There is a part of the book that describes Lafferty at that kind of retreat headed by John Bryant, but in terms of "free love", the book makes it sound like Lafferty was only having sex with multiple other women - no same-sex kiss with Bryant. I'm sure this is just some projection on the part of Dustin Lance Black.
The actor who plays Bryant is Cody Ray Thompson, who watchers of THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY may recall as the soldier Dave who Klaus fell in love with in Season 1.
