These 7 cereals do not qualify as 'healthy' according to the FDA’s new criteria
by Anonymous | reply 109 | October 14, 2022 11:50 PM |
9 grams of added sugar is totally unnecessary for Kellogg's Raisin Bran. They actually add more sugar to the raisins and to the cereal itself. Raisins are naturally sweet on their own. I'm glad the FDA who is very late to the party declaring how bad sugar and sodium is to kids (big and small).
by Anonymous | reply 1 | October 12, 2022 1:57 AM |
Raisin Bran (9g of added sugars)
Honey Nut Cheerios (12g of added sugars)
Corn Flakes (300mg of sodium; 4g of added sugars)
Honey Bunches of Oats, Honey Roasted (8g of added sugars)
Frosted Mini Wheats (12g of added sugars)
Life (8g of added sugars)
Special K (270mg of sodium; 4g of added sugars)

I often eat a bowl of Cinnamon Life for dessert.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | October 12, 2022 1:59 AM |
I remember eating Cookie Crisp cereal as a teen, which was basically cookies in milk. At the time I didn't care about health value, but looking back it's bad foods like cereals that set kids up to expect high sugar and salt content in their foods as adults.

I often eat a box of Cinnamon Life for dessert. I have no self control.

Cereal isn’t healthy, period.

People are obsessed with Special K and will tell you so.

R1, kids aren’t eating cereal anymore, nor do Americans give a crap about the FDA.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 12, 2022 2:05 AM |
There was a shortage of Special K cereal recently and people were running from one store to the next looking for the stuff

4 grams of sugar in one teaspoon. So for each serving of Honey Nut Cheerios, there are 3 teaspoons of sugar
by Anonymous | reply 13 | October 12, 2022 2:09 AM |
All these cereals are just processed food
by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 12, 2022 2:10 AM |
Shrikflation caused shortage of products. The manufacturers needed time to reconfigure the package of the product.

[quote]They actually add more sugar to the raisins and to the cereal itself. Raisins are naturally sweet on their own.
They get moldy real fast if they're not coated in a sugar-salt preservative, though. The cereal raisins (and other fruits like dates in other brands) last longer than a package of raisins or dates on their own, and it's because of the preservatives.
I'm not saying they don't add too much sugar, but the sniffy idea that they add sugar because of "baby tastes" or whatever is just factually incorrect.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 12, 2022 10:51 AM |
I tried some Kellogg's corn flakes recently and they had a weird, sweet aftertaste. Threw half of the box out, and I never throw out food. I miss Post Toasties!

So it's OK to eat Trix cereal?
by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 12, 2022 11:05 AM |
The point of the article is that those seven cereals are widely considered to be "healthy" but, in truth, are not.
It's not saying that any cereal not on the list, such as Sugar Frosted Rainbow Shit Chunks, are healthy because they're not included.
I'm saying this because I'm not entirely convinced that the handful of comments on here about shitty sugary cereals are jokes.

We were poor so mom would throw a handful of raisins into a bowl of Wheaties since we couldn’t afford Raisin Bran. The taste was NOT the same, you can definitely taste those sugar-coated raisins in RB.
The suggested serving size of Frosted Mini Wheats is hilarious— the average bowl that people consume is probably 3 or 4 “serving sizes.”

About a year ago I stopped eating breakfast cereal which I loved and started eating unsweetened oatmeal for breakfast and I stopped eating bread, rice, pasta and deli lunch meats all together although I will occasionally have a pizza. I increased fruits and vegetables, cut out all candy and sweets and I lost about 8 pounds and my blood sugar levels decreased only slightly. I've also increased my activity level. I was hoping to lose at least 20 pounds and while I am sticking with it, I am disappointed.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | October 12, 2022 12:09 PM |
I have always hated cereal. I would be hungry one hour after I ate a bowl of cereal so I was one of the first to be eating pizza and soup for breakfast in the 60's.

The food pyramid was propaganda to boost American agriculture. We spent a generation telling people that the foundation of a healthy diet was getting like a dozen daily servings of corn and cereal grains. Now most of the country is overweight and we’re positively agog to find out that our beloved breakfast cereals contain added sugar and sodium, when we shouldn’t be scarfing down bowls of wheat and corn in the first place.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | October 12, 2022 12:24 PM |
It is really hard to find cereal that doesn’t have sugar. Even the “healthy” organic ones usually have cane sugar or coconut sugar as an ingredient. I finally settled on this one because it doesn’t use any sugar…
by Anonymous | reply 38 | October 12, 2022 12:24 PM |
Let's be real, r37.
How many overweight Americans do you think *actually* followed the food pyramid?
by Anonymous | reply 39 | October 12, 2022 12:26 PM |
Frosted Flakes is not on the list, so I'm good.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | October 12, 2022 12:31 PM |
And guess what, getting rid of unhealthy cereal and only eating the tasteless "healthy" brands will not extend your lire one second. We're going to die when we're going to die. If you eat in moderation, you can eat most anything you love.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | October 12, 2022 12:41 PM |
I'm another one who doesn't get "filled up" after eating cereal. If I crave cereal, it's usually at night. It's the last thing I want to eat for breakfast. This article is another reason to just give it up entirely.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | October 12, 2022 1:03 PM |
First thing in the morning I need hot food. My daily breakfast is a fried egg & cheese sandwich on wheat toast and a hot cup of coffee. I'm hypoglycemic and that's the best thing to get my blood sugar up to normal to start my day. A bowl of cereal, even the healthy kind, would do little.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | October 12, 2022 1:07 PM |
Here, have a big bowl of carbs with some mucousy cow sweat on top!
by Anonymous | reply 44 | October 12, 2022 1:13 PM |
The biggest problem with cereal is the milk people drink it with. Cows milk is terrible for humans in the long run, especially it's casein protein. It's been linked to cancer and heart disease. There's a reason even cows stop drinking it after infancy.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | October 12, 2022 1:19 PM |
Why don't they tell us which cereals ARE considered healthy?
by Anonymous | reply 46 | October 12, 2022 1:27 PM |
Many "Fast" breakfast menus in most post industrial rich countries are not healthy. Cereal and pastries are industrial, most of the time. Americans should stick to fat and protein breakfasts such as bacon and eggs. Germany at least offers fast protein and fat sandwiches.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | October 12, 2022 1:28 PM |
Milk is loaded with sugar. “Natural” sugar, but still sugar. People forget about that. And skim milk may have less milk fat, but at least the fat in whole milk mitigates the release of insulin.
Steel cut oats are probably the healthiest cereal option there is.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | October 12, 2022 1:37 PM |
I haven’t had cereal since I started intermittent fasting years ago, foregoing breakfast.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | October 12, 2022 1:37 PM |
The reason why people are unhealthy is because they cut out all of the foods they enjoy and then binge on them at unhealthy levels. A normal sized bowl of Fruit Loops, every now and again, is not going to kill you.

Boring oatmeal with your favorite fruit.

Shredded Wheat n' Bran is my choice. Zero sugar, zero sodium, 8 grams of fiber and 7 grams of protein per serving. I eat it dry as a snack. Lots of carbs, but you can't eat the much, it's very filling.

I just ended a year long pre-diabetic nutrition program. Several of the recent posts echoed what they said. There are no bad foods. It is all about portions and balance. I was eating too much prepackaged processed foods, not enough vegetables and hardly any fruit. I still eat more prepackaged foods than I should. I stopped buying canned veggies and started buying frozen veggies. Added more fruit to my diet and I lost 18-20 lbs. Now I do to be more active.

Some people just can't do things in moderation, including me. It's all-or-nothing, with some things. I don't think it's a personal failure, it's just how some people are.

That’s why Frosted Mini Wheats put me in a coma (figuratively) every time I ate it. I stopped eating cereal ages ago, but I do miss Raisin Nut Bran and the raisins coated with crushed almonds. It’s much better than plain old Raisin Bran. I think it has even more sugar than Frosted Mini Wheats.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | October 12, 2022 6:20 PM |
I think the intention of this new FDA criteria is regarding cereals parent may think are in the healthy category, but they are not. One thing the FDA is still not focusing on is the additives and preservatives.

I stopped eating cereal because I'm an adult who knows how to cook. But back in the day when I ate it, I loved Blueberry Morning and Raisin Bran. Every so often, I get a craving for those but one look at the sugar content and I have to nope on out of the cereal aisle.

If you want good tasting cereal that is very natural and healthy, I recommend muesli. Perhaps the best is Seitenbacher, a German imported cereal you can find in health food stores but also in some supermarkets. The best option is their low sugar muesli that has net carbs of just 20 grams per serving.

I ate cereal and oj every morning for my entire childhood. OJ was a "healthy" drink, so I drank it like water every morning. Well I stopped when I went to college and I lost 20 lbs, but too late, a year later I had horrible IBD. Turns out OJ is so acidic it probably fucked up my whole digestive system and the sugary processed cereal did NOT help with reducing inflammation. Now I just skip breakfast and have a protein dense lunch.

Orange juice is basically sugary fructose drink. I you want some, have it only occasionally and only fresh squeezed where the nutrients and pulp are still living and vital. Never buy the processed pasteurized kind from carton or bottle, the nutrition is basically nil.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | October 13, 2022 2:24 AM |
I love Special K Red Berries, but I never buy them. I don't really like cereal for breakfast, and I can't drink milk, so when I buy oat milk or almond milk to use with the cereal, I have to eat it all before the milk goes bad, and then I might as well do rice Chex with chocolate almond milk, cos that is delicious, but very desert like.
I'm not a fan of sweet breakfasts.

Like many others, I grew up with some cereals in the morning. I'd often get eggs, bacon, and toast if my mother wasn't working. One breakfast I used to love was fried corn meal mush with syrup. We didn't get that often because my mother (Italian immigrant) associated polenta with being very poor. We were poor but not when it came to food. I remember really liking the way my mother made shredded wheat. Neither I nor my sister exactly remember how she did it. It was kind of a French toast. I think she soaked in an egg/milk combination until it was pretty soft and fried it in butter.
