Najimy had a much bigger role than Jennifer Lewis in the film. She was one of the main nuns. There's something she's not revealing.

Also sister act was her big break. I liked her as tippy in “its pat the movie” better.

I would assume the success of reboots like Hocus Pocus are why Sister Act is getting a reboot, too, yet they apparently didn't think to include Najimy, which is insane. Whoopi was being super weird about it, too.

I wonder if there going to find a young actress to co-lead with Whoopi. I remember seeing the sequel as an adult after having not seen it since childhood and thinking what a natural Lauryn Hill was. Sister Act is one of those films whose plot is so absurd but works because of the talents involved. That reason is why it shouldn't have sequels. No one but Whoopi could have made Sister Act the hit it was. But now she's pushing 70.

I saw The View when Whoopi said they were making a sequel. Kathy just looked at her oddly and said, "Oh, they are?" Whoopi responded by saying something like they're still working it out, but it seemed apparent that Kathy didn't know anything about a third sequel.

However, at the end of the interview, Whoopi did invite Kathy back to the table and 'hang with us in the future.' But that cloud of Kathy not knowing about the sequel kind of hung in the air.

The producers didn't even bother to present some super low ball salary figure for her to decline. She had multiple chances after at headlining, but she had a run of BO bombs in 95-96, starting with Theodore Rex in 95, she only did it because she was contractually obligated and was sued to be in the film. It was horrendous, her and a dinosaur solving crimes, the dinosaur was literally a reject costume from the TV show Dinosaurs. One of the worst movies ever made.

Then in 1996 she was the star of Eddie, Bogus and The Associate all of which bombed one after the other. Eddie was mediocre, Bogus was horrible, but The Associate might be her best comedy. The Associate is her in white male drag ala Mrs Doubtfire, costarring a campy gay’s fever dream supporting cast of Dianne Wiest, Bebe Neuwirth, Lainie Kazan, and Tim Daly at his peak hotness. The Associate was her last star role in a film, until the upcoming SA3. I think her career went down the shitter because of that horrible movie she made with Ted Danson, Made in America. MIA was a hit but was so unfunny, people went to see it because she was hot off SA, but then left disappointed.

In an interview for Hocus Pocus 3, a third Sister Act movie was mentioned, and Bette Midler asked Kathy if she could join. Saw a poster for the third (must've been a fake) that included Bette's name. Would be some devious double-dealing if Bette had been involved all this time and gave Kathy the old fake-out.

I may be in the minority, but I thought Sister Act I and II were great! The musical was "ok." I don't know what more they can do with the franchise if they stick with the same model. That story has been told.

Outside of cameos, I suspect Whoopi will be the only transitional character and that is just so they can maintain enough nostalgia to keep the franchise name.

This movie is just in the beginning stages - NO casting decisions have been made yet. They don't even have a working script, and Tyler Perry just came on board as producer only about a month ago. They have a very long way to go.

The only person who's guaranteed a role is Whoopi. The other actresses who have been mentioned (Patina Miller, Bette Midler, Jennifer Lewis) are all actresses Whoopi is saying she'd love to work with (her wish list) but nothing has been settled and no one has been cast. This can all fall apart by the end of the month.

Bette was originally offered the lead in the first Sister Act and turned it down.

Kathy was one of the best things about the original, total charisma.

I don't know how true that this. The first two worked not only because of Whoopi, but also because of the ensemble. Kathy, the late Mary Wickes, Wendy Makkena. And how can you forget the genius that is Maggie Smith? People loved those characters.

R93 The reason why people are questioning is because just a few days earlier, Whoopi went out of her way to ask Jennifer Lewis to appear in Sister Act 3. That being said, you are right that when a script is still in the development phase, they generally don't contact the actors. It's only when the project is given a green light that negotiations begin with the actors. This is why sometimes (particularly in sequels) a script is written with a character that is later written out when the actor proves to be unavailable or uninterested.

That being said, not asking Kathy Najimy or the red head nun (can't remember her name) would be a mistake. If you're trying to build on the nostalgia factor, you need to bring back as many of the surviving actors as possible. Let's also be real, Whoopi is no longer a bankable star My hunch, however, is that with Perry involved they are going to model it after Sister Act 2 more than the original and might be more of a reboot than sequel. E.g. Dolores wayward daughter has to hide in a convent with new nuns.

Leaving out Dame Maggie Smith and Kathy N is a huge mistake. It was the great ensemble that made it work. The premise made no sense in the sequel.

Remember the drama with Kim Catrall and the Sex & the City sequel? The producers thought her signing on would be a simple formality and, apparently, booked the rest of the cast for the filming schedule and she famously refused to join the movie sequel project which then fell apart (hence, And Just Like That). Usually main cast is locked down before anything else, like the actual filming schedule (and sometimes even a fully developed script), is created. Kathy Najimy would be considered a main cast member of the franchise since she appeared in the previous ones in the main cast.

I can see Dame Maggie Smith saying no, since the hassle of traveling would probably too much for her at her age and having battled cancer since SA and its sequel.

I just listened to Jinkx Monsoon's podcast interview with her.

A few impressions:

—She's lifelong friends with Whoopi. There is no bad blood.

—She seems VERY full of herself. I do think she is really talented but I was surprised how arrogant and self-superior she is. She talked over and over about how most people's performances don't impress her while boasting over and over about her talents as an actor, writer and producer. It was weird. I like seeing her onscreen but I would never want to have a conversation with her.

—She seems just *a little* psycho. She said when she was young she was obsessed with Bette Midler and she got dressed up like a singing telegram and got admitted to Midler's office and sang a telegram 'from Kathy.' Midler said, 'Who's Kathy?' and Najimi said she has no idea. Then another time she broke into the backstage area and was arrested and dragged away by cops and told Bette she loves her. Then she was cast in a movie with her and acted alongside her without telling her she is a crazy person who was arrested for breaking into the backstage area after one of her performances. And she said an old roommate thought she was crazy because she used to routinely write personal letters to celebrities and to New York Times editors.

The View doesn't just throw people together on camera. The producers and cast spend a day together planning out every talking point of every episode.

Najimy came out and promoted her movie, and then *Sunny* brought up Sister Act, the *producers* showed a clip of the movie with Najimy, and then *Sunny* mentioned Sister Act 3.

All of them already would have discussed the movie with Whoopi Goldberg. They already knew she is working on the movie because she invited Jenifer Lewis to be in it live on air on The View.

Whoopi would have said to the producers, "Hell no, nuh-uh, we're not gonna go there" if she had some problem with Najimy. They would not have had a clip prepared to show and they wouldn't have written the question on Sunny's card.

Whoopi is a producer. Whoopi told Kathy that the movie is happening and 'we're waiting on a script.' As a producer in pre-production, Whoopi would have this knowledge. As cast only, Kathy would not. That doesn't mean the info is being kept from her.

On IMDB, Whoopi is listed as cast. Keke Palmer is listed as cast. Jenifer Lewis is listed as cast. KATHY NAJIMY IS LISTED AS CAST.

R149 That's my take too that this new Sister Act will be mostly black and if any of the surviving original cast are asked back, it will be for cameos only. I'm not saying that's a bad thing at all, but I'll be honest the original Sister Act worked so well because of the supporting cast particularly the Maggie Smith vs Whoopi element of it, and Kathy Najimy was the breakout star of that film tbh. IMO, the second film didn't work as well because it relegated the original cast (minus Whoopi of course) to the background.

That being said, Sister Act 2 I think resonates more in the black community than the original movie and I think that's the model they'll probably go with in Sister Act 3.

Whoopi's a wonderful comic actress, but she was not the only reason for the success of the first "Sister Act." It had more to do with the fact that it had a great ensemble cast and a very witty screenplay (thank you, Paul Rudnick).

The sequel sucked because of the elimination of the plot device that made the first one work NO ONE, save for the Mother Superior, knew Dolores’ true identity. To ask her to pretend to be a nun again after her cover was blown took away from the plot line. I’m guessing that SA3 will have to do this also.

R153, well in that case no sequel could be possible unless Whoopi's character had to go into witness protection in an entirely new convent with new characters. But I will admit the tension/conflict in the first SA was not there in the second SA. They tried it with Whoopi's character trying to get through to those troubled teens, but it was not a compelling enough plot. The singing was good though (Lauryn Hill's voice was sweet).

Was this around the same time Pfeiffer's Dangerous Minds came out? Might explain the "similarities."

I don't think the movie will do as well since Whoopi is much less popular than she used to be. She is a very polarizing figure now.

Kathy's body language changes when Sister Act 3 is brought up. Very measured. Maybe she hasn't heard much or enough? There's salary negotiations on the horizon or something? It'd be dumb to make the movie without her. Whoopi and Kathy seemed friendly enough.

I miss 90s Whoopi. But after years of Hollywood Squares and The View, she's deflated. She'd NEED Kathy N and Maggie S involved in this to give it some dimension.

You’re right actually. She seems to have lost her spark. Maybe it’s because she went from headlining movies to just presenting that shitty tv show? She was in s2 of Star Trek Picard and she wasn’t very good; it was as though she’d forgotten how to play her character (although that was 30 years ago and s2 of Picard wasn’t very good in itself). She needs to find her mojo again.

Whoopi Goldberg has been in “I’ll take the checks” mode for ages now. She has given up. I run hot and cold with her.

Whoopi has admitted a few times over the year that basically she only agreed to do The View because her acting career was in the toilet. She has only remained on the show as long as she has because she has nothing else. My feeling is the reason she has been pushing the Sister Act 3 project for the past few years because she feels that it could get back into more successful acting projects.

Side note about SA 3, for years Whoopi has claimed that it was Disney that wasn't interested in doing a third movie but that's not entirely true. Back (maybe a few years after she joined The View) there was a talk of a third movie that would involve Dolores coming to the aid of an ill Reverend Mother (Maggie Smith) to once again save the convent. Whoopi turned it down and said in an interview there would never be a third movie because she had moved on and too many of the original choir nuns had died.

The only reason Whoopi did Sister Act 2 is because she got a huge pay cheque. She didn't care about the material.

Whoopi can be a huge bitch. I remember an interviewer asking her about her (then) young co-star Tina Majorino in Corrina, Corrina. The interviewer remarked at how good Tina's performance was, and Whoopi snarked back, "Yeah, well, that's her job". So rude and dismissive.

I beg to differ R168. The View is not Whoopi's only gig. If you look at her IMDB page, she has stayed booked and busy with acting and producing projects throughout her tenure on The View. Her film Till that's out right now is generating Oscar buzz. You may be right that she joined The View during a dry spell in her career, but I don't think she needs to continue on with the show to stay relevant. In fact, I wonder if The View might need her more now than she needs them.

Whoopi has been blunt about why she joined The View. She was canceled. No one would hire her. I don't remember what it was, but she said something that killed her acting career. She ways Barbara Walters did her a favor by offering her the job and that she was shocked Walters would risk hiring her, and she asked her if she really wanted to be associated with her. Babs told Whoopi she is a big star with a big audience, and Whoopi took the job because she had bills to pay.

She took it seriously but also felt it was beneath her. She wanted to quit when Rosie was hired and they locked horns. She wanted to quit after Rosie left.

Then, she claims, when the show became political and Trump ran for office, her family and friends all told her her job at The View is too high profile and influential to let go. She claims she was planning to quit but between the pressure from friends and family giving her some pride in the work and the producers letting her take Fridays off, she stuck it out.

Whoopi considers herself an artist, not a talk show host or a pseudo-journalist.
