Lost In Translation - Does this movie still hold up?

I think it captures loneliness, particularly in a foreign country, really well but I didn’t really like its portrayal of Japanese culture. Felt a bit one note and insulting. Bill Murray basically plays himself, a dick. Scarlet Johansson is quite good, hard to believe she was just 17 when she filmed this movie. There would be tons of complaints about their age gap today. I don’t really see why Sofia Coppola won the Oscar for Bedt Original Screenplay but her direction was very good.

I hated everyone in it, include all the inhabitants of Tokyo.

Scarlett has a Billie Eilish thing going on in this movie.

Voluptuous, pillow-lipped, and precocious.

I thought it was overrated at the time and still think that. Bill Murray was miscast here in my opinion.

Sofia Coppola is really hit or miss in her movies. Loved Virgin Suicides but didn’t like this or Marie Antoinette.

It’s definitely more of a GenX scenario— very young woman bonds meaningfully with older man.

Nowadays the young woman would only look up from her phone long enough to say “ewwwwww!”

I didn't know it at the time but this film was semi-autobiographical. Scarlett's character was based on Sofia and Giovanni Ribisi was supposed to be Spike Jonze whom Sofia was married to at the time. The airhead Anna Faris played is based on Cameron Diaz who worked with Jonze on Being John Malkovich.

I was 23 when it came out and was very moved by it. Just loved it.

But I watched it again maybe five years ago and pretty much hated it.

by Anonymousreply 8October 22, 2022 6:52 AM

Yes, it holds up. I watched it for a second time last week. It was well cast, acted, and very well written.

by Anonymousreply 9October 22, 2022 7:17 AM

I think it holds up. But yes, the age gap would not be well received on twitter/tumblr.

I hated it when it came out.

I saw it on cable and couldn't get past the first 45 minutes or so.

I remember telling someone at the time that it felt like an inept attempt to make an Antonioni styled movie, or something to that effect.

And one-note Bill Murray couldn't have looked more zomboid if he were in a George A. Romero film.

Crummy then, odious now.

by Anonymousreply 12October 22, 2022 12:28 PM

If it were credited as "un de Woody Allen" (which it really is), it would be burned, banned, and cancelled!

by Anonymousreply 13October 22, 2022 12:38 PM

I think it does, but don’t expect everyone to like it. Coppola seems to appeal to women more than men, and like Malick, hits me in the gut every time. I’m a huge fan, so I’m biased.

by Anonymousreply 14October 22, 2022 12:40 PM

Absolutely. It’s one of my favorites

I didn't see what all the fuss was about when it came out, I haven't seen it since. All I remember when it came out was that Sofia Coppola was just gushing about Bill Murray in all of her promotion interviews and how thrilled she was that he agreed to be in the movie.

by Anonymousreply 16October 22, 2022 9:09 PM

I remember that too R16. She called Bill her muse and was relentless in getting him to do it. I think she was even willing to abandon the project if he didn't sign on.

by Anonymousreply 17October 22, 2022 10:31 PM

I kept hoping for a Virgin Suicides type ending.

by Anonymousreply 18October 23, 2022 12:03 AM

I liked it when I first saw it upon its original release. Then, saw it again in 2015, of all places on a flight from Tokyo back to North America and it deeply resonated with me since, in the intervening years, I had a platonic, yet extremely intense relationship with someone that paralleled the one depicted in the movie.
