In addition to being the classic fake news story-- someone took a single Reddit post and turned it into a trend piece-- there's common sense: Gen Z's parents are all Gen X with some older Millennials and younger Boomers thrown in the mix no doubt too.

Regardless, they've been texting with their parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents from the time they got their first phone. All of those "older" people have used the thumbs up emoji with them for years and so they are well aware it is not hostile.
