lift her up! What is your favorite Carly Simon song? Share your positive thoughts and impressions.

Not to hijack a thread from this Simon woman... but can somebody please explain the origin of the Stevie Nicks "kicked in the cuntbone" narrative?

I did Google "Stevie Nicks cuntbone", but the only results are DataLounge threads and porn sites.

Thanks in advance.

Bless your heart, OP. That’s the cuntiest “tribute” to anyone I’ve ever seen here at DL Well done.

by Anonymousreply 5October 23, 2022 12:07 AM

R3, maybe "Stevie Nicks' Favorite Coke Spoon" will chime in. The takeaway is that Carly did NOT kick anyone in the vagina bone. Stevie did -- allegedly -- and y'all talk about her night and day around here.

OMG. I was not going to admit this because I am really classy. It was on my mind because of a post I made earlier today in a different thread. But the first time I ever bottomed for a guy I'd made a mixtape to prepare for the occasion, and "Two Hot Girls (On A Hot Summer Night)" is the song I remember most vividly from that painful evening.

It is still one of my favorite Carly songs.

by Anonymousreply 15October 23, 2022 12:25 AM

by Anonymousreply 18October 23, 2022 12:57 AM

My friends from college they're all married now

They have their houses and their lawns

They have their silent noons, tearful nights, angry dawns

Their children hate them for the things they're not

They hate themselves for what they are

And yet they drink, they laugh

Close the wound, hide the scar

She drank a pint of your rum

And later when you told me

You said she was a bore

Oh, sometimes I wish

Oft times I wish

That I never, never knew

Some of those secrets of yours

Dear mother the struggle is over now

And your house is up for sale

We divided your railway watches

Among the four of us

I fought over the pearls

With the other girls

But it was all a metaphor

For what is wrong with us

by Anonymousreply 24October 23, 2022 1:10 AM

I heard that Andrea had an exquisite triple-strand pearl necklace.

Carly suggested that she and her sisters split the strands, so they could each have part of their mother's necklace.

But Joey (Joanna) claimed it would ruin the "integrity" of the pearls.

by Anonymousreply 25October 23, 2022 1:13 AM

[quote] So you still get hard when you hear that one, huh?

Ha! Not exactly. I love the song but it is nostalgia and not at all "erotic." On the emotional spectrum, my first time bottoming is closer to the first time I got mugged at gunpoint. But I do remember how much I liked the guy, wanted his body on mine and wanted to get him off, the rest was like someone shoving a red-hot poker up my...well, you know.

Does Carly have a song for that? "Haven't Got Time for The Pain"?

by Anonymousreply 26October 23, 2022 1:34 AM

Where's "Legend In Your Own Time", the very definition of haunting.

When "The Right Thing To Do" was released as a single, WFIL in Philadelphia played it as a two-sided hit with the flip side "We Have No Secrets" getting more airplay. WHNS was a great song, should have been the A-side.

Wow, r29!!! I've never heard "In Pain" but it pretty closely matches the experience. Carly's caterwauling is pretty close to how I must have sounded that evening. It's even relevant lyrically because OF COURSE that bastard ended up dumping me. Because I was a terrible bottom and because he is, all these years later, mostly straight.

by Anonymousreply 51October 23, 2022 3:41 AM

I don't expect humility

But what about some good old dishonest modesty

James Taylor was hot for like 3 years, 1977-79, before he had that hideous unibrow and by ‘85 he looked like a balding, sunburnt, middle aged homeless guy.

by Anonymousreply 67October 23, 2022 4:19 AM

Carly is a sophisticated lyricist but she was/is purposely "accessible." Carly got the big hits and the big d*ck. Both evaded Joni, and at times Joni made indelicate comments about other female singer/songwriters. As a result, she did sometimes appear bitter. To her credit, Carly has always been lavish in her praise of Joni.

For me, it's not an either/or because I love them both.

by Anonymousreply 68October 23, 2022 4:23 AM

Carly wrote the ultimate shade song ‘You’re So Vain’

Joni or Taylor Swift or anyone else will never even approach it by a mile.

by Anonymousreply 69October 23, 2022 4:23 AM

Dishonest Modesty is a song that could have been written by the best bitches on Datalounge.

by Anonymousreply 70October 23, 2022 4:24 AM

I love Carly Simon. I started listening to her when I was ten and I have every album through Hello Big Man. The two best songs she ever did were "Libby" from her Another Passenger album. I love "Never Been Gone" from her "Spy" album. The best album side is, you really should try it - it's the B-side of her Anticipation album. Share the End, The Garden, Three Days, Julie Through the Glass, and I can't recall the name of the last song. A book called "Girls Like Us" is a home-run bio of Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon and Carole King.

by Anonymousreply 71October 23, 2022 4:24 AM

Joni Mitchell is highly overrated. She’s a poet, but a melodic musical artist she is not. Her wristslitter songs are not something you choose to listen to. She’s an acquired taste of aspirational yuppies who want to seem like they’re in the know, she’s a female Bob Dylan and that’s not a compliment.

by Anonymousreply 75October 23, 2022 4:33 AM

R68 - I love Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon too. You're right about both. Except wow Joni Mitchell has been spectacularly critical and acidic over the years. She called the music industry "a cesspool" (Hello hello), she has said many awful things over the years. Wow. It's never stopped me from listening to her. The only album I do not have is Taming the Tiger. But wow, she's a poster girl Scorpio. She has said terrible things about her husbands and boyfriends, as her ex Don Elias has said - "Joni rewrites History." Carly is by far the better person but Carly has always been a light weight with her songwriting compared to Joni Mitchell. A couple threads have mentioned Stevie Nicks. Woo hoo Stevie Nicks. I'm a gay male with musical taste of a lesbian. Woo Hoo Joni, Carly, Melanie, Stevie, Sinead, Rickie Lee, Indigo Girls, Amy Winehouse yes sir re.

I have always loved "Anticipation"—it has a great soaring quality about it, and I find it a really mood-lifting song. Gorgeous arrangements too, from Carly's guitar to the subtle drum kicks throughout. I grew up in the '90s/early-2000s so I never associated it with the Heinz ketchup commercials, but my mother remarked to me several times that she—like many others of her generation—were well-acquainted with it because of that.

I love these threads if only because they raise the ire of the queens who hate female artists who are not traditionally attractive. The same people who hate Sarah Jessica Parker will hate Carly. Even though they (the haters) display no talent of their own Also, someone at some point will (wrongly) say that she is a '"one hit wonder" and deserves no further attention. I am a huge Carly fan (not so huge that I need a caftan, though). There has never been "enough love" for Carly (as opposed to Madonna who must have gotten a huge payout to call her latest collection "Finally Enough Love.") Although Carly never had the chart impact that Madonna did, she had a number of big hits over two decades. Several favorites that come to mind quickly: Nobody Does It Better, You're So Vain, Anticipation, That's The Way I Always Hear It Should Be and Jesse. She has had many more. And her albums are as good as the singles and worth listening to.

"???? We're gay men. However, no one here has denied Carly's beauty or physical charms. Obviously, Carly Simon was powerfully attractive to straight dudes."

I do not buy that for a fucking minute. Why are Sarah Jessica's looks so viscously attacked then? Datalounge has never been a safe haven. You all even accused Carly of seducing her son. Do not pretend that this a safe space for anyone.

by Anonymousreply 107October 23, 2022 7:01 AM

On a Carly/Joni note, I just read on the interweb that each wrote songs about being stood up by Jackson Browne, singer/songwriter/domestic abuser. Carly wrote "Anticipation", an era-defining song, famously used for that Heinz commercial. Joni wrote "Car On A Hill" an album track on the seamless masterpiece that is "Court and Spark."

Carly wanted a huge pop hit and tacked that sing-songy "...these are the good ole days" so that she could soothe her hurt with something that sounds like a lullaby.

Joni took a left turn with "Court and Spark." Joni is completely straightforward with her naked despair but sonically, mid-song, she builds to a yelping chorus of avenging Valkyries coming to kill him dead.

Those two are so different as artists.

First, I ain't selling nothing for you to buy.

Second, that disgusting accusation about Carly was not me and I FF-ed that poster so I have not seen it repeated in this thread.

Third, Sarah Jessica Parker is...not attractive. However, I have not 'viciously' attacked her.

Finally -- and take this to heart -- there is no safe space, anywhere, on this planet.

Holy Moly, r55 from the Ben Taylor thread sent me to the I Hate James Taylor thread and this morsel leaves me agog.

[quote] quote]I returned to my apartment on Central Park West. James was there. He'd let himself in. I didn't know quite how I felt to see him. It was a toxic, tawdry mix of nursed resentment and unexpected excitement. I'm a bit ashamed to admit to the latter, even these many years later. He was sitting on the bed when I walked in. He didn't say hello. He just looked up at me and snarled, "Strip, bitch." I did as he asked or, rather, commanded. It had been many angry months since I had seen him aroused. He was enormous, as ever. Even larger than any black man I had met. Was that why it was so impossible to let go? I reproached myself for both asking and knowing it was true. He was surly, and like a rusty snow plow dividing me, and driving deep into me, only making me long for what was lost. Within minutes it was over and he was gone. That was the last time we were ever together like that. I never told his Japanese ballerina girlfriend, the one he bragged about being tighter than a nun. I still regret that wholly unnecessary discretion."

You are repeating total rubbish.

Carly Simon wrote "Anticipation" while waiting for Cat Stevens to show up for a date. And he did not stand her up, unlike pathetic Joni waiting for Jackson Browne who had found better pussy at a bar. That is why Carly's song ends in an ebullient way and sad Joni's does not.

Carly never dated Jackson Browne. Joni did, and when he broke things off she attempted suicide.

by Anonymousreply 117October 24, 2022 5:11 AM

R111 Those are amusing additions to Carly's memoir. All that you left out was "That was when James made me lick his shitter. He did it to humiliate me, but I loved the taste of moist hushpuppies!"

No, No Secrets is not as good as Tapestry.

The first side (when there were such things) of No Secrets is absolutely flawless. The second side is not. It is very uneven. "Embrace Me You Child" is awful. As are many of the other songs on the latter part of that album. But the first half is amazing.

by Anonymousreply 130October 24, 2022 6:24 AM

Was Carly Simon singing about vogueing in 1975, before it was called vogueing, or before anybody knew it was even a thing?

Probably not, but I always found it interesting that what she is describing in "Attitude Dancing" sounds a lot like what the world would come to know as "vogueing" about 15 years later.

I've always thought it would have been cute for Madonna to do an "Attitude Dancing/Vogue" medley live in concert.

Better Not Tell Her that I am your mother. Better not make her jealous of me.

by Anonymousreply 142October 24, 2022 2:53 PM

Carly has said that her mother was extremely critical of her and constantly compared negatively her to her sisters. After Carly won an Oscar for Let The River Run her mother hosted what was meant to be a celebratory dinner. Her mother’s toast was something along the lines “ Who would have believed that of all my children, Carly would be the one to win an Oscar?”

Fags appreciate her so much they marry her.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 144October 24, 2022 3:13 PM

R143 I think Carly had a very complex relationship with her mother. When her mother died, she wrote a lovely song about her "Like A River." That song was the product of the sentimentality that overtook her when her mother died.

Later, a clearer picture of her mother emerged. The withholding woman who, when asked what she thought of a new hit song, would said, "I'd give it a B+." The one who cheated on her husband with a boy barely older than Carly. He lived in the Simon house and Carly's mother would crawl through a passageway between their bedrooms to get fucked by him. She was getting fucked by the young man when her husband had his heart attack and didn't attend to him.

In Carly's memoir, she recalls a woman calling Carly's mother a whore and blaming her for her husband's death. I don't think Carly would have left that in her book if she hadn't come to feel the same way.

R119 - wrong. The second side of No Secrets is fantastic. "It Was So Easy", "Embrace Me You Child" an anthem for every child of an alcoholic in the 70s. The only song that wasn't good ironically was "You're so Vain". As for Tapestry, Carole King sang Smackwater Jack, Way Over Yonder, Where You Lead, and Natural Woman safe safe safe and bland bland bland. The singers that covered those songs did a bang up job compared to her soulless renditions.

by Anonymousreply 174November 6, 2022 9:14 AM

r174 "Why" gained recognition in recent years in the US due to the affiliation with the song's producers Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards.. The single made the top 10 in the UK back when it was released in 1982.

Carly was absent in LA last night for her induction into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame ceremony. "Why" was not a hit-hit, it was a regional hit back when radio stations could play records they liked and their audiences liked. It got spins in urban areas. It also made it to college campuses, my guess is because when played loud it is kinda reggae-ish. Drunk college kids love reggae.

by Anonymousreply 178November 6, 2022 1:30 PM

Why was a hit in the UK, shit 4 brains.

by Anonymousreply 179November 6, 2022 1:48 PM

Here's "Why." It's from the 1982 movie SOUP FOR ONE. As I didn't see the movie, I didn't know the song existed until I got the CLOUDS IN MY COFFEE box set in 1995. I'm of two minds. One, it would have been nice to hear the song when it was first recorded, and two, it was nice to have some surprises on the box set.

I was never a big fan of Why.

It is one of two songs that Carly Simon has said she sang exactly as the producers asked her to, not in the way she wanted to.

The other is "So Many People to Love." She said the producer had produced Janet Jackson and wanted Carly to sing it in that same style, with a very light voice.

My favorite song on "No Secrets" is the title song.

I remember my father hearing it and saying to me, "There is truth in that song. A lot of couples think it is ideal to have no secrets--until one of them obliges."

I always wondered if that was a specific reference or just a general observation.
