Gutter Replacement?

Husband called gutter guy who have estimate of $20k. Said sorry, but we can’t swing that. Two story house, about 1800 Sq ft.

Guy comes back says he can get price down to $8-9k. That’s for 6” gutters, a few downspouts and about 10 ft of cracked fuschia to be replaced. No soffit replacement.

Does this sound right to you?

by Anonymousreply 32October 13, 2022 1:46 PM

(*fascia)

I had mine replaced last year. 800sf house, single story, three downspouts, 4" (I think) gutters, about 8' of rotten soffit replaced. Total cost: just under $1200, legit, bonded company, took just under a day to do it all, by the way.

$8000+ sounds a wee bit steep to me.

by Anonymousreply 1October 12, 2022 3:15 AM

Absurdly overpriced. I had my home reroofed for less than that and they threw in the new gutters

by Anonymousreply 2October 12, 2022 3:22 AM

"Husband called gutter guy who have estimate of $20k."

I hope that price included siding for the entire house.

by Anonymousreply 3October 12, 2022 3:23 AM

You need to get at least three estimates

by Anonymousreply 4October 12, 2022 3:23 AM

I agree with r4, OP.

by Anonymousreply 5October 12, 2022 3:25 AM

I have an 1100 square foot bungalow. In 2020, I got the gutters replaced for $800 - 6 inch gutters and downspouts. Admittedly, it was a basic job - just gutters down the each side of the house - and I missed the inflation of goods and services prices. And, I live in Bloomington-Normal area in central Illinois. Yet despite all that, your price still seems high.

by Anonymousreply 6October 12, 2022 3:39 AM

Wait him out. I just had gutters done and they came with an outrageous price. I didn’t respond. They came back with a 50% reduction, I still didn’t respond. After a week and a half we were down to about 20% of the original quote and I agreed.

I think the standard procedure with these guys is to bid high and hope the customer bites.

by Anonymousreply 7October 12, 2022 3:55 AM

Contractors are OUT of control in certain parts of the country. They have had 2 years of “name your price” market. Demand has way outstripped supply. The absurd estimates I’ve received for renovation work on my house are almost laughable.

It’s coming to a hard landing. I’ve had 4 contractors from whom I’ve received quotes in the last year come back and offer 20%+ off their price. It’s STILL insane.

Do the math - supplies are maybe $1,000. It will take them maybe 2-3 days to do the work. That’s $5,000+ a DAY! They have gotten away with highway robbery for 2 years now - screw them. Wait 6 months and offer them 50% less.

by Anonymousreply 8October 12, 2022 2:11 PM

Get your mind out of the gutter, OP!

by Anonymousreply 9October 12, 2022 5:45 PM

They're called eavestroughs where I've and I paid about $2000 for mine a few years ago.

by Anonymousreply 10October 12, 2022 5:51 PM

Until I read this thread, I never considered that gutters might have to be replaced on day

by Anonymousreply 11October 12, 2022 6:02 PM

I live in an area that has become very expensive. Even though it’s very expensive I think $8-9k is excessive for gutters & 4 downspouts. It’s not like it includes soffits, siding or fascia. I mean, will it even take more than one day? Maybe at this time of year because daylight is fading.

by Anonymousreply 12October 13, 2022 1:15 AM

[quote]about 10 ft of cracked fuschia

If you say this, he'll triple the price.

Related question: Do you all think that contractors, plumbers, mechanics, etc. try to take advantage of obviously gay men (like, you're both there when they show up or something) like they do women, homophobically assuming that you don't know anything about these "manly" things like cars and construction?

by Anonymousreply 13October 13, 2022 1:22 AM

Contractors are taking advantage of everyone except their friends and families now. They are getting $2,000+/day for work. They are making comfortable six figure salaries. It doesn’t make sense to me. I found the illegal immigrants to do the work for $300 day. The mainstream contractors have been robbing people blind for 2 years. The party is ending.

by Anonymousreply 14October 13, 2022 2:19 AM

I think all of these contractors automatically downgrade anyone who doesn’t understand these kinds of repairs. Like my neighbor in front of me is a landscaper, has trucks, he used to work with his father, who was a surveyor. I know this gutter contractor would treat my neighbor a lot differently than he treats me. He’d be like “Hey man, I’m a working class white guy, you’re a working class white guy. We’re not ‘elites.’ We’re not overeducated foofy types. Our wives cook our meals and raise our kids, right? We’re the breadwinners, man. We’re salt of the earth.”

They can tell when someone doesn’t know a soffit from a shark tooth and they look down on that person.

Which pisses me the fuck off. I spent years going to school when I could’ve gotten a job where I just have a cellphone, a truck and a few tools. I worked really hard to get the knowledge to work in heart surgery, but I didn’t look down on patients who couldn’t tell an LAD from a CFX. I can’t imagine scoffing at someone who doesn’t know what a normal ejection fraction is. But these working class guys are full of hubris. “We’re the normal ones. We make the world go around, right? Not like these elite fa.gs or snooty bitches.”

I hear them talking. My neighbor used to have people over in his backyard during Covid because they couldn’t go to the bar, as usual. I could hear them talking. They had nothing but disdain for their customers, unless their customers were working class guys who worked outdoors or fixing houses..

by Anonymousreply 15October 13, 2022 2:32 AM

My partner doesn't think my life is precious, he had me on a ladder replacing fascia boards and gutters in no time. And I'm afraid of heights, I get vertigo.

Your estimate is insanely high. You could get a roof replacement in many areas for that amount. If you don't want to diy, wait for the layoffs, contractors will be lining up.

by Anonymousreply 16October 13, 2022 2:41 AM

I agree it sounds like too much but it depends on your geography and whether you have options. In Los Angeles finding an honest, competent contractor is IMPOSSIBLE and if you do find a good one you will pay for it.

by Anonymousreply 17October 13, 2022 2:45 AM

So true, r15. They are openly contemptuous of the professional class. My house is falling apart because these assholes half-ass everything and I have gotten tired of dealing with them. Over the years, all of my interactions with contractors have been negative.

by Anonymousreply 18October 13, 2022 2:51 AM

No.OP. I just went through this. Similar size, Dutchess County: $2,500.

by Anonymousreply 19October 13, 2022 2:51 AM

Is your house in Monte Carlo?

by Anonymousreply 20October 13, 2022 2:58 AM

I am currently spending 6,500 for them to repair massive holes in my large roof, replacing rotted wood, putting mesh, fixing gutters too. Squirrel problems and some leaks, not sure if the price is good, but was getting desperate and the quote for a new roof was insane.

Agree completely about the contractors, every single one is an asshole who mostly half asses everything. They had so much business over the summer that they just blow you off for other jobs. Tide is turning now though. I had one that kept disappearing and I was literally pleading with him to come back to do more things he promised. He kept saying next week, never came and wasted my time. Today he called me. Too late for the asshole because I hired someone else.

by Anonymousreply 21October 13, 2022 3:00 AM

Depending on your age and health and free time, OP, you might be able to handle the job yourself. Both fascia boards and gutters are nailed in, no screws to remove. I replaced a roof myself, twice, with no construction background. It's simple. It's physical and you have to plan ahead, practice safety. I used heavy rope to secure myself which gave me confidence. I'm sure the neighbors had a good laugh, but luckily I had the last laugh.

by Anonymousreply 22October 13, 2022 3:02 AM

Glad this thread hasn't yet gone to the gutter.

by Anonymousreply 23October 13, 2022 3:04 AM

Actually don't think that's too bad, R21.

by Anonymousreply 24October 13, 2022 3:13 AM

I thought it was reasonable. Even got him to agree to install leaf guards with no additional labor costs.

by Anonymousreply 25October 13, 2022 3:41 AM

No. All siding people are rip off artists.

by Anonymousreply 26October 13, 2022 4:01 AM

The Hamptons, R20. The town I live in wasn’t part part of the Hamptons when I bought it. In fact when I said the name of the town people who lived only 25 miles away would ask “Is that upstate?”

To give an idea of what happened here - a house was built on my corner @ the year 2000. It probably sold for @250k. It sold last year for $1.7M, was immediately town down a and they are building what looks like a hotel on the entire property. They posted pics of the soon-to-come house the day after they bought the old house.

$8.7M

My house is in a middle class housing development. My house will never be $8M because I don’t have a view of farm fields. The house they’re building on the corner does. Three other houses were torn down. A4th has been cleared of all vegetation and is for sale. So I get to be surrounded by hotel sized mansions that will be Air BnB’d while I live in my little shack with water pouring off the roof.

by Anonymousreply 27October 13, 2022 1:27 PM

If you're of the hoi polloi, let the contractors know that somehow. You could try "Bottled Beer in the Kitchen" - they always fall or that.

OP, that guy is a crook. Tell him to fuck off. R1's price sounds right on the mark. Don't do business with any of these scumbags you see advertising on TV.

by Anonymousreply 29October 13, 2022 1:39 PM

Where are you located, OP? We had some gutters added to our roofline (DFW) and it was nowhere near that expensive.

by Anonymousreply 30October 13, 2022 1:40 PM

That's just like a friend who had a wreck last year. He, against my advise, took his car to the repair shop before he had received his insurance quote. The repair shop quoted him $2800.00. I told him that was outlandish. He got his insurance quote a few days later. He called the repair shop back and told them he'd gotten a quote from his insurance company for $785.00. The repair shop said "yeah, we'll do it for that".

Everybody is a crook these days. TRUST NO ONE, EVAH!!!

by Anonymousreply 31October 13, 2022 1:42 PM

Here's another example. 2 years ago I had to have a double study MRI done. I have very good health insurance. The lady at the MRI lab told me what my co-pay would be ($140.00), but if I wanted to pay in full that day I'd get a 20% discount off that, which of course I said yes to. I asked her, if I was paying out of pocket for this MRI how much would it have been. She did some calculations and came back with "it would be $11500.00".
