WATCH: Bill Maher Gets PISSED When Neil deGrasse Tyson Points Out Maher Got Covid and He Didn’t

Comic and pundit Bill Maher was not a happy camper when celebrity astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson taunted him over the fact that Maher got Covid, but Tyson did not.

On Friday night’s edition of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, Tyson and CNN’s Michael Smerconish were Maher’s panel. Tyson decided to be the rare guest who pushes back on Maher’s Covid contrarianism, spending several minutes challenging Maher on the issue.

Maher is kind of an idiot re covid.

He’s one of those, “things aren’t that bad, why take precautions?” morons.

But the reason things aren’t that bad is BECAUSE a lot of us did take precautions.

by Anonymousreply 1October 15, 2022 8:41 PM

With this and having Benjamin Netanyahu as his first guest, he really does seem to be inching slowly out of the MAGA closet.

by Anonymousreply 2October 15, 2022 8:46 PM

Don't ever let that mother fucker on my show again. You know I hate it when guests have the nerve to disagree with ME!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 3October 15, 2022 8:49 PM

[quote]Bill Maher Gets PISSED When Neil deGrasse Tyson Points Out Maher Got Covid and He Didn’t

[quote]He’s one of those, “things aren’t that bad, why take precautions?” morons.

Doesn't his getting covid and not being hospitalized or nearly dying actually support this position?

I don't agree with it (my vaccine card his run out of spaces for boosters) and I still wear masks indoors in public places, but this doesn't seem like the "gotcha" that people are taking it to be.

by Anonymousreply 4October 15, 2022 8:51 PM

Plus his New Rules was yet another WOKE WOKE WOKE diatribe.

by Anonymousreply 5October 15, 2022 8:52 PM

[quote]the MAGA closet

We need a different name for that.

The MAGA Outhouse?

by Anonymousreply 6October 15, 2022 8:54 PM

It’s a bit of a hostile gesture to be fair - since getting COVID or not getting COVID in the post vaccine era doesn’t prove much of anything. I’ve never gotten it and I have friends who have gotten it 3 times - we’re all triple vaxxed. After a certain point, who knows why some get it and some don’t. So it was kind of a nyah nyah childish attack, tbh.

He should have stuck with his other point, namely that we don’t have A/B testing to compare the results - and Sweden is hardly analogous to the US. And I agree with Maher he needs to switch to decaf.

by Anonymousreply 7October 15, 2022 10:03 PM

R3 has it right....

by Anonymousreply 8October 16, 2022 12:22 AM

[quote]celebrity astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson taunted him over the fact that Maher got Covid, but Tyson did not

They're both fucking assholes.

There are a lot of people who are vaxxed and boosted but who work in jobs where they're around the public so much that they're going to get the virus despite all precautions. Those are lower class and blue collar folks who neither one of these fucking assholes care about one bit. They're also health workers who get exposed constantly. Tyson shouldn't be teasing anyone for getting the virus, and Maher should stop pushing the idea that it's no big deal and precautions take away his freedom.

by Anonymousreply 9October 16, 2022 12:26 AM

I agree, NDT went a little overboard with his temper, which I seriously believe was deliberate mannerism, not a natural outburst. Degrasse Tyson is clearly an extravert, but he is smart enough to curb his temper tantrums. So I'm sure his outbursts Friday night (or all his appearances) were deliberate performances to enhance his brand.

by Anonymousreply 10October 16, 2022 3:00 PM

Maher sounds more and more like a grumpy old man. He was always very open about positioning himself in the center, sometimes slightly left, sometimes slightly right/libertarian. So having another anti-woke segment is certainly in line with his views on things. I think what makes him lose his patience now is the increasing 'intolerism' on the left. The right used to have the self- righteous religious conservatives, and the left had the tolerant liberals. And he doesn't find the tolerant liberals anymore. In his opinion (and mine too) the left wing has become just as narrow minded and self-righteous as the right used to be. So he's frustrated because he lost his political home. I kinda feel the same way. Somebody needs to make the center a welcome place again.

by Anonymousreply 11October 16, 2022 3:01 PM

Isn't Bill Maher a stand-up comedian? Nothing he says has an impact on how I lead my life.

by Anonymousreply 12October 16, 2022 3:06 PM

If mandatory business and school closures, mask mandates, and vax mandates hadn’t happened, we’d be in a much bigger mess than we are now.

People forget that each covid infection is an opportunity for the virus to continue mutating. We have a duty to avoid getting infected.

Of course you have morons who can’t be bothered to mask because muh freedumbs.

by Anonymousreply 13October 16, 2022 3:09 PM

What's the storry with Michael Smerconish?

by Anonymousreply 14October 16, 2022 3:26 PM

Maher was consistently pissed during Covid because he was inconvenienced—ie, couldn't get laid.

He also gets enraged when he sees someone wearing a mask. What difference should it make to him?

And he played patty-cake with Chris Christie after always preaching that obesity is the greatest threat to public health, Why not confront Christie about it?

by Anonymousreply 15October 16, 2022 3:32 PM

Maher is constantly touring. Constantly. He was alone with his thoughts for the first time in forever during lockdown. And look what that wrought

by Anonymousreply 16October 16, 2022 3:52 PM

Netanyahu is not my favorite but he was totally right on most every thing he said. Gays have it better in Israel than they do in Arab countries. Arabs have it better in Israel than in Arab countries. Did you see the Palestinian president kissing up to Putin? He's pissed that Biden didn't give him the time of day. Since April 2021 the US has provided over $500 million to the Palestinians. Hopefully Biden is pissed enough to not give them any more money.

by Anonymousreply 17October 16, 2022 4:02 PM

It was so funny to see Tyson say that and Bill get pissed off that he got Covid 3 weeks after getting the vaccine.

by Anonymousreply 18October 16, 2022 4:04 PM

[quote] Since April 2021 the US has provided over $500 million to the Palestinians.

How much has it given to Israel in that same time? Just curious.

by Anonymousreply 19October 16, 2022 4:04 PM

I am not a drunk so I didn't understand this conversation or the intensity of the conversation.

I didn't understand why the audience was screaming with laughter either.

by Anonymousreply 20October 16, 2022 4:08 PM

Maher's views on vaccines have always been questionable, long before the pandemic.

He's never been a full-on Jenny McCarthy-style anti-vaxxer, but he's certainly flirted with that viewpoint.

His opinions on medical and health issues have always been pure shite, so none of this is new.

Also, he's a stand-up comedian, and many, many stand-up comedians, no matter how liberal, adopted the anti-mask, anti-precautions stance of the MAGA world, because their livelihood was threatened, and they couldn't go out on the road and work in front of audiences. Maher at least still had his TV show he could do, unlike most comics, but he wasn't happy about having to do it alone in his backyard, interviewing guests over Skype, with no audience to interact with. His show sucked during that period, and he knew it, so now he rails against the COVID "overreaction".

He also has always had this tendency to grab onto one topic and beat it into the ground. A couple of years ago, it was "Trump isn't going to leave office, even if he loses". Every week, every show, over and over, until everybody got sick of hearing about it. (Of course, as it turns out, he was more or less right on that one...)

This season, it's the "woke" stuff.

But at the same time, you gotta laugh at people who think Maher is MAGA. He still hates Trump with a passion.

by Anonymousreply 21October 16, 2022 4:15 PM

I’m watching this episode now and becoming INCREASIINGLY worried for the health of Neil Degrasse Tyson. I only see him in small bits usually, so watching him go off about war and science, stuttering his words that he manages to get out of the logjam that is his head makes me wonder if he’s cracked out like Whitney or having a stroke!

by Anonymousreply 22October 20, 2022 6:31 PM

Fat-fuck know-it-all getting something right beyond his disgusting ego and smarm vs. know-it-all nut job who has the moral compass of a broken pencil in the dirt.

American Dialogues before the Collapse.

by Anonymousreply 23October 20, 2022 6:36 PM

I hate how Maher distorts the truth to bolster his arguments. Reputable experts have never said they knew "everything." They provided the best advice based on what was known at the time and the advice has continued to evolve. He loves to make fun of dumb Americans, but on this issue, he's an arrogant, deceitful dumbfuck.

by Anonymousreply 24October 20, 2022 6:41 PM

Maher got addicted to the praise he got from conservatives for being a "brave" Democrat who went against party orthodoxy on a handful of subjects. He's still mostly a professional comedian and contrarian.

by Anonymousreply 25October 20, 2022 6:41 PM

Since the pandemic began, I can remember only when Maher had an actual expert on. I believe she was an epidemiologist from California. Among many things, she explained that a coronavirus is different from an influenza virus.

I guess Bill can't handle the truth.

by Anonymousreply 26October 20, 2022 6:45 PM

R26

remember only once

by Anonymousreply 27October 20, 2022 6:45 PM

Why hasn't this lecherous old git pothead been hit with a sexual harassment lawsuit yet? Think Bill and Howard Stern are limp dicks?

by Anonymousreply 28October 20, 2022 6:54 PM

"Gays have it better in Israel than they do in Arab countries." R17, there's more to Israel than just as a haven to gay people. Gays may have it better but Palestinians decidely do NOT.

As for Maher, I used to watch him regularly and agreed with him, but his rabid defense of everything Israel and his tedious COVID pronouncements make him increasingly more of a crank just to serve his brand than a trenchant critic of wokism. I hate the woke as well as the kind of crank he's becoming.

by Anonymousreply 29October 20, 2022 7:08 PM

Maher is an entertainer who goes on stand up tours. OF COURSE, he was pissed at COVID-19 related lockdown and safety procedures, which cockblocked him from making money by going on tour. I wouldn't call him a greedy fuck, but he was definitely pissed about losing money and other inconveniences, like pretty much everybody else in Hollywood and the rest of the world.

by Anonymousreply 30October 20, 2022 7:14 PM

R30

We all were pissed off. We all weren't lying about what the CDC, the WHO, and Dr. Fauci said. And by the way, we all weren't restricted to a beautiful LA home that HBO outfitted so we could continue doing our work.

Fuck Bill. I usually spend a lot of time defending him online. But as for his COVID stance, Bill can fuck all the way off.

by Anonymousreply 31October 20, 2022 7:30 PM

R9 is correct. Both men are hugely privileged assholes.

by Anonymousreply 32October 20, 2022 7:31 PM

The lockdown, the restrictions, the mask wearing and social distancing, all made a significant impact on curtailing the number of deaths at least until the vaccines were implemented to most people. Most of the science was correct, but there were some unknowns , such as will the vaccines keep one from getting infected or spreading the virus. Turns out the vaccines significantly mitigates the severity of COVID but it does not eliminate it. Without the steps taken or the vaccine the US will have at least 3-4 the times of deaths from COVID . The retroactive bullshit argument that the shut down of schools and business went too far is absurd.

by Anonymousreply 33October 20, 2022 8:50 PM

I have one friend who is so pissed that I haven’t gotten Covid and he’s gotten it at least four times. And, starting in June of 2020, I stopped following a lot of precautions and began going (quite regularly) to a warehouse bathhouse that re-opened that summer in D.C.

He says that same thing to me that “well, you probably got it and you didn’t know it!” that Bill said to NDT. Multiple Covid poz people love to say that to people who never officially got it.

by Anonymousreply 34October 20, 2022 9:58 PM

R34

Some jerk on Reddit told me I'd had COVID without realizing it. I would have noticed.

by Anonymousreply 35October 21, 2022 12:26 AM

R2, He's not Maga; he just has become unhinged as the batshit left has made us all question our progressiveness. Basically the batshit left which has been normalized and mainstreamed has made him crazy. He still be making some good points from time to time. Oh well.... they will WIN.

by Anonymousreply 36October 21, 2022 12:54 AM

Yeah, I've noticed his leftist or mainstream regulars are becoming increasingly annoyed with him as he turns more and more into an old right wing crank.

Pretty soon his panel will just be him, Ann Coulter, and hey, Milo, get ready for your comeback.

by Anonymousreply 37October 21, 2022 2:01 AM

Maher needs to die already. Sick of this boomer.

by Anonymousreply 38October 21, 2022 2:10 AM

He defends and praises Biden every damn week. Somehow this always gets conveniently ignored on here.

by Anonymousreply 39October 21, 2022 2:12 AM

Because the fringe left is mainly why Biden's unfavorables are so high.

by Anonymousreply 40October 21, 2022 2:13 AM

And you cannot disrespect the fringe left as a Democrat. You must be wholly empathetic at all times and all PC. I wish they'd smoke PCP and die in a grease fire.

by Anonymousreply 41October 21, 2022 2:14 AM

R40, are you saying those on this thread are part of the fringe left?

by Anonymousreply 42October 21, 2022 2:15 AM

R17, he's a Zionist prick who couldn't handle a CIA analyst years ago calling out Israel for what they are. Maher is fucking GUTLESS and uneducated, not "anti-woke" when it comes to a real discussion on anything involving the Middle East, that's why he brings on the type of Muslims who are the equivalent of a Candace Owens speaking for the black community. It seems the blind Israel defenders can't handle anything but an echo chamber when it comes to that welfare shithole. That he brings on a fucking crook like Netanyahu and treated him like some elder statesman, says it all about what a fucking hypocrite Maher is when it comes to Israel alone.

He's an absolute bitch and a coward to anyone who can see who he and his producers choose as guests. It doesn't say much for him when he brings on actual white supremacists, but isn't prepared to invite on people who would challenge his bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 43October 21, 2022 2:15 AM

R43, I agree that Maher is a disgusting apologist and defender of some of the worst elements of Israel, including that scumbag Netanyahu. Maher's absolutely shameless in his defense of Zionism.

by Anonymousreply 44October 21, 2022 2:18 AM

oh, dl is now a Neil deGrasse Tyson fan?

but are they masturbating to him or more to their hate of Maher?

probably the latter as anyone with a memory can recall when they hated NdGT for all the mean and triggering things he's said.

by Anonymousreply 49October 21, 2022 3:01 AM

I am endlessly perplexed by gay “liberals” who hate Israel and are all pro-Palestinian. You’re going to knock the only country in the Middle East that supports and respects gay rights, but you’ll get Muslim whack jobs who would sooner slit your throat than see you as human?

by Anonymousreply 53October 21, 2022 3:11 AM

by Anonymousreply 56October 21, 2022 3:28 AM

R47, I hate that these stupid ass crackas have hijacked the word woke. Both white liberals and these stupid ass Trumpy cunts. Ughh.

"Stay woke" -Donald Glover

by Anonymousreply 57October 21, 2022 3:29 AM

Woke is just a button one can push and people get all worked up over nothing significant.

Critical Race Theory, controversial books, student loan forgiveness, equality, #metoo, government programs helping the poor, disadvantaged, and the asylum seekers, universal health care, education, etc.

In the US, people get mad over their neighbors one day being able to afford medical care instead of potentially losing their home.

You know why we can't have nice things? Because we rather don't have them when it means others can't have them, too! That's how the GOP programmed its followers.

by Anonymousreply 58October 21, 2022 7:51 AM

R58 You’re definitely not wrong.

by Anonymousreply 59October 21, 2022 7:55 AM
