It's not as though they were taken in the first flush of youth. It's sad that they died in the same week, but after age 75, only a naive person would continue to assume that all the people around were immortal. (That clock's a tickin' for all of us) These sisters were in their 80s. Carly's the baby at 79.
Since the fact that Carly had some significant black ancestry (10%) via her Cuban grandmother came out in "Finding your roots - with Henry Gates Jr", I would love to have been a fly on the wall during that post-show conversation with her sisters. I'm sure that there are tons of people in the US like the Simon sisters who have black ancestry they're unaware of. It only makes sense that people who could pass for white in the past would do so given half an opportunity, if only to make the lives of their children easier.

[quote] Since the fact that Carly had some significant black ancestry (10%) via her Cuban grandmother came out in "Finding your roots - with Henry Gates Jr", I would love to have been a fly on the wall during that post-show conversation with her sisters.
Is 10% "significant"?! I wouldn't say so. Cuz yeah, there are lots of "white" folks walking around with about that much. It's approximately having one GREAT grandparent who is mixed race. I guess it might be significant if it were 1843 in Mississippi.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | October 22, 2022 5:47 AM |
Carly's mouth area has always been attributed to her maternal Black ancestry. Joanna also had a full mouth and luscious lips. Come to think of it, Joanna looked like a prettier version of Carol Channing - another White performer who was believed to be part Black.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | October 22, 2022 5:51 AM |
I don't think she was known to have maternal Black ancestry until recently. I have heard comparisons to Mick Jagger based on the size and shape of their mouths.
Culturally, you don't get much whiter than Carly Simon. The manner in which she was raised, her lifestyle, the sound and content of the music she created. I don't think too much can be made of that little bit of basically unacknowledged non-white ancestry.

I'm in my forties and I've heard rumblings about Carly's heritage for decades. Maybe it was officially confirmed on Finding Your Roots, but it's been talked about long before then (and in the black community as well). Of course, it was probably kept hush hush by Carly's mother back then for obvious reasons.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | October 22, 2022 6:23 AM |
R52, yeah, doesn’t get much whiter than being raised in the household of Simon of Simon & Schuster…

by Anonymous | reply 57 | October 22, 2022 7:01 AM |
You get approximately 50% of your genes from each parent, and approximately 25% from each grandparent, so 10% is essentially the contribution from one great-grandparent. Of course it depends on the age when people have children, but my mom knows her great grandchildren and they know her - they'd notice if she were black, so it would be significant to them. (She's 100 yo, BTW). But more likely, given the social stratification in Cuba at the time, Carly's grandmother was probably the product of two mixed-race parents with varying amounts of black and white ancestry. As some have mentioned above, most of what we turn out to be is determined by our upbringing - the amount of money and education we receive, and the personalities of our parents, not by the genes that show which continent our ancestors came from. I think Carly did know that her grandmother was Cuban, and I think she knew her at least as a young child. But she is more likely to remember her grandmother's personality, her voice and her accent, whatever treats she handed out to her grandchildren, than anything cultural related to her black ancestry in Cuba. I don't think most educated white people would freak out if they discovered that they had some black ancestry, unless they were raised as out-and-out bigots - but many would be quite surprised, especially if it had not been discussed within the family.

That is awful. Carly has always struck me as nuttier than a fruitcake and emotionally fragile—I cannot imagine how she's taking this.
Also, I've never felt that Carly's voice was thin. Sure, she was never a belter, but she had a well-rounded, lovely contralto. A great singer and a talented musician.

I also know that Carly agreed to be a source for the book about her, Carole King, and Joni Mitchell if the author never revealed her real age. For example, the book is very vague about things that would tip you off. Carly graduated from high school, but we are never told when.

I seem to remeber reading about her whining how she's not making the kind of money she used to (70s and 80s), but I guess this is understood.
Didn't she sell her house a few years ago? Whether she has more houses, I don't know. I guarantee she's not homeless.

This happened to my mother in 1990. She’s one of 5 siblings - 2 men and 3 women. One of her sisters died kind of suddenly. My mom and I were with her when she died as her children didn’t get there on time. She was 61. My mom contacted her other siblings, but no one could reach her one brother. Her other sister and her husband (my aunt and uncle) drove to his home where he lived alone. This was a distance away. No one answered the door. They went around to the back of the house and could see through the windows that he was sitting in an armchair in his underwear. He’d been reading the newspaper and had a heart attack. He was 60. I can still remember my mother getting off the phone with her sister and screaming, “Keith’s dead, too!”
My mom (and dad) is the only one left on her side of the family. All of her siblings and spouses have died.

Uh, yeah, having a great grandparent of any culture/race would be a relatively significant contribution to one's DNA.
I'm not trying to address America's issues with race or defining who is or is not "white." (R58 addresses that better than I could.) But as a somewhat budding genealogist....generally speaking, a great grandparent's contribution is pretty significant.
I believe I read an article that the most common occurrence with white people in America who find any sort of DNA from indigenous people or any brown/black ancestors is that they see somewhere under 2 percent in their results, which generally means it was well over 5 generations ago. We were told so many times when I was young that we had Native American ancestors but thus far we have *zero* DNA matches on that, and a small amount (<1 percent) of Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry.

Carly tells the story about how she put her foot in her mouth with her great friend Jackie O. They used to go to matinee movies, with Carly making the arrangements. When Oliver Stone’s (egregious) JFK was showing, Carly made a big point about scouting locations that weren’t featuring the movie or having posters advertising it. She successfully found a JFK-free venue, but when they settled in the theater for their agreed-upon movie, she unthinkingly asked Jackie if she had seen JFK!

Carly was considered the "gawky, stutterer" in the family, the 'leftover sister." Both of her sisters outshined her. The writer Sloan Wilson, who was a frequent visitor at her parents home said in a memor that c all the Simon women extremely attractive, except Carly, which "crushed her." That ironic, since Carly Simon was always promoted as sex symbol, singing songs about all the lovers she had and posing for album covers in lingerie.

Carly Simon was okay I've liked several of her songs over the decades, I'm old now. Carly's singing and songwriting is nothing next to Joni Mitchell's or even Carole King's. I've been buying Joni Mitchell's work in every new musical recording platform since I had the original vinyl, same thing for Carole King but only with Tapestry. I've also bought James Taylor's music every time there was a new platform.
Carly's okay but she's not the equal of Joni, Carole and her former husband, James.
Why does James hate Carly so much, anyway? I heard some story about how he wouldn't even allow Carly into his house to use the bathroom at one of their kid's weddings (or something like that).

Carly wrote far better music than Joni and far better lyrics than Carole or James.
Joni Mitchell's lyrics are genius, but most of Joni Mitchell's music is dull and most of Carole King's lyrics are childish and completely unsophisticated.

Yes, Carly has told that story to the press. That should give you an indication as to why James Taylor has little to do with Carly. Why give someone the time of day when they'll spin it into a story for their public?

I saw Joni Mitchell in concert. I think she is a genius.
But I was bored by how every song sounded the same. And so was the rest of the audience, who told her to get off the stage so Bob Dylan could start. She did not respond well. (I don't blame her, as the audience was very rude.)
I left when Bob Dylan came on because I can't stand his voice.
I love Joni but was disappointed at how dull she was. I realized that she does not have a knack for a melody.

I cosign R117. I really like Joni's music. Her lyrics and chord structure are more intricate and complex. But as others have stated, the music isn't as accessible as Carly's.
I respect Carole King's accomplishments. Since her teens, she's been writing songs that have become part of the Great American Songbook. Her album Tapestry is one of the best-selling albums of all time. But except for a song or two, I find her music dull as dishwater.
Carly's discography is the one that stirs my soul the most. MARY!!! Of the three of them, I think she is best at fusing haunting melodies with thoughtful lyrics. I realize it all comes down to personal taste though.

One of my favorites of her songs....Let The River Run. When I hear it, I sing to it loud...and have to hear it again. It's an uplifting song....great in the opening of Working Girl, showing Manhattan.

Carly was looking pretty frail a while back. I hope she doesn’t make this a trifecta anytime soon.
I’ve always thought how awkward it must have been when James and Carly were both living on Martha’s Vineyard after their divorce, given how James apparently hates her. It’s a small island so they’d be bound to run into each other and their different circles of friends. I think Carly lives there full time. James lives in Western Mass, I think.

For a long time I hated James Taylor and felt he was a real asshole.
But the more I read about Carly the more I'm not so sure he was the asshole in that scenario.
They seemed to go well together when James was an addict, since their neurotic selves needed each other. But I think as much as Carly talks about James in her book, she doesn't spell out what she was doing (fucking other men as if it was an open relationship) and I think between the fucking around and Carly's bottomless well of need, James probably just "had it" at some point and walked away. And probably recognized staying away was key to his sobriety.
I still think he's a huge cunt (he mistreated Joni) but I'm not so sure it's black and white with James and Carly.

I thought Carly's memoir was extremely well written. That did not surprise me as Carly has a way with words.
What did surprise me is that Carly showed no insight into how being molested as a child (by an older boy having her suck his cock as a child) may have affected her as an adult, causing her to use sex as currency with almost every man she encountered in the music industry.
It seemed that that vital insight was totally lost on her.

Carly issued a very thoughtful and well-written statement about her sisters' deaths.
It made me realize that while their joint deaths were a surprise to us, they were something that she had had time to prepare for.
It also comforted me to know that Carly was coping with this horrible loss in a dignified and appropriate manner. I was worried that she would be at a total loss.

The parallels between Carly and Dusty Springfield's career just struck me.
Both had some success early on in a more folkish vein in a band with their sibling. For Dusty it was The Springfields with brother Tom, for Carly it was the Simon Sisters with sister Lucy.
Both had that sort of inoffensive folk sound (hell, the Simon Sisters had an album of children's music).
Carly and Dusty would both become more notable as solo artists - Dusty in the 60s, Carly in the 70s.

You do realize that some people will lose it if they confront certain things....? It can actually be easier to NOT think of yourself as a victim. And before you start, that does not mean that molestation is no big deal. It means, don't frame other people's personal shit as YOU wish.

Aside from her luxurious home on the Vineyard, Simon was a financial investor in a number of businesses out there since the 80s. One was a nightclub in Edgartown - Hot Tin Roof - while the other was a gift shop called "Midnight Farm" in Vineyard Haven. Both are gone, but by all accounts she did very well financially with them. I have heard she also had some financial interests in restaurants, and hotels in Edgartown.

[quote]I think she just doesn't want to admit that the guy she was fucking was gay.
I don't think Carly Simon knew John Travolta was gay. (Not so hard to believe as she didn't even know her second husband was gay until he told her in therapy after many years of marriage.)
Years ago, when AOL was still the thing, there was a very active Carly Simon message board. What made it fun was someone would regularly post as "MrsRhale." After a while, the regulars realized it was Carly herself.
I remember there was some discussion about Travolta's sexuality and Carly posted: "On John Travolta, two words: not gay."
I remember at the time thinking, "Sure, girl." But I realized that she really may not have known and assumed that because they fucked he couldn't possibly be gay.
I think she avoided talking about him in her book because it was very embarrassing to James Taylor. And she was really trying to pull her punches with him, lest she make things even worse for her and the kids with him.

I don't know about Travolta supporting Carly during young Ben's kidney crisis, but James was AWOL.
IIRC, Ben had suffered from a series of high fevers and other symptoms for years, and the doctors weren't able to diagnose the kidney disorder until it became critical.
James was an generally absentee father through all of these medical crisis, and when Ben was finally critically ill and hospitalized James was with his Japanese girlfriend Evelyn and couldn't be reached.
When James was finally notified about his son, he came to the hospital but refused to go up to Ben's room - for reasons which aren't known to me...

I really get it. My sister is my best friend and confidante, the closest person to me in this world that there’ll ever be—more like a twin than a younger sister. It’s been that way since we were kids. I know if something so awful should happen (or when, I guess, since age comes for us all of illness/accident doesn’t), I’d find it very hard to go on without her for long, maybe even impossible.
