Like, now I find out I have syphilis???
I am 62 years old and diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia. I had more tests done because the symptoms are becoming more noticeable. Extensive blood work was done, moreso than has ever been done before. I find out I am HIV negative, which I predicted, and lo and behold, I have syphilis.
I haven't had a sexual partner in 20 years, only ten or so more in the 20 years before that. The doctor told me the virus gives you an immediate sore and a rash. I never noticed that back then. Then it goes dormant in your body and can reappear at any point in the rest of your life.
Here's the kicker. It can interrupt brain and nerve function, hallmarks of frontotemporal dementia. I may have been misdiagnosed all these years, with no hint I should have been going to an infection specialist all along. I wonder why my primary doctors never did these tests on me.
I am shocked! I feel guilty and dirty. How am I going to tell my family this?
Have you experienced this?

Why do you have to tell your family? I mean, yeah you'll need to tell them you have dementia, but you absolutely don't have to tell them it's because of untreated syphilis.
Best of luck to you. I hope you can get mitigating treatment.

No, but is the damage reversible if the infection is treated? Good luck with your treatment. You don't need to tell your family.

If you feel like you need to tell your family can't you tell them it's from a head injury? Or that your physicians don't know what caused it?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 22, 2022 1:22 AM
|
Don't worry about telling your family. Especially if the damage is irreversible. Continue your treatment plan with your doctor and concentrate on getting the care you need now. When you start thinking about power of attorney, that person might be the person to inform of your medical condition, only because it helps them make the right decision based on your circumstances and wishes. But it's not something anyone else needs to be aware of. It doesn't change anything.

I think you would not have to tell your family the reasons behind your illness if you don't want to. Then again is there any Shane in having syphilis? I don't think so but maybe others do. Get it treated and get on with life.

Many a vet in WW2 had the same story. Hudson River State Hospital in Poughkeepsie NY had a special building for those poor old demented guys. If you were on antibiotic it treated the acute stage, the soreness & rash. 2nd stage very symptom free, 3rd stage what you are now experiencing. Syphilis is sneaky. You have to keep getting tested & retreated if & when it comes back.

Reminds me of a story. I live in Australia. My best friend is a phlebotomist. A lady had been treated for chlamydia and was having a further test to see if she was clear of it. Koala bears are prone to chlamydia. Now, this lady my friend was treating was rather proper and conservative, about 55. She told my friend that she must have gotten the chlamydia from a koala she petted! We still laugh about it, those koala bears dropping from trees to rape unsuspecting prudes.

A cluster of syphilis cases in Chicago with disturbing symptoms. It’s called NOO syphilis
Neurosyphilis, vision issues, headaches, hearing loss, dizziness, personality changes, altered mental state
2/3 of the pts dd not have typical early syphilis symptoms like an initial lesion or rash
1/3 of the pts were HIV+

Apparently in the old days (75-100 years ago) this could kill someone quickly - I had several people in my family tree basically go into dementia and then die due to untreated syph.

Syphilis could and does lead to neurosyphilis or brain issues. That we always saw as an old persons issue. Not an22 year olds issue.
Deaths yes but I have never heard of syphilis killing anyone “quickly”. Not 100 years ago not 200.
But early neurosyphilis , the eye syphilis, like those that are being found in Chicago now these can happen in a few months maybe weeks.
Quickly or not it’s still a very serious and deadly disease

I will say that if you told anyone working in a syphilis clinic in 1970 that a large number of pts under the age of 30 would be developing neurosyphilis, having significant vision loss from syphilis of the eye, having personality changes, after a few months or weeks of being infected they would have thought you an absolute loon.
No one would have believed that

The first thing I thought of was HIV but only 1/3 in this Chicago cluster were HIV pos.
The same sort of strangeness happened in Michigan (ok not far from Chicago) where one infected man gave syphilis of the eye to as I remember to 5 different woman. And none of those woman had other underlying conditions and none had hiv.
The man was not a good interview and the woman all named him when they developed eye related problem's and were found with syphilis. , He was not cooperative as far as an interview.
There could be any number of cases related to this man we will not know about.

I am sorry for the news. With all due respect, OP, it doesn't seem that you were properly investigating your own health as a gay man. An awful lot of gay men have full blood workup at least once a year. And nowadays, anyone on Prep has it more often. It even sounds like you never had an HIV test until now, or hadn't had one in decades? I mean -what the fuck. I agree your doctor should have been proposing a full panel of blood work every year - does your doctor know you are gay?
I dunno.

1 shot 2 shots 3 shots and you are done?
You all ahould do a search “ CDC recommendations for treatment of neurosyphilis “ or “ UK recommendations for treatment of neurosyphilis “ you can also see it for China and Europe. It’s all slightly different.
Different kinds of penicillin and some IV and some IM what they all have in common is 10-14 days or so of treatment throughout the day. Neurosyphilis involvement means different treatment recommendations. And the recommendation is not 1 or 2 or 3 shots.
It’s your health you should all do your own search and not take anyone’s word.
I don’t know how doctors are treating it but I know what the official recommendations are.

It’s odd how these clusters seem to pop up then seem to disappear,
this current chicago cluster of neurosyphilis the article above , the one recently in Michigan with the neuro eye syphilis, the deadly local meningitis outbreaks that pop up now and then, including a few years ago in Chicago, another in Canada, strike down a few men , kill a few before they get to the hospital, then seem to just go away.
