California governor blocks parole for Manson family member Patricia Krenwinkel
California Gov. Gavin Newsom blocked the parole of Patricia Krenwinkel, a former Charles Manson follower and convicted murderer in a notorious 1969 killing spree, saying “she currently poses an unreasonable risk of danger to public safety"...WHICH IS BULLSHIT!
If Newsom doesn't want to grant her parole (obviously for political reasons), then just say so. But at 74 years of age, Krenwinkel is not a danger to society.
Release her...and Leslie Van Houten too.

Krenwinkel has served approximately 53 years in prison, according to the governor’s office.

Before we shed too many tears for poor Patricia....
Krenwinkel was a participant in the murders on August 9, 1969, at 10050 Cielo Drive, home of actress Sharon Tate and her husband, director Roman Polanski. After stabbing Abigail Folger, Krenwinkel went back inside and summoned Tex Watson, who also stabbed Folger. During her trial, Krenwinkel said, "𝑰 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒃𝒃𝒆𝒅 𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑰 𝒌𝒆𝒑𝒕 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒃𝒃𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒉𝒆𝒓." 𝑾𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒂𝒔𝒌𝒆𝒅 𝒉𝒐𝒘 𝒊𝒕 𝒇𝒆𝒍𝒕, 𝑲𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒌𝒆𝒍 𝒓𝒆𝒑𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒅: "𝑵𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈, 𝑰 𝒎𝒆𝒂𝒏, 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒃𝒆? 𝑰𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒋𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒊𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒓𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕."
Krenwinkel participated willingly in more murders the following night. She recounted during her December 29, 2016 parole hearing the events of the night of August 10, 1969. Along with Manson, Watson, Atkins, Clem Grogan, Leslie Van Houten, and Linda Kasabian, she went to the home of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca where she, Watson, and Van Houten murdered the couple.
When later questioned, she claimed the only thing going through her mind at the time was that "Now he won't be sending any of his children off to war." Before hitchhiking back to Spahn Ranch, the trio stayed a while in the LaBianca home — eating food, showering, and playing with the LaBiancas' two dogs.

We have innumerable threads on DL about criminals who committed lesser crimes, like the recent protesters, who DLers very seriously say deserve the death penalty.
That's why I don't have any patience for these threads about how the Manson cult members should be let out of prison now. I don't see any of you on those other threads, telling people off for saying that someone who spilled milk in a protest should be literally executed for their crime. But you're over here, sobbing your hearts out for this murderer, for some reason.

R34, Americans are often of the opinion that people who do really terrible things should be thrown in a hole and never allowed to crawl out again. I have to admit that I often feel that way despite my political leanings.
But in many parts of the world, no matter how bad the thing you’ve done is, it’s considered to be fundamentally inhumane to give someone a life sentence. (And forget about capital punishment, that’s considered completely BARBARIC.)
Consider if you would the case of Anders Breivik, the rightwing Norwegian mass murderer. Despite the ghastly nature of his crime, he was only sentenced to 21 years in prison, and even then the law provided for a hearing to determine if he could be paroled after ten years! Now, I’ve read several times that the Norwegians will never let him out, and apparently they have some discretion to keep him imprisoned after the 21 year sentence is up (or do they? Rather confusing) but the idea that he wasn’t just thrown into a dungeon and the key thrown away is just unimaginable to me as an American.

[qoute] Is she a psychopath or did she fall into a cult mentality with the help of drugs or ?
She was obviously very sick minded before she met Charlie, as were all of the Manson family who killed for him. Manson asked quite a few of his followers to kill for him. Some did; some didn't. In ""Helter Skelter" Vincent Bugliosi said that Tex Watson, Patricia Krenwinkle, Susan Atkins and Leslie Van Houten "had a hostility and rage in them that pre-=existed Charles Manson." He went on: "there had to be something special about these people that caused them to kill. Some inner flaw. Apart from Charlie."

Some crimes are so offensive to the community that they will never be paroled, nor should they be paroled. The Manson murders are a situation like that. Charlie himself didn't kill Sharon Tate or any of the victims during that time. He may have killed some guy named Shorty in the desert but I don't know. The idea of Charles Manson being paroled would have sent the community insane. He was where he belonged and he died where he belonged.
These old ladies who keep trying to get out are dreaming. They'll never, ever be released. Deal with reality, Manson girls.

Enough. Release them. They are not a threat to society. I like Newsom, but he gave a bullshit excuse about being a danger. This was a political excuse on his part. The parole board and psychiatrists determined otherwise saying they both have shown sufficient remorse; they are not the same people as they were more than 50 years ago, and they are not a harm to society. Release them.

I'm not scared of an old lady. I just think this particular old lady should serve out the life sentence she was lucky to receive when her execution was invalidated by the Supreme Court in 1972. If not for that, she would have been gassed long ago and we wouldn't be having this conversation 50 years later. She can leave prison the same way her victims left their homes - in a body bag.

Being old doesn't lessen the viciousness of her crime - no matter how long ago it was.
Frankly, she should never have been eligible for parole in the first place. It should always have been life without the possibility of parole.
Of course, she's going to SAY that she's remorseful after spending 50 years in prison. However, no one can ever know whether she regrets her crime or simply regrets being caught, convicted, and incarcerated for 50 years.
Remember, the first couple times any of them came up for parole, there was not an ounce of contrition for what they had done.
Why would anyone pity her? Why would anyone think she's "suffered" enough? No, she has not suffered at all in comparison to the pain, terror, and suffering of her victims. The reality is that whatever she's had to deal with in prison is nothing compared to what her victims suffered.

I don't think Charlie favored PK for her beauty and sensuality. But she was a favorite of his because she was a very loyal and devoted henchwoman to him. Krenwinkel wouldn't speak out against Charlie until 1994, whereas Atkins and LVH had already dropped him by the late 1970s!

I seriously doubt that looks had anything to do with why Manson recruited her.
[quote]Patricia Krenwinkel was born on December 3, 1947 in Los Angeles, California, to an insurance-salesman father and a homemaker mother. She attended University High School and then Westchester High School, both in the Los Angeles area. Patricia was often bullied at school by other students, suffered from low self-esteem, and was frequently teased for being overweight and for an excessive growth of body hair caused by an endocrine condition.
[quote]After her parents divorced, seventeen-year-old Krenwinkel remained in Los Angeles with her father until she graduated from Westchester High School. For a time she taught Catechism (Roman Catholic religious instruction) and considered becoming a nun. She decided to attend the Jesuit college Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama. Within one semester, however, she dropped out and moved back to California. Moving into her half-sister's apartment in Manhattan Beach, she found an office job as a processing clerk.
[quote]She met Charles Manson in Manhattan Beach in 1967, along with Lynette Fromme and Mary Brunner. In later interviews, Krenwinkel stated that she had sex with Manson the first night they met, and that he was the first person who told her she was beautiful. Mesmerized by Manson's charisma and starved for attention, she decided to go to San Francisco with him and the other two girls, leaving behind her apartment, car, and last paycheck.
Sounds more like, if she had been born in the 21st century, she'd still be in jail, but this time, for a mass shooting at some school.
