Educated whites do tend to "white=splain" a lot and when they're not "white-splaining" they're lecturing everybody about everything. People just want some money in their pocket, be able to feed their families, and enjoy a little bit of life, they don't want constant lectures about how everything is horrible and they're the reason for it.
Educated whites need to learn how to code switch. When you're not at a Harvard Alumni Reception, you have to be able to talk to regular people in a language they understand and then maybe they won't be so annoyed with you.
And this is not to say that some blue collar people aren't awful people who make awful choices based on awful beliefs, but if you want people on your side, sometimes you have to go where they are. Example 2008 Hillary Clinton. That Hillary would have won in 2016.

For a century the Democratic party was the party of plumbers and professors of sociology. But for whatever reason the Party decided 15 years ago that the whole worldview of people like professors of sociology needed to be adopted wholesale. And now in the last 5 years it has been all but declared that if you don't agree 100% with that worldview, you were a bigot who shouldn't be in the Party anyway. Despite praising unions, the Party abandoned class for identity.
What's crazy about this is that people who work as professors and in similar professions were never going to leave the Democratic party. The GOP didn't and doesn't want them. They had nowhere else to go. But instead of telling them to back off so that we can win general elections, we decided to give them complete control and give into every one of their increasingly schismatic demands.

No...it's the reality that even smarter Dems/Liberals are smart enough to realize that Identity Politics and the Far Left's nutty obsession with transgender bullshit is undermining the ability for Dems/Libs to get anything done that needs to be done.
And, I'm 100% for actual trans folks but that's a tiny percentage of the popuation. It's the twits who've jumped on the "non binary" bandwagon because it's trendy who are causing all the problems. Obsessing over pronouns and trans agenda shit is just fuel for the Right and causes the middle of the road types to vote Republican.

Ibsen’s “Enemy of the People” is forever relevant in the US. A doctor discovers that the water in city’s celebrated spas being contaminated. He thinks his discovery will make him a hero. See the play’s title to figure out what happens,
Similarly, Leo Strauss warned philosophers that they needed to keep their agenda secret from the public to avoid being seen as elitist. People simply won’t accept the truth if it’s not what they want to hear.
Democrats need to take note.

[quote] Most Whites, particularly socio-political liberals, now endorse racial equality. Archival and experimental research reveals a subtle but reliable ironic consequence: White liberals self-present less competence to minorities than to other Whites—that is, they patronize minorities stereotyped as lower status and less competent.
[quote] In an initial archival demonstration of the competence downshift, Study 1 examined the content of White Republican and Democratic presidential candidates’ campaign speeches. Although Republican candidates did not significantly shift language based on audience racial composition, Democratic candidates used less competence-related language to minority audiences than to White audiences.
[quote] Across five experiments (total N = 2,157), White participants responded to a Black or White hypothetical (Studies 2, 3, 4, S1) or ostensibly real (Study 5) interaction partner.
[quote] Three indicators of self-presentation converged: sophistication of vocabulary selected for an assignment, competence-related traits selected for an introduction, and competence-related content of brief, open-ended introductions.
[quote] Conservatism indicators included: self-reported political affiliation (liberal-conservative), Right-Wing Authoritarianism (values-based conservatism) and Social Dominance Orientation (hierarchy-based conservatism). Internal meta-analyses revealed that liberals—but not conservatives—presented less competence to Black interaction partners than to White ones.
[quote] The simple effect was small but significant across studies, and most reliable for the self-reported measure of conservatism. This possibly unintentional but ultimately patronizing competence-downshift suggests that well-intentioned liberal Whites may draw on low-status/competence stereotypes to affiliate with minorities.

You know, my family lived in Michigan and they worked in auto plants and made cars. They were members of the UAW back when that meant something, before Reagan. Many people in my family, my father, uncles a couple of aunts, etc. didn't go to college. But they understood the issues. They understood trade and tariffs, and oil and gas, energy, etc. The union educated their members about the issues that affected them. The average union worker was more literate about politics than a lot of college educated people. You didn't have to drag them to the polls either. they worked the polls, they volunteered, they voted. This was certainly a fact in the 50's 60's and 70's. The Republicans were always trying to undermine and break the unions. Always. Ging back to the early 30's or even before that. Blood was shed to establish labor unions. IMO, the erosion of organized labor is a critical factor in why the so called "blue color" worker is not well informed. It is deliberate. The Republicans have weaponized low information voters, and created a false narrative of "us vs them" to keep us divided. Ironic. Because labor unions created the middle class. And after WW II Veterans coming home from war, got VA loans to by houses and subsidies for college. And Auto workers, had the ability to send their kids to college, and to retire with a pension. And our families had healthcare benefits. It is divisive bullshit that the Republicans have peddled as gospel to set up an adversarial relationship between formally educated and those who aren't. Ironically, as well, the Republicans are attacking our education system and they are obstructing any attempts to get a decent minimum wage or universal healthcare. Fuck them and their divisive hostile bullshit.

r38 We need to get rid of the electoral college, so the cities of coastal elites can determine the rightaway for the entire nation, which at best they don't understand or at worst, despise....
the concept of the electoral college is essentially a good one... the problem, of course, is that the system has been gamed and largely due to dominating parties as well as the innate corruption within. Just as with any finance reforms from campaigns to insider trading, we can't expect them to actually police themselves or their organized bodies. . . yet the public has little recourse in countering this kind of corruption, especially when it comes from the highest levels of govt.

I just find when most of the tranny obsessed people post here about the evil trans, they include gays and lesbians as well. Of course, their definition of "lesbian" is more variable. It's often the kind which is a political statement, sort of a feminist version of mgtow and they tend to be rather lesbiophobic to actual lesbians to those women that are physically attracted to other women, the way they socialize - lesbian culture if you will, even down to how they have sex.
so, we go to the root of their history, their rhetoric, which trans has always meant gay. . . even while they try to recruit us, claim to be in solidarity. . . like those with the organization Get The L Out and the homophobic rhetoric in their writings even while they co-opt the identity of lesbian, actively work to undermine lesbian rights and liberties, force themselves into lesbian spaces and take the public spotlight as being the majority representation of lesbians. . . not unlike their complaints against trans.

They’re talking about two different things when it comes to “educated whites.” There’s the educated whites who went to college for a reasonable degree and learned important critical thinking skills and can look at things pragmatically and not get sucked into any doctrine.
Then there’s the “educated whites” they’re talking about, which means they completed at least one general education requirement where a professor who was promoted above their ability and still speaks with fourth grade language skills screaming at them about how racism is the worst thing in the world while telling them that they are impure and inherently evil due to their skin color and being too ignorant and trashy to see the blatant hypocrisy in the words.
The con is up. Do they want the educated whites who will keep the country running in a less showy but progressive manner? Or do we want the educated whites who will burn it on all down due to pettiness and resentment?
And if so, who is gonna foot the bill?

Every study ever done on how people vote has shown that people vote with their guts, not their brains.
Including educated whites, busily striving to maintain good gut health by pouring turmeric and bone broth down their throats every day.
That must be it! That is why the guts of the educated white voters' tell them the right way to vote!

[quote]“Our party is becoming a party that’s run by overeducated White folks, and we’re losing the messaging that made me join the Democrats in 1990 as a [union] rubber worker.”
This guy is about 60 years behind, I'm afraid. The Republicans slowly rolled out the Southern Strategy in the 1960s, and went all-in on it in 1968, with this exact kind of talk. EXACT. "Democrats are elitist and overeducated and don't have the common man's concerns at heart, like we do," Republicans told Southerners who were mad because Democrats thought blacks deserved human rights.
I'm tired of the media telling Democrats and liberals that they have to make a show of caring the most about white straight Christian people first and everyone else second, otherwise they're "overeducated elites" who deserve to lose.
I'm tired of the trolls like r92 telling me that all Democrats do is force trannies down the throats of innocent widdle kids, and let the Negro steal everything without any consequences.
Vote Republican then, asshole. That goes for the guy quoted in the OP and r92 and everyone in between who acts like that. Just vote Republican and shut the fuck up about it. Stop acting like it's your job to convince everyone on DL to do the same.

Why can't white working class people be so compliant, er reasonable?

When my grandparents grew up during the depression, College was an impossible dream. Getting an education was getting a high school diploma. And I had great aunts and uncles who never went to high school or never made it past 9-10th grade. But they were smart people. They read books and Grandma said there were three newspapers and they had delivery of all three every day. There were a lot of immigrants coming in speaking foreign languages. The first TV in the family was at Great Grandma's house and my grandmother remembers watching I love Lucy and other stuff as a kid. The divisions between working class Americans and wealthy people wasn't based on intelligence. It was based on wealth.

People can care about more than one thing at a time. They can take the platform, actions, history and goals of each candidate and/or party and look at them as a whole.
Unfortunately trolls, the media, and a lot of politicians want you to think only in terms of a few separate, disparate issues, and to get emotional about them, then vote on those one or two issues that bother you.
I guess if you don't do that and instead look at the bigger picture, you're an "overeducated elite," right?

Alarms bells should have went off when democrats started losing white tge working class in the northeast. White working class as whole went republican after the Civil rights 60s but not in New york, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and all of new England. Some of these people may have echoed the words nigger, kite-- in ways that would make Robert E Lee jealous but they still were reliably Democrat. Staten Island is like 70% republican now. It's a cultural problem.

The more time I spend in rural areas and small towns, the more it becomes apparent that the GOP's greatest strength (in its current iteration) is a large population of people subjected to lead exposure from birth. It lowers childhood iq, impairs executive functioning skills and impulse control through adulthood, contributes to a sense of permanent paranoia, and gets worse with age as bone tissue breaks down and stored lead is released into the blood again.
There are large areas of the country (and the world) where it affects both the lower and middle classes. A permanent news cycle emphasizing fear and anger is like an accelerant to that.
Two of the most radical steps liberals could take long-term is subsidizing lead abatement and oversight, in low-income areas and cities, and funding training and service programs for rural mental health specialists.
Unfortunately, both of those are enormously expensive undertakings.
by Anonymous | reply 110 | February 14, 2023 12:14 PM |
I used to believe the "coastal elites need to change their rhetoric about poor whites" angle, too. But it's a straw man. The real solution is addressing the deeper problems and factors that attract people to radicalization (which is what the GOP is at this point) in the first place.

R114- By all means, I invite you to spend two years doing volunteer mental health outreach in rural areas, and then tell me what your conclusions are at the end. I'm from the area that I work in, both as a personal trainer and as a mental health volunteer. It is in my own interest to accurately assess what is going on with the local population, physically and mentally.

R113, The term was "over-educated." Wording matters. This term refers clearly to people with higher degrees, implying that such learning is both elite and effete and puts the person on a plane from which to condescend (looking at r112 and r113) to "Middle America" (Irony Alert: The implication that "Middle America" is not as educated is the real condescension).
Moreover, r113, "overly-educated" people know very well their areas of ignorance. It is the poorly educated who are incapable of realizing what they do not know.
The REALITY is that many of us (Masters +) are strong Democrats/Liberals. This has been true since at least the days of Adlai "Egghead" Stevenson and JFK.
I'm not convinced it's level of education and where, or relative wealth, or even doing the good work of r115 that makes or breaks a political candidate.
I think it's personality and a sincere conveyance of genuine caring about others. That empathy transcends degrees and Party. In my lifetime there have been few politicians that had this quality.
And the one who surpassed the rest was Bobby Kennedy.

That Pew poll is a mess--poorly written. I ended up as a committed conservative, which is hilarious. I'm an overeducated coastal elite with the voting record to prove it. I like most of what Biden has done and plan to continue voting for Democrats.
From what I can figure out, it was my mild negative on trans (I don't think anyone who went through a male adolescence belongs in women's sports, don't think minors should medical transition and don't think pre-op MTFs belong in women's prisons, but I don't have an issue with other things) and thinking the U.S. should have a presence overseas, which is way in more in line with Biden's policies than Trump's . . . how does not being an isolationist make me a conservative?
Meanwhile, no questions on women's rights, treatment of immigrants, the environment or global warming or the death penalty--all things that put me on the left. I did say I thought prison sentences were too long, so how am I committed conservative with that attitude?

These illiterate trash are just sick of "uppity" educated people making them feel as stupid as they are.
It's the same reason Donald Trump hates Elizabeth Warren so much. She reminds him of all the teachers and librarians who told him he was a fuckin' moron over the years.
Educated whites are the librarians who shushed you. We're the doctors who told you your heart attack came from smoking and red meat. We're the lawyer who wouldn't take your case when you got run over by your own jet-ski. We're the bureaucrat who told you you couldn't build a homemade jacuzzi on your roof without a permit. We're the astronauts who got to go into space while you can't even afford a Greyhound ticket. We're the ones who own the toilets you clean, the Amazon packages you lug, and the Acuras you polish with a diaper. We are walking reminders of all the things you hate about yourselves, so it's natural for you to hate our snooty guts.

These people, I didn't think, were racist or homophobic. But in the past two years or so two things have caused them to become " fed up with this stuff." Reparations is one such issue. They say they are sick of being accused of being racist. They are sick of it!!! Transgender people demanding we ignore biology and science and allow men to use women's restrooms and join women's sport teams.
